Atrix 2 lapdock - Motorola Atrix 2

http://www.talkandroid.com/66295-motorola-lapdock-100-coming-soon-to-verizon-sprint-and-att/
the article says enough, it said i buy phones too soon and am never going to be happy with what I have, i hope with ICS we can can have a possibility for the Atrix 1 to use this, not that i even care because i bought the old one already, or the fact that i sold myself on prime, frankly i want to take a 2 year coma and come back when i can make a decision.

Even if we do get ICS, and I'm confident we will in some form, it's still unlikely we can use this new lapdock.
Moto changed the ports on the Bionic, Photon, and Atrix 2. They're upside down, basically.
Case in point...
Atrix...

Bionic...
Unless someone comes up with another adapter to reverse this, I doubt we'll be able to use any of the new accessories.

making an adapter
It doesn't look too hard to make an adapter so that it would fit the Atrix, but the real issue is how the Atrix 2 and bionic recognize that they are plugged into the laptop dock. If it's the same method as the atrix, it's probably doable.

Looks no good compared with Atrix 4G Lapdock.

Flipping the ports is ****ed up. Hopefully it at least results in the the first gen lapdocks being dumped on the market.

sometimes a market probes like atrix1 & original lapdock are better build than successors.. with all updates, bugfixes and polishings, manufacturer is also aiming to make some savings.
the new lapdock simply looks like that some 'savings' has been made.
still would go for original lapdock if i can find it for $100-150

If you look at the picture of the new laptop dock, you can see that the connector is basically a chord that connects to the phone. You can just flip the chord or your phone and it should work.

+1. I can't believe that nobody else noticed this before posting comments about the new lapdock 100.

If you flipped the chord or the phone, the ports on either would be upside down unlike the other object.

Should be easy to adapt it to work, considering you can adapt the original webtop dock to work with other moto phones. For example, this mod for the photon.

So.. if you flip one or the other.. you're still screwed... you will have to do something similar like the hack that was mention with the Photon working on the Atrix lapdock..
Atrix 2 Ports:
Atrix 4G Port, with phone flip as was mentioned.. now USB and HDMI are on the wrong sides..

I just picked up a refurbed lapdock off of AT&T's site for $175. Seems fully functional to me. Slightly out of your price range, but with the new ones coming out, might get slightly cheaper, but don't see them dropping under $100 any time soon.

Really dont see too much of a upgrade. In fact I think it looks much worse then the original. What Motorola needs to focus on is making the Webtop on the phone more efficient. I find the softare is buggy and just not thought through enough.

Haha. Motorola honestly does suck. Erm, there is still one thing that could be done. Never actually seen the port of the new lapdock but if someone can open it and if the mini usb and the hdmi ports are two separate physical ports inside the one huge lapdock 100 port, removing the port would mean two separate ports along with their respective cables inside. That would make it easier for anybody wanting a lapdock 100 working on the Atrix.
It might look ugly but a cable coming out of a lapdock which is connected to a phone is ugly itself. Why on earth would i let my phone dangle while i am using my lapdock say on the train, on my way to Uni? XD

I agree. I think the original LapDock looks better than this. Plus there is a place for the phone to connect, I don't really want a phone dangling off my laptop. I was hoping there would be some interest in porting the later WebTop environments to the Atrix but so far no one is interested and that is a shame because they use Maverick instead of Jaunty.

At least those with cases might have half a chance of using it.

The new way is the way it should have been designed in the first place with the USB dock at the bottom of the phone so that it would be easier to charge. What was Moto thinking when they designed the ports especially when you have a Otterbox case on your Atrix?

You know whats funny? Motorola says the Droid Bionic will work with the Lapdock 100. Yet Bionic was originally made for the FIRST lapdock.
This will most definitely work with our Atrix people. Its a dongle anyways so there is no reason why it wouldn't. Its all just a marketing scam

Car Dock?

