[Q] Can't flash radio after installing XE rom - HTC Sensation

I installed the Sensation XE HD ROM with no problem and it seem to work well. But I've been trying to install the recommended radio and can't get to first base. The instructions say to click "start Here" and I assume that is supposed to be after you have started HTC Sync. The problem is when I start HTC Sync there is no "Start Here" box to type in. The first HTC screen looks like this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=751753&stc=1&d=1318791953
The second screen looks like this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=751754&stc=1&d=1318791953
If I click on "Device setup" I can enter the "adb reboot bootloader" command:http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=751755&stc=1&d=1318792639
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but I've read these forums until I'm half blind, deleted and reinstalled HTC sync, and I deleted and reinstall the adb tools.
HTC sync recognizes my phone, and it shows up in windows device manager. So now I'm at my wits end. I'm a rank novice with the android phone so I'm sure I'm missing something and would really appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.
The second screen after entering the above command is a dead end

Hi,
Yes ,you do seem to be a bit confused.
When you plug in your phone into the USB,press charge mode.
Then click start here and it will open up a command prompt window.
Copy the commands, and right click on the top edge of the command prompt window, and you can edit ,then paste.
Follow on screen instructions carefully, and you should be fine.

Must have SDK installed to use adb. Or you can download the PGI5800 file, turn fast boot off in settings/power and then power down device. After which hold volume rocker down and power button. A prompt should pop up asking to accept PGxxx file and press volume up or down to accept. Once its done it will have flashed new radio.
Remove the file from sd card, or it will try to flash that every time and you won't make it into recovery.
Sorry about the vague file descriptions. Been awhile since I flashed radio but the steps are correct. Let Me know if this has helped. Thanks button
Make sure the radio downloaded. Downloads as PGI5800.zip Or something like that. Not a .tar file or something.

Sorry to be such a dummy, but when I plug the phone in to USB and press charge only there is no option to click "start Here".

I have sdk installed, adb is active, and the PG58img.zip is on the SD card. The instructions for installing the new radio say not to flash it using recovery.
As you can tell I'm very new at this Android business. I'm fairly good with computers, but this is new territory for me.

I just rooted my sensation last night. had it since the day it came out and am not new to rooting. rooted the first mytouch and nexus one.
the file you are looking for is within the zip file that contained the radio. you have to extract that zip radio file and then you will see the start here file. when you open it and your phone is connected a window will open up then follow the rest of the directions to input the information.
You don't need htc sync in order to update the radio.

Where should the file be extracted to? The phone or the computer?

Hi,
Use winrar or 7zip to extract the zip to your pc/ laptop desktop.
You will then see a read me text.
Read it.
Plug in your USB , press charge, then start here on your desktop.
Follow the onscreen instructions.

OK, thanks I finally got it to work. I appreciate the help.

OM freaking Lord, you have NO idea how much you just helped me!!! Your short, clear instructions saved lamer noob me from 2 days in a mud hut by the river Styxx.
I had almost given up on ever flashing the radio, I flashed wiped & s-off everything with ease to get Mikes great Revolution ROM, but this last tiny step became a real torment. hope the radio improve my simple mobile(T-mobile bases) hspda, its never been fast enough for streaming video, but at least I got the radio flashed!

instead of going through that 10 step process could have downloaded the radio extract the the radio.img
and boot into fastboot then use the
fastboot flash radio
and done! lol but everyone to there own

How To Turn S-Off, Install MoDaCo Clockworkmod Recovery, and Install a Rom For Dummie

