Hi All.
I'm new to this and trying to install my first rom (aiming for cynagenmod 7- it has the language support i need, or so they say)
I rooted my phone and followed a yourtube video titled "How To Install CyanogenMod 7 Nightly on T-Mobile G2x after Nandroid Backup"
When i get to the part where i need to install zip from sd card, i can't find the file. I went back and copied the zip file into a few different folders, and although i can locate the folders, it tells me that the file cannot be found.
How do i get around this? Your help is much appreciated.

How did you download it? Through rom manager or from the phones xda app, browser? Look in folders with xda or rom manager?? Next time just copy and paste it to the root of the sdcard, not in a folder.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Downloaded it on a computer and then copied it to sd card
and you can't find where you put it? did you place it in a certain folder already created... you can plug your phone in to pc then enter recovery mode, go to storage and mounts at the bottom select mount usb then copy the zip to your sdcard in no folders.
When i try to do that t tells me unable to write to ums lunfile (no such file or directory).
From recovery mode there are some folders i can't see when i browse the folders on the computer when the phone is booted up normally - and vice versa. Is this an indicaiton of a problem?
Silly question: do you actually have an SD card inserted in your phone? If so, what did you use to format it?
i do have an sd, and i actually didn't format it. should i format? if so, what is the best way?
Your help is much appreciated

Did you try, while in recovery, taking the back off your phone, pop out the sd card, wait 1 second, then pop it back in?
Stupid question, but it's a mistake some beginners make, but did you unzip it by any chance? That could be a reason CWM isn't seeing it. Once you DL the ROM you need to leave it untouched. Then place on SD.
After that in CWM go to choose zip from sd.
And you attained CWM via NVFlash correct?

no, didn't unzip, left it as cm_p999_full-201.zip
and yes, did get the CWM via NVFlash
Maybe you accidentally copied it to internal memory instead of the sdcard. You can check in cwm under internal sdcard I believe is what it is called.
When you connect the phone through USB it mounts both internal and the sdcard.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
My file explorer sees it in both the root and the folder I created in the root - both can't be seen in recovery mode.
Should i list the directories i see in both views?
In cwm are you selecting install zip from sdcard or install update from sdcard

I ask it to install zip from sd and not update

you may have put it on the "internal sd card" instead of external sd card, however this is not an issue if you flash CWM 5.0.2.0 or later, it has an option to install zip from internal sd and external. i renamed my external sd card to avoid future confusion (otherwise i see two "removable disks" when i plug my phone into my computer)
Check your file names on your SD card. Check what you see listed in Recovery. If you see differing file names, then you're accessing the wrong memory.
I'm going to assume you tried booting with the physical buttons. Try booting with CWM which should give you a blue menu.
i did try to boot both ways and both times i did not find it... for the millionth time i took the sd card out and put it back in and rebooted using cwm, and funny enough, it found the direcotry... and yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, cynagenmod7 is my new rom
thanks for all your help, support and commiseration... really, much appreciated. i do ve a few more issues that i have to research now... again, external sd not found though... will probably solicit more help
again, thanks

Don't unzip the file. When you flash anything via clockwork, it flashes using .zip files.

Of course you didn't help because he didn't ask how to wipe. He asked how to swap internal memory and sdcard. I'm also looking for script or any-thing else that can do this.
I don't think you understood what I tried to say my freind.
By swap I meant replace extsdcard by sdcard so you can have more storage to install APS for example use a 32 gig micro SD as phone's SDcard partition.
It has to do something with vold.fstab file.
Like this tutorial
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1991583
And when I change it the phone won't boot and wiping partitions doesn't work cuz change was made by root access.
Does anyone have an idea how to restore original vold.fstab file without flashing ROM?cuz phone needs to be booted to restore it, but unfortunately it doesn't.

I you have backup of original file, download aroma filemanager http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646108 go to cwm and install it. It will open file manager in recovery where you can restore original vold.fstab.

