[Q] Dealing with lack of "Peak Times or "phoneAlarm Pro" - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All,
With the new 7.5 release, does anyone think it'll be possible to eventually have an app similar to phoneAlarm Pro or even get the simple setting of peak times? I know that the newer 7.x phones are a lot more restrictive than previous WM phones when it comes to what a dev is allowed to do.
Here's the thing, because there isn't (to my knowledge) a way to quiet the phone at night for all notifications except a real phone call, I leave my phone in another room. Bottom line I'd hate to have an emergency call come in at night and miss it because I don't want to keep the phone on the nightstand.
Thank you,

Well oddly enough I was searching for a possible answer today (as my search in XDA forums yesterday didn't show any results), and found this older post concerning notifications. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11432995#post11432995
So it appears the only way to keep the phone active for emergencies and turn off notification on email, sms, etc. is to just turn off cellular and wi-fi. Sorry MS, but this is stupid as hell...

Even with 7.5 windows phone still has the smoothest UI but is behind in important features. Unfortunately seprate notifications must not be a issue with ms

Can't receive incoming calls

Hi there, I am using VJgrace latest 3.4 ROM, I realized that nowadays, sometimes I would not be able to receive incoming calls, my friends and relatives have complained that I do not pick up their calls, they even showed me the proof of their call logs. They said there were dialing tone. So one day, I tried for myself and true enough, at times, the phone will just light up from idle, but it will not say that there is an incoming calls. When this happen, I cannot make outgoing calls as well, when I try to dial someone, it just hang there.
Any solution? Is this a radio or ROM problem?
I have run the GSM update
I faced the same problem too. I thought my friends were joking. just called myself to confirm. true enough the phone lights up for a second or two then it goes back to sleep.
this is serious. am thinking of going back to WM 5
Really? Wow. That's a new one. I guess I haven't seen this. illi - would you really go *all* the way back to WM5? Are you saying this is a problem in every WM6 ROM you have installed? I'm surprised... I've never seen it on my phone. But I don't get too many calls during the day. And I reboot my phone every 2 or 3 days just for good measure.

i cant afford to loose calls. some friends had complained since a few months back. so i suspect its all WM6 ROMs not just vj's.
i think it happened when the device is syncing because i receive lots of emails. so at that time the gprs/edge is being use. THIS IS MY WILD GUESS ONLY!! I noticed it (the device awakes then back to sleep) once while on active sync and at that moment emails were being downloaded from my email server.
How can yew trouble shoot this problem?

Do you have this checkbox selected? I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but it's one thing I saw.

not too sure but will check next time i active sync. anyway i rarely sync with my pc so i doubt thats the problem - i noticed once while hooked to pc the phone awakens and then sleep. i use mail2web.com's microsoft exchange to sync my emails. i active sync only to do spring cleaning on my device and SD.
if karhoe subscribe to the same telco as me than i suspect its the operator. (hello karhoe you there;-))
I have this problem even when the phone is not connected to Active Sync, when i'm outside. The phone just light up, and then poof, gone. Well, I am using DiGi telco. But I don't have this problem when using Andot's PEE, don't have it when using 3.0 ROM, only recently when I started using 3.1, had this problem, after so long, then use 3.4, still have it
I had this issue with WM5.. now with WM6 I didn't found (yet) this issue. (using EA ROM)
This is a quote of one of my posts (Oct 7 2006, 18:43, modaco):
i think this is a software issue..
i have a spv c600 and have problem with the telephony part (and many other spv c600 users)
1. some times when somebody is calling me the phone does not announce in any way that i have a call.
2. other times when somebody is calling me the phone send automatically a busy tone to the caller and again does not announce me that somebody has called me.
3. and other times when somebody is calling me, the caller is announced by the robot that 'the user is in an uncovered area or has the phone turned off' or it divert it to voice mail (if the WM user has voice mail active. i have it off)
however, point 1 and 2 can be 'detected' by eye on call (phonesharpen). only detected (no answer, no nothing).
- in the first case, a window with caller information is displayed as long as the caller is calling you.
- in the second case, a window appears and disparears extremly fast
to bad that the phonesharpen does not log the detected calls . i have mailed them about this, but on answer..
i gues the problem is the native telephone application
so .. in conclusion WM smartphones are not recommended for people who want to use them as a phone.. who knows what important calls you miss.. i hope this will be fixed someday

@karhoe you should tell this to NiTroGeN and to VJgrace
Gentlemen, I suspect this issue is somehow connected to currently selected homescreen. I had this issue on WM6 build 18120 homescreen with VOIP plugin, but when I chose another one not containing VOIP info, this issue has gone

