1) You must be rooted. (You've done this)
2) If you have a /Voodoo folder on your internal SD card, delete it and reboot. (dont have a custom rom so dont worry about this)
3) If you're already running a custom ROM with Voodoo lagfix FULLY enabled, you can skip to step 7. (dont skip to 7)
4) Download CWM-community-kernel-v8.zip if you're on Froyo or CWM-infused-v2.0.1-kernel.zip if you're on Gingerbread and place it on your internal SD card. ( Download the CWM-community one since you are on Froyo, put it on your sd card)
5) Install SGS Kernel Flasher from the Market. (open market and find it)
6) Open SGS Kernel Flasher, select choose kernel, select the file you downloaded, and select flash kernel. Your phone will reboot and begin to enable Voodoo lagfix. Let it do that and boot all the way up. It will take a while (5-10 minutes) because it's converting all partitions to ext4. (open SGS and choose kernel, you may have to go back a file, and select Sd card, look for zip file)
7) If you're on Froyo, you must now install a file explorer like Root Explorer from the Market and use it to delete the file /system/bin/recovery. You will need to hit the "Mount R/W" button in Root Explorer before it will let you delete it. I can't stress this enough... you MUST MUST MUST delete that file before continuing or else you will get boot loops! (do as it says, cant explain it better)
8) Now install ROM Manager from the Market and open it.(Find ROM manager in market)
9) Select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and choose "Galaxy S i9000". (open ROM manager, select Flash clockworkmod Recovery, choose the i1900 file.)
10) Now go to "Download ROM", select my section (gtg465x), select the latest Infused V2 release, and hit the download button. (In ROM manager find Download ROM, select gtg465x. and select 2.2.3, hit download)
11) At the "Installation Type" prompt, select full. (do as it says)
12) Select the addons you wish to install and then wait for ROM Manager to download the ROM. There is a note at the bottom of this post about which addons are not compatible with each other. (do as it says)
13) When you get to the "ROM Pre-Installation" prompt, you MUST check "Wipe Data and Cache" unless you're coming from Infused V2 BETA 1. (select Wipe data can Cache)
14) Press OK. Your phone will reboot and automatically install the ROM. Just sit back and relax. (BAM)

Ok i think i pretty much got it, but i dont know what you mean by flashing it... do you use the kernal flasher that i was supposed to download?and then the file that i have to put in the internal sd card... do i just put it on like anywhere? like where the folders all are? like the folder voodoo was in?
And last thing, what rom manager should i use? does it matter?
sorry i know the flashing thing now,i just use the kernal flasher, but number 7, do i just skip that step? it says if im on froyo which i'm not... but i just went to move the file over, but do i put the whole zip over or what do i do?

It sounds like you may be in stock recovery. We have to use a bootstrapped recovery called openrecovery. After you have installed openrecovery you get to it by holding the volume up key during a normal boot.

Reading your post, I think there is a step that was missed. Did you extract the openrecovery.zip? The extracted contents are what is in this folder sdcard/openrecovery.
Do you have this set up on your SD card?
Sdcard/openrecovery.zip
sdcard/openrecovery
sdcard/nandroid/openrecovery/<your ROM you want to restore>
**No spaces between**
Go to this thread and download and unzip this recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1242259) This is what we are all using now b/c of the customization that MZ put into it. Follow the directions.
Yes yes yes yes!!! U were right i missed tht step i got it working Thank u thank u
interesting...
Here is one more problem. I have installed this rom now after installation of this ROM i m getting an Error PLMN failed.
Check you APNs but IIRC the PLMN error didn't really matter. I saw it on Hellmonger's ROM. Might want to ask Linertymonger, I think he had a fix for that.
Hi,
I have a UK Milestone with stock Froyo rooted.
I followed all the steps (flash SBF, install open recovery, etc) but when I get to the part where I'm in the Open Recovery menu and select "Apply updates", all I get is a "go back" option, even though the proper CM7 zip file is in the SD Card's root.
So what could I be doing wrong?
Can I just try it with CWM, as it worked flawlessly with my Defy and Advent Vega?
Thanks for your help.
You need to put update zip with CM7 to /sdcard/OpenRecovery/updates folder, not to root of your sd card.
Don't use CWM on Milestone - it is not 100% compatible with that device.
the CM7 zip file should be on the OpenRecovery/updates folder, not on root. Then, when you go to the Apply updates option, the update.zip file for CM7 should show up on the list. Just select it and go ahead.
And no, don't ever try CWM on the Milestone, it won't work.
Gosh, how could I have missed that within the installation guide?
Thanks, guys.
I rooted my phone (nexus s i9020a at&t) and have superuser and downloaded rom manager. I had no idea how to figure out how to flash a rom onto my device on my mac so I downloaded one of the many cyanogen mod 9's directly in rom manager. The rom loaded up perfectly and runs smoothly except there is no app market. When I try to go back into rom manager it force quits out.
I am very new to rooting and hacking into my phone and tried searching for hours and can't figure out what to do. If anyone knows how I can just flash a new updated version of cyanogen mod 9 without using rom manager that would be awesome. I really just need a step by step way to do it on the mac because every time someone posts a rom .zip file it downloads as a folder with random stuff in it and in recovery mode in my phone I don't know how to go about flashing it. So confused. Any help would be so appreciated.

