Network speeds w/speedtest - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Curious what kind of speeds everyone's getting in what areas?
Nexus S 4g
Sprint Network
Southwest Florida
3g Service (No 4g here)
I average 75-100 kB/s, maxing out around 150-200 KB/s in really good areas.
Pretty lousy
What do you guys get?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

it varies within the same city you live in
it also varies if you are outdoor or indoor
even if you have 2 exact same phones in the same location, doing the speedtest, you will get 2 very different results
too many variables, non measurable
at beast you can only get a vague idea if the internet is adequate or not at that current moment in time
as the next minute or hour might work better
How do i know?
because i tried that already

I was getting ~3mb/s with the kd1 radio in canada. I then switched to the kb3 to see if it made a difference, but it was only ~2mb/s so i'll probably switch back

I'm hitting mid 6's to 7's on 4g. And that is in mbps
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

And 7-9 MB on 4g
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

Depends on time of day, internet traffic, subscribers on a tower using data, tower having flaky and inconsistent performance. Many "it could be." If you run tests in the middle of the night you might get better results.
I know towers that are notoriously laggy. Could be high traffic or crap internet connection or the tower equipment needs maintenance.

Envious of these speeds. Faster than Comcast in my area heh.
Got a sweet nexus 4g that is extremely limited in florida :/
Blah!

Verizon 4G coverage impressions

Now that we have had our phones for a few weeks is anyone else out there amazed at how good the coverage is on the new 4G network. Coming from Sprint with the EVO I am just amazed. Been two 3 different 4G cities in 3 states and have been impressed everywhere. Anyone else?

man i wish i were in a 4g area. sadly, i only have 3g here in northwest indiana but chicago has 4g so i am hoping that 4g will be here within the end of the year.
how does 3g compare to 4g for you?

I travel between NY and Philadelphia for work on weekly bases and basically have nonstop 4G coverage.
the entire east coast of FL is blanketed with 4g and working there way west
unfortunately my house is in the grey area
its honestly the biggest cell phone revolution since 3G lol... its really incredible.
I had 4G for about 10 minutes yesterday morning, then they turned it off. I was pissed. Guess they were testing. I hope that means they're going to light it up soon.
I was only pulling about 4.5-6.5 Mb/s.

It will be that way for 4 weeks or so, thats what they did here. They will up the speeds also after they load test etc. After that period of time they just leave it on

Lol I live in the heart of Boston downtown to be precise and there's 4g everywhere here. Am very impress but I feel like when ever my phone drops 4g for whatever reason 3g seems so slow now. But some time I have to force the phone to 3g just conserve battery that's a damn shame Verizon because 4g is amazing. But Verizon still have to optimize the yell out of it beside the battery drain some time it hangs before starting to download data or load a page, got embarrass trying to show off to a friend. But no problem with 4g here wow you guys without 4g are definitely missing out but at least you got the unlimited 4g plan before it they change it.

Same situation here.... :/
,
I am right in the city of chicago but outside downtown. I had sprint and the evo and their 4g was seriously terrible. Could only get a poor connection when the phone was balanced on the window ledge with the window open. The 4g would not go through the newer vinyl windows. I also could never get a signal inside most other buildings. I could literally only get it reliably when I was totally out in the open (even outside my house at ground level I could not get a connection). So, wimax on sprint's frequency sucks. I paid my $140 etf and switched to verizon where I pay $10 less per month f*** sprint.
verizon LTE 4g coverage is just amazing. Im on it right now in an interior room of my apartment nowhere near a window. I get 4g everywhere I go, I am never nervous about the connection dropping. This is how a network should function. Sprint is just awful and i will never use them again in my life. I would seriously get a land line before I got sprint wireless again. Verizon is so impressive to me.

Infuse throughput speed experienced?

