I have an Otterbox Defender on my Desire. When you make calls with HTC Sense or most Androids I believe, the screen shuts off when you hold the phone to your ear but when you bring it back down to end the call or what not, the screen is supposed to turn back on allowing you to use it. When I have my Defender on my screen does not turn back on. If I call someone and they don't answer I have to strip my phone of the case fairly quickly before the call goes the voicemail, sometimes it doesn't quite work out that way. I emailed customer support at Otterbox and they are replacing my case for free (pretty sweet right?) But I'm afraid that its not my case that causes this. Does anybody know what could be doing this and what I can do to fix it?
Thanks.
Test it
The listing for that case says it allows 'Complete interaction of the device's functions', and the picture (PDF) of the case looks to have an oval-shaped cutout for both the proximity and light sensors. Your screen should turn back on when you move it from your ear during a call, so something is wrong.
The easiest way to test is to get a digital camera, any will do. point it at the front of your phone like you were going to take a photo. You should see the little proximity sensor blinking during a call. It's at the top left, just above the screen. The light from the sensor isn't visible to the eye, but camera sensors pick it up fine.(You can use this trick with most remote controls, too.) Try it with the case on, then off. If you see a difference then the case is the problem.
Some ROMs allow you to hang up calls by pressing the power button. I'm using Oxygen and I prefer this feature to waiting for the screen and buttons to come up. It doesn't fix your problem but it's a workaround.
EDIT: here's an example from a different phone on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZEEoIYp-Dc
Thanks for your suggestion and your reply. I'm gonna see what happens with this new Otterbox when it arrives. If it doesn't work I am going to see if I can get a patch or something to flash to make it so I can either hang up with the power button like you said or that I can turn my screen on with my track pad.
There should be a little piece of plastic in the spot covering the sensor, if it is dirty it won't allow the screen to come back on. Had a customer the other day with the exact same problem with the defender series on her Mesmerize/Fascinate and cleaning that area helped.
What series is your new case? Another Defender? Or are you going to try for Commuter? I personally like the way the Commuter looks more than Defender.
My new case should be a defender as that is what case I'm having problems with. There isn't a whole lot of variety for Otterbox in Canada, they are rather scarce. I had a near impossible time finding my defender and I've never even seen a commuter for it here.

Anyone else having issues with screen locking with the VZW version? Even when I push the power button at the top my screen comes back on in the holster.
Apparently (a Sprint owner can confirm) the Sprint version has "long press end key" built in to lock the device. I noticed that if I locked the device while using TFLO3D it would somehow get unlocked without me manually doing it.
Anyone else having same issue?
I am installing S2U2 now ... will report back
Also I downloaded LockMeLite
I have the VZW TP2 and have had the same problem, usually when I would slide it into my side pouch. It's annoying.
I would rather have it lock automatically then unlock. I think there might be something built in to it that if the proximity sensor and buttons are pressed that it auto locks. Even though at times I get annoyed that I have to unlock it, I would rather that happen then pocket dial someone...
i have not confirmed this but i think that if u have a magnetic holster, than the magnet is active like the switch that turns ur phone from portraight to landscape when u slide out the keyboard. when u put the phone in the case it passes the magnet and thinks that u just opened the keyboard
@joeyc
I have seen blackberries and model-specific holsters which do that, but I believe something else here is to blame. I have noticed this issue in my pocket, and unless parts of my anatomy are magnetic, I would have to assume something else is going on.

Yeah it does change the orientation of the screen as well so you could be right.

Yep, i was shoving it into a Blackberry holster. (until my orderd one gets here)..lol...so yeah, something definitely is going on.
i could just wave my phone infront of my case and the screen will turn on along with the orientation changing
So, is this specific to BB case which use to magnet to turn off screen when holstered (very smart), or is this an issue with all magnetic closure cases???
I haven't even found a TP2 CDMA belt case without a magnetic closure.
its an issue with all magnetic cases
From looking at other forums like ppcgeeks and others it appears that most everyone is using something like S2U2
With S2U2 installed I have no issues with my magnetic case

