How to Unroot Your Phone if Using Unrevoked 3

So, I had some trouble unrooting my Evo 4G today because I wanted to bring my phone in for a replacement. It's been awhile since I last rooted the device so I figured I could just download the appropriate zip files and get on with it. I ran into a few snags.
A little background of the phone:
-Rooted via Unrevoked 3
-Running the latest Radio 2.15.00.05.02
-S-OFF
So, this method works if you rooted your phone via Unrevoked3 or Unrevoked Forever. I was reading all over and many people flashed to sense ROMs and did many steps that weren't really needed. The way I did was very simple.
**If you did not root your phone via Unrevoked skip to Step 7.
1. Downgrade your Radio to 2.15.00.07.28 (Anything earlier than the previous update should work) at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=7154 All the radios should be located at the previous link.
2. Download the Unrevoked Forever S-ON zip file that is provided.
3. Move the S-ON zip file to the root of your SD card.
4. Flash the zip file so that your device now reads S-ON, NOT S-OFF.
5. Wipe Cache, Dalvik Cache, and Data.
6. Reboot into Bootloader and verify that you are now S-ON.
7. Download the PC36IMG.zip from http://www.4shared.com/file/5U4M4eVi/PC36IMG.html?cau2=403tNull
8. Move the PC36IMG zip file to the root of your SD card.
9. Reboot into Bootloader and the phone should recognize the PC36IMG and begin to finish the UNROOT process.
10. Follow on-screen instructions and apply the update and reboot the phone.
11. You are now UNROOTED!!!
I hope this little tutorial helped. It definitely is nice to finally unroot the device after all the problems I was running into.

Unroot for repair
Just in case anyone doing this for the first time, I recently took my evo in and exchanged for another. Make sure you remove all evidence of root from your sd card i.e. root explorer, my back up root TI(any root programs) and get the pc36img off there too. Now depending how cool your Sprint techs are they might not care. My particular store said they would blacklist my phone if they suspected it of root. That will ruin your plans of getting any service in the future, let alone the reason you came in. Their little "diagnostics" term to me says,"Let me check if I am going to dash your hopes of repair today." Or to be safer you could just pull the sd. Hopefully if you do forget you have cool techs that appreciate what we do here.

Just a heads up, the radio link is broken. I've been using the same one as well in my bookmarks. That thread is apparently no longer there?

when i try to flash the radio is comes up with a message saying something about "it was necessary to remove it when upgrading to the CWM 3.0 gingerbread based recovery, please switch to edify scripting" do i have to downgrade my CWM?

I'll give this process a 7 on the pucker scale, but it does work
I downgraded my cm image before I started just so I wouldn't have to deal with any errors
I then flashed the 2.15.00.07.28 radio
then flashed the s-on tool
then applied the pc36img.zip in bootloader
took a while but I am back up, and running unrooted

Actually, after flashing the PC36IMG, that removes the root and puts the phone back to the initial state. It does put the phone to S-ON and remove SuperUser.

If you do take it in do not let them update anything. I even signed a paper saying I didn't want a hard reset.

Will this wipe all my contacts, messages, and apps? What app should I use to back everything up (Mybackup Pro, or Titanium Backup)?

Yes you will lose everything. Google should save your contacts to the cloud. Any installed apps can be redownloaded. You will lose any saved messages/text/etc.
Keep in mind "S-OFF" and having root privileges are two different things. You can be rooted and be S-ON, and S-OFF and not rooted (which would mean you flashed a ROM that didn't have the su binary which almost doesn't exist outside of stock).

Why is it necessary to downgrade the radio? Just curious. Mine is currently running 2.15.00.11.19.
Question two... is that PC36IMG linked the stock 2.3.3?

