[Q] Help backing up and restoring with CWM - Samsung Infuse 4G

Please Help,
For some reason everytime I try to use CWM to restore a backup, I always get a boot loop. The first time it happened to me was because I was on Infused(GB) and tried to restore back to Infused(froyo). Atleast, after doing some reading that was what I thought caused it anyway.
Yesterday I was on Infused 2.2.1. I then made a backup. Next I flashed to 2.2.2. I Then decided to go back to 2.2.1 by restoring the backup I just made. I was then in a boot loop. I had to go back to stock and start over.
I am now on Infused 2.2.2. My phone is working really great at the moment. Everyone was complaining about inaccurate GPS. Mine is locking in 5 seconds and accuracy of 5 to 6 meters all the time!!
Ok, The point of all of this is. I want to make a reliable backup of my phone in the state it is in right now.
Am I doing something wrong when I try to restore from a backup? I always wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik cache and then restrore then reboot.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!!

Move between same version of android, not different versions.
Say, u r on 2.2.2 now, and then u go to Froyo. If u want to get back, do a clean install of 2.2.2 and then go to recovery and restore

I am pretty sure that's what happened to me the first time.
I just cant explain the second time. 2.2.1, make backup, flash to 2.2.2. then restore back to 2.2.1....boot loop.

I'm starting to wonder if nandroid backups in CWM are broken for us... I haven't had a chance to really test it myself but this isn't the first time I've seen reports of the problem.

Is there any other way I can I make a reliable backup that you know of?

Any time I move between roms, I make a clean install of the rom, and restore the backup of the same rom, clear dalvik cache and cache and reboot. I know its a lil roundabout process, but it works.

Ok. I will try this next time I need to restore.
Thanks for taking the time to try and help me out.

[Q] Fission & my Nandroid Backup

Oh what up all,
So recently I tried putting Fission 2.whateverthenewoneis Froyo on my D2g. Did a nandroid backup, installed the rom.
The only problem I had was that Fission wouldn't take me out of airplane mode. Go figure. So, I freaked, no idea what to do, and just decided I'd roll out with my nandroid backup. So now I'm back to stock, and my phone is working just as it should. So I guess my question is this:
Does every nandroid backup put you back in that exact position you were in when you made the backup? Or am I still somehow in some weird mixed version between Fission & Stock? Like a smoothie?
Also, does anybody else have the airplane mode problem with Fission? I'm thinking maybe black edition might give me better results, but probably not.

Every nandroid backup saves everything when you back up so there shouldn't be any mixing. The only thing that might be held over are miscellaneous files in the cache but you can wipe cache without wiping data and be fine, or not wipe at all cache won't hurt anything.
Also, if you are having issues with the D2G version of fission try posting in their D2G release thread to let them know about any issues.

Help with Dexter's Froyo in Singapore

Hey Guys!
I have a XT720 as well, but I'm really not confident in flashing a rom through dexter's froyo, as well as installing dexter's froyo myself.
Does anyone here who has already done it live in Singapore?
Would love to meet up to learn!
why wont you follow the video tutorial from reverendkjr
pretty clear on it.i only follow his instruction on the video when i try to installing khal's rom for the first time
I do get where you are coming from but I really can't get the video and it really scares me to try this haha.
I'm rooted and stuff but the rom and dexter froyo seems like a big step for me... hoping someone can guide me in real life to be sure.
the phone have bootloader locked, your phone will not bricked if you do something wrong when updating the rom AFAIK
the problem that may happen as far as i know such as stuck on M logo, and boot loop but with reflashing it will be ok again.
just watch the video and courage yourself lol
hope you make it

If you're already rooted, try this to just install OpenRecovery and create a backup of your system.
Download dexter's zip and get the OpenRecovery.apk from there. Then make sure your battery is fully charged, turn on USB debugging, unplug the USB cable (sd card must be writable from the phone) and install OpenRecovery.apk. Then run "System Recovery"--that's what OpenRecovery.apk is called) and push the button to install open recovery, let it finish and then reboot your phone. Press and hold the volume key before the M logo pops up--you should get into the openrecovery menu. If that works, you're 90% of the way there.
Then in OpenRecovery use nandroid > backup and backup your "boot", "system" and "data" partitions (the backup all does not work on XT720).
Then use "wipe all data" to reset your phone. Reboot all your stuff is gone.
Reboot into OpenRecovery again. Use nandroid > restore to restore the backup you just made. Reboot. Your stuff is back.
The thing to remember about this phone is that being plugged in to the wall isn't enough for flashing--the battery will drain even while plugged in while inside recovery so always make sure you have a full charge before you start flashing.
Installing Dexter's or khalpower's ROMs is then just a matter of copying a different nandroid backup onto your sdcard and restoring it (and wiping all data).
I had the same fear want to install the new rom, but following the steps in the tutorial video, no problem, everything will be fine. As stated Mioze7Ae, first make a copy nandroid, and then install the rom dexter and last patches.
Good luck
Im using khals V4 rom now on starhub. Everything is awesome except battery life even with underclocking. still trying to figure out whats wrong with battery.. the steps to install khals's rom is quite clear. btw khal's rom is modified from dexter's.
Thanks a lot for the replies, really pushed me to get this done on my own!
Now my XT720 is running khalpower's rom v4 as well! It wasn't that tough and it was a good experience haha!
^ I find my phone's battery life is performing better though surprisingly o.o but I do have data off and network on 2g on most cases so maybe the change isn't such a big difference!
Having the partition to have apps on sd card is really wonderful!
Happy XT720 User!
:/ im used khalpower's rom raw without much installing and settings but still getting only 4.5 hours every 10% of batt gonna try dexters one with mioze's update now