S2U2 it is!
question for all of you people who have recently started using S2U2...have u noticed a significant dranage in memory or battery..the reason im asking this is bc ive always used S2U2 so i havent had a chance to notice...im trying to find ways to extend my battery life bc its horrible on the newer devices
Just make sure every option in S2U2 is turned off.
Don't enable any of the options or features. Use it purely as a lock tool.
thats really all i use it as...i dont use the caller id,appts,s2p, or anything like that...will that help to increase my battery life and memory??? also, is there any other way to increase my battery life????
Is there anyway to default to S2U2 for the lock instead of the one that's on there now?
Magnetic Cases is the problem
I first had this issue on the 6800 and it turned out to be the magnetic case. The phone has a sensor looking for a change in a magnetic field- this happens every time you take out your stylus, and so the screen turns on.
The light-powered magnet used for keeping the leather hip cases closed interferes with the sensors on the phone and cause some odd, undesirable results... I prefer to play it safe and stay away from anything magnetic on a phone this complex.
Just my 2 cents...
as far as cases themselves go, i had issues like all have described in finding the right case that wouldn't do this. The HTC branded case has more room within its pouch so it doesn't effect the screen or buttons, it's magnetic and works fine. Just figured i'd lend an alternate solution besides hardware tweeks. hope this helps
Ran across this today searching for cases for the Epic. Anyone using one? Its interesting in that it locks the slider during normal use and hinges open if you want to use the keyboard.
http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=10100000_10000000_11001061&products_id=31414
Now this looks like quite a nice case for functionality.
Now if they just took off the whole part in the back for the clip and form fit the corners a bit more and offered it in more colors that'd be nice.
This may be the best thing I can do for now, I have been scouring for a jelly case to slip over the epic, since I never use the keyboard
Now, if somebody has the ability to cleanly cut aluminum and wants to sell a matched set consisting of this case with a hole cut in the back for the hump on the extended battery the other guy is selling to poke through... (strokes credit card and sighs)
It's hard to tell from the pics... does the case snap onto the lower half, or does the phone just rest inside?
How firmly does it secure the phone when the case is closed? Does the power button still cause the two halves to separate a little, or are both held firmly in place from both sides?

There are videos on you tube. The bottom looks like a very snug press fit. Top must be looser to allow for the hinge to work.

I had a similar case for my old HTC Titan. I LOVED it. Being a pretty serious phone abuser, that case kept my phone together!
-Rob
I used to have a similar case for my Treo and they are extremely well made. I irregularly dropped my phone from about 5 feet in the air onto hard linoleum and it never suffered any indignities. These come in both black and silver so if you want a different color you would want the silver so you could send it out to be powder coated.
I just ordered one.
Mine came last night.
The good: locks the slider firmly closed. No wobble or "play" at all when pressing the power button. Phone easy to remove (for GameGripper purposes).
The bad: Feels terrifyingly slippery compared to the Seidio ActiveX. Obstructs "slide down" gesture for notifications.
The seemingly fatal (a big one): my "back" fake hardkey keeps randomly going berserk... but ONLY that specific one. The foam in the top half seems to be confusing the capacitive sensor.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Update: I've had the 'search' fake hardkey freak out a few times on me, too.
Another problem: it's definitely affecting reception. 4G and GPS barely work with the case in place.
Sigh. So close. So agonizingly close. It's awesome to not have the phone shear and jiggle apart every time I hit the power button, and the fact that it allows the phone to be easily removed for the Game Gripper without really compromising the slide-out keyboard's usability is very cool.
I'm really convinced that this case went straight from plastic prototype to mass production before anyone actually tried to use it in an area with 4G service, high humidity (presumably what's screwing up the foam and touchscreen), and who didn't just assume that the GPS was dysfunctional because Samsung sucks.
Sigh. Too expensive to throw away, and really nice in ways that ultimately don't matter because the touchscreen-button problem makes it totally unusable
The plot thickens: more touchscreen observations:
* Oddly, there's NO FOAM around the lower part of the screen where the phantom-pressed fake hardkeys are.
* Last night, it went completely berserk with phantom button presses on cue when I rubbed the latch a certain way.
This suggests that the problem's root cause might extend to the electrical conductivity of the case itself. It's strange, because I wasn't able to find reports of the same problem for users of Monaco cases for other phones (like the Droid). Lots of complaints about signal attenuation, but no reports of touchscreen problems.
I'm seriously tempted to buy some liquid electrical tape and coat the inside of the lid to see whether it helps. The problem DOES seem to go away when the lid is no longer in contact with the screen. However, if it's happening because the sensor is acting kind of like a Hall Effect sensor and the case is acting like a Faraday cage, nothing short of making the case (or at least the top lid) out of plastic is likely to fix the problem. Still, it's worth a try since I really like the case itself, and my alternative is to basically chuck it.
Update: as an experiment, I wrapped black electrical tape around the bottom lip of the top part. It helped a lot. I think I might have also found a contributing cause: cat fur. I think wisps of cat fur might be bridging the metal case & screen and carrying static electricity to the sensor. Oddly, though, some of its *worst* back-arrow spasams have occurred with the phone laying on the desk, untouched, 3 feet away.
I'm still trying to think of a good way to plastic-coat the case without making it look bad & get a nice, even black rubbery coating on it.