2) Using ROM Manager (or manually) Flash Alternative [Recovery] [09-Feb-2011] RA-supersonic-v2.3
To be able to use CWM nandroids in Amon_RA's Recovery you need to:
1) Make a folder on the root of your SD Card called Nandroid
2) Create a Nandroid using Amon_RA
3) Amon_RA will create another folder inside Nandroid
4) Place your nandroid that you made in CMW inside the folder that Amon_RA creates along with that nandroid too

I used these instructions but in a different way.
1) I downgraded the radio. I still don't know why, it wasn't stated, but I went ahead and did it.
2) I downloaded the new radio and the unrevoked s-on tool (since I used unrevoked to root this phone in the first place)
3) I copied both the radio and s-on to my sd card while Evo was plugged into my PC via Disk Storage
4) On Amon's 2.3 recovery, I flashed the radio, let it do its thing and reboot and do its next lil thing it wants to do
5) Flashed the s-on. After it was done, I went back to the main menu of Amon's recovery and selected power off
6) Holding VOL+D and power, booted into the bootloader and saw it was S-ON.
7) Went through hboot to boot into recovery, then power off
8) Pulled battery to get to the sd card and put it into my PC so I could copy the PC36IMG.zip to it. Im really not convinced that its a big deal to copy this zip along with the radio and unrevoked s-on tool at the same time, except that it might idiot-proof flashing the pc36img prematurely. Then again, the instructions state to move it to the sd card...how? It can be done over ADB but theres not instructions given.
9) Put Sd card with PC36img copied to it onto the Evo, held VOL+D and power, booted into bootloader, it found PC36img, applied update and rebooted.

I think that the reason why you need an older radio is because if they saw that you had the newest radio released w/ the 2.3.3 and your on 2.2 it might look a little funny... this is my educated guess

well when sprint released the latest OTA its a packaged deal you get all of the stuff (radio hboot PRI/NV ect.) well if you only have 1 of the many different things like the latest radio but not the latest hboot or w/e then i would assume that the phone has been rooted. so you wouldnt want the 4.24 software update and have all of the older firmware... im really not too sure and i could be wrong but this would seem pretty logic (to me)
oh and flashing the 2.3.3 image would render it unrootable

To answer your first question, after doing my research and by trial and error, I ran into several errors and problems having the latest radios and HBOOT. The alternative to fix this problem was to downgrade the radio.
The reason why it's easier to move the PC36IMG after you are S-ON is to make sure that you do not make the mistake of updating prematurely. Mistakes can happen and if you move too fast, accidents may happen. This was done to insure that needless accidents don't happen. The way you move the file to the SD card is by enabling USB mode while in recovery mode (Amon RA and Clockwork). The disk drive appears on your computer, and you click and drag the files just like normal.
The PC36IMG contains Android 2.2

[Q] Is ACE Hack kit for the phone laready S-OFF and unlocked ?

I just got a new unlocked HTC inspire 4G ( at back of the phone printed AT&T)
I checked this phone has S-OFF at Hboot screen. The phone not rooted yet.
The start up screen still see the AT&T logo
I read the ACE kit regarding
"Please do NOT run the hack step if you are already S-OFF and are running a custom ROM. It's pointless, and while it won't brick you, you can get jammed up a bit. This is for stock devices only."
Is anyone can help me to see if I can run the latest ACE Hack kit?

As you quoted there is no need to use the hack kit. You already have soff, so there is no point. What most likely happens was the phone was just flashed with the ruu, and sold to you. You have a few options. You can flash a prerooted stock rom through hboot. Or Flash clockwordmod through hboot then flash a custom rom

What is RUU?
What is prerooted stock? is the PD98img.zip preroot stock?

Ruu. Is rom update utility. Basically these are used to return the phone software back to original stock. As if they came.out of the factory. Prerooted stock is as it sounds it's a stock rom, what your phone normally runs but has the added benefit of already having root built in, with super user access.
The pd98 that I linked to is a prerooted stock.

