[Q] Phone Calls on Tablets - General Questions and Answers

Can someone out there please explain to me the reason why U.S. carriers don't allow 3G/4G tablets access to their phone networks??? ... other than simple greed??? ... especially since carriers outside the U.S. do allow tablets to make phone calls.
I'd go out right now and replace my Nook Color with another 7" tablet that has 3G/4G + bluetooth if I could ditch my smartphone and use the tablet for calls with a bluetooth headset.
Its stupid to have to lug two almost identical devices around just so I can make phone calls and read my ebooks. The only practical differences between my Nook Color and my Droid X is that one has a 3G interface and the other has a 7" screen.

get any 3g/4g tablet, install google voice, assign yourself a phone number.
boom. you have free unlimited texting and phone calls over the cell network to all US numbers.

You prob need an app like GrooVe IP to use Google Voice on a tablet.

[Q] Is there a VOIP app for WP?

Does anyone know of an app that uses internet connection for calling purposes?
I am on AT&T and have a limited minutes plan, and am not left with much at the end of the month.
There are such apps on other platforms like talkatone app in ios devices, which allow users to call using cellular data or wifi, thus not using the valuable minutes of the plan.
I was just wondering if anyone know about any such app on WP devices, or anyone interested in making one.
Thanks
Search for Govoice - it uses google voice.
Also Tango.me (it does video and voice and is also available to android and iphone although it is currently only phone to phone or phone to pc communication)
Thanks for replying,
I already use Govoice and tango. Govoice uses the google voice number, but makes the call through your cellular network which uses the minutes on your plan.
Tango on the other hand uses data or wifi to make the call which is what I want, but it can only call other tango users which is very limiting.
I want an app which dials whatever number I give it, and instead of using the cellular network, uses data or wifi.
I personally dont have access to ios or android device, but there is an app called "Talkatone" on both these platforms (i think, but am sure about ios) which calls every number in the directory using only data or wifi.
An app like that is what I am looking for.
Haven't tried this one but search the marketplace for mobilevoip . You have to use a headset with it and it's beta
Also MS confirmed Skype is coming soon
I use MobileVoiP, best program for me, because I am a customer of Poivy.
You can talk in almost every country for free

[Q] Tablet to remotely place phone calls

I recently bought a tablet and I want to be able to place calls through my phone by dialing on my tablet. I can access the dialer by creating a shortcut to the activity using ADW, but it says voice calling is not supported. I know cars can place calls remotely using their voice recognition, so it is definitely possible on the phone's end. Does anyone here know if there is a way to remotely trigger a phone call?
Good question, I have not seen away yet. I do know you can send text and check you Google voice mail through Google Voice...
Try Tablet Talk. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apdroid.tabtalk
Sent from my GT-P3113 using xda premium
I've been a Tablet Talk fan but it requires that you be on same WiFi SSID or Bluetooth. The bluetooth is very portable, needs no data connection.
Talkatone https://play.google.com/store/search?q=talkatonetakes about 10 minutes to setup and works beautifully.
Cloud SMS is new and works wonderfully for text https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5iZWNoYXJkLmNsb3Vkc21zIl0. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951631 I think with your phone on and connected to internet via DATA or WiFi, you can text with the tablet anywhere you can get an internet connection.
If you want to do some work and use true SIP dialing, I use this:
[Mod] Make/Receive Free Phone Calls! {V3} [Now Easier!] http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1823701
I am a customer of them, for my home phone, and I just found out they make an app. Not only for the android, but for ipad to as well.
Bit pricy, but I am already registerd with them for a two year contract for only $20.00..., all it offers is a either a "free" phone number or I can use the one I have setup for my home phone.
If this is not for you you can search for VOIP in the app market.
MagicJack App
This idea was great, thanks for the thought...!!!

[Q] Answering smartphone call with Tablet

Would it be possible to somehow answer a call from a smartphone on a tablet?
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and I'm thinking of buying a Note 10.1 2014 Ed.
I want to be able to use the Note for a lot more than just a tablet (including a universal remote, xbox control, music station...) and I was wondering if it was possible to answer and hang up a phone call using it.
If you're not following well, lets say I get a phonecall on my S3, but it's at the other end of the room or downstairs or somewhere I couldn't get to in time to answer... could I use my tablet to answer it, talk to the person on the other end and then hang up at the end?
Perhaps using an App which would send all signals over wifi...