Thank you
does it need root access?
For example Can I paste moded vold.fstab through this file manager on a nonrooted device then if it doesn't work try another one or just restore original vold.fstab and forget about it?
Cuz I do like mod my phone but I believe root is not an answer cuz I read somewhere it have some procceses before android boots which is not cool.

I think it should work without root, all you need is cwm recovery.
I would say it needs root access and it doesn't, how?
although you can make changes on a non-rooted device but ROM itself undoes your changes so it have no use for modifying system files like vold.fstab.

If you want internel memory mounted then use int2ext i.e placing the script after first boot up..
1. Download the script
from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716124
2.Download es file explorer as i use it.
Click on the option right side of home button.
3.Go to tools
You will see it as off.. click on it it will ask for root permission allow it. It will be on now.
4.Click on it again.
select Mount R/W
5.Set all to rw.
6.Extract the 40int2ext or something
7.go to device find system/etc/init.d.
8.Paste in the init.d folder.
9.After pasting select that file you pasted again click on option go to permission.
10. Tick on all the options you get.
11. Restart your device.

Hello, i am starting this post, since there were a number of post already made similar to this, but none could provide a valid solution.
U see i want some files and documents be transferred from my phone memory to memory card. My mobile is Samsung Galaxy Core 2 SM-G355H
I understand Samsung has disabled those feature after releasing Android 4.2.2 Kitkat and above i suppose.
But i read a lot about rooting and what is it.
The main question is how can i achieve to copy/paste files and documents from phone to SSD card.
I hope my question is simple, i could really use some expert opinion here.
Hello, i understand that samsung has restricted the access of SD card from Android 4.2 and above i guess again.
So is rooting a solution for that.
Please i need some suggestion. I have downloaded all the tools needed to root, all i need is some confirmation, i tried posting in there
blog, but they refuse to reply.
I want to know, is rooting device a one time process, if i need to factory recover, will the rooted device still stay in effect.
Do i need to re-root the device.
Give me some suggestion or give me a green light.

Rooting is a solution for this fix, but not always needed.
If u root your device you can use many apps to fix sdcard access ( root access needed ) like SDFix.
Well next thing ( without rooting ) is if u use stock or custom recovery, you can change or owerwritten platform.xml in /system/etc/permissions/ via update zip ( can made it 4 your version ) this is a way without beeing rooted.
the changed lines :
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
</permission>
Code:
<permission name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE">
<group gid="sdcard_r"/>
<group gid="sdcard_rw"/>
<group gid="media_rw"/>
</permission>
I can make the update zip for you to owerwritten the default values only for this file, so you will be able to access and copy files to/from SDCard without root.
It's up to you what will you do ...

I would like to try, as you suggested rooted is one way to go, and the method you described seems to be good to, please can u make the update zip file and attach it, and tell me how to update further, i will wait for your attachment and reply.
If your method works, why even go with rooting.
Thank you for your professional advice, awaiting reply.

I don't any other way.
Sorry, actually i hadn't copied your file to the SD Card, which i did later and ran the update.
However, i still cannot perform copy/delete option from the device.

Here is the site, do u think its the right way to do it.

The FS /system and other too is/are readonly (ro) in device, so if u want to delete or copy inside this partition u must change it to rw (readwrite), it's better for you to use some Explorer root based application like FX Explorer with root addon ...
If u have copied the update zip to extSdCard and run the update procedure in stock recovery U should be able to copy/edit/delete files on your extSdCard - Card if the install were sucessfull.
For a check: Install app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix and check again things now U'r rooted. Regards

The TWRP folder can only be accessed through a folder explorer app like RootExplorer or ES File Explorer as the folder is not on the devices "SD card" storage. To move a file there you will need to copy it to your phones SD Card space using your computer and then move it across to the TWRP folder using a file manager like the ones mentioned above.
Hope I could help and feel free to ask if you need any more advice on moving the files across