The smaller one is just clockworkmod recovery. While the bigger one is the prerooted rom.
Yeah you rename to PD98IMG. Make sure its in the root of SD card(not in a folder) and flash in hboot.
After you have a clockworkmod recovery you can back up your rom.
What happends after you flash depends on which on you decide to do. If you just flash the recovery then after it rebooted you'll have your current rom untouched, but now you'll be able to flash a custom rom if you so choose. If you flash the rom, then you'll end up with a clean slate of stock rom but rooted,you'll have to really sign in and set your phone back up

Nothing to be sorry about. We are started at the same place. I'm more than happy to help out.
You are correct on all counts except that having clockwordmod does not mean you are rooted. Generally the goal is to be rooted and have cwr. But once you have cwr you can back up your current rom.
What I ment by resigning in and setting up your phone,is think of it when you first. Got the phone. Had to sign into gmail, and setup some of your apps and settings. Google will backup and restore quite a bit but not everything. Many people use titanium backup to do that for them, but it can only be used once your rooted. So in your case after you flash a custom rom.
As two checking the md5checksum, you can use any program you like. I usually flash my files straight from my phone so I use the app android file verifier

First time Flashing ROM with scare:
1-Do not unpack/unzip the ROM
2-Copy the ROM to the root of your sd card (Root= not in a folder)
3-And rename it to PD98IMG.zip
4-Check PD98IMG.zip file’s MD5checksum
5-Boot your phone into recovery by booting into h-boot ( turn fastboot off ) then turn your phone off and turn it back on pressing both power+volume down, until the h-boot menu appears. Use the volume buttons to scroll down to recovery then press power to select.)
6-Using the volume buttons scroll down to down to wipe data/factory reset. (unless you are upgrading, (THIS STEP IS NOT OPTIONAL!)-Press the power button to select.
7-Use the volume buttons to scroll down to YES-- delete all user data, use the power button to select.
8-Scroll down to Advanced press power to select.
9-Scroll to Wipe Dalvik Cache press power to select.
10-Go down to Yes-- Wipe Dalvik Cache use the power button to select.
11-Select go back
12-Go to Install zip from sdcard and select it using the power button.
13-Select choose zip from sdcard.
14-Scroll down and find the ROM you wish to flash press the power button to select it.
15-Select Yes - Install (roms name)
-You are now flashing a rom!
-Once the rom has finished flashing select reboot system now.

Not quite, that's the method for flashing roms roms through recovery.
We are flashing a pd98img, so the procedure is different as its flashed through hboot.
1) place file into root of SD card(not in a folder)
2) rename to PD98IMG.zip(very important has to be exact. Caps matter. Make sure when renaming you don't accidently add an extra zip ie pd98img.zip.zip
2.5) verify md5checksum
3) make sure fastboot is turned off in settings. And boot into hboot- power off phone. While holding volume down press power button.
4) it will automatically scan for the file and prompt you to update. Say yes.
5)make a sammich?
6) after it reboots download rom manager and install clockworkmod.

I want to install Flash clockwordmod, I want to back up the current rom on SD card just in case any happen so I can come back to current state. If yes, How to?
I am little worry if the unlock will became lock to AT&T by flash to unsigned PD98IMG .

I know it did not have the benefit on current the ROM in the cell phone but I just feel safe if I back up something I have, just in case something go wrong.

Bummer, I just found out the guy sold the phone from Amazone to me, steal SD card from the phone, I just order from Newegg now.

It run good now and I see a superuser icon on the Application.

[Q] [URGENT!] Bootlooping due to flash wrong PG58IMG

Hi all,
I have a problem with my Sensation due to my own fault.
I want to flash ARHD ICS rom to my phone, and I started with rooting my Sensation. I followed all instruction til installing the Recovery (PG58IMG).
I downloaded two versions of PG58IMG (one for ICS and one for the other), but I copied the firmware for ICS version to my SD card and already installed it. Now, my phone already S-off but cannot reboot into homescreen. It keeps rebooting it self in white hTC screen (after I installed the ICS firmware).
I don't know how to fix. I tried to read the troubleshoot in the post but I still cannot fix it. Does anyone have a solution??

I want to flash ARHD ICS rom to my phone, and I started with rooting my Sensation. I followed all instruction til installing the Recovery (PG58IMG).
I downloaded two versions of PG58IMG (one for ICS and one for the other), but I copied the firmware for ICS version to my SD card and already installed it. Now, my phone already S-off but cannot reboot into homescreen. It keeps rebooting it self in white hTC screen (after I installed the ICS firmware).
I don't know how to fix. I tried to read the troubleshoot in the post but I still cannot fix it. Does anyone have a solution??