Would really like to get a nice car dock/clip to use, hopefully one that allows the keyboard to be opened while it's in the dock, and be charging/3.5mm plugged in.
Satechi
Hey,
First post.
I just got the G2 and a Satachi SCR-31. The universal mount (plus a iPhone mount) works perfect with the G2. It has a clever button on the back that adjusts the width of the holder. Plus cushy sides.

Can you open and use the keyboard with that mount? It doesn't look like you can, but maybe that's just from the pictures I'm looking at.
It may be possible... I'll give it a try tomorrow. I worried that it will be precarious, but we shall see.
it works!
I tested it this afternoon and it works with the keyboard open or closed! I will add photos in the following post.

Nice toyota (scion?) but thanks for the pictures!
wow that's pretty neat. i wouldn't mind getting one.
My head unit has A2DP so I stream music to my car over bluetooth. I would also like to use the navigation feature of the G2 so I would like a car mount, and one with a car charger built in to it would be amazing so I could run the cable so it's not in the way and just leave it plugged in and set my phone down in it and it would charge automatically (I'm lazy, so sue me.)
I kind of doubt that anyone will make one of these for the G2 because those types of car mounts are kind of rare, so I was looking at ones that might be compatible. Motorola makes one for the Droid X that looks like it actually might work. Check out the size comparison:
http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/T-Mobile-G2-phone-size-compare-pc_4839.html (pick Droid X from the drop down)
and if you click on the side view and line up the phones, you can tell that the USB port is in pretty much exactly the same spot. The G2 is smaller, but wider. I don't think the extra width will be a problem since A. the mount has some extra room to accomidate a case, and B. the front lip is purely cosmetic and could easily be filed down.
It might be kind of ugly, only because the G2 is a little bit shorter than the Droid X.
As you see from this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaxqSDkcmP0
The Droid X mount has a removable sleeve so in my mind that pretty much guarentees that it will fit the G2. I'm thinking about buying one to see.
What do you guys think?
What about like this one being used for the Desire? The HTC Desire and the G2 have very similar specs...minus that pesky thickness!
G2- 4.69 in (119mm) x 2.38 in (60.4mm) x .56 in (14.1mm)
Desire- 4.69 in (119mm) x 2.36 in (60mm) x .47 in (11.9mm)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgtEDCWpLgY
I like that one too but is it clipped on to the air vent ... I want to say slits? Or is it clipped somewhere else?
Also, I think the tob clip would have to be filed somewhere cause the 3.5mm jack is almost in the middle of the device so the poses to be a problem.

Im not quite sure, honestly I hope its the air vent. My phone gets sooooo hot when in my car in GPS mode. Being near and in shot of the air vent would surely help, no?
Hmm, come to think of it, Im pretty sure that Desire I posted was in an Iphone 3GS car dock. You think the G2 would fit into Iphone 3GS ****? Id imagine no but like ive said, G2 very similar in size to Desire besides the extra heft in thickness.
It's worth a shot but someone has to guinea pig it for us. I would but I don't get paid till next week and that's a little long to wait for an answer.
I really wouldn't mind trying one of them out though. The droid x dock looks a tad bit more promising imho...
Sent from my HTC Vision
The desire dock in that video doesn't appear to have any charging capibilities, which I would like. I think I'm going to shell out the 35 for this droid x dock. Worst case, I just resell it

Wait bud, we have another thread opened about a bluetooth option for the car. Charging the device became a concern there as well but a few ideas came out.
Now these 2 threads can mingle, you should refer to it to see if there is a better alternative...

Well if you're concerned about having space to plug in an aux cord, then maybe the droid x car mount is right for you. There is going to be a bit of extra space at the top of the phone since the droid x is taller than the g2. Personally, I have a head unit with bluetooth and a2dp so I don't need an aux cable.

