[Q] Prevent Wi-FI Icon From Hiding? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
Search failed me so here's my question. I would like to prevent my Trophy (running the current Mango Rom from DFT) auto hiding the Wi-Fi icon when I'm on the start screen.
I have a low data plan (Student + New Zealand = Low Data) and would like to stop jumping into settings to see if I'm connected before using data based things.
Appreciate your time,
Cru

This is currently not possible, or to be more precise, no one has found this setting yet.
An alternative could be:
you can try to use the applications called "Network Dashboard" or "Connectivity Settings". On Mango, you can pin a live tile to your homescreen that shows the state of your wi-fi connection. I am not sure if it only shows wether or not the WiFi module is active or it is actually connected to a SSID, so you'd have to try.

Is Connectivity Shortcuts not Connectivity Settings, just a small correction. And there is also WP Shortcut Tiles app. Find them all in the Marketplace. All the best!!!

Thank you very much, both of you

Why you didn't take a look on your router?
It will show you, if your device is connected to the wifi network

GPRS under control. is it possible?

Hi,
when the wifi signal is lost or activesync is dsconnected, my HTC TouchPro automatically tries to switch to GPRS connection. like when i start browser or messenger application it turns GPRS by default.
My question is: have anybody seen the application or tweak that would show the dialogue window BEFORE the gprs connection established, something like
"application XXX tries to use GPRS connection. and two buttons: Allow|Deny"
that's actually all we need to control GPRS expences, especially when in roaming. (yes, i know about "no data in roaming" app). sometimes it goes like this: you're sure you're online using wifi, and browse or download a film or music. BUT, in the middle of the process the wifi connection is lost, but you didn't notice it, the device switched to GPRS automatically without notice and questions, so the rest of your download becomes golden for you.
if there were such an app with a simple two-buttons-dialogue, life would be easier for all of us... is there?
I have been dreaming for the same thing for like years
actually i had the same problem,
i was browsing comfortably using wifi, but unknown to me, when the signal got interrupted, it switched to GPRS...
actually we would know if we look at the icon, but it's absurd to look at the icon every once in a while...
so, my solution was... to call up the provider, and have them terminate the GPRS service.
it might not serve you any good, since you probably still need the option to be able to go online when there's no wifi, but it served my purpose really well.
So, as i can see, it's not just my whim - it's really necessary add-on. are here some advanced members, coders who are able to solve it? afaik, this feature is not available in winmobile itself, but somehow implemented by Nokia, for example.
Got IT!
guys,
i found the solution. it appears much easier than i expected: just check the
start/settings/sounds and notifications/notifications - connection established. [i have localized WM version, menu strings in english version may vary from my translation. so, just find something close by meaning]
that's it!
good luck.
Yes, I always set it like that so I know it connects with GPRS/3G but I won't still ask me if I want to connect or not, the notification is only good way to try to disconnect it quickly... if I am the one using the phone but if someone else is using it, it's just worthless.

App for blocking mobile data connection?

As per the title...
I'm currently on holiday in Canada and using the hotel WiFi - but it keeps dropping out and my phone connects itself using 3G. Data on my O2 contract is £6per mb - so I don't want to be surfing on that! Because Opera or Skyfire take up the whole screen, I can't see when itsdropped out of WiFi, so my bill is already likely to be huge!
Is there an app to prevent my phone connecting over 3G / Edge etc?
Cheers...

Can't you just activate the "no data on roaming" option?
Otherwise, you can install NoData, or Manila dial-up enabler/disabler.

Hi.
Use this to disable the data connection. Originally from MoDaco forum....i think.
This is how I did it, taken from the HTC support site:
How do I disable my 3G/GPRS Data Connection?
Follow the steps below to ensure that your phone will never connect to a GPRS/3G Data Connection.
1. Go to Start > Settings > Menu > All Settings > Connections > Connections
2. Tap Add a new modem connection > then under Select a modem, select Celluar Line (GPRS) > Name the Connection "Offline" >Tap Next.
3. In the Access point name text box input "Offline" and tap Next.
4. On the next page tap Finish.
5. On the second Connections Menu, tap Manage existing connections and select "Offline" then click OK.
Re-enable the data connection if you want to connect to the internet via 3g/Edge.
1. From the home screen, slide to the Settings tab, Wireless Controls > Data Connection.
2. Select your Country and Operator
3. Tap OK.
4. On the subsequent screen, tap Yes.
The phone will automatically configure itself with the appropriate settings.
Note: When disabling the connection in this way, your phone may report errors when trying to connect to "Offline." The error is caused by the phone being unable to connect to a data source due to the settings, and is normal.
yeah well it's pretty much the same when you remove all settings - it tries to connect but it can't and an error message pops up when it tries to connect. i just can't figure why it's trying to connect in the first place when i've stopped all data services available in the settings tab and there are no applications running according to the task manager? i want it to stop trying to connect cuz its freaking anoying.

Rumz82, I know it's been a while since the last post, just for you to know that CAB saved me some money, because everytime I travel to another country I have roaming data charges, even if everything is disabled.
If I'd have searched here before, I could have saved some money indeed...
Thank you a zillion.

