[Q] Fastboot problems - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know what's going on, but when I use ADB to reboot into bootloader it just sits at "Starting Fastboot Protocol Support." I can't flash images like that, can I? The time I tried, it froze my whole computer.
I'm trying to flash it back to stock from the Tiamat rom. I've got everything copied in the ADB tools and platform-tools folders correctly. ADB sees the Xoom and can reboot it in this, but it seems Fastboot is broken.
Any ideas?

Change the cable your using. Mine was doing that crap too. Make sure you have it unlocked. If your PC is freezing after you swap cables, try a different PC. You may have to reload your sdk also. I couldn't roit my xoom at first cuz sdk was corrupted. Reloaded it and it worked. Sometimes that damn Microsoft update screws up your file system in sdk.

You really need to use the Moto usb cable that comes with the Xoom. When I tried to use a different one it had me stumped until I realized it was the wrong usb cable.

That's what I mean, but the cable could be bad. My tb cable works fine for my xoom, but my others don't. Sometimes the pins just don't touch. It is a standard usb to micro usb cable. I was just trying to cover all bases. I have noticed that sometimes my xoom won't connect on my pc, but hook it to the wife's and it connects.

Oh and if your doing stock for the upgrade don't worry they flash it to 3.2.2 with a different method. Send it like it is and it should come back working.

[Q] PC doesn't recognize phone

Running Android Revolution 5.2.3.
Problem:
I connect my inspire 4G to my PC via USB, and the computer (windows 7) doesn't recognize it. Nothing in the device manager. The phone's LED does light up upon connection to the PC, and it does charge. PC stopped recognizing the phone within the past 48 hours.
What I have done to the phone recently:
I did a vision_wipe_efs on the phone using the "safe" method to attempt to fix the GPS problems I was having. Note that I have used this method many times before with no ill effects. The phone might have already had the problem prior to wiping GPS data.
Solutions tried:
Tried two different micro USB cables.
Tried two different computers.
Installed the latest CM7 nightly (147), problem still persists.
Any ideas?
i also tried booting the phone into recovery and mounting usb storage. didn't work.
just installed the stock ATT RUU by extracting the zip from the exe, renaming it PD98IMG, and booting the phone into bootloader. Still doesnt work.
On your computer, download the drivers from the stickies then connect
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
drivers are already installed--but you dont need the drivers to access the mass storage mode of the phone. you only need them for HTC sync and USB tethering
You never stated what you was needing to connect for

whoops. fair enough
common problem for the inspire.
try these 2 things
1. Pull the SD card out of the phone and then reinsert it. Its what got my buddies phone connecting to his comp again.
2. If 1 doesnt work, if you have java installed, uninstall it and then reboot your comp and get rid of Sync off your computer if you have it(leaving the drivers of course). Reboot one more time and then connect your device. it's what worked for me.
edit: i know 2 seems kinda weird (at least imo), but if i install java on my computer(which ive done after to test if my theory was right), my phone wont connect to my computer anymore. so, i go java-less.
May be a dumb question, but what option do you have selected under Settings > Connect to PC > Default Connection Type ? If it's set to a default of Charge Only, and you told it not to ask you again, that could be the root of the problem.
You seem to know what you're doing and you seem to be screwed. Try uninstall sync and all HTC drivers then uninstall anything that says Java like the Guy said above. Then reinstall jre and plug your phone in and let windows install thd drivers. You also might want to run diagnostics and try a different port. The SD card has nothing to do with it because it wont charge.
Your last resort should be unrooting it and reverting to stock ROM, kernel, radio and RIL. Make sure there is no trace of a root. Then you should do a warrenty claim because your inspire seems defective.

Nah it's set to ask on connection. Also tried setting it to USB mass storage, and no dice.

Uninstalled sync, java, all htc drivers and still nothing. Looks like i'll be going back to stock and S-ON, and returning it to HTC!
I just bought an Atrix since I kind of knew I would have to warranty the inspire. The screen is a lot brighter, the battery life isn't going to suck balls (1830mah vs 1250mah on the inspire!), the quality of the speaker is miles better than the inspire, and GPS got a lock in downtown within a few seconds (where my inspire 4g would never see more than 2 or 3 satellites!).
I'll just get a refurb inspire sell it, and keep the Atrix.
Thanks for the help guys.

