[Q] Newbie needs help with custom roms and rooting - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not really a newbie on XDA, but I just got my Transformer TF101 today and have a few questions. I know I risk repeating some existing questions, but still have no clear answers after searching and reading this forum for a couple of days and would appreciate some advice.
I have a serial number on the bottom of the device as B50KASxxxxxx - I've read about B60 rootable and B70/B80 non-rootable. What's my B50? Is it safe to root? Did I get an older model (from newegg.ca) - any disadvantages? Edit - I found this one, looks like it's rootable.
I have firmware 8.2.3.9-20110423 - should I install OTA update before rooting and custom rom, or just do custom rom install right away?
What is considered the best and most stable custom rom that has a status bar hide option?
At this moment, what is the must up to date and easiest guide to safe rooting and installing custom rom? The ones I found seem a bit outdated, not sure which one to follow...
Some (or all?) custom roms have status bar hide option included, but none mentions how to control it, hide/restore bar. How does it work in practice? Annoying bar is my main reason to root it...
In your opinion, is it better to root it and use stock roms, or install custom roms?
Thanks!

not a noob? so.....your familiar with searching? guess not. the time it took you to type all of that you could have searched and found your answer yourself. heres 1 of the 50 million threads made on the subject...

Don't guess. Yes, I'm familiar with searching and was searching a reading for two days before writing this. I might have missed something but there is too much information. BTW thank you for your link but it does not have any reference to B50, which was one of my questions.
An even if I missed answers to some of my questions, there are no clear anwers to others, or they might be outdated.

your right.that thread wasn't the answer. i said it was a start.it DOES mention the B50. and 2 days of searching? come one man there's @ least 3 threads in general alone that answer this. Do i know the answer? yes. will i tell you? no. SEARCH HARDER. i dnt care if you think im not being helpful but the fact of the matter is im trying to help you help yourself. good luck buddy

You might have issues with understanding what I write, or you just have not read it. I don't mind you not reading it - you don't have to after all, but if you do - please pay attention before replying in quite an arrogant way. As I said - I only get my TF101 today - an hour ago actually, so I could not possibly search for B50 for two days, duh! I added this question to others when typing this message, to avoid writing several messages.
As I also said, some of my questions can possibly be found through searching (although it's always good to get an up to date opinion), while others I can't find so far. Yes, I found an answer to B50 question - although not in your thread. But others are still relevant to me.
You don't have to help me - but it won't hurt to be polite and avoid arrogant replies even to ones that in your opinion did something wrong.

-I have a serial number on the bottom of the device as B50KASxxxxxx - I've read about B60 rootable and B70/B80 non-rootable. What's my B50? Is it safe to root? Did I get an older model (from newegg.ca) - any disadvantages?
B50 is rootable
-I have firmware 8.2.3.9-20110423 - should I install OTA update before rooting and custom rom, or just do custom rom install right away?
Make no different since you're installing custom ROM anyway.
-What is considered the best and most stable custom rom that has a status bar hide option?
They're all good IMO. Best if you flash them and decide for yourself. IIRC Revolver has the option to hide status bar. There are apps to do it. I'm using HoneyBar on Prime (Hidebar is good too).
-At this moment, what is the must up to date and easiest guide to safe rooting and installing custom rom? The ones I found seem a bit outdated, not sure which one to follow...
NVFLash
-Some (or all?) custom roms have status bar hide option included, but none mentions how to control it, hide/restore bar. How does it work in practice? Annoying bar is my main reason to root it...
Usually just have to press a button or somewhere on the tab, not too hard to figure out.
-In your opinion, is it better to root it and use stock roms, or install custom roms?
That's for you to decide, everyone is different. Keep in mind all the "custom" ROM right now are base on stock ROM but tweaked to be faster ect....

Thanks! I appreciate your help.

I successfully rooted it (with kit) and flashed Revolver

Hey all, just bought Xoom wifi only EUR version with 3.01 and have some questions :)

First of all, I would like to thank in advance the guys who answer my questions.
1)I ve read some threads about Xoom and I see most of you are in 3.2 and in Europe we don't have even 3.1 . How can I make it to be a US version to get the updates? Is it safe or should I wait?
2)My first priority is to find a way to root my device. I saw a one-click root way but the files are offline from xda and it says that it has issues with EUR versions. Whats your advice? Can you help me with the steps because I dont have much android knowledge?
3)Whats your opinion about custom roms for Xoom and how can I flash from 3.01?
Thanks again, and if you have any suggestions on what apps you love using in your xoom it would be great
Apps go the apps section and read.
Changing to us version and flashing roms etc go to the development section and read.
You clearly don't like to chat m8, If I found a topic for EUR but the links are offline as I said before. There are people who like to share their knowledge thats why its a q/a thread and not app section or dev section.