[REQ] location-aware WiFi? App concept.

Hi guys,
I had an idea for an app yesterday... I haven't had time to do a search, so maybe it already exists. If it does, please let me know.
The concept of this app is to have location-aware wifi. The app would connect to GPS at preconfigured intervals to check the location. If the location matches a preconfigured place (like home, work, starbucks, whatever), the app would turn on wifi and turn off the data connection.
During WiFi operation the GPS checks should cease. When you get out of wifi range and your cellphone shuts off wifi automatically (is already possible in WinMo), the scheduled GPS checks should resume.
The GPS checks need to happen on schedule similar to the schedule found in ActiveSync, also with peak times. So if you're at home at night the app knows it's not necessary to check location during that time.
The app could also have a function to store a new location as wifi-enabled place. So if you are visting an office or a new restaurant that has wifi, you could add it with just a few clicks.
What do you guys think? Any devs? Is that doable? Already done?
Regards,
Lukas
+1 This sound s very interesting and would make WiFi use much easier
Thanks for this idea, hopefully someone can develop it
Regards,
Central
Thnx, I hope a dev will share your opinion...

There are apps that are 'cell' aware, so it know where you are, based on the information of the your providers cell tower. So when you are at home, you can use that cell id to identify you are in your home region. So you don't even have to have GPS enabled (and assuming your phone is allways on).
One of the toos I have some experience in is Ageye.de 's G-Profile. With this tool you can also disable Wifi during time intervals (like over night).
Its commercial wiht trail version. Check it out.
Edit: Just found another tool using Cell ID, it's called Wifilocations and it's free.
Btw. I'm very interested in how WinMo disables Wifi automatically when you are out of your Wifi's range, as you describe above.

That's simple:
Start -> Settings -> Menu (right softkey) -> All Settings -> Connections -> WiFi -> Wireless Networks -> Menu (right softkey) -> Advanced
"Turn Off Wifi if not connected in x minutes"
I can't take screenshots at this time. You just need to open Wifi in Connections in windows mobile settings menu.
Let me know if you can't find it.

Tnx, I was never aware of this feature
Wi-Fi Alliance - Wi-Fi Aware program.
This may help. Wi-Fi Alliance announced a new p2p certification program that enables power-efficient discovery of nearby information and services before making a connection and therefore the discovery is made w/o infrastructure. Search for "Wi-Fi Aware". aware#sthash.lG3aT03e.dpuf[/url]

[Q] CM12: How to disable wifi/3G usage at same time

Hello,
I have a "problem" with wifi/3G usage at same time:
Generally Android uses wifi OR 3G, at least as I know and as it worked on ROMs <CM12. When I come home and login to my wifi, I see that some apps are using 3G while wifi is connected. If I then disable 3G and reactivate it, my phone stops using 3G. This happens only in my home wifi. I assume that there's a "problem" with my network config. I'm using a firewall with web proxy, everything is blocked so all devices are forced to connect to web via 8080. Proxy ist configured in the wifi settings. However there are plenty of apps that are not interested in using this proxy - it seems Android decides then to use 3G.
Could it be like that: CM12 connects to my wifi and discovers that all ports are blocked except 8080. All Apps trying to connect directly to the internet can't do that and CM12 directs them to 3G?
In Samsung Settings you are able to set an option to allow the usage of both networks, if wifi is poor. But in CM 12 I can't find such option. How can I disable that?
---
One more thing: I use very often system profiles but always have to go to settings to change the profile. Is there a way to configure the action bar buttons like in CM11?
TIA
Hello again, I'll give it another try. No one noticed that with CM12?

I can't answer your specific question, but as a short term workaround, maybe try installing SmartWiFi Toggler, it has an option to force a disconnect mobile data when you're connected to Wifi.

WiFi Auto Connects to Any Open Network

So my wifi scans and then autoconnects to any unprotected open wifi network. I live in a city so this means every museum, coffee shop, hotspot, etc., that I pass, the phone auto connects temporarily to that network only to tell me after that it 'smart disconnected' because the signal strength dropped (as I, for example, keep walking down the street).
Some solutions online suggest turning off wifi when I leave my house (not an option), forgetting each network it does this to (not practical), and pulling up an advanced menu that doesn't appear to exist in our touchwiz version of marshmallow.
Anyone have any ideas? I only want to connect to a network automatically if I previously entered a password for it. This is how every other android phone I ever owned did it.
If you go to settings > wifi > more > advanced. You can turn off "network notification" and "hotspot 2.0" that should fix it.

WiFi Notifications was already off and I don't have hotspot 2.0 (I am on verizon and it looks like they may call it "Passport"), but that is also off.
Any other ideas?
Darn. That's all I know so far. I'm still exploring this thing while trying to figure out my wfii-play store mystery.
Hopefully this isn't one of those 'features' that turns out to be a bug like getting rid of silent mode in lollipop.
Hope someone else comes up with something.
I'm having the same issue as well, but I do not have an advanced setting under more.

Same here, no advanced setting under more. S7 edge exynos Netherlands.
Some apps call for quick connect via Bluetooth and WiFi. There is a setting to disable this.. Sorry but don't remember where is it. Only hint it is hidden well.