How can you unroot it with pc not recognizing?
Thanks
by flashing the stock RUU. When you start the RUU tool just search your comp for a file called rom.zip. Rename it to PD98IMG.zip, and start your inspire in bootloader mode. It will install from there.
Also, does anyone know how to restore S-ON without going through my PC?
You can type this in terminal emulator
cd /data/local
./gfree -s on
sync
This is from mudknot sticky.
No Hay de Queso No Mas de Papa
I've had this problem for a long time but doesn't happen anymore after buying a new usb cable.
Idk if it was the cable. I re-rooted my phone as well.

I have two cables that both used to work with my inspire, and continue to work with my Atrix...so i'm pretty certain it isn't the cables.

Tried that, doesnt work. Just says cannot find gfree.
I cannot follow mudknot's sticky as it requires the phone to be plugged into the PC.

[Q] Phone won't connect to PC in download mode

I recently obtained a Charge stuck in download mode, thinking it would be an easy fix... guess not!
The phone seems to be working fine (minus being stuck in download mode) and it should be an easy restore through Odin or the Samsung programming tool, but I can't my computer to recognize the phone. I've tried multiple ports and multiple cables (all of which worked when flashing other Samsungs—Galaxy S phones) and nothing seems to be working. No driver installs on Windows and if I boot into OS X on my Mac, Heimdall doesn't detect a download mode device.
Is there something obvious I'm doing wrong here or could it be the phone itself?
Have you tried installing the windows drivers for the charge from samsungs website
Edit: Attached the windows drivers for the charge as samsung took them down

you can get your phone debricked for 40 bucks, but I am not sure if your phone is even bricked.
Try pulling the battery for a while- make sure all residual power is gone.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
check to see if your phone set to 'USB debug mode".
Installed the drivers, which didn't help. The phone is still not being recognized (it doesn't even show up as a USB device).
Does the phone boot at all? Or have you tried?

The phone doesn't boot at all. Any attempts to get it into recovery or to boot normally just make it turn on in download mode again. I haven't been able to try PC based methods as it's still not being recognized.
I actually opened up the phone, grabbed a multimeter, and tested out the USB port. Surprisingly, it seems to be good, so that doesn't seem to be the problem with getting the computer and phone to talk.
Any more ideas?
When you plug it into your computer, go to start (assuming you have Win 7) and type "device manager". Does anything even pop up when you plug it in?

Self-bump, any ideas? I'm about to sell it for parts as I can't think of any way to get this to work.

No that is the unbrickable mod aka you take apart your charge and solder stuff. There are some other guys who debrick but i don't know the link.
Do you know anyone with the charge software already on their computer? Or anyone that can send you the link?

Stuck at recovery?

OK guys, serious problem here. Went to install aeon 1.4 on my girls infuse, and decided to do a clean wipe from stock, (heimdall) on MacBook. And it just gets stuck at red recovery, so far I've tried using two different computers running windows, and even the MacBook with paralells. To no success, MOST flash attempts end in a failure somewhere in factory fs. Or cache.
One thing I should note Ghats oddly different, is her phone, ever since day one, when going into download mode, you get a warning screen about how its unsafe to flash aftermarket roms,
Cable works.

There has been some reported issues with the heimdall and heimdall 1 click on Mac.
You may need to borrow or use a PC based OS to get it to flash. You will also need admin privileges to flash the jar file.

