So I did a bad thing, in my ultimate conquest to remove things I didnt need/want/care for, I deleted the default messaging app as I use handcent.
Here is the issue:
Now since this is my first android phone I dont know if this is standard across all overlays or just touchwiz, but in the phone/contacts app, when you touch someones picture, it opens up a popup of all the ways you can contact someone.
Before it showed messaging, and when I hit it I could use handcent as the default. Now nothing is there. I have the same issue with the launcher pro People widget.
Am I screwed and its time to restore (again ><) Any way to get this functionality back?
You could try grabbing the messaging app's .apk from a rooted stock system backup (I think there's one in the Captivate dev forum), and then sideloading it onto the device to see if it fixes your problem. You can sideload using the Sideload Wonder Machine (just google it, it's the easiest way I've found to sideload apps so far).
One of my coworkers wants me to root his but doesn't wanna loose all data if it's preventable, is this possible?
What is he wanting to keep, and is he going back to a sense-based ROM after rooting?
I retained my contacts by syncing sense, google, facebook, etc before rooting mine. There are some file explorers out there that don't REQUIRE root, so you could possibly use one of those to back up things to your SD card (I can't speak to their effectiveness - I purposefully kept my dependency on this phone low until I had rooted it because of this).
Has he tried using the HTC PC software for his phone? Perhaps there are some features in there that will allow him to sync the things he wants to keep?
I'll look for some tools if you can give me an idea of what he needs to keep... (trust me, my wife's only reply was "everything" when I rooted hers I feel your pain).

What data are we talking about?

Specificity is your friend, here at XDA...
As mentioned, if contacts are have been synced to Google, then they'll automatically return.
You can also try MyBackup Pro for contacts, pics, and the other basic stuff.
If you want to backup app-specific data, if the app has a built-in back-up mechanism, then you're good for that app, but if it doesn't (and many don't), you're going to have to have root access in order for that type of data to be accessable by a backup app such as titanium backup, as it's kept in a special location that's normally of limits to any other app other than the one that "owns" that data. For example, when I rooted my phone, I said goodbye to all my angry birds scores/progress, and had to start from scratch.

You always have to lose data to initially root. Then from that point you can always backup.
He can backup texts and all before rooting though.
Thanks yall, he was afraid of loosing everything but I assured him that his piktars and music were saved to SD, contacts to Google and SIM but his SMS, I don't know how to backup/save.

Sms backup and restore. It doesn't require root.

Use My Backup Pro, it even restores your home screen setup to a point. I used it before rooting (pay for it! Its worth it)

I normally use TB to backup all my apps (+ data for the apps) because if using Apps2SD, it remembers and put the files back in the same place.
I use My Backup Pro for all my other data; sms text messages, mms, contacts (can NEVER have enough backups of that, LOL), calendar, browser favorites (seems to also hold my cookies and passwords, a major help!!!!!), music lists, and as mentioned, a near copy of every page of your desktop screen - icon placements, etc, which also is a major time saver.
So pretty much I use both, and paid for both, worth every penny in both time and effort saved.
Plus, TB has other cool features; dalvik cache cleaner (no need to reboot into recovery!), market link doctor (used many times, to fix programs that are installed, but the market don't see them anymore), and the many batch run ops, like mass move to SD card, restore only missing apps, etc. And, when rooted, you now CAN remove any bloatware at ease! Even Sprint apps.

Oh none of that is lost. Pics remain untouched as does the whole SD card. Contacts are backed up to Google, etc. Texts and call log is the only thing lost, and you can find backup solutions for that on the market.
You don't loose data or apps when rooting unless you get lost and brick your phone.

So as far as I understand, the tablet has the option to backup your bookmarks and what market applications you have downloaded. Whenever I do a factory restore, my bookmarks are never restored and the market only reinstalls a select few applications I had before. It seems a straightforward process, but I don't know why it just doesn't work for me, unless it just doesn't work at all....

Hey everyone, been working on this for a couple hours and think I'm pretty well stuck. Coming from an EVO, where I deleted the stock email app with no problem, I then backed it up, and proceeded to delete it from my brothers D2G in titanium.
Upon deleting, I found that the stock messaging app would open far enough for you to see the inbox for a split second before closing on itself and making texting unusable.
To replicate, I grabbed my sisters D2G and backed the email app, email authenticator, and one more email related thing that I can't recall at the moment, then deleted them and caused her the exact same problem.
Now that I knew my issue, I thought I could just restore everything happily in titanium and it would be fine, but it's not happening. Titanium says it's restoring, but just sits there and works forever without doing anything. I'm trying to find the email.apk and see if I can just reinstall that and bring everything back, but I'm not sure.
One of the fixes in titanium was to buy the pro version and change the app processing selection to auto, indirect, but I don't want to buy the pro version on something that may or may not provide a real solution.
Any ideas anyone?
There's a high chance you'll have to flash the SBF image to restore everything. Make a backup of everything, flash the SBF, update to 4.5.608, and restore with TiBu.
In the future, do not delete stock apps with TiBu. Use the Freeze function.
Hi All,
What is the best app or way to backup and restore everything on Android phone - similar to the easy way iOS have with having the phone automatically maintain an iCloud security backup and then if getting a new device or factory resetting the current device, then simply restore the iPad or iPhone using the online iCloud security backup - nice and easy with all apps, settings, data, pictures, etc.
I never owned an iOS device myself, always been on Android, but every time I got a new phone or simply wanted to factory reset and create a fresh phone again, then I did all the apps installations manually and went in manually to configure email account, calendar and other personal settings and logins for each apps that I have, fingerprints etc.
How can I make this easy and in the best way to save days of time to configure a brand-new phone from scratch - like iCloud security backup does or like a Windows PC can have a mirror image created to restore everything back to how I want to start from?
Many thanks in advance!
Very often phone manufacturers provide an application to transfer everything from another device to a new one.
For example, the app from Samsung is:
Samsung Smart Switch Mobile - Apps on Google Play
If you can't download, you can open Smart Switch from device's Settings menu
play.google.com