OK, I've read a lot of comments about people having trouble installing MoDaCo clockworkmod, or even turning their devices S-off. But my guide is going to go step though step of how to turn your device into a lean, mean killing machine. It took me days to accomplish this when i first got my device, hopefully this will take you under 30 minutes! I'm a junior member, i know, so cut me some slack, PLEASE.
WARNING AND DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RESPONIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOUR PHONE. FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK, EVEN IF IT FALLS APART IN YOUR HAND, OR BECOMES GODLY FAST!
1. The first thing we need to do is turn S-OFF for your mytouch 4g slide. It is probably the easiest thing to do, other then installing a rom on your device.
a. You will need to download the usb drivers for your phone, DON'T SKIP THIS STEP, or you'll wonder why your phone isn't discovered by the software. You can find those drivers at this website right here:
http://www.htc.com/managed-assets/support/software/htc-sync/setup_3.0.5579.exe
After you have that software installed, plug in your phone, and give it a couple minutes to install all the correct drivers for your device, then make sure you go to the bottom right of the computer and exit out of that software, it can't be running when your trying to S-OFF your device. Now I dont think you have to have the fastboot drivers installed either, but why not, lets go ahead and download those files and get those installed too.
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
After you have those installed, its now time to move on.
b. Now thanks to unrevoked and AlphaRev and their team, you will go to their site at http://revolutionary.io/ and you will scroll down and click on Download for Windows (If you can take everything I'm saying and do the linux version, right on!) at that moment a download box will appear, but do not download those files, download the files from this website http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BP2E3ZQ3 .But you will need to enter some information in the box below after you click on windows download, just remember, you don't need those files. Your operating system, device, HBOOT version, and serial number. Your HBOOT version can be found by taking your device, going to apps, settings, power, and uncheck fast boot, then power it off, i always power it off and then pull the battery out, makes me feel safer...and soon as its off, holding the volume down button, camera button, and power button all at the same time. You'll then see a screen with the android bots on the bottom are rolling on skateboards. At the top should be your HBOOT version, and there is only one option on the site, so hopefully your in luck! For your serial number, take the battery out from this screen, don't push any buttons, and on the sticker under the battery, your serial number will be there starting with HT--- or power your device back on, then go to apps, settings, about phone, phone identity, and wala, your device serial number. After you enter all that information into the site, it will generate you a beta key, YOU NEED THAT IN ORDER TO S-OFF AND ROOT YOUR DEVICE!! So write it down somewhere, copy and paste in word, do what you do
c. Now we have everything downloaded, we have our beta key, its time to get to work!
d. The file you downloaded from megaupload, "MT4GS-ADB-WINDOWS" you need to extract that file into a folder on your desktop. Make sure you open the folder mt4gs-adb, and extract the files out of the folder, so you should have 12 items in your folder on the desktop, not just a folder in a folder! I created a folder called "root mt4gs". You want all the files in one location. After there all extracted, open your folder on the desktop. On your phone, go to apps, settings, applications, development, and click on usb debugging and make sure the check mark is blue on the right. Now plug your phone into the computer.
Now in your "root mt4gs" folder, double click on revolutionary. At that moment it should ask you for that beta key i told you to save. Go ahead and enter that now (its case sensitive). Let the software run for a couple minutes....
Now after it says S-Off, your halfway there!! Your HBOOT will now say 1.44.1107. That way you know its done! It will ask you to install clockwork recovery mod, say NOOOO, it has hella problems. It gave me problems when i said yes the first time, i'll show you another way.
e. At this moment, we're going to install clockwork recovery v4.0.0.9, thanks to Paul O'Brien/MoDaCo, the gods lol. First, turn your device off/pull the battery out, thats what i do. Then hold volume down button, camera button, and power button at the same time. It should show you the skateboarding androids, and at the top it should say -Revolutionary- in purple. If it doesn't, don't continue, retry all steps or message me. Then plug your phone into the computer, and using the power button as the selection button, push the power button as your highlighted over FASTBOOT. It should say FASTBOOT USB at the top in red now.
Now believe it or not you already have the file you need in your "root mt4gs" folder. Your now going highlight all the files in your "root mt4gs" folder to the root of your hard drive. Click on My computer, double click on your c: drive, and paste those files right on there, do not copy the folder, or put these files in a folder!! Now your going open a command prompt. {Hold the windows key and tap r}. Then type "cmd" without the parenthesis and it should open up a black box.
Now type cd\
Your command prompt should now just say c:\> thats what you want it to say
Now your going to type adb.exe
You should see a whole bunch of words flash on the command prompt, the last couple words should say "bug tags are printed." That means your right on track.
From here, you are going to type in fastboot devices
it should have the serial number of your device and the word fastboot right next to it!
Now, here comes the tricky part that i got stuck at, but i know you can do it! Now this will work if you put the files exactly where i told you to put them. you now will type fastboot flash recovery c:\clockworkmod.4.0.0.9.img
it should say " sending 'recovery'
okay
writing recovery'
okay
finished. total time: (mine is 10.400s)
Now to make sure it's intalled, on your phone, click power button and you should now see fastboot, recovery, factory reset, simlock, and imagecrc as options, use your volume button to go down to recovery, and click power button.
You should now see clockworkmod recovery 4.0.0.9.
f. Now lets put superuser on your device so you can be free!
click on this file and download it, DO NOT EXTRACT IT
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip
Now after you have downoaded that file, on your phone, use your trackpad, and scroll down to "mounts and storage"
then scroll down to mount usb storage. now you should be able to put files on your sd card, make sure you put it on the root of your sd card, not in a folder, it doesn't matter, but i prefer it!.
Now unmount on your phone by clicking the option, click go back, and then scroll down to "install zip from sdcard" and click on it, then click "choose zip from sdcard". Find that file we just put on there "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip", and click on it, then click yes. Now click on go back, and click reboot system now!
Now if you want to stay stock, your done, your rooted, so now just install root checker, and busybox, and your good to go, if you want to do some roms, keep on reading.
Now you cross your fingers, and grab a soda, because we're 75% done!
g. Now is the easy part, all you do now is download the roms from other developers, copy them to your sdcard, then turn off the phone, hold volume down, camera and power button, go into recovery with using vol up and down buttons as the selector, and the power button to confirm your option. As you enter clockwork mod, you can then go follow the directions of the developer as to wipe certain sections, and how to install there roms/patches. YOUR DONE
If you have any questions, please let me know, also I didn't make ANY of this software, this guide just has every link to get you everything you need at one spot. I also have the original file to make your phone completely stock, so if you need that, let me know and I'll upload that and send the link out.

