ICS music on stock nexus? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any way to flash the new music app with the stock recovery?

No. The stock recovery won't flash unsigned .zips.

May be a dumb question but... it can't be signed???

Root and adb push to /system/framework

Yes. Wait 2-3 months and install the ICS OTA.
[/condescention] Sorry, I just felt I had to say it. I'm ready to accept my lashings, now.

New ICS music app is in .apk form so it doesnt get flashed. But you need to be rooted so you can delete the regular music.apk and move the new one..

Thanks guys. I can do without it. No root for me..

Voodoo Wolfson DAP sound and long battery life are 100% reasons why you should root.
Especially if this is a music topic...
But I digress.

Lmao. No. I've been rooting since the Droid 1. My last nexus s decided to permanently mess up wallet just because I rooted. And I've always been much more satisfied with the stock Tom than any other rom or kernel.

If/when you see the OTA update...

Please check /cache and copy all files from it before rebooting to install.
That way, we can get a copy.
For more advanced users, please run a logcat during download process, so that we can try and get a URL to download it manually.
Thanks!
no prob I was just saying in another thread that i am new to the forums and a verizon wireless employee. I was just about to post a thread letting all the devs know that i have access to info a few days (sometimes...you guys are good) before the general public. I also have a thunderbolt that im not afraid to brick trying new things (giunea pig) because i can get it replaced being an employee.

I'm assuming that if you're rooted you shouldn't touch any updates until they've been modified by the devs?

Honestly I am noobish myself but from what I understand if you CAN get the update, it may unroot your device but you just have to do the last few steps of the rooting process over to gain root again. If you are using a custom ROM you may have to manually push the update to the phone.
Again this is not absolute but this is what I believe to be true. If I am mistaken please correct me. This is why I think the OP wants to be able to download it from a website...and also to tear it down for any new goodies

There's been some talk that they'll force-push the update. Dunno the veracity of that. I'm thinking about returning to stock beforehand.
What can we do to stop the OTA?

If that's the case, there must be a way to block or prevent this. Would any devs care to add their valuable input?
Would switching to an AOSP make any difference?
The release date is 05/03/2011. That means, we have ample time to get a plan in place. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would hate to re-root their phone.
Is it possible for them to lock the bootloader with this OTA?

I would say switching to aosp would prevent it as it prevented the updating of the prl.
No. In motorola phones they are locked by hardware. If you were to install a new kernel it trips a component that basically bricks your phone and to disable the trip you would need to crack military grade encryption. We are okay.

I already put in a different thread that verizon has announced that the ota is scheduled for release 5/3. I have noticed in the past that software updates have been released earlier than scheduled release dates (e.g. froyo update for fascinate was available 7pm the night before)

According to this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027706) in the development forum, CM7 is listed under "AOSP Based." As for senseless ROM's, I think it depends on the specific ROM in question, as some are and some aren't (but I could be wrong).

I might have just saw the update. I saw something out of the corner of my eye in the notification bar but when I turned my head nothing. I then rebooted my phone and I saw something else out of the corner of my eye (I have really good peripheral vision). There is a small chance it was the clock changing times (yes my vision is that good). I will let everyone know if the phone feels faster and more updated to know for sure.

No it's not the same, it's not rooted or tampered with, and the installation method is different. If you want to completely unroot your phone go flash the stock ruu

No you will not loose those things. The first post describes how to get into bootloader after flashing the update. Only your system partition (rom) and kernel will be the official ruu images.
I just noticed there may be a problem with the name of the .zip. There is a gap in the name so you will probably have to rename it and delete the gap in order for the recovery to be able to flash it.
I will work on fixing it later on but for now renaming it won't hurt the update at all
Thanks again, you have just created my new "fall back plan"...

This is also good for devs to get a chance to try the stock ota if they want to mess around with it. That was the main reason for this update. Hopefully someone will help to get the bootloader unlocked for people who buy a new evo shift . But luckily this update doesn't already have the locked bootloader in it

2.11.605.2 ruu

http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...build-2-11-605-2-ruu-for-the-htc-thunderbolt/
Anyone deodexing and rooting this?
Nice find.
Hopefully its the released version of GB for the Tbolt and will work its way into a vartiety of ROMs, such as NonS3ns3.
Do you know what radios go with it?
Is it safe to flash this if I am rooted, running gingerbread with s-off? I know I would lose root. Thanks.
As it stands right now, if you are currently rooted then do not flash this ruu.
Wait until the devs gave time to build and test.
Once a Rom can be pulled from this build, we may get an opportunity to try it out ;-)

I'm pretty sure he didn't mean the other way around. Think about it... If you take the camera libs from 605.2 put them in a 605.0 ROM you have added all the changes from the new version without creating another virtually identical ROM.

You need to have a custom ROM like cyanogen mod installed. Is that the case or are you running the software the phone came with (stock ROM)?

you probably shouldve made a backup before doing it.
If you want to revert to what you had before, you could extract the systemui.apk from your current rom zip. Then delete the one in system/app of your phone and paste the original one there. Change the permissions to rw-r-r, then reboot.

Go to settings>about. Does it say anything about cyanogenmod or another rom name?
Or are you on stock touchwiz rom?
Maybe try asking the person that rooted the phone if they flashed a rom.
This is what happens when you try to do something you don't understand and don't do the proper research. Your lucky that's all you did and you didn't end up with a brick with a voided warranty.
The roms your on is in the about phone section. Most likely a stock rom.