If I understand you correctly you flashed the firmware upgrade BEFORE you flashed the new ICS rom? If so you'll need to get your sdcard card out (and get your computer to read it) so you can rename the PG85img on your sdcard so you can get back into recovery so you can flash the new ICS rom.

Yes, I flashed the upgraded firmware before not only I flashed ICS rom, but also I get rooted. Now, I can't flash any rom as well as su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip or su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip.
It still keep bootlooping. I tried to flash the other firmware, but it showed 'CID incorrect'. I don't know how to fix now

Did you check MD5 Sums before you flashed the ROM because it sounds like a bad download so re-download the ROM and reflash

I did check MD5 sums for all files I downloaded and it is corrected.
Now, I'm curious that whether it is possible to flash the upgraded firmware before being rooted.

And of course you need to be using the right version of the firmware for the rom you want to flash. Mike's latest uses 3.24 per here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
I don't know if you can get into fastboot or not, but you should be able to check the CID of your phone there, and download the right firmware for your phone. If your phone is carrier independent (i.e. didn't get on contract) then the HTC__xxx variety should be good.

Thank you so much for your link. I can boot my Sensation into the homescreen now. For my problem, I have to download and flash the older version (3.17) to fix it.

Just flash the Mod, the bootloop is normal.
I got the same problem, before i flashed Revolution Rom i used that radio package. After the radio package flash, my phone wass stuck in a bootloop.
I took the memory card out en removed the zip file en flashed the revolution rom. After that my phone started normal.

so i just deleated everything and restored back to origional backup rom.
so what did i do wrong?

Cool. The answer is yes of course. The firmware file contains a specific radio / hboot / etc version. The ROM you download and install is dependent on certain combinations of the firmware versions you have. The super cid just allows you to flash any of the firmwares available here... Otherwise you have to find the specific one for your region and/or carrier.
Also, don't forget you can use an adb logcat while your phone is booting to see if you can diagnose any boot-looping issues. Just run that command on your PC with your phone attached via USB cable

To do so,
1. Download the correct firmware version ( PG58IMG.zip V3.24 ) and copy it to the root of your SDCARD.
Be 200% sure that the downloaded zip file is not corrupted. ( Check the MD5 checksum after you download)
2. Pull Back the battery and wait for a minute.
3. Put the battery and press POWER+VOLUME Down Key together.
4. Your phone will detect the firmware.
5. Follow the screen and complete the flashing.
6. Download the ICS based ROM of your favor.
7. Boot into recovery and flash your rom.

No you didn't do everything the thread said to do because you're stuck in a bootloop. And yes, you must have correct firmware to run any ICS ROM.
1. SuperCID.
2. Load correct firmware for ROM version you wish to flash (there are 3 different firmwares, 3.06, 3.12 and 3.24. Make sure you've got the right one.
Put PG58IMG.zip on the root of your damn SD card.
Put the ROM you want on the root of your damn SD card.
Put a wipe or superwipe script on the root of your damn SD card.
So far it's easy, no?
Boot to bootloader, select FASTBOOT, select yes to update.
Watch the phone. You should see it flash some partitions, reboot itself, then flash the radio and some other crap.
When done you should be at correct HBOOT and radio.
Now, pull the battery. Pull the SD card.
Insert the battery. Start the phone with power + Volume down.
Move cursor to recovery.
Insert SD card and select recovery.
Flash the wipe script, flash the ROM.
Now if you did everything exactly like this, you will boot to normal phone in about 10 minutes or so.
This has been spelled out 50 times in 50 threads, including threads devoted to nothing but this procedure.
Your phone is a machine. It can only do what you tell it to do. If you screw up, it's screwed up. If you do everything exactly right, in the right order, carefully checking each step, your phone will behave.
Try again.
Do it right. Do it carefully.

its my first time and im afraid to brick my phone
anyway now im with custom rom and want to go back to stock to receive ota updates.
my phone is rooted and s-off i want to stay s-off with stock rom.
1. is it possible ?
2. will i need to wipe data before the flash?
3. backup needed ?
4. will i get ota updates with stock rom s-off?
5. the ruu is europe 1.47 do i need it to match to my software/radio/hboot?