I tend to believe that it is caused by either of these problems:
1 - the telco (I'm subscribing to the same telco as karhoe)
2 - the voip plugin on the Homescreen
This is what I'll do: I shall deactivate the voip plugin. But I cant afford to unsubscribe from my current telco; it offers the cheapest unlimited data plan. LOL!!
I have a feeling that it is related to VOIP, I did configure my VoIP using the xml method, and then I also installed the VoIP fix button for communication manager. Now im using HTC Home screen and so far, so good

Intermec CN3 WM5 wakeup issues

Hello all, I recently purchased an Intermec CN3 running Windows Mobile 5 on the Sprint CDMA network for development purposes and am having a couple of issues. It uses EV-DO Rev A I believe which allows for simultaneous voice/data, just for the record.
The first is the device randomly wakes up and turns on the screen. This morning, when I was in the car, I would push the power button to put the device in sleep mode.. every 15 seconds the screen would pop back on. I do not know if this is due to it trying to grab email, or what. However, now that I am at work, it has not come on in a few minutes. This is all random.
The only idea is that SEVEN, a push email service, is starting data on the device and it is waking up. I tried using a config tool to have data always on and this did not fix the issue. It will wake up even when there is no new email. I also have Battery Pack Pro installed.
My second issue is, when someone calls my phone and the phone is in sleep mode it takes about 5 rings for my phone to even register a call is coming in.. when my phone rings twice, the call goes to voicemail. Is there a way to tweak WM to make this faster?
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
This actually reminds me of the bugs present when we ported WM5 for the Blue Angel (same exact bugs)...
It might seem that you are right on your assumption of the data transfer. Try to disable/disconnect the EVDO connection (put it in Flight mode) and see if the device still wakes up by itself.
As far as the ring delay, you may want to read through this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=258109
This is a patch that was for both Himalaya and Blue Angel, but should in theory work for other WM5 devices as it seems to be modifications to the registry rather than anything else.
Just so you know, I do not believe that the CN3 is a HTC device, but since your problem was mildly general, you got lucky
Good luck...
Thanks for the reply.
It is certainly not an HTC device however this forum has some of the most knowledgeable people around and figured I'd give it a shot.
As you stated, this is a fairly generic question probably related to software and configuration.
You could try over in the Developers Forum that Intermec just launched. It's at http://community.intermec.com.

tell me MS WP7 is NOT User Friendly!!!

I updated to 7720 and machine becomes even slower.
Here is a list of problems that I have (not only in 7720 version, some of them exist in official OS too)
1. Two alarms set at the same time will halt the system. The only solution is re-starting the machine.
2. Can NOT "answer" call when system is in sleep mode. No re-start needed but clicking the power button to light the screen first.
3. Noise in the alert during a new email comes in.
4. System acts very slowly in some xbox-live games. (Ex. PES 2011, it looks like need more memory)
5. Machine always shown a new voice mail in my mailbox, even my voice box is empty. I have not find any solution for this yet.
My question is, does MS take care of WP7 seriously?
1. Do we need the battery percentage number?
Yes, we do. Click setting --> battery --> scroll down to the end to see the little precious number.
2. Do we need to turn on/off wiki, 3G data?
Yes, we do. Setting --> wifi--> on/off and setting --> data -> on/off
I did NOT understand how MS claims this is a productivity lift as using a WP7 phone.
Educated me please.
my answer is ...................... go jump off a roof to solve all your problems by "machine" i suppose you he mean the MOBILE PHONE.. but why machine..? it's not like it is a car or something.. nevermind.. about your problem... if you really have updated to build 7220 (which actually is not a OFFICIAL or any LEAKED build) then the problem you're facing will be because of that build.. however.. if your build number is a typo, then your build should be 7720 and i would suggest you to reinstall the software and see if there's any improvment.. i havent updated to 7720 i'm still on 7712 but everything is working like a charm.. and the answer to your last question.. YES!! Microsoft is REALLY taking care of the windows phone development.. the only problem is they follow Apple's footsteps.. making your phone better with bitesizes
Troll...... Listen up.
1st This is the wrong section to be posting in.
2nd Im willing to bet the problems that your having are more of user error issues that anything else.
If you dont like WP7, sell your phone and get a new one with a differnt OS. Problem sloved.
I am not native English speaker. So the machine in my dictionary means mobile phone.
my problem is not only in 7720 build. I hope i can say it works like a charm.
unfortunately it does not.
anyway, thank you for your inputs.