Hi there, welcome to the Xoom family.
Like every family, some members like to talk and others don't.
It's true that the threads you want are mostly in the Development section.
Since you are on Wifi only it should be pretty easy for you to flash the US wifi image (you will actually find that in the 1st post in General) but you should read a bit just to make sure you know what steps to take. Also, language packs are available if you need a language other than English, French or Spanish, but there may be some complications.
I would advise you against using any type of one click rooting method. The Xoom is easy to unlock and root, but is more complicated than many phones. On the plus side, it's pretty hard to brick as long as you follow instructions. Prepare to use adb and you'll do fine. Once you've unlocked and flashed the US image, you will get the OTA updates as soon as you are on a wifi connection. This is where you need to see which rooting method will be best for you. You will need to install the Tiamat Clockwork Mod Recovery 3.2.0.0 (from solarnz's thread) so you can flash from the micro sdcard) There are ways to root from 3.0, 3.1 and from 3.2. Head over to the Development section and look for what you want. Once you are rooted, check out the Team Tiamat Xoom Rom 2.0 Manta Ray. It really rocks. You will have to wipe user data for many of these steps, so don't bother with setting up more than you have to until you are at you final destination, so to speak.
Good luck!

[Q] Updating my new Desire S

Hello,
First of all, thanks for this great forum, i'm new to android and being here is really helpful.
I've read some of the guides posted, still i'd like to have some tips and infos.
I'm from Italy and my Desire S is still working on Gingerbread (!). I would like to update the firmware, if not to Jelly Bean (since the custom one is still beta, but advise me here), at least to ICS, but i don't know the routine to follow (ROOT, then Flash one of the custom ROMS? Being in S-Off mode is needed i guess). Another thing i don't get is flashing radios..
Help would be really appreciated, THANKS.
There is nothing to tell you that you can't find by reading the stickies and understanding what to do.

If you haven't messed with your phone, i.e. rooted it, flashed any fancy thirty party rom, etc, and the phone is running official HTC ROM and in the exact same state as you bought it, I'd suggest OTA and upgrade to official ICS since you are new to android. Go to setting - about phone then update from there.
If you'd like to try other ROMs then there's plenty guide in this forum already.
Imo official 4.0.4 is a bad idea.
1) It has bugs
2) hboot 2.02 cannot be downgraded without htcdev

My Desire S is new and "untouched". For what i had got, the official htc release is to be installed manually and has some issues, so I had thought a custom and more recent ROM would have been better.

Then use revolutionary (S-OFF) not unlock via htcdev.com, 4ext recovery and you are good to go
If you are on Sense 3 you will have to downgrade in order to use Revolutionary.io
And of course I concider the ROM in my signature as the best to date

If you are going custom better not use OTA
Revolutionary will install custom recovery so the next thing will be a backup of your stock ROM and installing the Rom.zip from the sdcard via the recovery. No rooting, because all custom ROMs are pre-rooted.
My ROM is ICS, there is no complete stable JB yet but once you have s-off you can try them all within minutes. And do not forget to sync/backup your data (contacts, etc) to Google or with some app from the Play Store. And read some guides before starting anything. I am just giving you directions not a tutorial

So why do you "root"? Just to unlock the phone without touching the FW?
Going custom i guess it's the only way, because htc is not going to update anymore, so better learn how to.
Anyway THANKS A LOT, it's more clear now

Yes you can root your current software (the stock one) if you need just root for an app or something specific without changing the software.
But going custom means to run Android and Sense version which you will never have officially. And they all come pre-rooted

They have different versions, because they are ported from different devices and there are difference between them. Not only visual but also performance.
More info about each ROM you will find in the first post of its thread.

The best app for applications and data backup is titanium backup. It also allows you to make a flashable update zip you can flash after installing a new rom

Ok, and for saving an image of my stock ROM, just in case i need to go back?
Nandroid backup is a part of the recovery and not an app.
Start reading instead of asking, please. The procedure is covered a million times in a million places.
To the answering guys, (almost) off-topic:
I have a riddle for you, or actually, a somewhat sad observation to share and see your opinions. Since this thread is one of the examples for what I'm going to talk about, and it's useless anyway, I won't feel any remorse diverting it.
I've seen several threads during the last couple of weeks where a random noob got the best out of one of the knowledgeable members of the community - in this and other forums - and they helped him instead of sending him to read stuff that he was supposed to be reading to know the answer.
In absolutely all of those threads, noob questions continued and deteriorated to the most basic ones. There wasn't even one thread where the noob wouldn't continue with flood of basic FAQ-sort of questions.
I've wrote in a couple of them more or less what I wrote here - an unpleasant message to stop the flood of baby questions.
All of the noobs were offended.
All of the noobs actually searched and found their answer after that message, and stopped the flood (with a message that here, they were so great they actually found everything themselves).
It's kinda sad, don't you think? Quite a few times bad treatment seems the most efficient way to achieve the best results... Guess there's no miraculous other way I'm missing, or maybe there is?
(P.S. I'm also moderating a local motorcyclists forum, and keeping the same harsh line in technical sub-forum. Works 100% for >5 years already. But sometimes it gets you wondering about human nature...)

