Ok, I know the official build isnt out yet, but I do know there are a slew of ROMs floating around, some of them on XDA. Any suggestions as to which one to go with? Any pros/cons of doing this? Just trying to find out, cause I saw the post on Engadget that linked to a closed thread here about the Froyo leak, and whatnot, so what ROM should I go with, or just wait a little for the official one to come out? And what abut Gingerbread? Should I even bother with Froyo?
Sorry, just got a lot of questions now that I've got my Captivate
Thanks guys
The official build is out for Bell Canada, I would try to get a ROM based on that.
Definitely a custom rom. The leak is really buggy
i agree with wvumaniac79. been running the leaked froyo and been troubleshooting it on a nearly daily basis (thank god for this forum!). some things i havent been able to solve and just lived with (still nervous about flashing, etc). but my patience is wearing thin to the point it'll overthrow my nervousness of re-flashing a new rom.
do a custom rom and you'll be happy.
Thanks for the info guys.
@vieve - I dont think you can flash a ROM for Canadian phones on an American phone can you? I know I couldnt with my old HTC TP2.
Anyone got any suggestions as to what Rom to use? Afaik, isnt Cognition the most popular one right now? Any bad things with flashing?
If I'm not mistaken the new perception rom is based off a build from Canada. Its made by design gears the same that does cognition. The newest cognition is awesome that's what I'm running on right now. Just test the waters and if you get stuck the forum is here for support.

Ok so perception and cognition are by same dev teams, so either one is a good one to do? Im assuming because theyre names are different that there are some differences between them? I was looking at cognition but ill give the other a look. Thanks

The cognition b4 was perfect for me. I didn't have any problems.
My personal favorite is the aosp cm6 spices rom, gives the look and feel of stock android. But cognition is good too
Alrighty, well Im gonna try Cognition real quick, and see how it runs... if all else fails, or something goes wrong with the phone, i can always flash back to stock eclair right?
Correct. I have though I bricked my phone a few times, but I always figure it out. This is my last ditch effort that always works for me every time If I think i bricked my phone.
Download Odin 1 click. Install samsung drivers, if you haven't already. Take the battery, sim card, and sd card out of your phone. Start Odin 1 click on your computer. plug the usb cable into the computer, but not the phone. Put the battery back into the phone. Hold the volume up and down buttons in. While holding those buttons, plug the usb cable into your phone. Your phone should turn on in download mode and be recognized by odin without even touching the power button on your phone. Then you can restore.
You probably won't need that advice, but if something goes wrong, I though I would save you a mini-panick.
The newest cognition 2.3b1-6 is running on captivate builds. Cog 2.4 is based off a vibrant build. Perception is based off i9000 builds. 2.4 was buggy for some but worked great for others. Perception is practically brand new only been around for a couple of days and doesn't quite work flawlessly YET. Hope this helps.

I agree. The most stable cog I used was 2.3b4. I never used b5 or 5.5. b4 was rock solid. b6 is faster, but has issues.
I got Cog b6 (latest one atm) running right now, and it seems to be running just fine.. I think my only issue is battery calibration, which Im in the process of fixing right now..
have to say, i like froyo a lot better then eclair, and not having touchwiz is soooooooo nice
currently running cogb6 and everything has been flawless so far. surprisingly, I haven't run into a single problem yet. also, flashing it w/ rom manager was dead easy
Yeah, i was pretty amazed at how easy it was and even more amazed at how much better it runs than the stock rom. About the only issue i have is the random shut off issue, which seems to be hardware related since it happened on stock eclair and on cogb6. A quick power on, restart and it works fine.
I really like cog. Runs great. Two complaints i have though. The musix player app that comes with stock eclair has a pull down control on the lock screen while the one in cog doesnt, even though they look like the same app. That and using the music shortcut in the Car Home app doesnt work (im guessing that the stock music app isnt installed?). Two minor grumbles, but something i can live with. Have to say its really really really really really nice to have gotten rid of touchshiz and atts bloatware. Touchwiz looks nice and all but damn, i love the stock android launcher and lock screen. That stupid swipe to unlock screen was killing me.
Ah well, im ranting. Regardless, this rom is great. Thanks for the input guys. Its greatly appreciated.
And yes, i did just type all this from my phone. :-D