This is a development thread, you should be posting in the general or questions section. I know english is your second languge, but I do think you should be able to read well enough to figure that out. And if you have a terrible life change it up, dont just sit there complaining. So the same goes for your phone, if you dont like your OS change to a different one.

my focus on 7720 exhibits NONE of those issues. i would say it's either your phone specifically, your sofware (reload it) or you.
msft has been the most proactive in listening to their consumer base compared to any of the other mobile OS providers.
I can't speak about the games but I don't have any of the other problems with my WP7 build 7712.
The last one is an issue with either your carrier or your SIM.

A lot of the promise of WP7 is to eliminate the need for some of the obsessive low-level tweaking and constant tinkering needed to get the most from a mobile phone.
In other words, why do you actually want to constantly be turning off wi-fi and 3G data? Probably because other phones and previous experience tells you that you have to do those things in order to prolong your battery life. Same with battery meters.
With WP7 I no longer feel the need to know the exact percentage of battery remaining. The user experience is optimized to focus on productivity and not on obsessive details. I am very happy to have tiles with my loved ones, apps I use a lot, facebook updates, and inboxes on my home screen instead of having to clutter it up with gauges and switches.
If you really can't live without those things, I suggest Android. Again I'll say that they're only necessary to overcome traditional shortcomings of other mobile platforms.
The first is indeed a big problem, android has a good deal.Hope to solve the problem ms

[Q] Whatsapp get stuck in wifi

Hey fellow wp7 lovers.
Lately ive been using a lot of messaging on whatsapp. I can chat fine on 3G but whenever i switched over to wifi... the message either gets stuck on delivering (1 line) ... or simply just shows the clock (not delivered)
Solution was always to switch 3G back on or turn on/off the wifi...
Its becoming quite tedious really...
Is anyone else experiencing this issue?? Or anyone know of a better solution?
(dont really want to use my 3G lately as its closely approaching my limit)
Got exactly the same issue. Don't know where i'm talking about really, but recently the thought hit me that maybe it is because when you come out of stand-by mode and send a message seconds later, your phone wants to send it over WI-FI, which might not be possible yet since it's still trying to connect, which then maybe results in a message not able to be sent and ends up being stuck on your phone, even though your phone connects to WI-FI succesfully after a while.
I usually turn off 3g, open the app, en most of the times it helps, which doesn't make sense at all. I am not sure, anyway. Haven't paid too much attention to it. Sometimes I just know its the WhatssAppserver, but I can't tell every time, and that makes it difficult to research the exact cause.
I really hope whatsapp releases an update and irons out its issues. Whatsapp on WP7 sucks.
It isn't that bad! It works, and thats more then we had. However, I don't understand why they can't manage to get simple things right...
hm i wonder if this is design flaw.. or purely just to save battery...
Coz on the android whatsapp, the internet is always connected even when on locked screen but on wp7 its not! The only solution is to use 3G!
This makes whatsapp useless if you only have wifi available... >< so much for instant messaging
Later on i found out ur wifi STAYS connected (even when in lock screen) when you plug it in to charge.... so thats the only workaround
so can we petition microsoft to add wifi on all the time in the next update??
OR does anyone know of an app that always require wifi connection?
(as described in this thread - http://forums.wpcentral.com/windows-phone-7-os-discussion/179861.htm)
Hm another quick note.....
how come whatsapp on ANDROID is so frickin fast!!!!! On iphone it takes about 5s to load into it. WP7 about 7s....and ANDROID is INSTANT!!!!
Lol is WP7 and APPLE so closed off that we cannot integrate whatsapp more into the OS? bah