cm9 issue
thanks did you get my replies to your pm? i can't figure this out haha
download cm9 and the gapps add-on(with your phone) in the first post of the cm9 thread. boot into recovery, fimd your rom and gapps files, flash cm9 there, then flash the gapps(google apps), then reboot. you do not need rom manager.
Hmm cm9 does not come pre loaded with android app market so u will have to download the latest gapps from other posts in this forum... then copy it into ur phone from ur computer...then after going to cwm recovery use the volume up down buttons to scroll and the power button to choose...u will have to remember where u pasted the gapps file and u will have to navigate to it ...choose the gapps file and scroll down to yes to flash it then go back and reboot...that's it u will now have google apps in ur nexus s...Remember u do not need to open the downloaded gapps zip file as there is nothing u can do by opening it...good luck and happy flashing...

Often, folks ask how to root the Samsung UCLB3 leak or how to root the official AT&T Gingerbread release for the Infuse 4G (both are one and the same at the time of writing this). This how-to explains how to do this.
Note that this also works for rooting the earlier UCL** and UCK** leaks.
Easiest option - flash a rom that is already rooted.:
An easy option is to flash this Odin tar.md5 that I put together. It flashes stock UCLB3 with root already installed.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
Another easy option, if you already have cwm recovery, is to download and flash this version.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508619
And another easy option from qkster to get UCLB3 + cwm recovery in a Heimdall One-Click package.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
Another easy option - do it yourself.:
Another easy option is to flash one of the custom Gingerbread kernels with CWM recovery from here. This won't wipe your current OS, data, or apps.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27123262
Download and place this file on your internal sdcard.:
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Then, put your phone in recovery mode. Shut phone off. Hold down power button and both volume buttons, and once the Samsung logo appears, let go of the power button. Keep holding volume buttons down until you get to red CWM recovery.
From there, install the Superuser zip by choosing "install zip from sdcard".
More involved option - do it yourself.:
If you're like me, though, and like to do things the hard way, then below is another way to root the official release and leaked versions.
(Don't have the AT&T GB release or the UCLB3 leak yet? You can get the UCLB3 Gingerbread leak at this link: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507658). Extract the file in 7zip. Place the extracted file in the PDA slot in Odin. Flash.)
a.) Assuming that you have already flashed the Samsung UCLB3 leak, or that you already have it through AT&T and Kies mini, know these two things.: First, SuperOneClick WILL NOT root this release at the time of writing this. Second, you won't be able to root with the stock kernel, so you will need to flash a custom kernel at least temporarily.
b.) If you intend to go back to the stock UCLB3 kernel after using a custom kernel to root (not a bad idea if you want to keep all stock functionality), then follow this step. If you plan to keep the custom kernel (which allows for improvements such as CWM recovery, Voodoo lagfix, etc.) then skip this step.
If you intend to go back to the stock UCLB3 kernel, save some time and disable Voodoo lagfix by creating a directory on your internal sd card (/sdcard/), labeled Voodoo. Inside that folder, place an empty file named disable-lagfix (with no extension).
If you go back to flash the stock kernel, you will have issues doing so if you have Voodoo lagfix enabled.
c.) Use Heimdall to install a recent custom GB kernel.
Download a recent custom GB kernel. A good custom kernel to use is Entropy's Daily Driver, which can be found at this link.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1212795
Download and install the Heimdall suite on your computer. Follow ALL installation instructions in the README.txt file included with the program, including instructions for installation of the usb driver in zadig. If you don't install the libusb driver that comes with the program, your phone won't be detected, and you'll only receive error messages. Here is the download link.:
https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/downloads
d.) Put your Infuse 4G in download mode
Battery pull method: Pull battery, hold down volume keys, replace battery, connect usb cable, and continue to hold volume keys until phone is in download mode.
e.) On your computer, place the custom kernel zImage in the same directory as heimdall.exe. In a command prompt, make this your working directory, and type this into the prompt on your computer.:
Code:
heimdall flash --kernel zImage
If kernel flash is successful, the phone will reboot. If you disabled Voodoo lagfix, the phone will boot up without much wait. If you didn't disable Voodoo lagfix, wait for the robotic lady voice to go on about all that is being done to enable Voodoo lagfix. Hope you don't mind waiting. You remember that I suggested that you disable Voodoo lagfix, right?
f.) Download the cwm installable zip at the link below, and place it on your internal sdcard (/sdcard/). You'll flash this in recovery in a moment to get root.
ChainsDD Superuser zip (to flash in cwm recovery):
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
g.) Put the phone in Recovery Mode.
Button method: With the phone turned off, press and hold both volume buttons, as well as the power button. Release the power button after you see the Samsung logo on screen, and continue to hold the volume buttons.
h.) In recovery, choose "Install zip from sdcard". Select "Choose zip from sdcard", and choose the Superuser zip file that you placed on the internal sd card. Select "Yes -Install zip". When installation is complete, go back in the menu and choose "Reboot system now" After the reboot, you should now have the Superuser program and all system files necessary to be rooted.
i.) If you intend to keep Entropy's custom kernel, then you are done. You have rooted UCLB3 at this point, with a custom kernel.
If you want to flash the stock kernel now, you can do so, and you will keep root. To do that, download and extract the stock kernel zImage from HERE. Be sure that Voodoo lagfix is disabled before going back to the stock kernel. Use the same steps outlined in part e.) of this tutorial to flash the stock zImage, or just use SGS Kernel Flasher on the phone.
External sdcard issues?: If you go back to the stock kernel after flashing a custom kernel, you will most likely have trouble seeing your external sdcard. To fix this, use Root Explorer (or a similar app) to edit /system/etc/vold.fstab. In Root Explorer, browse to /system/etc and choose "Mount R/W" to gain write permission to the directory. Open vold.fstab in the built in text editor. Change the mmc2 in the last line to mmc1. Save and exit. Reboot, and you will regain use of your external sd card.
Hope that helps someone!
Is there a way to do this in Odin. Heimdall doesnt recognize the phone to be connected and Im much more comfortable doing it in Odin. Is there a tar file of the kernel to be able to flash it?