That couldn't work, the N1 charge port is on the bottom of the phone instead of the side, and I think it may be MiniUSB instead of Micro.. (not sure though)
My Droid X car dock will get here tomorrow, and I'm going on a little road trip this weekend right after I get off work so I'll probably post an update, and if the dock works I'll put up a youtube video of it too.

Yeah, that'd be great if you could. Also you would have to run this without a case right?
Not necessarily, the droid X dock has a removable insert to accomidate cases. You might have to do some slight modifications to get one to fit. I don't have a case to test it with but I'll definitely see if it looks like there will be extra room.

Does anyone have this dock..

laying around in house to see if it will work for our G2X?
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-ECR-D1B7BEGSTA-SGH-i997-Multimedia-microUSB/dp/B004WOBN3I
I know its not for the LG, but its a micro USB and has everything working for it including the size ( i think).
If we can not find a decent LG dock, then this one might be a good option... but dont know if it will work for our phones or not. So hoping someone has one laying around at home that they can try out and report back.
Looks like it works with the Infuse 4G. Compare sizes and see if it'll work.
Possibly. The Infuse 4G was huge:
http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_co...tion-vs-T-Mobile-G2x-vs-iPhone-4-vs-Infuse-4G
If there is a backplate, it should fit in there with room to spare. Might not be a good fit but it'd work. For $50 bucks though I'd think I'd want something tailored specifically to my device.
agreed... i rather get something for the phone.. but doesnt look like LG has any decent docks that does activate the dock features and all.....
from all I keep reading on the desk dock.. it doesnt really do much other then hold it in place.
I don't know, the dimensions given by Amazon are Product Dimensions: 4 x 3.5 x 4.5 inches which, after you consider the excess on the side, might be a snug fit. Although, given the specs I've found on the Infuse, either these dimensions are wrong or it's not for the Infuse, but more of a Samsung brand charger than a specific handset and, again, is labeled wrong by Amazon.
No matter what, the mini USB is in the correct location. And even if it's a little wider, it still looks better than anything offered by either LG or anyone else. If you try it or anyone else, post up. Cause I'm interested!
I will buy it and post a mini review for you guys, it looks like a perfect fit.

Any update on this? I too am looking for something JUST like this.
wow... nice dock.. and checking the sized.. the G2 is significantly smaller than the infuse.. this should actually work.. hazaaaaa. Did anyone buy this yet?
You can always return it to amazon with no issue if it doesn't work eh?
Why not one of these universal ones on ebay? Link to my search: http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=un...+cradle&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313
Particularly this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/UNIVERSAL-DESKT...689784?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item5d2ec60c78
They are soooo much cheaper and I would think reception to the cell tower (4G Internet) would be less likely to be interfered with if none of the rear surface area is covered. With my G2 I noticed that my connection speed and number of bars was a lot lower when I laid it flat on a table. When I either propped it up on the table, or held it flat with just my finger tips (basically leaving the back uncovered) the connection was fast and strong again.
I like this idea too because I can place it anywhere in the room for best reception and run an extension cable to it to keep it charged, while using the the 4G with wifi hotspot on my PC.
I wonder which is best as a homemade tripod. At those prices I could buy 1 of each and try them all.

Well, I just purchased it. Used the super saver shipping (5-8 [email protected] charge) so I guess we'll know in 5-8 days.
I'll post pics and final judgement as to whether or not it works...
I have the official LG desk and car docks. The desk is not fancy, but it hold the phone up, you just have to plug the power cable in if you're placing the phone in the horizontal orientation.
The car dock is great, solid, great fit. But I may remove the magnet that tells the phone to go into "car mode", since generally that's not helpful to me.