Ok let's figure this out.. on step f, you did unmount your sd card, right? I haven't dealt with this problem before so if I ask a stupid question, I'm just trying to solve this. Also you don't need to wipe anything to install superuser, so that could be the problem also, so reboot ur fone, and let's try step f again! Keep me updated please!

It took a lot of us several attempts to flash the superuser zip. The 4.0.0.8 recovery isn't the greatest. Keep trying until it installs and you get root. Then upgrade to the modaco 4.0.0.9 recovery right away. It's not perfect either but it fixes a LOT of the issues known with 4.0.0.8.
And a comment to the OP, this is an incredibly helpful walkthrough! If only people would actually search and find this before posting new threads like "how do i root" and all that crap.
Thank you.
Great job on this and thanks for your work. I wish I would have had this tutorial when I did mine.

OK ill reexplain is there an icon in the apps drawer for CWM to select to reboot etc. because it didnt install one on the MT4Gslide as on my MT4G.
I know something is goofy as SU wouldnt flash, I had to install the new version from the market.

Oh, now i understand. No there isn't. I don't have one at all, as soon as I installed clockworkrecovery, and superuser, I flashed undeads rom on there. And I've been reading that superuser is being buggy when installing it on this phone through cwm...I'll look into that tonight, see if i can find the root cause.

You probably just have to download ROM Manager from the market, I think that's what you're referring to. There isn't a whole lot of support for our device in ROM manager right now, however, and I haven't checked to see if the "reboot into recovery" works. Go into settings > power > and uncheck fastboot. Then, shut down your phone, wait 10 seconds, hold down the volume down button and turn your phone back on. That'll get you into recovery. Did you get superuser to install? Are you rooted?
Mine won't switch from "revolutionary" in purple at the top to "fastboot" at the top.
It says fastboot USB about 6 lines down, but that's it.
When I type "fastboot devices" it errors and says:
'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
anyone know what's up?