Cog 2.3b6 is good...
Perception build 4 is good... fast has a better modem for it...
both done by DG both good... best thing todo is flash till you find one you like and fits what you want it to do.. other than that have fun with whatever rom you choose and enjoy it

I believe the reason that pulldown CD on the lockscreen for the music player doesn't work bc its part of touchwiz. No touchwiz no nifty CD animation. As far as car home goes I'm not sure.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
U can get the pull down CD on cognition 2.3b6 along with the puzzle piece notifications. They aren't in there now because the dev went back to the stock aosp lock screen instead of the touchwiz (aka "glass") lock screen. You just have to replace the android.policy.jar file in /system/framework/ with root explorer or some other method. U can get the file from an older cognition rom that had it or the stock rom.
Axura is a blazing fast totally tricked out rom. Ran cog and perception and both good but try Axura and you'll see what I mean.

So I have been rooting my phones for a long time, flashing dozens of roms, kernels, etc, but never tried CM7..I have done some research but still not totally sure on whether to try it or not, I figured I could run both CM7 and theory through backups and just flash one or the other on different days...CM7 seems to be the most popular download...should I give it a try? Can I run LPP on it?
Been running CM on my original Droid since it was available and now running it on my Tbolt so I may be biased but YES you should give it a try. Only you can decide what ROM works best for you. CM is highly customizable with not a lot of "eye candy" out of the box. It works and works well for me.
Flash it, you won't be disappointed. LPP works.

LP+ works better than ADW Launcher on CM7, and CM7 COMES WITH ADW Launcher.
I haven't tried theory, so I can't compare, but I've been running cm7 for a couple weeks and have been very happy with it.
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA Premium App
I've also been using CM since my OG Droid so I have a bias as well. I've tested the bamf roms too. CM does not have all the glitz and glamor but its super functional and fast. Its not without some bugs but nothing that would make you not not want to try it out. The last update kicks ass. In my personal experience don't use the purging of assets option. I'm also going to test out the latest MR2 radio as I'm am currently running the previously leaked 2.5.

I just recently took the cm7 plunge after running almost every sense rom out there. I will not be returning to sense. Cm7 is the smoothest I've tried and the ability to switch themes every other day keeps the flash junkie in me happy as well. Give it a shot man. I think you'll be pleased.

Ive also had CM7 since my OG but actually my OG didn't really like CM some phones just don't like certain roms. Just flash it, its probably the most stable and you will get the best battery life out of any rom available for the Tbolt
I'm running CM7 w/the new OTA 2 radio.
Just make sure you d/l the correct version of CM7 for whichever radio you are using.
I haven't had any issues w/GPS - the only problem I have is w/my beautiful weather widget not even coming close to telling me where I am, lol. Weather bug (free) is working though, when I refresh it finds me.
I came off of Bamf stripped 1.8 w/the original radio and did things in this order:
Wiped data & dalvik 3x each.
Flashed the ROM (did NOT reboot)
Flashed the GApps (then I rebooted - of course had no service but I wanted to make sure the ROM was working)
then I flashed the 2.5 radio AFTER the ROM.
That radio worked fine for me, but I wanted the OTA version so I did that a couple days later.
I DID NOT use ROM manager, I did it all via recovery/boot menu.
I will be the first to admit that the idea of flashing roms was ridiculous and not my thing, but I have to love it. I don't necessarily need to experiment with different kinds, but I like having options. And of course it is very clear that the G2X is a bust for tmo, so I don't expect too much from them.
Thaynjs to all the devs that work hard to keep us happy.
Im done. No more posts from me...
LOL I'm a crack flasha too. I didn't think this phone was THAT big a failure for T-Mobile though.

thats the one thing i miss about htc phones is the fact that i can switch between sense roms then try aosp for a while
I never wanted to try a sense rom. The Widgets are pretty but it reminds me of my Windows Mobile days... even then I built roms without sense.
Once you try MIUI, sense is a laugh.
I think I've converted over to MIUI full time. Updates aren't as frequent to cut back on my daily urge and all the little tweaks really make the phone a joy to use. CM7 is great too but MIUI is like a polished CM7.
Nightlies are fun for a while but with the G2x, there is rampant APN and GPS issues that rear up occasionally that have bitten me several times. Nothing like being in a strange city with barely any service and your GPS is boinked.
I'll probably flip back and forth once they settle down with the GB source but reading the nightly thread it seems there are some big problems in the past few releases that I'm in no hurry to rush into.
I think I'm enjoying MIUI too much.

