I cant remember off the top of my head exactly, but it requires backing up the contacts to the SD card (export both the phone and the SIM in case you have some mixed up). Search for *.vcf like I did on the SD card because I didn't know where it was saved yesterday haha.
Then import into Google via Gmail (Contacts > Tab button: More > Select Import)
You'll see a bunch of repeats, so under that same menu you can find and merge contacts. After that on your Sensation Go into Settings > Sync (something i cant remember) > and select Google and select synchronize contacts if it isn't already.
I'll come back in a few hours if I manage to remember

You did the right thing by starting a thread for this question. The information can not be found with an internet search; the only way to find out how to do this task is by asking on XDA. There is no possibility that it is explained on dozens or even hundeds of threads, FAQ's, and self-help sites.
In fact, you're probably the second person who ever wanted to move contacts to a Google account; whoever gives you the answer will have been the first person, and he found out by using a Jedi mind trick on a smartphone.

I Did the trick,
You must hold the person you wanted to send to gmail. As vcard. Picture included! Then share or mail it to your own gmail. Make sure you can load mail into you htc. Then just open and tap the attached file. It should open and will ask you where you Wanted to store it. Choice gmail course. It wil now link the phonesavednr. My phone is good clear now I mean simcard
And remember to add only gmail numbers if you want that gmail contacts is updated all the time.
I hope you will Thank me for this hint.
Peace brothers

Backup contacts + fb link

I have all my contacts saved as Google contacts so they sync with gmail automatically, but it seems like it doesn't copy the contact picture from the phone to the gmail account. Is there any way to sync the pictures too, or at least to back them up somewhere so that if I flash a new rom, I can get back my contact pictures without having to manually reassign all of them?
Also, is there a way to backup the Facebook contact links (the ones I had to assign manually) so that I don't have to assign them all again after I flash?
Thanks!
as the big guys say... search http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876190

Contacts sync with google doesn't seem to be working

I have sync enabled with my google account. I can get my gmail contacts on my phone. However, I do not see my phone contacts when I go to my gmail account.
What am I doing wrong? My contacts from my phone should show up in my gmail contacts right?

See if this helps. When in Contacts, tap the (hardware key) Menu and tap Display options. See if Phone and/or Sim is checked. That toggles the display of additional contacts saved in the Phone and SIM memory.
Scratch that. I think you want your phone and/or SIM contacts to show up in your Google Account on your PC right? I don't know how to do that... Sorry, I'm not so helpful after all.

in my contacts, on the phone, I see some contacts that have a "g" next to them. These equate to the ones on my gmail account's contact list. Most of them do not display the "g" though.

You're right, I want all of my On-Phone contacts to be sync'd into my Gmail.com contacts list on my pc. and any help is helpful
Your phone\sim contacts will not automatically move to google's contacts online. You have to move them manually. Here is what I did to move my contacts up there:
1. In contacts, under settings, go to Display Options and uncheck the option to show your google contacts. You will turn this back on later. For now, you just need to see the contacts that you want to move to Google.
2. Under settings, go to More and then Import\Export. Then choose to export to SD card. This will create a file on your SD card with your contacts in it. Make note of the location of the file. It will likely be the sd folder and a file called 00001.vcf
3. Exit the contacts app and go to the my files application. Find the file from step #2 and long press it. In the menu that comes up, select Share and then email it to yourself.
4. Now you should be able to get to the file on your computer by downloading it from your email.
(Alternatively if your phone is hooked up to your computer you could just find the file on it and copy it to your computer)
5. Go to google.com/contacts and import the vcf file. They will now be on Google and if you have contact sync on they will get pushed to your phone. I had some duplication between names on my phone and names I had in google so I had to spend some time merging and cleaning them up.
6. In the contacts app on your phone, undo what you did in step #1 by going to display options and checking Google. You will now see all of those contacts with a "g" beside them.
Note - this does mean that your contacts will show multiple times on your phone if your display options have it showing Phone, SIM, and google contacts. I ended up going in and removing all contacts from my phone and SIM card to resolve this. The captivate does try to link similar contacts together it may not bother you. I just decided I wanted all of my contacts in one place and nowhere else.
d'oh you beat me to it. I was doing a test myself to see if it works. It sure does and when I was about to post the instructions, there it was, yours. I couldn't have done a better job.
Nice! This will work.
However, I am quite disappointed that I can't just sync my phone contacts to my google account. It's one of the things I miss coming from WinMo using Microsoft MyPhone.
... you would figure with everything this phone does a simple task such as synching with your gmail account would be a no-brainer in the droid world.
Well.. nothing is perfect.
Thanks for this! I was looking for a way to do it and couldn't figure it out but never got around to asking
Yeah I agree, its kinda bs that they won't just sync. I use "uia back contacts" from the market. Works great with dropbox.

I know this is old topic, but I have a question about the procedure described previously for getting contacts into google...
What about in the future...if I add a new contact on the phone, will it then automatically sync up to google, or do I have to do this whole process again?

[Q] Looking for App to sort Contacts

Hi Guys,
i got a serious problem, i synced my contacts with google, now i got the problem, that i got every number like 5 times (all the same nr.) @ the contact list.
This is pretty annoying, because of this issue i got around ~4000 contacts saved..
Is there any app or so, that lets me just check/uncheck the contacts i want to delete so i can easily resort my contact list.
All the apps i found so far are only able to delete a single contact per task.
Thats a bit awful with ~4k contacts, thats why i ask you now
thx in Advance
Syther
Hey
really no one?
Bump ^^
thx in advance !
I'm calling shenanigans on the 4000. I just manually deleted my contacts. I found a multiple select contacts app so I could batch delete contacts.