You must rename the downloaded file exactly "PD98IMG.zip". Once you do that, place on the root of your SD card (i.e. put it on the sd card). Once there, boot into bootloader and it should find the file and flash the radio. I cannot stress enough 2 things. You MUST name the file exactly "PD98IMG.zip" or it will not recognize the file. Also, if you have hide extension preference on, you may not need to add the .zip part to the end of the file. If you do add the .zip and it doesn't recognize in hboot, and you have named it exactly "PD98IMG.zip" then delete the .zip part and try again. Secondly, check the md5 number to be sure you didn't download a corrupt file. More times then not its fine but I cannot stress enough that only bad things can happen if you flash a corrupt radio. Lastly, search search search! there are numerous threads, especially in the dev section (1st thread) that details how to flash radios. Below I've added the link, while the radio that you're about to flash is on the DHD forum, the method to flash is still the same in the provided link below. If this has helped you, know where the thanks button is
FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS!
Edit: Uhm, not sure what you mean by does this do radio off? If you ran the hack kit and you have successfully installed Bindroid, you should be rooted with S-Off, enabling you to flash the radio with the above mentioned method..in bootloader it should say S-off, again though if you have flashed bindroid, you are rooted successfully I would think..
I did what you told me and its not working for some reason. What could this be? Says something like Wrong Image.
Tried flashing Radio with the toolkit too, it goes through the process but radio is the same.... So frustrating.
Stop. You can't just take any file and rename it to PD98IMG and it will magically work. There needs to be a script included to actually run it correctly. Now if you hold on for a while, I made a PD98IMG file for this radio a while ago for someone else. Let me look for it and I will post back.
The hack kit gives you S-OFF. That's all you need to flash a radio PD99IMG file. Also, please post if you have the Inspire or the DHD. Just curious.
thanks, I will wait. What I did was put the file in root, do a restart into bootloader, select hboot then started running saying wrong P98IMG.zip. Tried 3 different methods and no go. I have an inspire 4g from ATT and has the gingerbread stock radio on it. I want a new radio due to horrible battery life. I noticed that it gives me 3.9v instead of 4.2, is this a problem?
Before I post the file, please make sure you delete any other PD98IMG zip files that are on your sd card.
Yeah I know, also what method should I use with your file?
It seems it was the RADIO i was looking the problem. I put in this one,
Radio w/RCDATA: 12.59.60.26P_26.11.04.21_M
MD5 Sum: 57cccef401c372c6d421c986ee42e0fe and flashing worked perfectly. Guess Ill try this one for a while.
Boot into Hboot. You can do this by these methods. First go into your menu settings and it is usually under Power. Make sure the option for Fasboot is unchecked. After this power phone off. After phone is powered off, hold down the volume down key and keep pressing it. While still pressing volume down key press power buttonfor a second or two. You can let go of the volume button as soon as the white Hboot screen shows up. The phone will scan for files and find the PD98IMG file. It will then ask you if you want to update. Press the correct volume key to accept. DO NOT POWER OFF THE PHONE DURING THE UPDATE. It should take less than a minute. Once it is done, press power to reboot. After phone is running, make sure you delete PD98IMG file off of sd card. It will save you a headache if you ever need to go back into Hboot. Link is posted. Before you transfer to sd card, rename the file to exactly "PD98IMG", without the quotes. Just delete the underscore and the ending I added.

If you flash a radio file then make sure you flash the matching RIL file in recovery, not Hboot. In recovery options, go to mounts, mount system, then go back and select the RIL zip file to flash.
thanks alot, will try with the one you posted now. I was able to flash with another radio so it was that one specifically that was bad or w.e.
If you are going to use the ATT 421 radio you just posted, then flash the RIL file in recovery like I described. Flash the matching RIL file in recovery, not Hboot. In recovery options, go to mounts, mount system, then go back and select the RIL zip file to flash. I am posting the RIL for the radio you just listed and for the one I posted, which will end in 4.19.
I am also including a program created by ZikyHD. Install it on your phone. It is an easy way to check and see what radio and RIL you have installed.
ahhh! my apologies!! I thought he pulled the radio file from the same page I did (not the case) holy crap what a bonehead move by me! Wolf good man! I'm using BinDroid too and flashed the recommended radio recently and pulled the file from a different page...glad Wolf got you straightened out..I should have just posted the PD98IMG I had, glad wolf is on his game better then I am. Assumptions are really killing me lately!
It happens, but be careful when messing around with radio files because you can brick your phone if it messes up. To the OP, make sure you check the previous post made by me for additional information and downloads. Also let us know how it worked out. Test any new radio for at least a few days to a week. It needs to settle down. Remember, what works well for some people in their area may not work well for you, and vice versa.

I always take extreme caution when dealing with radios...and I cannot stress enough how important it is to delete the radio off the SD card..what nightmare that can become if you softbrick or something...not that I learned that the hard way or anything
I tried installing that app to check the RIL, doesn't phone says its not recognized.

well at the risk of making myself an ass again, I use terminal commands to check my ril..as far as I know it does work. If you want to take this route, download your favorite terminal app (I use terminal emulator). Open a command windown and type "su" and hit enter. First time it should prompt you to allow superuser permission. Allow it. then type: getprop "gsm.version.ril-impl" and hit enter. It will display the RIL file and hopefully the one you're expecting!
What phone do you have? That should work with most phones. It an Android program. If you are having trouble installing it then try a program like Easy Installer from the market. You can also run terminal commands on your phone or your computer to check the radio/RIL information.
In phone terminal, type the following after typing su and hitting enter:
getprop "gsm.version.ril-imp"
In command prompt, ADB, type the following after adb shell:
getprop "gsm.version.ril-impl"
Edit: Looks like I did not pay attention and refresh the screen. MMM answered the question. To the OP, what phone do you have and I am assuming the radio flash worked.
Thanks alot bro, with your file it was the only way I could this radio to install, tried alot of other methods and it would't work. Thanks alot again.