How thin is it compared to the other plastic cases?
Very interested in getting the Monaco Aluminum Case, which is very similar to this one. My last concern, how thin is it compared to Seidio Innocase Surface?
My wife has a brand new Infuse 4g, stock rom, not rooted. Everything works fine except that every once in a while while in a call, the screen will go black (proximity sensor) but will not come back on when pulled away from her face. Even hitting the power button will not bring it up. This has happened when answering a call too. She'll accept the call, and the screen will immediately go black. It doesn't happen all the time, and appears very random. She has it in a Ballistic HC case. The problem has never occurred out of the case, but that isn't to say it won't. Any idea what the problem could be? Anyone else out there having the problem that can attribute it to the case? I'm willing to cut the screen protector out of the case (at least the part over the sensor) but don't want to if it's not the problem. Thanks in advance for any possibilities.

If she has the first gen Ballistic then she needs to return it to ATT and get a second gen case for free. They had problems with the first gen. There is a number on the edge of the case that will tell you if she needs it or not. It is very small writing and should say C-02 if it says C-01 then she has the older version case and needs the new one that says C-02. I went and got another one as i had the C-01 case and the side buttons made it do weird things. The new case works flawlessly.
I looked and it appears this one is the c-02. The Ballistic rep said they weren't experiencing problems with this. My wife cut away the clear piece that covered the proximity and light sensor and the problem is gone. I would have rather not had to go that route, but it is what it is. I'm just happy it works now.
I've been having issues with the light sensor
While in a call, i take it away from my ear and the screen simply does not turn on
This leads to me being unable to hang up my calls! The power button does not hang up the calls
I know its from my case, but I love my case, is there anyways to turn off the light sensor (with or without root) or an alternative way to hang up calls?
The case in mention is a trident case
Best solution. Contact Trident tell them about the problem they may send a case that is fixed to work properly.

To the people having problems with the proximity sensor, its all about how you line up the front of the case when putting it on. I had a similar problem with my White Trident case. To alleviate the issue I would make a phone call to my daughters phone(just to have the phone call active while I applied the case). If the screen was off as I placed the two halves together(meaning the light sensor was blocked) I would simply move the case around a bit until the screen came on and carefully snap the upper half of the case on and then move towards the bottom. Since I only removed the case like once a week this wasn't too much of an inconvenience. Its the little bar of plastic between the speaker grille and the light sensor(apparently placed there for aesthetic purposes, since I see no other reason for it) that causes the issue. Apparently Trident got wise to this, because the black Cyclops case I purchased a month later does not have that little plastic bar. I can post pics of the case differences, and even a video showing placement around the sensor if needed.

I cannot figure out how to line it up
Hi All,
I have a relatively rugged cover on my HTC One M9. The cover is great for protecting the phone, but it isn't particularly 'button friendly'. Half the time when I try to turn the volume up on my phone (using the volume up button) the volume goes down, or the volume 'bounces' between going up and down. Many times when I have attempted to turn the volume down (using the volume down button) I have inadvertently turned the screen off, due to accidentally engaging the power button. Ultimately I don't think that the button placement on this phone is particularly well thought out. On future phones I will always check to make sure that the power button is nowhere near the volume buttons. This being said for the foreseeable future I will be using my new HTC One M9 phone so I am wondering if anyone can suggest a good cover that won't cause my buttons to 'play up'. My preference is for a gel cover, or similar, essentially anything that doesn't cover the screen (e.g.: flip covers).
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Davo
Hello there, i would suggest you forget the ugly gel cases and try this one: https://youtu.be/xAqf6hsQ2yQ
After doing a bit of research (I just picked up this phone the other day), I decided to order the Spigen Neo Hybrid, I was going to go with a casemate because I had one a while back and really liked it, anyway. On their site it runs about $35 but I ordered this one yesterday from Amazon for about $20, pretty much everyone has good things to say, even a few people on here recommended it:
https://www.amazon.com/SpigenĀ®-META...+One+M9++case&refinements=p_72:2491149011#Ask
After plenty of searching for "Best Case for HTC One M9", it pretty much boils down to a handful and what you decide will probably be based on your preference. Just looking at the first page of google search results spits back plenty of choices: https://www.google.com/webhp?source...=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=best case for htc one m9
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the suggestions.
casperlt1 - Can you please leave some feedback on how you found the 'Spigen' cover?
Kind Regards,
Davo
I've had my M9 for nearly a year and have the Spigen Thin Fit cast on it. I don't drop my phones regularly and have never shattered a screen, so my criteria was just to get something that would give better grip, add as little thickness as possible, and let me use the buttons without issue, and this case has been the perfect solution.

I had that problem (the volume 'bounces' between going up and down) with the spigen ultra hybrid case, it has some bump to reach the buttons, all did was to cut those bumps with an x-acto and now it's perfect
I've used many cases with mine. The ice view always tears at the hinge, the rugged ones were very cumbersome and one led to my phone dying from water damage (rain collecting in the top part of the case and leaching through the irda blaster)
Spigen neo is my current case and I really like it apart from its far too easy to press the buttons. While driving with the phone in my pocket it often turns itself up or down but I like the case
