Version of Radio vs Battery Life - HTC Desire S

Hello all I am curious is there a relation between the radio version and the battery consumption. I have noticed greater drain while using WiFi with the latest Radio (20.48.30.0822U_3822.09.08.20_M). Please welcome to join to the poll above

Yes there is one I think, there are many factors that can bring bigger battery consumption, like signal drops, scan cycles...

When you say battery issue, do you mean the existing problem that I've encountered and previously created threads about which occurred with many of the earlier radio's where the battery consumption would go from 5A-8mA (sleep - wi-fi connected) up to 30 (for no apparent reason - that I ever managed to detect anyway!) and then stayed at that level of usage until you bounced (stopped/started) the wi-fi or rebooted the device.
I've not encountered this on either the of the last two leaked (the last being 08.00.24) or the most recent OTA radio which I'm now on 09.08.20.

I am not using a Sense ROM. RIL is not needed on CyanogenMod or other AOSP based projects.

Ahh...ok, so you learn something new every day!

Sry, but as much as I know (could also be wrong) ril is also used within cyanogen, but an custom generic one.
Could it be that you haven't deleted it from the pg88img? Sry, that I didn't think about it before!

OK Then this can't be the problem.

So not much info to gather here...
At least the majority of the voted are using the latest Radio from OTA without complaints.
I made some additional reading and found out that radio.img is a partition table (!) + several partition images. This explains somewhat the messed /cache.
Anyway I have flashed the latest Radio again. During the process I have "fried my eMMC" again of course and solved it with solution 2 from the guide in my signature.

For 2.3.4 (7.1.0 RC) and still Beta.
Friendly reminder that if you are using your own choice of radio / RIL that you will need to reflash the RIL zip.

Put the file on your SD Card and do it the same way how do you installed 7.0.2. Use CWM and select your file (Install .zip from SD-Card). Just install it without wiping or deleting anything. But do a nandroid before (CWM Backup)!
Hi, since there seem´s to be some issue´s with 7.0.3 (read on CyanogenMod.com/blog) can´t you release an update patch for only the security fix and the bug fix for the update notification system??
I´m on 7.0.0 and I´ve tried 7.0.2 & and it´s not working any good for me, so updating to 7.0.3 seem´s like a shot in the foot
Thanxs for any input..
Well i wonder where you guys get your RIL's from, i just can find RIL's that are only for Sense Roms based on Gingerbread.
@peste
Would you mind sharing your RIL you are actually using, cause im also from Germany and i would like to give your Radio a try.

I thing you missunderstand it ... 7.0.3 is without this notification bugs. Read the blog again.
An Another Question ...
At the moment i use 7.0.2 and this Radio: 12.54.60.25P_26.09.04.11_M2
I dont flash a RIL ... when i update to 7.0.3, can i flash a ril that is compatible with my Radio 12.54.60.25P_26.09.04.11_M2? Or just flash 7.0.3 without a ril?
After the 7.0.2 release there was a Patch "use 2.2 htc ril" ... is this includet in 7.0.3? Or is it just in the nightlys that based on 2.3.4?
Regards

RIL's are not compulsory but are helpful to get the best results by matching the Radio. You can therefore flash CM7.0.3 but since CM7 will change the RIL to match the recommended radio you should then flash the correct RIL to match the Radio you are looking for which for 26.09.04.11 on CM7 ROM is 2.2.1003G.
There is a link to this RIL in my sig.

back to topic:
I have no problems with CM 7.0.3 so far, had a few issues like connecting my Device via USB with my computer made it reboot several times but after unchecking and checking USB Debugging again it is gone. Im also using Lord Clockan's Kernel v.3.1 to avoid the the Wifi-Error Bug. It feels not that snappy like it did with the newer Kernel on 7.0.0, but i will give it some time. SetCPU is installed, running onDemand min.230 max. 1228 and Screenoff Profile using Smartass with min. 122 and max 537. I also have no Issues with Video Playback like some people stated on the blog.
Let's see how it will be doing withing the next days

I don´t use this RIL anymore, now using the standard CM7 RIL again. Got only connection problems (call drops, signal loss) all 3 minutes. With standard RIL all seems to be good. On o2 Germany.
i think 7.0.3 is buttery smooth..and has improved lot of issues from the last rom.