Since you want to stay s-off and a stock rom then....
1) Yes if you don't want need OTA. No if you want ota

3) If you want to restore your apps/data yes, google SHOULD be okay with contacts/calendar
4) Dont be silly, really, DONT TRY STOCK THINGS ON ALTERED PHONES, thats common sense (at least it should be)
5) You will not use a RUU, you wil use a pre rooted stock rom from the development forum
However, if you want to get ota updates you will need to go s-on and use a RUU, I suggest just getting the latest RUU
My suggesttion, rather leave your phone as is and install a stock pre rooted rom, you can always install the latest stock rom when the OTA is released and its made into a prerooted rom.

@yonigo870 flashing a ruu can actually force you into a bootloop if you flash the wrong RUU the best wasy to get to stock is to flash a pre-rooted stock ROM

here is a few guides to help with that question i don't know anything about rom manager sorry i use 4ext touch recovery
Custom ROMS:
Custom roms can be found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1146601 or head to the development section.
(Most of these ROMs are pre-rooted, which means that you don't need to root your phone after flashing one of the custom ROM.)
How To: Flash Custom ROMs using Recovery (Method 1)
(You can use your default recovery from Revolutionary tool but I recommend using 4EXTRecovery)
1. Copy your custom ROM "zip" file to your SD card (Root directory).
2. Turn off your phone.
3. Turn on your phone by holding the power button and the volume down button together.
4. Once you see the white screen, choose "Recovery"
5. Make a full wipe/format and clear all cache.
6. Choose "install from sdcard/zip file" and then choose your Custom ROM zip file from your SD card to flash your Custom ROM.
Optional: If you want to use 4EXTRecovery, just flash it like you are flashing your custom ROM(Step 6). Just do it before you flash your new ROM.
How To: Flash Custom ROMs using ROM Manager (Method 2)
(This method might be easier for flashing ROM updates or add-ons)
1. Go to ROM Manager (You can install this software from the Android Market.)
2. If you want to use 4EXTRecovery, please follow steps below, and if you're not using 4EXTRecovery, please skip to step 6)
3. Press your phone's option's button and choose Manual Flash Override.
4. Press OK and choose your phone model.
5. Choose ClockworkMod 3.x (After these steps, your ROM Manager won't ask you to flash new recovery again when flashing new a ROM)
6. Reboot into Recovery and make a full wipe/format and clear all cache then reboot.
7. Now, from your ROM Manager, choose Install ROM from SD Card.
Note: Flashing ROMs can be vary, some custom ROMs may require you to flash some of their own file first. Eg, The LBC Mod ROM requires you to flash "WIPE zip file" before flashing the ROM. Read their instructions carefully to know more.
NOTE: I am not responsible for any faulty or bricked devices after S-OFF or flashing new ROMs. Do it at your own risk.
How To: Flash a ROM in a "Perfect" Way (Method 3 - Recommended)
A great guide from vampire36 for people who encounter the following problems:
1. The ROM you flashed gets stuck on HTC screen (bootloop) while the same ROM works right for others
2. You get the same kernel and radio yet you find your cell to have more battery drain than others
3. Finally some strange force closes and restarts but works perfect for others
So this is basically one of the most perfect way to flash a custom ROM and is a way to help people who face such issues.

You can enter a boot-loop but I've flashed ROMs too many times to remember (stock & MOD) and never truly boot-looped. You may soft-brick your phone however, but with remedy. Rooting phones & flashing ROMs isn't for the faint-hearted. My phone was dead for almost 48 hours (within 24 hours of purchase). That's how I joined XDA.
Scary. Turned out it wasn't hopeless. Within an hour of Temp Root, I had self-styled flashed CWM Recovery (haven't run into the gung-ho method I crafted yet, at least on these forums), proceeded to acquire Permanent Root afterwards and within the week had flashed 4 ROMs. Invented a few tricks myself .
Point is you have to get your hands dirty. That's why you bought the darn phone in the first place! Pull your gloves & get those hands dirty!