anyone pick this up yet?
I got it today... and it is sexy!!!
Now for the low down:
-Yes, the phone will connect in (w/o a cover on only)
-there is a gap though on either side, maybe a 1/4" at most
Even w/the gaps, I can still place it on it's side and the phone stays connected,
although, since it's being held up by the slim-usb connector, I can't see it being
good for the phone.
Now for the bummer (well, kinda) to get full functionality of the dock, you have to DL 'Samsung Home Dock' app from the store. Now, since it's free, you wouldn't think it was so bad, until you find out itlooks for the specific samsung fingerprint in the build.prop in order to install (to DL from market as well, I just took the apk file from xda.) So, now I need to find a build.prop that will sneak me through this little speed bump. Shouldn't be hard, just not enough time to search it out tonight.
Fortunately, the speakers on the G2x are so bad ass, even w/o the addt'l speaker built into the dock, it still kicks it out.
I'll get pics posted tomorrow after work.
Over all, considering our options, I think it's a winner!

Dock itself, sans phone[obviously]
rear view of dock. here you can see the built in speaker, speaker line out and the mini usb [power] connector.
A good [but very smudgy fingerprint-tastic] view of the phone in cradle.
This is a close up of the gap.
To be fair, as I've said in a previous post, I can set it on it's side while the phone is in and it doesn't sway at all due to how far in the usb connector fits. Still, I have to think it wouldn't be healthy to place it on it's side w/o some kind of cushion. I'm in the works of forming a silicone slide to custom fit it. Once I have time to do it right that is. I'll post pics after I'm done.
As far as getting the Samsung Desk Home to install, I still haven't figured out how to properly modify the build.prop to recognize it . I've got a post in the modding are of xda for assistance. The last thing I want to do is somehow brick my phone for a dock app [although I would LOOOOVE to be able to use that line out w/my google music beta as an alarm!] but no response yet.

Bluetooth keyboard

I was just thinking about all the old pda's i had used and remembered i still have a think outside slim bluetooth keyboard. Works fine except for the shift key. Since the screen on the atrix 2 is large this works perfect as a portable "lapdock". Bet they are cheap on ebay.?

Excellent. I was wondering if the Atrix 2 supported the Bluetooth Keyboard. I saw a folding bluetooth keyboard at Radio Shack the other day for like $80. That means I oughta be able to get one for under $20 somewhere... LOL
Wonder why the shift doesn't work. How odd.

Got me, it seems to be a driver issue. Looked on Ebay, I gave $30 for this one years ago, and people are wanting $160 for them. Man, out of touch with reality they are.
I saw a few online and some stated they only work with Android 3.0+. Anyone else seeing this? Also, wouldn't a Bluetooth keyboard made for the iPhone slash iPad work on our OS theoretically? I know that most other Bluetooth devices are multi-compatble so to speak. I'm looking to invest on one soon and I'm trying to do all my research. Very excited to run Ubuntu on this beast as mentioned in the development forums...

Mine says Think Outside on it but it's just like this one. I saw some go recently on Ebay for $20
Other than the caps not working quite right it works perfectly

I successfully use the Microsoft 6000 BT Keyboard with my phone. My shift key does work, along with all letter keys, number keys and all symbols. (at least they do in Evernote) I think it retails for about $50 if you want one with a number pad, or $35 if you don't need one. Also, it is a full size bluetooth keyboard, which was tough to find a year ago.

That does look like a nice keyboard... however I think people on this thread were looking for keyboards with mounts for their phone.
However one of the pictures on that keyboard includes a "Spiderpodium" to mount their phone.

Yeah, It's the only thing I wish were different, but I decided to sacrifice a mount for a full size keyboard. Big fingers don't really like small keyboards.
And the Spiderpodium's kinda interesting...