[GUIDE][GB upgrade][softbrick recovery]The "one click" method

Introduction: It has come to my attention that many of us windows users are still using odin for upgrading to Ginger bread and recovering from soft bricks. I have found the heimdall one click method is easier to use and more stable for flashing your phone from a computer. I am trying to make this guide as noob proof and simple as possible. Given how simple the one click method is it should not be hard (although if you are new to this device it can prove to be difficult if you don't read and understand everything).
Please be sure to format your sd card if this is the first time you are flashing ginger bread. If you have problems converting to ext4 using one of the rooted one clicks it is suggested you create a 2048 partition in cwm.
The first five steps are to help get heimdall and everything needed to use it installed on your windows computer. If you already have heimdall you can skip to steps 6&7.
Please read everything in this guide before proceeding and be sure to read everything else mentioned in this guide. proceed slowly if this is your first time. I recommend a print out, double check everything, and cross off each step as you go. Slow and methodical = smooth = fast and efficient with perfect results. Remember the best way to gain knowledge and learn to do almost anything is to READ.
If you have used the one click method and have any suggestions for this guide please feel free to comment.
Disclaimer: You are flashing your device at your own risk. No one but you can be held responsible if you make a mistake. Some one click packages contain bootloaders and flashing incorrect bootloaders may hard brick your device. Never flash a one click package that is not clearly labeled for your device by model number.
Warning: if you are on a Mac running osx 10.5 or higher there is a problem with the re partition function in heimdall. since you must flash boot loaders these packaged are designed to re partition automatically. It is recommend you use a windows or Linux parallel to flash.
On to the guide:
1: first you will need to download and unzip the lastest heimdall front end. This package can be found at http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
Please read and understand everything that this website has to offer about the program before use.
2: after you have unziped the heimdall front end package open the containing folder and click on the "Read Me" text file. This file contains troubleshooting tips, driver installation, installation procedures, and instructions for flashing other heimdall supported files to your device. Oh yeah and they don't call it Read Me for nothing
3: you will also need to download and install the package labeled "Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 redistributables" and get java 1.6 do I have Java?. Simply download and run (double click) the executable files.
4: Once you have downloaded and unziped heimdall front end, installed java 1.6, and installed the C++ packages you will need to install your device drivers (this process is also explained in the read me file you should have read).
A: Place your device into download mode and plug it into your computer. How to get into download mode
B: Open the unziped heimdall folder then open the the "drivers" folder and run (double click) the "zadig" application
C: Click the "options" menu and make sure "list all devices" is checked.
D: from the drop down menu choose "Samsung USB composite device"
E: Click the "install drivers" button and let it do its thing.
Note: if you have trouble installing drivers try again. If "Samsung USB composite device" is not an option unplug your device re run zadig and take note of what options have disappeared.
5: Now it is time for you to choose your one click package. If you would like help choosing the package that is right for you please feel free to ask.The threads I am linking to are only for the Samsung Galaxy S 4G device from T-Mobile, Model# SGH-T959V. If this is not your device do not flash the one click packages I am linking to. If this is your device these are the ONLY one click packages available. Again, never flash a firmware package not clearly labeled with the exact same model number as the device you are flashing to.
Choose and download the one click package of your choice. Remember to read the OP of each thread before making your decision. If you have a question feel free to ask here.
A: kj6 one click collection
This thread contains three one click packages to choose from. All are from the official Galaxy S 4G Ginger Bread Upgrade to 2.3.6 or KJ6. Read the OP to choose the one that is right for you.
B: kf1 one click package
This was the first one click package we obtained for the Samsung Galaxy S 4G. It was from a leaked version of gingerbread 2.3.3 or KF1. I, and Most, do not recommend you use it because the boot loaders change the button mapping for recovery and download modes (this can cause problems trying to revert) ;but, I would like to give credit to the creator of the one click packager and will include his thread and work as such.
6: Now that you have installed heimdall and chosen a one click package its time to flash. Close your heimdall folders and forget about them for now. put your device in download mode and connect it to your computer How to get into download mode
A: Run (double click) your "oneclick.jar" package. Yes, they are supposed to be executable files (be patient it may take a minute to load)
B: Read the "package information" section and ensure you are flashing a one click package designed specifically for your device by model number.
C: do nothing else except click "flash"
D: wait for device to reboot
E: If you are upgrading to GB from froyo do not close your "oneclick.jar". You will need to repeat step 6 a second time with the "flash bootloaders" box checked. Please also ensure you have read the disclaimer.
7: At this point your device will be in one of these three states
A: rebooted and running as factory
B: in the stock Samsung 3E blue recovery in which case you should use the volume buttons to navigate to reboot device and use the power button to select reboot device
C: In a CWM recovery where you should use the volume buttons to navigate to reboot device and use the power button to select reboot device.
That's It! Happy flashing!