[Q] Revolution HD recommended radio

I flashed the recommended radio 10.58.9035.00U_10.15.9035.02_2 a few days back and my question is my phone still says .00P instead of .00U. Any ideas as to why or what affect that has?

Hi,
It makes no difference, and there is no adverse affect.
I just flashed my Sensation with Revolution HD also and I'm curious about the Radio update.
It says 'recommended' but what exactly is different about this radio vs the stock one? I've read here and there that flashing the radio can be pretty dicey and is a large casue of bricked devices.
My phone seems to be operating fine now without the flash. I don't mind flashing it but I'd like to understand the differences first.

Hi,
To quote mike:
He strongly recommends the radio because
--- Using a "non matched" radio could have a negative effect on performance, battery life & signal strength ------ You don't have to flash RIL files for recommended radio. It's already in the ROM ------ You would need S-OFF in order to do it properly
So, the radios are optimized for his roms.

It has no effect, they are exactly the same radio flashed.
The U vs P is a tag to determine which market the phone is for.
for example in Europe you'll generally have "U" here in the US on TMO we generally have "P".

Let me see if I can provide an easy explanation:
In the past there were often radio's specifically tweaked for the market they were releasing into for example a "Europe" and "US" radio.
The radio numbers are simply revision numbers in the evolution of the overall radio.
The more current radios are optimized and the preferred build for most of the newer ROMs because the Radio/IRL is optimized for the 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 sensation builds.
The current radios may not be overly different in their individual changelogs but they are different in how the matching Radio/IRL interacts with the ROM in regards to call quality, power consumption and of course the Kernel. This is why a chef will recommend a radio with a ROM.
I've used various radios on the TMoUS Sensation and the most recent radio is by far the best performer in regards to call quality and power IMO. You've certainly got nothing to lose by upgrading and might gain the extras enabled by the more current ROMs mostly in the way of optimized performance.

The flashing process itself causes more issues than the radios. The best way is to ADB Fastboot flash radio radio.img.
In the past when radio's were matched to geo markets or specific rom builds this was more of an issue. If you follow the guidelines it's actually really easy. Just be sure you S-off before you try anything.

WiFi and mobile Internet problems

I've only used CM10 based roms but these are the problems I'm having.
- When my phone goes to deep sleep, my WiFi disconnects. Well, it doesn't really disconnect because when I unlock the phone, I see the wifi signal but it's in grey instead of blue. I don't get my notifications while it's in deep sleep.
- Also, when I switch to data (mobile internet), it doesn't work until I switch from 3G to 2G or vice versa.
Does anybody else have these problems? What can be done? Thank you.
Info: I'm on the latest available EU radio (I live in Belgium) and hboot 1.06. Rom: Jelly Bam.

Where can I find these Extra Partitions? Also, I'm guessing I'm already on a JB radio because it's the latest one. 1.11 EU.

I already flashed the EU 1.11 radio from the first link so I should be good as far as the radio is concerned. Are you sure the second link (the one for the extra partitions) works on Jelly Bam (CM10)?
OP says it's Sense only on the first page in the comment section.

Ok thats just wrong. AOSP will only use the radio in the rom. so if ur on Jellybam just flash the AOSP radio. Thats it
If you are on a sense JellyBean 4+ rom then u can flash the Sense Radio and Wifi partitions.
Its one or the other. Not both.
The AOSP radio is which one? I always flashed the latest available one in the CM10 Aroma Installer.

Roms that work with T-Mobile htc one s

I started this to see if anyone can list a few ROMs that work with T-Mobiles htc one s. Please help by listing the ROM you are on and by saying if the ROM has any issues; such as WiFi not working for example.