I was just thinking about all the old pda's i had used and remembered i still have a think outside slim bluetooth keyboard. Works fine except for the shift key. Since the screen on the atrix 2 is large this works perfect as a portable "lapdock". Bet they are cheap on ebay.?
typed with the think outside keyboard
Opps, worthless without a pic

hello, i new user of Atrix 2..today i bought multimedia kit full box for atrix 4g..overall function is very good excepted Bluetooth keyboard..can anybody suggest the solution?? im using supercharged V6 ROM..
Bought this Logitech bluetooth keyboard for ipad but works on our A2.. got it on discount for 30$ or Rs.1500. they say it has a 30ft range, but ive been having trouble going past about 15ft, though thats fine for now.
Im trying to get a setup with a HDMI supported LCD panel and also a mouse. Might get the Logitech v470 or MS Netbook 5000 which are compatible with the droid bionic so im guessing theyll work with our phone too..
Any suggestions for a 13" 15" lcd with hdmi support ?? Have just found TVs till now but no luck with LCD panels or even monitors, and TVs are somewhat out of my budget for now..
I was shopping around one of these, until i met the lapdock... you can get the whole bundle cheaper than a decent bluetooth keyboard. It also charges your phone.

[MOD/SOLDERING] Boot Kindle Fire HD 7" Into Fastboot with out Fastboot USB Cable

As I search for an alternate point to actually solder to this is the best I've got so far.
In order to completed this you must have a moderate amount of soldering experience and a damn steady hand.
EASY: First solder to the easy spot which is 3-4volts when unit is off.
Use a strand of copper from a speaker wire since the gauge is thin enough you should be able to attach it rather easily

HARD: Next what you want to do is hold the Kindle on an angle where you can access the power button and touch the other end of the copper wire to the following point. If the unit doesn't automatically turn on you may have to manually power it on carefully while touching the point.
HARDER: Solder to the point and run a switch in line for a fastboot/unbrick mod. Maybe later...
Great tut, however it seems there is much more work than to just make a fastboot cable.
sent fro my rooted kindle fire hd 7 with twerp and kinology rom installed
I didn't want to drop 9 bucks on eBay and after like 5 USB cable disassemblies I just said screw it and whooped out the iPod Pryer and multimeter

I have another demo unit. I'll check it out for you. But I'm pretty sure the RX TX pads shown in the picture below are what your looking for.. As for VCC you can use the 3-4v wire shown in picture 1 and ground obviously the black wire where the battery connects a few wires over from the red one.
Also I'm going to do a tutorial on how to flip a demo unit into a full blown unit/cm10 soon since that was what I was doing/did to this unit. I'll be using your files and another users files do you have any objections?

Its not fun until you break it open to see how it works and make it better hardware wise. I can easily doing an inductive charging mod to this. Actually going to very soon since I'm selling my Sero 7 and keeping this smaller tablet.

There used to be a person here who had the signature "if it ain't broke, fix it"
Seems fitting for the two mods

I'm a hardcore hardware modder. I love tearing stuff apart. If you look in my sig the inductive charger thats in the Sero 7 after it sells on ebay its coming out and going in the Kindle HD
why not just make a option in the roms?
It's easy enough to do from terminal, this is more of the oh crap I bricked it instance, I do agree, this mod is harsh, butttttt if you were wanting to crack it open anyway.....

This is mainly for modifying the demo units sold on eBay for 1/2 the cost of normal KFires. I got a demo unit off ebay for 80 shipped and flipped it for $150 fully modded with android. I then picked up another demo unit for 70 shipped and am using it for my wife. Never spent a dime on a fastboot cable which is needed for a demo flip.

err, why wouldn't you just unplug the battery?
30 awg kynar wirerap wire and copious application of kapton tape barriers is the way to bridge traces, imo.
I wonder if there's a place on the Vcc rail on the output side to pull power from. it'd be better because the current way is skipping the power filtering/protection circuits for the battery and dumping straight pack potential into sensitive chip leads.
also, i'm guessing TX/RX is the uart?
Has this been tested on a bricked model? or was it only used on demo units?
Would like to know, since I bricked my KFHD7 and am currently waiting on a Fastboot cable that wont be here till, the 27th.
Just want to make sure before I crack mine open, will report if it hasn't already been reported to work on a bricked unit

If you have the means to do this mod and have a spare cable. I'd go with modding a cable and recommend heat-shrink over tape(improper taping is poor strain relief). He did this mod because you can't exchange a demo unit and problems making a cable.