odin vs. heimdall comparison
Most of us here are used to Odin and can make it work; however, it is an unstable, proprietary, windows only, unsupported program. It often will not recognize your device or you get a better experience with v 1.7 or v 1.85 or maybe it is just picky with your computer or device. I had both the above mentioned versions installed on my desktop in case I had problems with one or the other. This, to me, is totally unacceptable. Now we have heimdall and I encourage you to make the switch. It is an ongoing project that is cross platform, supported, and open source. This means it is based on the same fundamentals as Android proving any developer the opportunity to help make it better, faster, or more user friendly. Take the one click project for example: now, with heimdall installed on your system, you can simply execute a pre programmed flash and your done with your device flashed as the developer intended. I admit it is a few clicks not just one but, it hasn't given me any problems, it tells me exactly what it's doing in a language I understand, and it is super easy. So at least give it a shot, bet you will like it

Choosing the right driver
Hi there,
I don't see the Samsung USB Composite Device in the drop down box when running Zadig. What I have is below:
Samsung_Android
CDC Abstract Control Model (ACM)
Android UMS
S3C6410 Android ADB
Driver failed to install for Samsung_Android. Should I try any of the other options?
Thanks for helping a bricked noob out!

Was your phone in download mode?
Unplug your device and re run zadig. Take note if any options disappear. If so re plug your device and try it. If not report back.

its honestly the far superior option and comeing from a linux based world where i dindt have to deal with odin as much Its great tried odin on windows and really its far superior and alot more stable then odin.. its worth learning tbh
Further adventures in un-bricking with Heimdall
Thanks for your quick replies!
1). I was able to get the driver installed, using the Samsung_Android. When I connect the phone it now shows up in the device manager. Picture 1 attached (libusb - Samsung Android).
2). I'm not sure what mode my phone is in. When I press the power button I get first the startup screen....Picture 2.
Then I get this screen "Android System Recovery 3e" and a range of options. The volume control is flipped i.e pressing down causes the menu to go up. (Picture 3)
There is no way to "select" any of the options. Only one of the buttons at the base of the screen seems to work: the menu button causes the text on the screen to disappear and only leaves the green android with triangle exclamation point. (Picture 4)
Heimdall does not detect that the phone is connected....Picture 5.
Any suggestions what I should try next? This is a Galaxy S 4G t959V.
Thanks so much for all your help! What an introduction to the world of Android!

You are currently in recovery mode running whatever bad boot loaders you flashed. Use this method to enter download mode
1 pull out battery
2 hold Vol up Vol down at the same time
3 plug USB cable into phone and computer
4 re insert battery and continue to hold both Vol buttons until your phone displays something.
unfortunately it is possible the bad boot loaders you flashed may have messed up your button mapping. if you try the above mentioned method for download mode multiple times and only end up back in the same recovery screen please direct me to the thread you flashed the bad boot loaders from
Good luck

Yup, anyone can update the wiki I'm going to add guides little by little into it so we can just link new users to it. I realized after typing for the 20th time how to get into download mode that it'd be easier to just use the wiki.

Is it fine if we use your picture in the wiki? People would really appreciate it.
Now that you're in download mode you can use the one click to recover your phone.
Please feel free to use any or all of the pictures!
My utmost thanks to you guys! The "experts" at tmobile basically told me that i had a paperweight and would need a new phone!

The file I'm using is from this thread:

I did leave the phone connected to USB and it was showing the downloading screen for the 2 hours while I was away...
What now?

My experience rooting the HTC Thunderbolt (And succeeding!)