Cm10 nightly- works excellent but it takes WiFi about 5 mins to kick in after I toggle it. If any one knows how to fix it please reply to this post

I've been using $droyd$'s AOKP 4.2.2 ROM and the only issue is that as of right now, you can't record in 1080p. Other than that, its very smooth and fast.
Also if you were unaware before, wifi-calling doesn't work on any jelly bean rom.
Good luck!

WIFI issues are a nuance of this phone and the tmobile seems to be the most affected - it's different for each access point, user, phone, rom and firmware. In short you'll have to try it.
My tmobile worked with wifi on CM10 and CM10.1, it would not work with Viper until I downgraded my hboot (partial s-off enables some firmware write access) and flashed my wifi firmware. It get's interesting - I then put the old firmware back and the wifi still worked!!
Did you see the S-OFF thread? This will enable you to flash the radio firmware which will solve any problems.
Remember your WIFI channels - different countries use different range of channels and some access points 'helpfull' set the channel automaticlly. I have many devices that cannot cope with channel12.
Not trying to be a buzz kill here, but what's the purpose of this thread? I mean the Dev section is right over there, and the first page is flowing with fully working or close to fully working new ROMS.
Just saying.
I see what your saying. But honestly when you go through the a certain ROMs thread, they never say how WiFi doesn't work on T-Mobile phones. Or any of the problems Tmobiles users face. And who wants to go through a thread having to look for that one specific detail about a ROM whether or not to see if WiFi works. Also when looking through these ROM threads you find people that just like to say thank you (which there is nothing wrong with) that fill up the pages, making it harder to know if everything in that ROM is really going to work on your tmobile HTC one s, because people do search through comments to see what the users say. Therefore I made this thread for all T-Mobile users who want to post and say whether their ROM they are using works perfectly or if they are experiencing problems. And who wants to go through the process of flashing a new ROM without even knowing whether something like WiFi works. So yeah that's why i made this thread
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
I get that, ROM posts can be a little all over the place sometimes. I didn't understand at first; I'm one of the few T-Mo users with pretty much no problems. It also doesn't help that the ROM database that some guy did in the Dev section hasn't been updated for some time.
Thankyou

If you are S-ON and have high HBOOT and want a Sense-based ROM with working WiFi, you were looking at TrickDroid 7 (TMOUS based), Unknown Retribution, and I think one more (Energy Blue, IIRC) that were based on recent updates. Since they were all based on the TMOUS ROM, everything should work without doing anything super special, including WiFi-calling. Virtuous Ville+ also had working WiFi, but no WiFi-calling. Recent CM 10.1 nightlies are working really well. At least, those are the ROMs I've used.

I haven't had any WiFi hangs.
I just started using Liquid Smooth. Pretty nice IMO. The only issues I've notcied were a bluetooth hang that fixed after a reboot, and Voice search keeps crashing.

Right now I'm on Viper 2.1.0 with the full firmware from the 3.16 WWE OTA -- I only made that jump because S-OFF makes it easy to switch without having to downgrade HBOOT. So HBOOT is 2.15 and Radio is 1.11.50.05.28. But I've just started using that and can't give you much in the way of impressions on WiFi stability yet. Just flashed it last night and didn't have any WiFi problems downloading my apps last night or weather checks this morning.
Before that I was using a recent CM 10.1 nightly on the TMOUS 2.35.531.10 firmware. So HBOOT 1.14 and 1.11t. I ran that firmware combination from shortly after its release until flashing Viper. ROMs in use were either CM 10.1 nightlies or Unknown Retribution (TMOUS 2.35 based).

noob question- What do you mean by TMOUS 2.35 based. And how does that affect the cm10.1 nightly
I mean ROMs that were built using T-Mobile US's 2.35 ROM as a base. Other Sense-based ROMs, like Viper, start with different ROMs as a base. The different Sense bases are part of the reason people run into WiFi problems when using ROMs originally created for other regions.
CM 10.1 has an entirely different heritage so it has its own ways of dealing with those issues.