Can this step be avoided if we remove the external card before flashing the temporary kernel, then replace it after flashing back to the stock kernel?
(Thanks for the great summary, by the way!)

To get Heimdall to recognize your phone:
Put your device in download mode, and with the usb cable attached, open zadig (in the Drivers folder of your Heimdall install). In the "Options" menu in zadig, choose "List All Devices" and install the "Samsung USB Composite Device" driver. Then, Heimdall will recognize the device.

Even though my phone is already rooted, I wanted to thank you for this. I followed the best method I could find a few weeks ago: flashing the already rooted rom. If your phone isn't rooted, doesn't have CWM, and you want to make a backup, that method is more involved than the DIY one you have here.
So, if anyone is facing a similar problem (you need CWM to do the nandroid, you need root to install CWM), follow this.

I'm using the stock "My files" application, can create the folder no problem, how to create the empty file with no extension?
I can copy any file from another folder, rename it but it still has its original extension. Even from PC I can only create a file with a certain extension.

There are several ways to do this.
On the phone, I use ES File Explorer. With that app, you can create a new file without an extension.
Easy way on a Windows PC is to create an empty file in Notepad++ or even Notepad. Choose "Save As", and put quotes around the file name: "myfile"
In Linux, I just use the touch command to create the file, and then push it to the device with adb.

Ran the file from zadig directory-not noted anywhere in description :-(
3. Got the error message...
I succeeded in installing Entropy's custom kernel and the ChainsDD via cwm, per your instructions. But when I try to reinstall the stock kernel (zImage extracted from UCLB3), Heimdall gets as far as "Uploading KERNEL 100%" but then says "ERROR: Failed to confirm end of file transfer sequence! KERNEL upload failed!".
The phone then reboots, and the kernel version is reported as 2.6.35.7-I997RUXKG3-CL366622. I tried a second time, with same results.
UPDATE: I tried re-extracting zImage and running heimdall again, but it still failed. Then I tried using SGS Kernel Flasher instead and it worked. So I'm happily back to 2.6.35.7-I997UCLB3-CL977492 now.