yes i've flashed many roms also and have never encountered a boot-loop the only time i got a boot-loop was when i flashed the wrong RUU in the past 48 hours i've changed roms about 20 times

after flashing rom the phone made updates from the market by himself, and now im restoring via titanium and seems like everything is ok...
after that titanium asked me to reboot, and so i did.
again thanks a lot for the support and for the help !!!!!!!!

problem !!! the rosie utility stopped unexpectedly...
htc widgets (like clock and weather) not working after restoring with titanium!
maybe its since the backup was on sense 2.1 and now its 3.0
how can make the htc widgets work ???

reboot back into recovery and fix permissions i dont know if you can do that in titanium

[Q] Help Flashing ROM

Thanks for your help and time in advance. I am trying to flash a ROM to my At&T HTC One X. It is HBOOT 1.14 running ics 2.20. I am specifically trying to flash ViperXL and have failed about 3 times so far. I keep getting my phone stuck in a boot loop. It is no longer in a boot loop because I have flashed the factory ROM. My phone is rooted and I have TWRP as my recovery. I have some specific questions to ask:
1) What version of ViperXL should I use? I think I might be trying to flash the wrong version.
2) Do I leave the entire file zipped when I put it on my sd card or do I specifically extract the boot.img file and keep that file separate from the zip file?
3) If I have Flash Image GUI from the playstore should I use that to flash it? If so do I still follow step 2 above?
This is what I have been doing so far:
1) Downloading this file: ViperXL 3.2.1 - Android File Host (685MB) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1868236
2) Using WInRar to extract its contents and move it to my sd card.
3) Using Flash Image GUI to select boot.img and then pressing flash.
4) Rebooting my phone and then wa-la, boot loop. I have actually been following a youtube video on how to do it but I'm not getting no luck.
If there is an easier way please inform me. I am a noob but love this stuff. Please be specific with instructions so I can enjoy an awesome custom ROM.

wipe cache dalvik system and factory reset in recovery
fastboot flash boot boot.img or use the gui to flash the boot.img extracted from the viper rom
install the viper rom within recovery.
read more before you end up with a brick.
it says all this right in the second post of the viper thread
"Download the ViperXL 3.0.0 from the download section
Confirm the md5 checksum is correct on both files (it will be noted on the dl page)
Place the file somewhere on your phone storage
Reboot to TWRP recovery
Backup current ROM
Install ROM using twrp and select wipe during aroma install if coming from another base
If you have 1.14 hboot you will need to flash the boot.img in fastboot. You will need to extract this from the ROM zip. I have found the following tool useful: [TOOL] HTC Auto Boot.img Installer (One Click Tool)
Reboot and Enjoy"

All Flash Image GUI does is flash the boot.img, which is a small part of the overall ROM. You also need to have the entire ROM zip on your SD card. Boot into bootloader, then go into TWRP recovery. Once in TWRP, go to Wipe, do a factory reset (do not factory reset in bootloader, as it will corrupt your SD memory), wipe Dalvik, wipe cache. Then select Install, and navigate to the ROM zip. The ROM will begin to install. AROMA will then launch, giving you a variety of install options specific to ViperXL. Go through the AROMA options. Then when the ROM install is complete, TWRP will give you the option to reboot. Reboot and enjoy.

Do not extract rom lol. Flash it as is!

Wow how did you figure this out? I now know why my sd corrupted on me once. I did click that once in my life. In fact it put me i have the "soft brick and gonna cry" category, complete with post in q&a.
There needs to be a sticky for things like this.. Little nuggets of knowledge.
The sticky should also contain the factory recovery.
And then the sticky should be mandatory before you are allowed to download roms, recoveries, etc. It would save headache for many.

Agreed. I too fall into the category of accidently bootloader factory resetting and almost dieing lol

it has been stated not to factory reset in bootloader, i have posted it probably almost 100 times. i'm glad this thread is finally over it was making me itch and twitch.

Its a fairly common mistake, and as DvineLord stated, it been discussed quite a bit in various places.