I've Given Up On Android

The very first Android phone I purchased was in 2010, and it was an HTC Desire. I have been a huge fan of Android ever since, owning literally hundreds of phones and tablets from various manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, Xiaomi, LG, Sony....the list goes on and on. I've tried iOS a few times, but I simply just didn't like iOS. In recent years my loyalty to Android was severely tested because of an issue that many may think is inconsequential and even petty, but to me it was ultimately a deal-breaker - delayed push notifications (predominantly when the screen is locked and off)
So picture this - I'm sat at home with three other members of my family who also own Android phones, and we have a group chat (FB Messenger) going with other members of the family. Every time someone posts a comment *PING*...but wait, four android phones, and only two went *PING*...then a few seconds later another goes *PING*, then a few seconds later the fourth goes *PING*.
I'm not exactly sure when this issue first arose, but I only really started to notice around the time Oreo was mainstream, and I've been obsessed with trying to figure out a cure ever since. Of course I've tried literally everything that's been suggested, hard resets, turning off battery optimisations, locking the affected app in the recents, disabling Doze with ADB, clearing the cache, custom roms, different routers, different networks, heartbeat fixing apps for GCM/FCM, bla bla bla...none of it works. Now I have finally accepted there is a flaw in the way the Android OS handles push notifications, a flaw that affects every single Android device, at least since Oreo, and maybe even before. It's a strange one because the issue doesn't seem to occur when the screen is awake, only when it is locked and off. At one stage I was hopeful features like AOD on AMOLED devices might be a solution, but alas, even with AOD active, the problem persists.
Now before you say "I've never had a problem with push notifications on my Android device", are you sure. Have you ever really been in a situation where you would notice? Try it for yourself, perform a test using a similar scenario to the one I mentioned in the second paragraph. Create a group chat in any messaging app you like, and have several of the group members with Android devices sit in the same room with their screens locked and off, then have one person send a message in the group chat, then watch as some get the messages immediately, some with a slight delay, and some not at all until they wake the screen. Do it a few times and you will soon notice there is no pattern at all, sometimes you will get the notifications immediately while others are delayed, then sometimes others will get the notifications immediately and yours will be delayed.
My most recent (and very last) Android purchase was the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G (outright, not on contract, so you know roughly how much I paid). When I'm paying that amount of money for a mobile phone, I expect timely push notifications as a given, but no, the same issue occurs even with one of the very latest and greatest. I contacted Samsung Tech Support and the guy admitted it's the most common complaint he deals with every single day. I was previously given a similar story by Motorola and Huawei support too, and a little digging around online shows that thousands of Android users are complaining about the very same issue. Needless to say they now have that phone back.
I know I know, something this trivial shouldn't really bother me this much, but it does, it's just who I am. I can accept there is no such thing as a perfect mobile phone, I can live with an average camera, a budget processor, a dull screen, lifeless aesthetics etc. but there are some compromises I just won't make. Apart from the obvious (the ability to make and receive calls and texts), my requirements are quite simple - I require a phone with stable WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC, a decent battery life and of course timely push notifications. With no Android device currently able to fulfil my very simple requirements, it really did only leave me with one option - joining the dark side....so I bought an iPhone.
I have owned an iPhone for just over a month (that's two weeks longer than my last three Android devices), and thus far my delayed push notification woes have vanished. Now when someone in the family posts in our group, *PING* immediately every single time. The battery life is acceptable for someone like me who isn't the most demanding user, WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC have presented no issues, and it makes and receives calls and texts without a problem. I can honestly say the only thing I miss so far is my Android App Drawer. I know iOS introduced their App Library in iOS 14, and it's a start, but it's just not the same. There is probably an app in Cydia that would give me an app drawer, but I'm not quite ready to get into the world of jailbreaking just yet (I'm not that brave).
So after my big rant, here's a summary - Android push notifications are broken, they've been broken for some time and Google don't seem interested in fixing the problem. If someone told me tomorrow that Google had finally fixed push notifications, I would drop iOS like a hot potato and rekindle my love for Android. Please Google, help bring me back from the dark side, it's really cold out here!

Now that's what I call a structured rant!
But what type of phone did you owned ?
I know this problem from samsung phones, and other phones I've tested. usually it's because of the OEM's aggressive take on battery management. They freeze apps in the background, and run them periodically to check notifications.
I know that's frustrating, but with your story I could feel the social isolation you've felt. And even with all the perks in the world, I wouldn't want a phone that makes me the third wheel.
But I'm much more radical than you, I don't want to change my phone, so I changed my friends. Way better now you should try it, those Apple "cool kids" pigeons weren't good friends anyway.
Obviously I'm just kidding, but I think the issue can be solved by using a ROM to espace your OEM's restrictions, or try another brand. If you ever want to come back to the light (which I'm sure you will because I couldn't bare iPhones after using an android all this time, seriously wtf if that file manager of them, and wtf is the "Other" memory partitions that increases without me having any control over it!), ask in various xda sections if users experience notifications latency, and if they don't know suggest them your little experiment you described in this post.
Hope you'll come back from your journey in the shadow,
Have a great day
Interesting rant.
Were all the phones that your friends had on the same networks? It could easily be a network latency issue
affecting how fast each message was distributed. Given that the passage of a message, say a Whatsapp message is at least: :
from phone screen
to
Whatapp encryption software
to
wi-fi-switch
to
domestic router
to
domestic ISP
to
internet backbone
to
commercial ISP
to
Whatsapp run cloud server
to
Whatsapp redirection processes
to
commercial ISP
to
internet backbone
to
domestic ISP
to
domestic router
to
wifi-switch software
to
friend phone
to
Whatsapp decryption software
to
phone notification sub-routine
to
phone screen
I'd say a small discrepancy in arrival times would be expected.....
I only mention this because it seems that you've tested massive of phones - but did you take into account different networks?