Yeah, check your Heimdall install. And you're right, instructions for installing Heimdall aren't in this tutorial. Plenty of good documentation at the link where you downloaded Heimdall, and that would be another good tutorial topic. A few posts back in this thread, I did explain to someone else how to use zadig to install usb drivers for Heimdall. Find that and see if that helps. Until you have correctly installed drivers, you won't have a working Heimdall install. Read well at the install link.
Edit: The install link directs you to the README.txt file in the Heimdall install folder. Follow ALL of the steps there.

Does root browser have an option to mount a system folder as read/write? It sounds like you haven't mounted the directory for writing to it.
In Root Explorer, all you do is browse to the folder, select mount r/w, open the file in the built in text editor, edit, and choose "Save and Exit".

Same libusb error still means the same thing: You don't have the libusb drivers installed properly. Keep at it, and good luck.
Update: For those who don't want to mess with Heimdall and swapping kernels to get root on stock UCLB3, I've put together an Odin tar.md5 that will install the AT&T / Samsung 2.3.6 Gingerbread release with root already installed. This will install just like the Samsung leaks, and comes with all of the same stuff: stock kernel, etc. After I finish testing and uploading it, I'll start a thread in Development.
This will eliminate having to go through a long list of difficult steps to get root on stock UCLB3.
EDIT - I have a working tar.md5 for this, but need to work on it a little more before I post later this weekend.

i found the clockworkmod folder but theres nothing else in there should i create my own named backup? i put the update.zip in there and now when im in recovery>backup and restore>restore it says "no files found"
Lol... well first off you should never use ROM manager to do anything except RENAME your backups. Don't use it to flash anything or backup anything.
If you did a proper backup it would be under sdcard/clockworkmod/backup and it won't be a zip file. It'll be a folder of the date and time you backed up, and inside will have about 5 files some ending in .ext3 or .ext4.
Reboot into recovery manually next time, never use ROM manager for our phone.
I'm sure you lost all your stuff from your old ROM... don't know what that update.zip could be. If anything you can try backing up your current ROM the RIGHT way then in recovery, after you back up, just go to flash zip>and flash whatever the update.zip is... maybe it's a ROM? I don't know.

clicked install zip from sd card and picked update.zip and it said it installed and then when i run it it just goes too the same rom i was on but everythings erased(i cleared everything before flashing it)
If the update.zip were a ROM it'd be about 85 MBs... yeah guess it's all lost :/.
If you have the March V21Y baseband installed, try this:
http://s3.amazonaws.com/lgforum.com/...pdf?1337877028
That's a hyperlink to a pdf from LG which contains a hyperlink to its V21Y Gingerbread update utility which works with Windows 7. I tested it and it works.
1. When you run it, after the update window appears, open Windows Task Manager with Ctrl-Alt-Delete and locate the program named "Download Window" and right-click on it and click on "Go To Process".
2. Right-click on the "SmartFlashTool.exe" process and click on "Open File Location". That will open the folder "All-in-On" where all of the files for the V21Y Gingerbread update are located.
3. In that folder there's an application named "LGUnitedMobileDriver...". Run that program to install the drivers then, after the drivers are installed, close the "Download Window" which first appeared on your computer's desktop.
4. Run the "SmartFlashTool.exe" program located in the "All-in-On" folder you previously located and opened through using Windows Task Manager.
5. Follow the instructions in the pdf file you accessed when you first started this process ( http://s3.amazonaws.com/lgforum.com/...pdf?1337877028 ).
Good luck.

Good luck.

It will wipe CWM and unroot. I first used Titanium backup, etc. to reinstall my apps but I wasn't using an ICS ROM, I was and still am using Gingerbread with Faux kernel and some tweaks. After you run the update utility, you will have to root your phone, reinstall CWM, reinstall your ICS ROM, reinstall your apps with Titanium backup.
I've attached the pdf file from LG which is referred to in my previous post. The pdf file is what the hyperlink in my previous post is supposed to open in your browser but, if it doesn't, it is attached here. Just follow my instructions in my previous post with those in the pdf file which includes the internet address where the update utility is located.