Ok thank you. Now i think im going to go Flash that rom. And also did you do anything specific to get your wifi working. and what Hboot are you on

I'm on hboot 1.09 and the wi-fi worked right from the start.
p.s. sorry for the slow reply
Gotta Tell you the Viper 2.1.0 rocks...its fast awesome battery life and its got working wifi...not wifi calling but just wifi in general...it honestly is the best sense ROM...I have tried CM 10, Virtuous Ville+, P.A.C Man and even the ICS ROMs and I gotta say the Venom team makes an awesome product...
"[rom][S4][15FEB]Updated_4.2.2_AOKP-Working-video" seems to work great with TMOUS hboot 1.14, added the new camera (in the post) with photosphere, The only little bug I found is the bluetooth doesn't list station info on my car stereo. I saw a tearing fix using bubba kernel, but I'm just living with it for now. Everything else seems to work great!
I just flashed the LiquidSmooth JB ROM from Droyd and this thing is amazing.. Coming from a rooted Stock Sense there really is no comparison, I might give Viper a try but this is clearly gonna be my daily driver

[Q] Do I need to update my radio?

How does one determine which radio should be used?
I haven't flashed radios back since it was mandatory with the Android Revolution ROM. I'm using CM10 now, and am going to be flashing Albinoman's CM10.1 soon here. Admittedly this is a bit greek to me, and I'd hate to break my phone flashing the wrong radio.
T-MOUS
HBOOT-1.27.1100 [Revolutionary]
Radio-11.76A.3504.00P_11.24A.3504.31_M
Firmware: (Unknown - not shown in "About Phone," believe I'm on 3.32) - Will be flashing 3.33 from this thread.
There is a thread with a bunch of radios in it, but I'm not sure if any of those are carrier dependent, or based on other things.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
You should try to install albino's ROM without changing anything,to begin with.
It may work well straight out of the box.
Only start changing radios and firmware if you have signal problems.
Firmware 3.33 and 3.32 Are virtually identical, and I think the radios are in fact the same.
What about the RILs? I never understood that part..

Hi,
Rils work with the radio to give you good signal for your area.
Rils are included in the ROM.
You can also go to the market and get an app called "GetRil"
This will check your radio/ril combination, and ensure you have the best match.

Thanks, mate!

So I used this app with Albinoman's Rom, and it came up "Unknown RIL" - won't give me any options beyond that. All I was allowed to do was send a report.

Hi,
It has been a while since I used albino's ROM.
People did report that Getril did not work too well with 4.2.2 ROMS.
I guess that has not changed.
On the up-side,the ril that was incorporated in albino's ROMS worked well for most people.
Are you having any signal problems?

Unfortunately yes, my signal is constantly fluctuating from 3 bars to no bars every 30 or so seconds. Can't receive calls unless I have three or more bars. Missing 90% of calls, unable to make outgoing calls at all.
Made the build.prop change for T-MOUS recommended in Albinoman's build - no improvement.

Hi,
The first question you asked was :
" How does one determine which radio should be used?"
The best radio is the one that works for you.
Was your signal good with your previous ROM?
The radio you have is 11.24
There is a later version HERE which is 11.29
If you had a good signal before, then it could just be the ril that you had in the previous ROM.
It may be possible to get that ril and use it on albino's ROM.
You could also ask about rils in the radio/ril thread.
Of course, you must be s-off to change any firmware or radio.
Flashed the latest radio, now I can't make or receive any phone calls whatsoever. Phone displays 2 bars, but as soon as I try to make a call, goes to zero.
Apparently if my Wi-Fi is on, it kills my Mobile Signal. Keeping Wi-Fi off is allowing me to make calls, for the moment.

The safest way is to get an app called GetRil from play store and check if your radio and ril are matched properly.
Try this first and then change your radio if it still isn't working.
You can get radios from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202867
You need to try radio/ril combinations till you get it right.
A lot of people have radio problems with albomanion Rom
You can also see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348361. It is not exactly for your Rom, but it might help
Happy to help.