Howdy, welcome to the Atrix 2 community! So, you managed to find the rooting method - great! Now, there are within this same forum the answers to the rest of your questions. A short answer (without doing the 'dirty work' of searching these things out for you) is that yes, there is custom recovery for this device. In fact, there are more than one. You'll have to do your own research as to which you choose and which works with the different ROMs available. As for a "best" ROM or recovery, that is all subjective. Some ROMs do not play well with other recoveries, and some ROMs have features that others do not. That said, you'll have to dig around in the development section to see which one suits your desires. There's a ton of useful threads and guides here, but you have to be the one to read up on them. No one can (or should be expected) to give their own personal opinion on what's 'best'. You'll just have to determine that for yourself...

BUT I have a stuck (or dead??) Pixel at bottom of my screen near dialer icon. Only one and visible on black only. I am thinking of using my warranty. But worried what if they give me a refurbished and scratched up phone in return of this spot less one...
Here's the dead/stuck pixel(attached, bottom left under gmail icon, above menu icon..
EDIT:
I just called service centre, they said we will replace screen, and when I asked will you be careful not to scratch the phone??
He said, when we open phone scratches are bound to occur!! how rude!!

[Q] SGS4G

Okay, Let me start by saying two things. Yes I'm new to this. And yes I looked in the forums for something similar.
Now, basically I just recently rooted my Samsung Galaxy S 4G. It is Model SGH-T959V, Firmware 2.2.1, Baseband T959VUVKB5, Build FROYO.VUVKB5. There are a few things I was wanting to ask the community.
Is it possible or a good idea to update it to JB, ICS, GB. And if so what are the benefits and procedures to do so?
Secondly, I've been looking into getting some custom roms. So far the only things I have found haven't been comprehensible. They either require a higher firmware version, have no explanation as to what the rom does, or have highly technical steps which are way beyond me. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what would be some good roms? What they do? And the benefits of using them?
If this has all been discussed somewhere else and have just missed it, please feel free to link to the thread and close this one.

First, you should start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470716 Second here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V now you have all the source of instructions and guides to follow all you have to do is take some time to read and search. and now good luck to you and your phone..
Well, as for the Odin thing a lot of people have said it can brick your device, and that's not something wanna do.
As for the other guides, I started it, I got to the point where I'm updated to GB 2.3.6. The rest of the stuff didnt say what it was for, so I was unsure as whether or not to proceed. Are they required for flashing ROMs? Or just extra stuff?
The last one didn't seem to have anything really useful, but I didnt look at every last thing.
And what about useful ROMs? I've looked around online and a lot people recommend Cyanogenmod, although no one has said what it does. I looked at the steps and it seemed over complicated to install for someone new to this stuff.

In this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V it will guide you to rest of Custom rom's and kernel's that you must need to use in order to
start flashing custom rom and kernels. the rest is a guide which you can use and it will save you'r time from looking around.. The only rom which is very much stable to our phone are
GB and ICS while Cyanogenmod 10/10.1 are still in Alpha and beta stage..
Yeah, I saw that as I looked through it more. Just a lot of it is way over my head so it's gonna take me a while to get to it
That's right, you will never get lost by following that guide because everything you need to know are already in there.. just take some time to read and you
will be enlightened as you go on the process..
Well, my biggest problem is I keep looking for useful and cool ROMs, but haven't found any so far. So at the moment I can justify to myself to go through all those things just to not have anything to put on it. So far I like the GB look and feel much better than FROYO. I've found a few minor apps here and there, but so far nothing that has required flashing.
Or you can check some of the great ICS rom's we have, here i am going to provide some links of it for you.

of the great rom's courtesy of our great dev's..
Cool, I'll check out those GB ones. Thanx
Good luck and make sure to follow as per OP's instruction of flashing the respective rom's to avoid further problem, u won't get lost as every instructions are provided
for the ease of use and flashing.. and take some time to each and every rom you flash so that you can personally experience the goodness and you can make a choice which rom you think it's best for you..

I guess we better wait....

Hi guys ! This is my 4th Galaxy and every time first thing I've done before ROOT -->CWM--->FULL Back up within CWM--> Unlock with CODE--> Install CM --> Enjoy
That was my formula always and with it I'd be able to save Stock/Rooted fresh OS in case something needs to be done and because I did it with CWM it's really easy to restore. But this time I think I'll hold my horses. Too much chatter about things that was not a problem before ...some OTA updates, lock bootloader, etc. Can anyone create post that cannot be replied to with Q/A that matters and update it as more info become available. I mean questions like should I OTA update (if one available), is good root method available or not, is CWM available etc. Just a few things that EVERYONE in here needs to know. Because as of right now everything is a mess. Bootloader hacked ..but it's not REALLY hacked ...no CWM on official page yet ...some sim unlock method available (non code) etc. I got this nice device and REALLY want to do above formula and start enjoying my i337 but because so many questions and no proper answers I can't. So I guess what I am saying Moderator create Office Q and A that CANNOT be replied to and just update with latest info that checked and working properly. Because too much noise right now. I hope I am not alone asking for some clarity.

Or you could take a little of your precious time to read what is already posted...but I understand how you have better things to do.
There is no real "clarity" of it. It is what it is for now. There are plenty of discussion and info about everything here.
Let's keep all of it out of this thread for now.