While I'm seeking an answer for my thread, what I'm trying to accomplish is almost the opposite of you. I'm trying to take my smartphone and make it appear as a tablet from AT&T's perspective so I don't have to pay the "phone" part of the plan.
What you're trying to accomplish is pretty easy with Google Voice combined with Talkatone or Groove IP.
1) Set up your Google Voice account with a phone number
2) Tell everyone you changed your number to the Google #.
3) In GVoice settings, set the forwarding to your carrier's number AND to your Google Chat account.
4) Install and sign into your TABLET using Talkatone or Groove IP (Do not install Talkatone or Groove IP on your phone - or else it might conflict on which device to send the call to).
When someone calls your GVoice number, your tablet and phone will both ring (starting with your tablet). You can choose which device to answer with. You can also make your home phone ring and your mom's phone ring all at the same time and answer with whatever you want with the proper forwarding numbers.
For me right now, my phone (not my tablet) is signed into my GVoice account using the Talkatone. When someone calls my GVoice #, my Talkatone responds first (either because data is more responsive or google decides to try data first) then my phone rings. This way I can choose to hang up my phone and answer using Talkatone to enable VOIP instead of using my minutes.

[Q] Dialer/Contacts for Wifi Decives?

Dear friends,
I want to buy i tablet for my mom, who is really a newbie
I thought of buying her a wifi tablet. Much cheaper and will do the trick for her. as she only uses the internet for some facebook and communication
The problem is: She needs to deal with contacts for using Whatsapp and Viber, even if she doesn't actually need a sim card or traditional dialing
It seems that I have to pay for a 3G tablet just for this matter, because i don't thing there's a way to make a wifi tablet deal - exactly - with numbers and contacts and sync with google contacts the same way a 3G tablet does.
So I wanted to ask this: is it really impossible to have phone and dialer the usual way on these devices (just like when you use a regular tablet with no SIM card)? Is it totally software oriented or it really can't do without a SIM card slot?

Huawei Watch Sport 2 LTE SIM works on Tmobile USA LEO-DLXX

The Huawei Watch Sport 2 LTE SIM (LEO-DLXX) works on Tmobile USA
Before I purchased this watch I couldn't find any definitive information regarding whether this watch would work on the USA Tmobile network. It does work in 3G HSDPA and 2G H+ modes in my area with very good reception. Standalone call quality is very clear, with people on the other line surprised to learn that I am talking with them via a watch speakerphone and not a phone or headset. This watch does not support the Tmobile USA LTE bands, but I think that is a non-issue for my use case.
The purpose of this device is so I can leave my phone behind on occasion, yet still have limited connectivity. I have been using the watch with wifi off, cellular on automatic, bluetooth on, with OK Google off. With a mix of Cellular and Bluetooth use I am getting a full day of use running the latest Wear 2.1 firmware.
To activate on Tmobile you need to add a wearable line to an existing line for $15 per month ($10 with autopay). You can then "pair" this line with your phone line so both devices send and receive SMS messages and make and receive phone calls from the phone line number. Some Tmobile CSRs don't understand how to add a non-Tmobile supplied wearable to their system, so you might need to hang up and call again. First you need to call regular customer service to add the line, then they transfer you to a Digits CSR to add the new wearable line to your main line.
The only apps I use are Ultimate Watch 2, Google Fit, Messages for SMS, and Whatsapp through linked notifications. I wish there was a standalone Whatsapp so I could send new Whatsapp messages - right now I can only reply to Whatsapp notifications.
So far, very impressed with this device, especially with the $250 ebay via Hong Kong seller price.
I am looking forward to future generations of LTE Wear OS watches. Once someone introduces a new more power efficient chipset with USA LTE support, the platform is a long term winner. I am not sure what Google is thinking by neglecting this market. From my experience the wearable market is going to be a long term winner once technology makes minor additional advances.
Thanks for this information since there is hardly anything online stating which carriers work. Do you really have to use the digits program though? Why can't I just ask for a sim card with a different number from T-mobile
Thanks
You can start a whatsapp conversation by using assistant, just say "send a whatsapp message to <contact name>"