If you back up the top 5 items in your choices (system, Data, Cache, CDrom and forget what the 5th is), you should be ok. Meaning it will save everything as-is at that point. Most important are System and Data (and sd-ext if you have app2ext or Link2sd**this will save your apps too in their partition).
System is all your build props, system apps (if you added or deleted some),...
Data is what it is named for. (sms, playlists, passwords, websites,...)
Not sure why you would want to remove your apps and launcher.
Basically you are making a complete back up so if you do screw something up, you can go back to where you were before the fail. Much like a System Restore Point on Windows (but that is where the similarites end).
I just dident know if apps could mess up the restore of the backup.
thanks

Is it getting stuck at the (M) logo? Which ones did you backup/restore? (boot?, system?, data?, cache? others?) Did you wipe any partitions?

I backup and restore: boot , system. After the restose, I wipe all ,but it only boots to logo M then stop
I was having this problem when all these new ROMs came out and was constantly flashing between them. Try to re-restore it again and then wipe both caches and factory reset. My issue was with the data backup but since you didn't back up the data might be something different with yours.
If all else fail, just flash whatever ROM you started with and start over. Since you didn't save the data part, you'll have to replace all that stuff and modify your /system folder if you did that before.

HELP

installed a custom rom = ''http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198684''
works fine , then installed "LeeDroid 3.1.0 Kernel "
and all of a sudden my phone just stays on HTC white and green screeen :/
dont know what to do tried installing other kernels but all have the same effect stays on HTC screen for minutes
give it al least 10 to 15 mins, before u jump to conclusion, it always takes a while when you first flash!
Just give it time,
ok ok thanks i will
Its been about 30 mins and still just the HTC screen CAN ANYONE help me!
It has been 16 minutes, not 30.
Be patient. Try reflashing if you can get to recovery.

It's a bad flash or won't work on your device. Flashing a kernel with a speed to high for your CPU can do that, for example. Do a restore via recovery or try and flash a different version of that kernel or a different kernel.
no its been 30 i let it stay on that screen for a whole game of dota lol i just had it on my laptop while i played and it stayed white and HTC the entire time
oh ok ill try that , im new to the rooted phone scene was just using revolution hd but i like the insertcoin version better ill try another kernel
Firstly custom kernals dont work with sense 3.5 roms, that could be your problem, wipe everything in recovery, data wipe, factory reset, go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache, then just install the rom and see what happens, or else restore (assuming you made a backup)
ok so i wiped and reloaded rom and we are in business thanks everyone for your help DDDDD hahaha im releived

You will most likely run into it again in your flashing future (the stuck boot screen). It doesn't always require a full wipe or restore to fix. You could have most likely fixed it by flashing the kernel that came with the ROM.
The easiest thing you can do for yourself is to always make a nandroid backup before flashing anything, even a theme. Just remember to delete old backups you know you won't use, they take up a lot of sdcard space.

thaey sure do take a lot of space. when I do an nandroid backup it always saves the rom with the date. can i rename it so I can keep them all straight? THis is a very NOOB question

how do you quickly restore after ROM install?

For those that are testing roms, how do you back up your installed apps/data to load to the new rom and get up and running quickly? I have 80+ apps that I really hate to have to reinstall or have progress reset every time I try a new rom. I have TB but have seen mixed reviews here on its results. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I have already read the threads how to backup existing setup in case something goes wrong.

Make a CWM backup. Install new ROM, then go to Backup and Restore, go to advanced restore, then select the backup you made, and select restore data. That will bring back all of your apps/setting and such.

Thank you. I thought cwm was only to put back to the way I started like a windows image file.

I apologize, I misunderstood your question......
I used CWM when I went from stock rooted 2.3.5 to stock rooted 2.3.6 to restore all my apps. I'd imagine there could be some issues if you used CWM in the same manner when going from stock rom to say RebelROM so for that I'd use MyBackup. I prefer it over TB any day. So use MB to make your backup of your apps (apk's and data) before flashing the new rom, flash the new rom and then once you get MB on your phone again use it to restore the apps, apk's first then data after all the apk's have been restored.
Sorry for the confusion
I use Rom Toolbox...it works quite well

I just tested a theory i had and it worked flawlessly. I just flash supercharged v5 and before i did i just wiped cache and dalvix and formatted system, i did not do a factory data reset. I then flashed the rom and everything went flawlessly. I still have all my apps and data from before the flash.