**NOTE** Make sure to goto setting>applications>development and turn on debug mode and stay awake!
Hello everyone!
This morning I spent a great deal of time trying to root my Thunderbolt looking across many different forums so I decided to post my path to success here to help anyone else out that was in my situation
So the first problem I ran into was I was on the newer .9 firmware. Multiple people told me either 1. You CANT root or 2. You have to downgrade and lose all of your stuff. Heck no was I doing that!
So I was searching through the depths of cyberspace and I came across this:
thunderboltforums[.]com/forum/htc-thunderbolt-development/7743-tool-bypass-downgrade-get-s-off-no-data-wipe.html (It wont let me post a real link
Which is a tool to root without downgrading! I thought "Wow! This is perfect, 5 minutes and I'll be done!" Wrong.
I had much trial and error but I finally got it working so here is what I did.
I extracted the entire DowngradeBypass.zip into its own folder.
Then I ran the RUN-ME.bat and it asked me "If I had the fastboot drivers installed?" I miss read it as "Do you want the fastboot drivers installed?" And I clicked yes out of stupidity. Since I had not tried anything before I did NOT have them installed so the next time I entered "n" and hit enter.
My next problem was that the driver installation of the fastboot drivers failed. The reason being because my phone was plugged in. So either 1. Dont have it plugged in when you start or 2. Unplug it and go to the support_files folder and double click Driver.exe
Once that was installed it said to press enter to continue, this is where I plugged my phone back in and I made sure it was in charge only mode.
Then it took some time (2 mins aprox.) and then It brought up a new window, the revolutionary window, READ what the little box has to say! I then scrolled down to the bottom of the Web Browser it had opened up (On my computer) and click Download for Windows, then you click cancel. And then I entered in my OS, My phone, my HBOOT (Which for me was 1.05) and then my serial number (It says it in the DOS window that is titled revolutionary. After that click Ok and then copy the beta code it gives you. Then right click on the DOS window (The top bar) and go down to Edit and click paste.
Then you hit enter and it does some more stuff (Like 1.5 mins) and then it will ask you if you want to install clockwork recovery mod. Click Y, and hit enter. You want clockwork if you're a noob like me.
Then once it was done the program suddenly closed and I felt abandoned! I really would of loved the Microsoft word paper clip coming up saying "Looks like you're trying to root your phone! Want some help?"
Anyways, on my phone it said revolutionary at the top and FASTBOOT USB a little lower, so I hit the down volume button a couple times until it finally responded. Then I highlighted recovery and hit the power button. Once it was in the recovery window I went to install ZIP from SD-Card and selected Select from SD-Card and then I scrolled ALL the way down where my su.zip should of been. It wasn't.
So I went back through the menus clicking go back until I got to reboot, I rebooted my phone. When it came back on I put it into disk mode, and I went into support_files on my computer in the DowngradeBypass folder and I copied su.zip to the root of my SD-Card. Then I turned off my phone (And unplugged it) and held the power button down WHILE holding the volume down. I then went through the same process as I mentioned above, this time my su.zip WAS there I selected it and then scrolled down to Confirm and it installed!
Then I went back and rebooted my phone and went it came on I went to the market place and downloaded barnicle (Wifi tether, needs root And despite all my set backs, It worked!!!!
So that was my experience everyone I hope it was helpful to at least someone!
DowngradeBypass.zip = awesomness
+1. A friend upgraded to a new thunderbolt runnig 2.3.4. Revolutionary couldnt pull it off. Used the no DowngradeBypass.zip, obtained root, s-off, and cwm. backedup sense, wiped flashed Thundershead 1.4, Gapps, IMO 6.1, and webkitaccel. Runs smooth as butter!
Thanks for this post! What's the best rom with built-in wifi tethering?
where to paste the beta key
Hey Jeremy,
Thanks a lot for the post. I'm hitting a problem on my end though and I'm hoping you can shed some light...
After completing this step:
"Then it took some time (2 mins aprox.) and then It brought up a new window, the revolutionary window, READ what the little box has to say! the DOS window automatically closes and there is nowhere for me to paste the beta key. Any ideas?
Thanks!

[Q] Rooting: I have no idea?

Currently running 2.3.3
I've tried rooting this damn phone twice, followed the steps yet every time my phone just resets completely.
I honestly don't know what I'm doing wrong ... Is there a guide that's VERY specific in the steps to root? I tried youtube, couldn't find anything, and the method of going into boot was different so I'm lost...
Here's the questions I have on the steps...
1. Install latest Clockworkmod Recovery using NVFlash, if you haven’t already done so. - What do I do with this file ?
2. Download the root zip package referenced above.
3. Put the zip package on your internal or external sd card on your G2X. Do not unzip the package.
4. Turn off phone and boot into Clockworkmod Recovery by pressing volume down and power and hold until the fancy LG (second one) appears. - Isn't this the phone reset method? The youtube video I watched said to press "volume up + volume down"
5. Select install zip from sd card. Select and flash the root zip package. Note: You navigate in Clockwordmod Recovery by using the volume keys up and down and commit the action by pressing the power button. - Install the zip or clockword mod?
6. Reboot your phone. You are now rooted.
- I just need something really in depth, step by step by step ... If anyone is willing it'd be nice >.<
-Thanks
use this video
the rom selection is your choice I dont know what you want to do, obviously since you just stated you want root (SU permissions)
if you know what you basically want let me know in here or PM and I'll help you out. Only cause you kind of searched, yet you are obviously brand new to all of this.

