This seems like a long shot, but I'm wondering if there's any way to install an older version of the Android OS. I know it seems counterintuitive to want an OLDER version of Android, but it'd be really handy for app-testing purposes if I could switch between versions of the OS without resorting to emulators. Please let me known if you have any ideas.
P.S. I only have access to Nexus S and Galaxy S II phones right now, which both shipped with 2.3, so flashing an original, pre-update ROM isn't an option.
If you are rooted you should be able to find older ROMs for the nexus S based on android 2.2, so it would be easy to flash to that and revert to your backup when you are finished. As far as the SGSII it shipped with gingerbread, and I don't think a developer would take the time to port froyo to it...

It seems like all custom roms include root. I'm trying to get around SafetyNet so I'd like to find one that doesn't. I currently have CyanogenMod 13 with virtual repartition version of TWRP. Are there ROMs like this? I'm currently reading through the development forum but most don't say one way or the other, probably because they include root.
If I can't find one, are there some that can be unrooted? I don't think CyanogenMod falls into this category. I can try to hide root if nothing else and have done a lot of reading on that using SUhide, Xposed, Root Switch but I think it would be a lot easier if there was a stock-ish kit kat or higher ROM I could use and unroot.

Depending on what you need to pass SafetyNet for, I'd say you are probably out of luck on the S2.
The last official ROM (from Samsung) for the Skyrocket was Jelly Bean (4.1.2), which is too old. Unfortunately, I don't know of any third-party ROM beyond that which doesn't come with root support pre-installed, and given the S2's curious bootloader configuration, it might not pass SafetyNet even if you could find one. Then, there is the minor fact that the S2 is old enough that it might be not be approved by Google even if you could get past all the other issues.
If you really need this, it might be time to consider an upgrade. However, if you do manage to get it to work, that would be a pretty cool find for this old phone.
I'm planning on replacing my stock 4.4.2 touchwiz ROM on my rooted I9505 Galaxy S4 but I want to get a custom ROM that is running Android 6 or higher. I have never done this before so I'm wondering if there are any precautions I should take.
To my knowledge the standard process for installing new ROMs is:
1. Get into your custom recovery
2. Make a backup of your current ROM
3. Wipe system, data, dalvik cache, and cache
4. Flash the new ROM
I heard somewhere that if your current device is running some android version (in my case 4.4.2), and the new ROM you're flashing is a different android version (6.0.1 or 7.0), then when you try to restore your original ROM there might be problems.
I also read somewhere that for new roms you also want to update your radio and bootloader? None of the big youtube tutorials I've watched even mentioned these things. If someone could elaborate that would be amazing!
One last thing, if anyone knows of good ROMs that's compatible with my S4, please let me know I'm looking for something that is running the more recent android versions (6 or higher), very stable so that it can be my daily driver, and has a good camera app (I hear a lot of custom ROMs have really bad camera apps).

I have a two Relays that have served me well, and I enjoyed having them, but the time has come to pass them on to someone else. Before I do that, I'd like to update them to the most recent versions of stable-release software that is available for them.
For Cyanogen, I have:
cm-11-20150831 (this is stable)
cm-11-20160523 (this is a nightly build)
For recovery I have:
philz touch 6.48.4
I'd like to replace Philz with a newer TWRP, but the Relay is no longer listed on the TWRP website. I'm also wondering if there was ever a stable CM release newer than the one I have.
Does anyone have sources for the above?

Although I'm not a developer I have been working on my SGH T699 from T Mobile. You may already know of the JellyBean and before. Recently I've noticed new builds for the samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G like the Validus 5.0.2 or the Fat Toad. I haven't tried those yet I was trying for a higher version. With 8.0 Oreo it requires partitioning and I need to brush up on that. So I went lower to the 7.0 or the 7.1 Nougat. I started noticing a lot of broken or old links so I had to resort to fishing the internet for most of the packages apparently lost in XDA. I pretty much have all of them and was just starting to try a few out when I ran into problems like I want to keep using the keyboard and Wifi calling or a related Wifi issue. It also crashed, went into bootloop or even soft bricked within a few days. The Roms and packages I've found are highly unstable and I see many had flashing issues. So far I've been tricking my device into taking the flash and even then it doesn't hold long. I'd like 6.0 MarshMallow if I can, maybe 7.1 if they ever get stabler that'd be great. But so far the ROMs for the Galaxy S (relay) are fairly horrible to say the least. I get the impression these so-called developers aren't testing their ROM creations more than 5 minutes and then handing them off to noobs who may be very likely to brick their device trying to get it in and running, only to have it crash repetedly! Or worse, hard-bricked.
I like this device. I think I'll keep working on it.

I'm not really a very advanced user, but always had rooted devices and two that I flashed Custom Roms. This is my first Samsung, finding Touchwiz to be very different from what I used before.
I bought the S7 (930F) and had the news that it was going to be updated to Oreo, so I decided waiting for the update before tinkering with it.. But the update never came. Finally this month Samsung released the update for my region, so I would like to know which would be the best way for me to start finally using my phone that I bought for over 2 months!
My phone is still with Nougat, is it better for me to get the OTA or to flash the Firmware I downloaded from Sammobile? Any of these methods better than the other in preventing errors? I always found in PCs that a fresh clean install was better than an update, but with mobiles I don't have the experience to say.
My main objective is to experiment before doing a debloat as I'm still not sure what might be useful for me on Samsung's bloat (you are welcome to point me what is useful and what is not).
I did see that some of the Customs ROMS have different camera apps and some people were complaining about this, I particularly liked the S7 camera app and the Pro option, that's what holds me back in flashing a Custom ROM atm.
I would like to Root and I find Unlocked Bootloader to be useful to have Xposed Framework and other things that I can do having it.
As I'm a relative newbie, what would you guys recommend me doing? Please help

Lineage if you want basic and simple (sort of like stock Android). Resurrection Remix if you're a customisation nut (not a slam... I use RR).

So, I happen to have a bunch of old Huawei phones (Mercury and Ascend) and I want to use them for cameras for a security system. They are running Android 2.3.6, which we all know Google won't support and therefore it has become a major frustration to try and get any apps loaded on them. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to update them with a custom ROM that is Android 4.1 or newer where they can have the apps loaded? Or, if there is a way to get the apps loaded without an update to 4.1 or newer, I'm open to trying that as an option. It seems most of the custom ROM links don't work or were blocked by the a$$ 0's that want us all to pay for stuff that we already own.