Simple steps: make sure all your contacts are on Google, wipe data, login to Google, fixed!

Hello Guys,
thx for the responses.
I already did several wipes (installed different builds) but google automatically syncs all ~4k contacts to my mobile phone.
Maybe someone had this problem too and could solve it easier then delete every single contact alone.
regards

I had the same issue as you, syther.
I didn't think about looking for an app that would do that.
1) Go online (using GMail) to the Google account your phone is linked to.
2) On the left there should be a button called "contacts."
3) Click it and it should bring you to all your contacts that are synced to it.
4) Click the "more actions" button and go to "find & merge duplicates."
It won't merge all of the duplicates, but it'll merge most of the ones you have hopefully.
An example of a contact not merging would be
Joe-Bob (555-555-5555) and Joe-Bob (+1555-555-5555)
For that scenario I just went and deleted it manually through GMail to ensure it will never sync those contacts again.
Hopefully that will lessen the burden of deleting your contacts manually.

you will also want to create groups in Google's contacts. What you may have happening is the ton of random one time emial addresses that got saved.
I've created a "main" group that only has legitimate contacts and haven't had any issues since.
You can also export all of the contacts out of Google into a .csv file that you can open in excel and fix to your hearts desire.
Thank you !
I couldĀ“ve come on that idea on my on lol - most time, the simplest things you cant find hehe
awesome i solved it through gmail directly really thank you people!

[Q] I really want help with my contacts.

Now I have three joined contacts for each contact. One is Google, the others are two phones. Each phone number has two numbers (from importing my contacts, apparently), one with dashes and one without. When I send a text message manually, it displays everyone's name three times - annoying since the text message display window is 3 panes long, so it is absolutely ruined.
I have NO IDEA how to do this anymore. How do I clear my contacts? How do I restart this whole nonsense? All I want is one contact. It always pulls my SIM contacts, as one. It pulls my Google contacts, as another. When I import/export them to my phone, that's a third. Why is Android so backwards!? Is there ANY solution to this? Does ANYONE know anything? Can someone PLEASE help!
Seriously, is this a section of XDA I should even be bothering with? No one seems to have any advice for this. Or even reply with a "this bothers me too" post!
Had same problem. 8of the same contacts linked. Goto Google account -contacts and select merge.
It should merge duplicates

Edit: you can either use card to back up.ie manually.or use Google for all.for card i suggest unchecking Google backup or same problem will occur. I'd just do Google for contacts
Any luck?

[Q] Nexus 5 won't sync gmail contacts?

Hi All,
I tried to find something similar but to the best of my searching abilities, nobody seems to be having the same issue.
I've been using an HTC One (a GNex before that) for the last few months. When I got it, like my other previous Android phones, at the initial setup it pulled down all of my contacts.
When I set up my N5, however, the contact list was the last one from my GNex! The hundreds of new contacts since then are not on the new phone. It's enough to make me want to just sell the phone instead of going through each contact individually.
On my HTC one in the People app it shows 494 contacts under my gmail address, and last sync was a few minutes ago. On the N5 I don't get the same screen, but I have a total of 123 people in the app, and it shows that it has synced with my gmail.
Does anyone know what's going on here, and how to get my contacts onto the N5?
Thanks!
You probably saved your new contacts on the htc on the phone not on google...
Change them to google or export them all and import into google.
ALSO, make sure you had the htc one set to sync contacts...settings..accounts...google...click on your email..

My contacts are saved to Google. In my People app on the HTC, When I click to choose source, "Google (my email)" is selected, with 495 contacts.
As I said in the original post, everything is synced, and the last sync was a few minutes before the post.
I tried the export and import but all that did was double the number of contacts under my Google account (gmail address).
Is there anything else I can try?
I am currently using an iPhone 4 and the idiots at Apple have removed the option to export contacts to Google in their iTunes program... SO now I have installed a little app called Bump, that should help me transfer all my contacts to the new Nexus 5 when i get it. You can try it with your two phones if you like. Seems pretty simple, however i have never used it yet...
Here is a link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bumptech.bumpga&hl=en
well if what you said is true, you should be in the htc one forum, not the nexus 5. Apparently your htc is what messed up.
I really have to go with user error here, its pretty basic stuff. I highly doubt your htc one failed to sync contacts even though it was set to sync google contacts...if so..you are the "one."
I know that sounds rude, but, really.....its basic stuff here.
GOOGLE how to backup contacts and restore them on an android phone, unless you want your hand held here.
Hey whatever happened to the OP's problem ? Did he/she fix it ? I have recently transferred all my contact from my iPhone to my new N5 with absolutely no problems with this app. I can confirm it works like a charm and totally recommend it. It takes less then 10 seconds to complete everything. The actual transfer took like 1 second !!!
I have a similar issue.
I too am coming from an HTC One, but I don't think that's the problem in my case. I've logged into my Nexus 5 using my Google credentials, but none of my Google contacts are appearing. I checked my contacts list in Gmail from my laptop to be sure, and all my contacts are there. I went back to my Nexus 5 and manually synced contacts in the settings, but nothing changed; my contacts are still not showing up.
I would love to know if anyone has found a resolution to this issue.
Have you made sure that "Auto-sync app data" is checked off,
"All contacts" is selected in Contacts to display,
and "Contacts" is checked off in your Gmail sync account.
Are you using a corporate Google account? You may need to ask your administrator for help.
Did you log into http://contacts.google.com and see if they are shown there? If so they must also be in My Contacts which the HTC might not be setting. Also on your phone, check settings and then check if they are in another folder just not being displayed.