Nothing new for the g2x in the new build
I've been rocking the nightly's since 55 and haven't had any trouble with any of them. GPS and both cameras have worked for me the whole time. Got 124 earlier today.
I third the MIUI is an iPhone rom...if you like it you'll probably love an iPhone...haha
CM7 has it on lock. I have bluez IME and can connect a wiimote to my phone and map all the wiimote keys to do any ascii I want. From there I can play pretty much any emulator with the wiimote and hdmi out to a projector or tv.
I have netflix it runs fast as hell and the battery lasts 3-4 days if I'm only using it for phone calls. Lasts about 6 hours if I'm gaming or watching movies.
Only complaint is they didn't steal the HDMI settings from the stock rom yet, so it will only auto out hdmi to 1080p tv's. So if you only have a 720p tv, probably not for you, but the perks might still make it worth it.
Oh yah, and if your worried about your settings. Don't wipe anything when you update your nightly. Download however you do, if you use rom manager, just say no when it asks to install, then shut down, load your recovery, flash the new nightly right over your old one. All setting remain the same. (Keep a good nandroid backup at all times and every once in a while restore your backup and flash new nightly over that for good measure)
Just install a custom launcher. I can't stand the iPhone style either so I run adw launcher.
Miui is the most customizable room out there by FAR.

Which one do you think is the best? Why?
Adv vs. Disadv analysis is encouraged.
Btw, I am not jboxer. There was a little bit of a name mixup
I've only tried weapon. I have had no desire whatsoever to try anything else. Weapon works! i get 24 hrs. of medium usage or 48 light usage per charge. it's fairly customizable, has many themes for it. bluetooth, hulu, netflix all work. i'm sure the others are great, but i'll stick to weapon. thanks Whitehawkx!
I have used EaglesBlood and CyanogenMod Nightly's. I have noticed no real differences between the two as EaglesBlood is based on CyanogenMod.
Weapon is based on stock, so it will be customizable but retain more of the stock functionality and won't be as widely customizable right off the bat like CM7 and EB. Weapon is also based on 2.3.3 vs 2.3.7. MIUI is also based more on stock but has a redesigned UI that looks a little more like iOS. MIUI is also more compatible with the Asian market and it's phone technology. They all have their downsides, mostly in that some piece of hardware isn't working at full ability. But that is just one of the things about custom ROMs.
In the end it is all up to you in what you want for your daily use. I suggest just trying each one out until you find the one that suites you best and stick with it.
Eagle ftw!!!

I've used EB and weapon, and personally i preferred weapon over EB. i haven't used MIUI and CM7 seems so unstable.
Started with weapon which was great. Tried miui but really to me its an ios knock off gone wrong.
EB is good but I had memory issues with it.
So since as of Oct 25th I have been using CM7 nightlies. They are pretty stable. I don't have any issues. CM is where most developers get their stuff from or they get stock.
With CM you have the latest version of Android. When ICS comes out I am sure CM will have the first stable one
However you do need to try and test urself what is good. Clockwork and Titanium are must have when using custom Roms.