One other problem is an incredible difficulty connecting to windows
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
I've tried using MY infuse to get all the drivers setup, and it will connect, but when you try to connect during download mode, or USB mounted storage under recovery, it either does nothing, (hers) or in download mode says unrecognized device (both) I was thinking it might be the cable, but the cable worked FINE on my phone when I flashed it on the Mac. Now suddenly its a complicated issue...

the 1-click has its own drivers built in. I usually have luck switching to different usb port
edit:
Try GOOGLE "how to use heimdall or how to install heimdall drivers" for some suggestions. The other thing I can think of is to try attaching a USB hub to one of the port and try again. The newer hub may help your pc recognize the newer device on the older port...beyond that, I can't help much further. It's a matter of find a pc that works for you.
If you look thru the Q/A thread and the main thread, there has been some report about Mac not liking heimdall or vice versa

On my mac, those drivers work, on my PC, my device doesnt come up as USB Composite Device, so it doesnt let me fix it. it just shows up as unkown device.
I believe i could fix this issue if i could somehow transfer a rom file onto the usb storage, or access the memory card at all from recovery

unroot with no usb

all but given up on my wifes g2x. can't find a rom/bb that works and even if i did the usb charges but won't connect to my computer.
so i have another one being overnighted to me. i removed the superuser app but its still rooted and has cwm mod.
do they check this crap when it gets back to where ever? is there any way to unroot/removed cwm without usb?
They do check it. And far as I know there is no way to do it with out usb. Does it not charge or just won't connect to PC?
Sent from my LG-P999
You CAN unroot it without a usb with the z4root app. Find the apk file and install it, then click unroot.
Edit: are you sure you its the phones problem and not the USB? It sounds like you may not have the USB drivers installed for you computer

Has to retract what I was trying to imply because it wouldn't display right. Basically what I was saying was reinstall the drivers. Maybe even uninstall the old one first. And make sure you are using a data cable. Some USB cables are simply just for charging and won't transfer data which you PC won't recognize it

done the reinstall of drivers to no avail. and once again, i know the cable and drivers are good cause my g2x works fine
fukk me! i grabbed the wrong phone and unrooted mine
nah well.
edit: her phone is all sorts of dorked up. wouldn't even download the z4 using the QR. and when i finally get it up and running it FC's
guess i'll just take my chances and hope they don't try and get in the bootloader to see cwm
edit 2: ok i got it unrooted from here, yet cwm remains. any way to remove that?

[Q] Need URGENT help with USB!

Suddenly my USB isnt detected anymore! What I mean:
- When I plug the USB cable into PC (mac or linux) it will charge but wont show any notification that the usb has been plugged and to turn on mass storage.
- This happens with stock rom, custom rom, anyway, tested 4 roms, happened to all even stock
- I'm also unable to mount the USB with CWM, nothing happens
What can I possibly do???
Thanks

Try another cable. Clean your USB port, there's a lot of crud getting in there sometimes.
i tried to clean with a wood stick, some dirty came out but then it isnt working yet.. tried 3 cables already :////

If you can clean the contacts with a tiny brush (very small pipe cleaner works alright) with a bit of isopropyl alcohol it might helps. Make sure to clean thouroughly. Some people use sharpened toothpicks for cleaning the dirt too.

I can't help you much more than that. I'll sound like the negative guy, but if you're sure it's absolutely clean, you tried other cables and other USB ports, then it's not impossible it is broken.

it does charges... i CANT mount with recovery, nothing happens.. pc drivers arent corrupt because i use linux never needed them...
also.. noticed one thing.. on the boot screen (when u turn on with power + vol up), if i open fastboot devices, it recognizes my phone.. thats really odd!!!
See if you can connect it on another machine, or a Windows machine (I know).
If ADB recognize your device, then you can use commands to copy files to and from the device. You can also use AirDroid to transfer files wirelessly.
I got this same issue today. I have 2 nexus S devices and I flashed all the same things on both using the same USB cable and now one will not mount to PC. This happened after trying that massive tweak package. i will have to wait til next eekend now to try and fix it, when I see my niece again. If you figure this out I would appreciate it if you share with me!
it doesnt make any sense to me fastboot detecting it and android/CWM dont.. thats odd!!!
ok... so it just started to work again now from nothing! cant really explain it! i changed the rom day before yesterday and still wasnt working now with the same rom, started to work again!
I'm having a similar prob as of last night, but fastboot doesn't recognize the phone.
Tried in linux, Windows, Mac, etc......nada.
