[Q] pushing app to system - General Questions and Answers

so it seems its a system limitation when using dialer apps where the missed call notification doesn't get cleared when opening the dialer app.. the stock phone app needs to be opened in order to clear it...
i'm running cm7.1 on nexus s 4g.. just installed touchpal dialer.. i read on this site
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2007024/push-my-apk-to-system-app
that you could push the app into the system folder and that would address the problem.. i downloaded the app from the market so no idea how to get the apk..
i assume if i could get a hold of the apk.. i could use root explorer to change the persmissions, then move the file into system/app and then install the app??
any help would be appreciated.
p.s. all i really want is the search feature of these apps which stock dialer doesn't have.. which is a big oversight by google not to have this.. so if any other solutions are available.. great.. love to hear them

The apk should be somewhere in /data/app, there are also apps that let you backup apk files to sdcard.
Afterwards remount /system to read+write and push the apk file to /system/app.

do i need to uninstall the app from /data/app after? or should i leave that file in there

Using Root Explorer, find the apk in /data/app, long-press and select move. Navigate to /system/app, mount r/w (by pressing the button at the top), and paste. Long-press the apk again, select permissions and set to rw-r--r--, then mount r/o and reboot.
Voila! Your user app is now a system app. You can also use Titanium Backup to convert a user app to system app and vice versa. As I have the paid version I'm not sure if this feature is available in the free version.

thanks.. seems to work now.. i'm surprised apps can't automatically install in that way to notifications can be dealt with.. guess they don't have permissions to install into system?..appreciate the help.. all works now!!

so seems doesn't like to work like that.. every time i reboot i get a force close popup... then i have to delete the app and restart.. had permissions set correctly and everything

[Q] How do I move this app to system folder?

I want to use Location Spoofer to spoof my GPS location. In it's description it says:
"Spoof your device location, make it appear to be in another place.
A simple utility to set a fake wireless networks location.
You have to allow mock locations under Settings -> Applications -> Development
(rooted phones can spoof location with mock locations disabled, move the app to /system/app to get that)"
I want to be able to spoof my location WITHOUT checking the "allow mock locations" option checked.
My Droid X is rooted with Z4. I can't see the apps in the data folder. I thought I would be able to once I was rooted? What a I missing?
I used Atsro to view folders and files, but the data folder was empty.
you have to use root explorer or super manager and move the .apk to /system/app

Great! Now where is the APK installed by default? I thought I knew but I guess not.
Let me do some exploring real quick
edit: they save to /data/app

Ok, now I don't see a /data folder. I see it when I use Astro File Manager, but it is empty. Using Super Manager, I don't even see the folder at all...any idea why?
I believe you have to enable root in super manager. Let me check (I use root explorer)
Edit: enter "File Explorer" and then hit your menu button and select "Setup" then "Enable ROOT Function" then hit "Back up level folder" a couple times and you should see the /data folder

I have moved it, but when trying to open it, it crashes.
Easy
Root your device
Install Root Explorer.apk (google search)
Open Root Explorer. Then copy your app .apk file to root/system/app (check if you choose RO instead of RW).
Reboot and enjoy!
Do adb push n set permissions

I figured it out, thanks for the help This post was really helpful :victory:
What if I use root explore but it just restarts the phone instead of actually transferring to system?
The phone is rooted and it's an HTC One m8 I've tried multiple apps to move it to the system but none of them work.
When I tried to transfer the apk to the /system/app, Error is displayed - "The item base.apk could not be written". This is after giving the permission to modify the /system/app folder. Any help is appreciated!
I rooted my phone and have the fake gps thing, but when I go to system mover app and try to make it a system app, it says done, reboots, and it has Uninstalled my app, wth

Open file explorer. Go to system/app folder. Search for moved app and install again. If it not moved then other app mover apps.
Its actually system/priv-app.. Either way, better use link2sd or any other such app to move the fake GPS pro to system app. Then reboot.

[Q] Can't Install Themed APK

I have a stock Sensation, temp-rooted, and have a couple of themed apps I like (TweetDark, Transparent G+). Using root explorer, I navigate to downloads on my SD, select the APK and select install. It prompts that the app will replace an existing one, keeping user data (normal). It asks me to accept permissions (normal). It says installing (normal). Then is says Application Not Installed with a Done button (definitely not normal). I have third party apps allowed, and it let me install an APK that wasn't an overwrite, so why can't I install my themed APKs? Any suggestions/information would be most helpful.

you cant because the stock rom is .odex you need to de-odex the rom or apk for it to work or backup both the apk and .odex files to your sd now delete the .odex file install your apk and reboot
Thanks for your answer. I was afraid it would be something like that. The phone's a loaner as part of a T-Mobile feedback program so I don't want to muck with it to much.

Have you tried just extracting the text messaging app from any stock Rom? I was on aviator Rom(Moto) and just switched to eclipse (aosp). I just extracted the apk and ran it. Then I used titanium backup to freeze the stock aosp messaging app (or u can back up and uninstall).
The stock app might reinstall on reboot since its a system app. To remove you can use root explorer and navigate to /system/app and mount r/w then delete the messaging.apk. you can also copy the Moto text messaging apk in that same directory and change the permission to rw-r-r. You can accomplish all this with root explorer or any file manager with r/w to system functionality.
I saw a post somewhere that had the zip files for a dark and light version, but can't remember where, but with any system apk, you could pretty much follow the steps I outlined. Just be sure to back up anything you delete just in case.

Here are all the files needed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2049679
The app shows up in the app draw but FC every time. I guess it needs something else when running on an AOSP ROM.

I simply used twrp to copy some apps into /system/app
Hi, while millions of people wanted to change normal apps into system apps. I want to change system apps into normal apps.
I know this is the weirdest request you never found on xda history. But I need to remove system privilege on Google Photos because it blocks me from controlling background power consumption (only user app can be changed like that). I'm on realme UI 2.0 unrooted, if it has to be root I'd still take your advice. Thanks.

[Q] Put app in system

Can anybody tell me how to install apk from phone as system app
first move apk from /data/app to system/app
then move library files to /system/lib
what next???
I need full guide
Then reboot. If the app doesn't appear in your app drawer, go back to /system/app and install the apk like usual from that folder. Reboot again and see if it works.