MIUI FTW
I've been using CM7.1. I first scooped it up when I saw the Cyanogen guys drop it in the dev section and have been using it ever since. Battery life is great, GPS is relatively quick on my device and its very customizable, obviously. Only downside for me is sometimes when I'm charging it the phone will become unresponsive and basically give me a blank screen, have to batt pull. I have recently wipe batt stats and haven't had that problem.
I haven't tried weapon yet, but I like most of the stock based roms because of the LG cam and hardware compatibility. I may flash weapon when I get bored though just to mess around with it.
MIUI was one of the first ROMs I flashed because I came from an Optimus S and always wanted to run it. It was a great ROM; batt life was good, really snappy, very customizable again and it looked soooo good. In the end however the hardware compatibility issues caused me to look elsewhere. Was getting random FCs, GPS wasn't quick enough for me, overall not stable enough for myself to run as a daily.
No experience with EB here, but right now CM7 is my favorite ROM. It has a good balance of look, features, compatibility and performance. IMHO of course.
I've used EB, CM7 stable, and Weapon. I haven't used MIUI for the G2X but have run it on other phones in the past. MIUI is interesting to use as something different but the novelty wore off for me after awhile.
Right now I am sticking with Weapon as it provides the most stability and functionality IMO. For example, I couldn't stream Bluetooth audio in my car with CM7 and GPS locking was a nightmare. I also find it gives me the best battery life but that is highly subjective...
Anyhow, with ICS source code being released today I think there will be some serious beta ROMs coming my way soon.
Flash everything and see what you like best. Just remember to Nandroid along the way!
Faux rom all the way.

I think I've used every rom made for the G2x and flip between them often.
Weapon just works but that's boring. I would use it if whitehaux included T-Mobile theme support (aka CM7 themes). The addition to the notification toggles helps lower the burden of use also.
I haven't tried EB in a while but it doesn't get updated much. It runs off a CM7 base... so I figure why not just use CM7?
MIUI does have a novelty that looks like it would get old but if you use a 3rd party launcher and play with the themes, you might find yourself getting addicted to the various array of different apps and functionality. The dialer, messaging, and music apps are glorious. You will however find that compatibility is the lowest and some FC more times then normal. For me it was completely useable. Development for MIUI is being ramped up and I would really like to have a really good stave version one day.
CM7 is what it is. It is the fullest and most worked on rom available on any phone. It doesn't have as many bells and whistles as MIUI but overall is a good balance between MIUI and Weapon. It is currently what I use.
What I like to do is view the "Post your homescreen" threads for both CM7 and MIUI. Find something that you really like and go for it. Android is all about custom appearances and style. Embrace it.
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV
I've tried them all
CM7 Nightlies - Seemed very unstable to me
EB - Just didn't feel it. I wanted to retain the look of stock. (First ROM I used, switched to CM7 Nightlies about 2 days later)
Weapon - Perfect for me since it looks just like stock and has more. (Currently using)
MIUI - Too much like iOS. Why did I get an Android? Because I liked the look of it... Didn't really like not having an app drawer (plus I liked the cube affect in app drawer) I reflashed Weapon about 5 minutes after flashing MIUI.
I've been using Weapon 3 RC1 and switched around to MIUI and CM7 then back to Weapon. I found the user interface of MIUI confusing and CM7 I can't say much about cause I used it so little. Weapon is straight-forward to use and very stable. I will continue to try various ROMs and kernels because I like to experiment and discover what's developing that may be better than what I'm currently using. For now, its Weapon.

NO MORE ANNOYING BROWSER SLINGSHOT EFFECT!! this urked me to no end with other gingerbread roms. I can finally scroll without having to think about it lol.
miui all day baby!!!
Weapon since 2.6. Everything works. Period.
MIUI does feel weird at first but load up a custom launcher and you'll be right at home with Android-like feelings. Once you stop using the default launcher, it starts becoming this amazing experience. The launcher is the only resemblence to iOS (restrictive), everything else is unique.
Once you use MIUI or CM7 for a while, its hard to go back to Stock-like roms. The pros outweigh the cons. I didn't see the purpose of CM7 at first either. It's only until you discover the hidden gems that make it alternative roms simply amazing.
For Example: CM7 and MIUI allow UserAgent changes on the fly to flip between Desktop, Mobile, iPad, Android, Chrome, etc. I personally like the fully rendered pages so I set it to a desktop renderer so I'm not pulling up the crappy mobile sites all the time.

Still i haven't installed it but I read that CyanogenMod 7 works flawlessly on the Infuse. I read you can use it to connect usb devices to your phone so i guess it can do pretty anything, tethering included.
The only thing that seems to work crappy is audio through bluetooth but i bet it's not a big problem : bluetooth is one of the most stupid and unsecure tecnologies ever invented.