Well that video is what completely confused me ... the process seemed different in its steps to root. I followed the steps in that video, and the steps in the original post but still couldn't get into the root..
Now I will say I have no idea on which ROM to pick. In fact, that's probably what messed me up in the first place.. Do you have any suggestions? The Hellfire ROM seems to be popular amongst users on the forum. Basically, I just want a stable ROM that's going to allow me to remove stock applications, free up bloatware, and make my phone just run overall smoother.. and of course ability to over clock, under clock. Extra goodies are a plus ..

-Rooting takes 15 minutes if you follow directions, after you get all the downloads.
-Get the apx drivers first install them regardless of everything it helps connect the phone and makes sure the process goes smoothly, if you do not know how to install drivers for a phone... Google it.
http://www.mediafire.com/?kgfk5234e4hhggc
I will suggest this since it easiest now a days. Read the directions over and over. then proceed to attempt.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566681
after power up with the recovery select wipe/ format data (this will wipe the phone so your apps and settings are kaput so, make sure you have your google contacts and what not backed up with regular sync through settings. Your texts will be gone also, there are apps to back those up, search them if you want. After booting up and wiping select to install rom from which ever area you put the zip files at (DO NOT PUT THEM IN A FOLDER JUST LAY THEM ON THE THE SD-CARD WITH DRAG AND DROP.) First rom then kernel, if you choose to use it. then power on.
The rom I suggest for you, it is easy one step to install, then boot... LET SET FOR 10 MINUTES AFTER YOU BOOT UP! This allows the phone to adjust itself and all it's new entities and what not.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400620
For the kernel to over-clock and under-clock (if you do not know then Google it).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19506802&postcount=1065
Make sure the rom and kernel are on the external sd-card if that is what you are using or vice versa.
I think that covers everything I don't know if it does or not right now as I just winged this altogether. Any questions ask I'll answer in a timely matter as I'm just watching Californication right now, lol.
ive followed what you said and it wont let me download the links that videos says to. takes me to a site and ask for money. help
I gave you all the links, you said the video didn't help so disregard that. Idk what else to tell you.

This is my take, to help. This is as dumb as it gets to install CWM and root (optional). Click Thanks when you're done.
Step 1.
Download the APX Drivers from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?q0hn0d6etw9hg8b
I mirrored it to my mediafire. Thanks go to TGA_Gunnman!
OPTIONAL: to root, read this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24992835&postcount=182
Step 2.
Turn off your phone, pull the battery.
Step 3.
Connect a microusb cable to your computer.
Step 4.
Extract the "One-Click-G2x-recovery-flasher-09-23.rar" to a folder. You'll see 2 folders, NVFlash and APX.
Step 5.
Right click My Computer, click on Manage. Go to Device Manager. Open up the APX folder you extracted, as well as the NVFlash folder (see Step 8).
Step 6.
Push and hold Vol Up+Vol Down. Plug in the USB Cable to your phone. Your computer will beep, indicating device plugged in, unless you have it on mute. This does NOT reset your phone in any way. You SHOULD get a dialog telling you to install drivers or something. If not, switch to Device Manager and you should see an uninstalled device.
Step 7.
Install those drivers (in the APX folder).
Step 8.
Open up the NVFlash folder and locate "OneClickRecoveryFlasher.exe". Run it.
Step 9.
Take your pick if you want internal recovery or external recovery (w/ sdcard), then click it. You'll see a S/W download on your phone. Wait until the blue screen finishes. If no errors pop up, see Step 10. If an error does pop up, redo install (as instructed).
Step 10.
Let go of Vol Up+Vol Down. Pull out USB cable. Get into CWM recovery using Vol Up+Power when phone is off. Let go when you see the blue wavey LG logo.
the problem i am having is trying to get that flasher to download
Rooting is not for everyone. If you are having this much trouble, you should find a friend that has done it and let them go at it.