Physical keyboard for galaxy note 4

I always enjoyed typing on a hardware keyboard. Unfortunately phones with physical keyboards are no longer produced (except blackberry).
The phone i used until now was nokia n900, but its battery died, so i decided to move on. I wanted a device like htc tytn 2 or htc touch pro 2 but with today specifications. I found none.
So i got a samsung galaxy note 4 and decided to add a hardware keyboard to it. I know that for galaxy s4 there are some bluetooth keyboard cases, but they does not allow full control of the interface. I wanted something with a mousepad.
For that i found the Rii mini bluetooth keyboard. It is about the same size as the note 4.
With two ringke slim cases, i build a slide mechanism that can also tilt:

nice mod!
I haven't seen a psion in forever!
Did you consider those similar keyboards that connect via bluetooth or is the USB host for something else?
The usb host is for connecting any usb device. I make a small host adapter which i keep in a free space in the keyboard case:
nice one. where did you buy the keyboard from, in Romania?
i bought it from olx.ro, but i also found on robofun.ro
I have a very similar keyboard. How would I go about connecting the keyboard with the phone? I am not trying to make a slider phone, but just want to use the keyboard wirelessly with the phone. Thanks.
That is freaking awesome. I have that same little keyboard, I may have to set aside some time to make one of these for myself.

well, there are several model of this keyboard available. some of them are using wifi, some bluetooth. If your keyboard is using bluetooth, simple activate bluetooth on the phone, turn on the keyboard, on the phone search for bluetooth devices, you should find the keyboard, select it, it may ask you to introduce a code, insert it, and you are done.
If your keyboard is using wifi, you'll need to use a usb host adapter to plug the wifi adapter that came with the keyboard to the phone usb. I didn't use such a keyboard before, so not sure what you have to do after that.

if you have access to a 3d printer, you can make it look alot better, however the slide mechanism should be made from metal, becase the note 4 is not very light.
I would really like to see something similar, so if you can find some time to do it, please post the pictures
Maybe you have better ideas about the slide and tilt mechanism.
Best regards,
Liviu

My keyboard has an usb dongle I have to plug in somewhere. I wasn't sure how it connected until much later after looking at your pics much more closely. I ordered an otg cable, hopefully it works out. Thanks man, and that is a sick mod.

I wouldn't have the first clue where to find a 3D printer, unfortunately. That's a good idea though.
I have a couple of cases that would work well for this and I think they'd look nice with a leather covering, so we'll see what I can come up with. I'll definitely post pics when/if I do this

I have to see what I can rummage up for the mechanism, I may have to make a trip to Fry's or something. I'll probably keep it similar to your design cause I like the slide & tilt thing. I'm out of state visiting my mom all week so I have lots of time to brainstorm :good:

Sounds great! I have some ideas that can remove those bulges from the first case:
The idea is to use some screws to fix the case to slide and cut the metal bends that holds the first case:
Flipping those two small holders will give you a space in the middle for the screws, allowing you to slide easily:
I'm not sure if i have time this weekend to do this on my case, but you can try it out.
if someone makes this for me I swear I'll buy it or if someone could give me a link to some official ones I would love you forever lol. I need this in my life

I'm afraid you won't find this anywhere to buy, you'll have to build it yourself.
yeah unfortunately I realized that after looking online for like 3 days straight lmao. literally impossible to find. I don't know why this isn't a thing I think it's absolutely amazing. brings me back to the G1 and Moto XT & all that.
I've searched all over for Note 4 keyboard cases and didn't find any like with my old S3, sadly, but then you went and made one! Looks nice!
I just wish that keyboard had backlighting, since I use my phone in dark rooms fairly often. But since it's a DIY effort anyway, I might as well base it off one of those old S3 cases that did have the backlighting and the classic HTC slide action with tilt.