Don't install a Samsung based rom, which is everything but CM7 or MIUI. Both CM7 and MIUI are AOSP based. MIUI is too much like iOS for my liking. I have been running CM7 on my infuse since I got it, and before that on my inspire, and before that on my captivate. CM7 is the only way to go.
For what it's worth, I'm running CM7, the newest nightly on 1/19. Very stable (some apps I had while running stock Froyo or Infused 2.2.3? would force close alot, not on CM7, but it's a very selective few apps I use for work), very smooth, very fast, overclockable to at least 1.4 gHz for most people. Some people do 1.6 gHz but it's not stable for my phone. You can undervolt it by some amounts for that extra battery savings, and it's constantly having features added to it, like T9 dialing that I discovered was included (much MUCH love for this small thing).
For all the added features, I regularly go through my phone and make sure I don't have apps that do things that are now part of the phone, so I keep the app list short and sweet. Having redundant features means that 2 things are trying to do the same thing, and I'd rather punch out my battery more and more without giving up some conveniences I had Dialer One on my phone, and it's not that great looking, but I had it just for the T9 dialing. Once I saw that CM7 had a T9 dialing feature, I uninstalled Dialer One. The music app, while not as heavy on the eye candy, made me get rid of Doubletwist and Airsync. Airsync never really worked great, for me at least.
CM7 doesn't have fully working bluetooth on the Infuse, some people have trouble with auto brightness (my personal preference is that I'd rather use the status bar slider to adjust brightness), and HDMI out doesn't work. It also has some extra niceties, such as theming, a DSP Manager app (that controls audio levels and equalizers), and is pretty much always being updated.
The drop down bar can be customized almost entirely, and because bluetooth doesn't work, not that I want it, I got rid of that icon. I replaced it with a screen timeout toggle. It has many more options than that.
One thing, and I don't think this is CM7 exclusive, is that sometimes my text messages won't send. I'm using GOSMS as my messaging app until the stock messaging app starts sending ALL of my texts. MMS relies on a data connection so I tend to pull the drop down and enable that when I want to send a picture or download one. Once it starts working the same way, I'm uninstalling GOSMS because it tends to be heavy and sometimes lags up noticeably.
I don't use bluetooth, and I don't think I've ever opened that HDMI dongle packaging, much less tried to use it. While it would be nice if they functioned, I get from day to day without even thinking about those. Your mileage may vary.
I'll throw my support behind CM7. I briefly tried ZEUS, but switched back after a couple days.

The only way to get a rom that has everything working like it should is to flash an infused based rom ...NOT an aosp rom..... cm7 is good if you don't need Bluetooth....as cm7 and miui use a different bt stack then Samsung ...so in my opinion that issue wont be fixed....and they have been known to have data issues....flash ANY of the infuse based Rome if you want complete functionality....period

Like others say if you need BT audio or HDMI stick with Samsung roms. I could care less about both, i have been bouncing back and forth between CM7 and MIUI for months now whenever there is a noteworthy update. Both are very quick and clean in my opinion and you can't go wrong with either one. I have tried most Samsung roms available but they are always short lived on my device...they always feel as if lacking something. Props to the devs for making them available though!!!

I'm on cm7 and I keep going back to it everytime I flash something new. It just works the best for me. As for data issues, you need to setup the apn fix listed in n0ctrnl's compiled cm7 thread. It's in the original post I believe. Also I flashed the latest modem (uckl2) found in the sticky of development section for modems

Go to wifi settings, hit menu button and go to advanced. Under wifi sleep policy choose never. Should fix the wifi connection issues your having.
I've tried many, but Zeus is the best one that's fully functional (BT and HDMI).

Definately Zeus for now. It's snappy, everything works and theres even a few themes as well as an ICS launcher. All the AT&T bloat has been removed. I used to prefer stock, but Zeus made me convert. It's just more responsive than any other rom for the Infuse.
It's all a matter of personal preference. I've run about 12-15 different ROMs on my Infuse so far. I keep coming back to Sensation 1.1. I really like being able to edit my status bar.
I didn't care for the camera in CM7, but it is a very nice running ROM. Only thing I miss is not having an extended power menu.
Just play with a bunch of them until you find one you like.
