[Q] how to upgrade 2.3.6 from 2.3.4 (rooted) - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have rooted my nexus s and flash the kernel.
Here are the phone details.
Android version: 2.3.4
Baseband version: I9020XXKD1
Kernel version: [email protected] #27
Build no.: GRJ22
I tried both manual and OTA update, but it failed. Is it due to my kernel version?
I want to update to 2.3.6 as the OTA notification is really annoying.
what should I do? thanks in advance.

I have the same problem, nether the OTA or the manual update via ClockWork works.

Flash the rooted version in cwm. Wipe only cache and dalvic cache. Done. If a radio was changed and you would like to use it flash it via fastboot.

Could you point to the rooted version please?
Ok I found the solution, the OTA update didn't work, and neither did the Update.zip
Grabbed the full Rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056062
And updated via CWM.
Working fine and running 2.3.6

Kernel Version: Netarchy 1.2.5 CFS
Radio Version: KB3
I got an system update message this to update to 2.3.4, firstly will this update work? Will it restore my phone to stock? What are my dangers but accepting and applying this update being that my phone is rooted?
You will be able to download it but you won't be able to flash it. For ota updates, you need to be completely stock.

[Q] Nexus S i9020a 4.0.4 IMM76D not working

After flashing the 4.0.4 ROM found on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569509 I have been receivng an error when using the OS. There are no errors in the actual update however when the OS starts up and I see the screen with the launcher I receive an error that com.android.phone has stopped working. Everytime I dismiss this error I just receive it again after a few seconds.
Below are the specs for the phone this update was performed on:
Model: Nexus S
Android version: 2.3.6 (I'm trying to update to 4.0.4)
Baseband: I9020A
Build Number: GRK39F
Carrier: Rogers
Country: Canada
Rooted: Yes
Bootloader: Unlocked
The phone also has ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0 installed.
P.S. I'd post this under the thread to which I posted a link to except since this is my first post I don't have access to the development forums.
Did you perform a wipe prior to flashing?
I cleared the cache and the dalvik cache but I didn't do a full factory reset.
Do the full wipe. Should fix any problems you had.
Thank you, it works.

[Q] 4.0.4 OTA: Failed to verify whole-file signature

Hi All,
Ive got a non-branded Nexus S, running on Official Stock 4.0.3.
I just got the OTA for 4.0.4 a few days ago but so far i have not been able to install it. My phone downloaded the OTA then I tried flashing the OTA update with stock recovery, but it says "failed to verify whole-file signature".
Tried installing the OTA update with CWM, but it gives me status 7 error.
When i hit restart and let it install on its own, it gets stuck on android guy. and after pressing vol up+power, it gives me the same error: "failed to verify whole-file signature".
I have stock recovery, stock official rom, locked bootloader and rooted.
Can someone please let me know how to install this?
any ideas?....

Try deleting the update and wait for OTA again, sounds like a bad download

Nexus S - Baseband
Hi,
I am having similar problems with my Nexus S. Here is the info:
Model:Nexus S I9020A
Android Version: 4.0.4
Baseband: NO DGSXXKI1
Kernel: 3.0.8-g6656123 [email protected] #1 Thu Feb 2 16:56:02 PST 2012
Build: IMM76D
Product name:HEARING
HW VERSION: REV 16
BOOTLOADER VERSION: I9020XXKL1
BASEBAND VERSION: I9020XXKI1
CARRIER INFO: ATT
SERIALNUMBER: 37335082822D00EC
LOCK STATE: UNLOCKED
Problem 1: The baseband on Settings is different from the one on the recovery menu and I think this is making me lose signal (which is my major problem), isn't the baseband supposed to be I9020AUCKJ1.
Problem 2: I tired installing the Incremental Update IMM76D from GRK39F to try to fix the baseband using the stock recovery (ie. Volume Up Power On, then Power Volume Up for blue menu and selecting recovery, then selecting the file named update.zip which I downloaded, renamed and placed in the root folder) I got the file from "randomphantasmagoria.com/firmware/nexus-s/i9020a/" and I get the e: signature verification failed error
Please help me, I'm new at this but I cant figure this out!
Thanks

You most likely modified the stock rom in some way. Like removing amazon mp3 store apk etc.
Since you're rooted you can download and flash a rooted stock rom. You could download the official factory images and manually flash them with fastboot. That would require you to unlock the bootloader though.

incremental updates only work when you have the right update for the right ROM. Since you are already on 4.0.4 you can't really the patch to"fix" things. I've not recently checked the status of the ota's but check to see if there is a full ROM version, you should be able to apply that. alternatively, you can apply a zip with the correct modern either through adb out cwn.

[Q] Can't install update from AT&T

Hi -
I'm trying to install the latest update from AT&T. I had previously tried rooting after going back to the default rom, and still have ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.6 installed. When I download the update and reboot the phone, I get taken to this bootloader instead of giving me the option to install the update. When the phone finishes rebooting, the following message is displayed: "The software could not be updated at this time" My brother said I have to flash, but I'm not sure I know exactly what he meant. (is that just for the bootloader?)
Thanks in advance
Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket (I727)

Yes you do need to flash.
how to Odin and stock firmware
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342348
And not to slam the OP but go to Sammobile to get the exact uckj2 Rom which is 100 percent stock
Read carefully and you'll be fine. I was new at flashes toi

Pretty sure you need to be on the stock 3e recovery and not Clockwork
Thanks!
So I need to use Odin to return my phone to stock to fix this?

Failed OTA upgrade from ICS 4.0.4 to Jellybean 4.1.1

I have a Nexus S that I bought new from Future Shop in Canada. I'm with Telus Mobility as my cellular service provider. When I bought the phone, it was running Gingerbread 2.3. I rooted the phone and flashed CyanogenMod 7 on it, but I had stability problems, so I flashed back to the official ICS image from the XDA forums. I've had no problems with the image, but just yesterday the Android 4.1.1 (Jellybean) System Update has shown up on my phone as being available for OTA update. When I clicked Restart & Install, the download ran fine, but when it restarted to do the install, it booted to the android and exclamation point. I had to do a battery pull to get it to boot, and then it just booted back to 4.0.4. I've tried the OTA updatemultiple times, but it still fails. Can anyone help me figure out why the OTA updateis not working?

I would do this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29073020&postcount=1
Just make sure you are choosing the right stock for your phone i1920A I assume. Factory Images "sojua" for Nexus S (850MHz version, i9020a)
This should clear it up. Then get the 1 MB update. Then do this to get 4.1.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29067584&postcount=2817
Thanks. That's exactly the information I was looking for. It turns out the problem was Clockwork Mod Recovery v5.0.2.0. It seems to have been causing problems with the OTA update.