I am wondering what kind of throughput others are getting.
Today at an intersection in Jupiter, FL I noticed full signal and decided to try Speedtest through Miami server: 9400kbs down/1250 kbs up. Captivate usually around one-third of that....and yes wi-fi was off

well im happy. it's not quite "4g" yet because my area doesn't have the backend for it. but it is better than the <1mbps that verizon phones see. some places the market wont even work on verizon 3g because there speeds are in the 100kbps area. t-mo is cool but coverage is not great.
Bump.
I'd like to see what speeds others have experienced with their Infuse. I'm curious because my GF's Infuse (see thumbnail) consistently gets 6-7 mbps down and .7-1.2 up. While my Inspire's upload is more consistent, my download (in the same spot, at the same time, to the same server) is usually significantly lower than the Infuse. Impressive. I've seen as high as 9+ mbps as well, and it hasn't been odd to hit those speeds, as they've occurred numerous times.
Same here infuse dl is much higher thsn inspire when tested back to back not at the same time infuse avg was 11 mbs down while indpire was 4.5 down uplaod was the same

ive gotten 14mbit down, hasnt really fallen below 10. ive gotten a consistant 1.2mbit up no matter how good or bad the signal is or how speedy the connection is, it always gets the same thing.

Dual carrier hspa+ has arrived!

So I've been testing my speedtest app and I'm getting consistent 8-13 mbps up and 2-3mbps down. Looks like dc-hspa+ is a serious contender with category 1 4glte. The g2x is only category 14 getting those kind of speeds, its not optimized to even get close to the theoretical 42mbps. I can only imagine what kind of stupid speed we'll get once the Samsung Hercules is released! I must say today I'm very glad to have switched from Verizon's spotty 4glte and crazy slow 3g.
Your getting those speeds with your g2x? ?? How... highest I ever came close to was 4.39 ...

screenshots!
I'm pretty sure he means 8-12 down and 2-3 up... because I've gotten that too here in OKC. The G2X doesn't have 14mbps HSUPA. And if it truly is a category 14 device, then it should theoretically be capable of 21.1mbps down. HSPA+ is only a measure of the download of the phone. We're still using HSUPA to send data to the tower, and until we get more power efficient radio stacks, it's not going to get much faster than 2-3 mbps when you're lucky.
The most I've gotten is 8 consistent mbps in the AM. Drops down to about 4-5 in the afternoon. Uploads are never more than 1.4 which is weird to me. I'm in San Diego, CA.
I get from 3mbps to 8mbps down and never more than 2.8mbps up in orlando. But usually its between 4mb to 6mb down and .70mb to .90mb up...

My best composite score was done while driving home at 3:30am... I got 7.13mbps down and 2.76mbps up with a 46ms ping. Now I've gotten a little higher on the download before, but never that high on the upload with a good download.
EDIT: Looking through my results, I have a 11.8mbps down but it only had 0.71mbps up. :-\
The other day in Rochester I was getting 11mb/s consistently. Here in Buffalo I usually get around 3-6mb/s on good days

yea the best i got was 10 down n 2.67 up see i get pretty good scores in philly bucks area at my house tho it blows usually 2 down im surprised to see 5 down

dc-hspa is when multiple carriers on the same spectrum combine they're resources to optimize data speeds and balance user loads on the network better. resulting in higher down and up speeds.

Technically the sgs4g should get higher speeds since it has a 21mb/s capable radio instead of 14.4mb/s on the g2x
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Actually, Tmobile just upped their network to 42 mbps. That's why you're seeing higher speeds.
Dual Carrier (Dual Cell) has nothing to do with two cell companies (carriers) sharing resources.

The G2x and SGS4g share the same radio category 14 hspa+ which is capable of theorectical 21mbps download speeds.

insane download speed

is anyone in the 4g areas getting insane dowload speeds? I just ran ten tests at least and all were above 10mbps, the highest being 13.xxmbps. or is it mps? the weird thing is thst they all spiked in the beginning to rediculous numbers well over 100. then leveled out. does anyone know if tmonile has increased hspa+ yet?

1 week ago a handfull of cities were upgraded to support 42mbps down.
if you live in one of those cities you should see at least a 2x increase in your average download speeds.
That has been true for me.
I head they did. Check this thread

cool. finally. im guessing im in one of the handful. fayetteville, nc was one of the first cities to get hspa+.

Post your 4g speeds and/or 4g experience.

Been heavily testing my 4g all over my city of Greensboro, NC for three days now. No signal issues, no drops, stays 4g everywhere except in my office building. All four carriers suck in my building. Even then... I still get 4g inside most of the time. My downloads blaze! Running simultaneous tests against my woman's G2... my Sensation is always a little faster.
Average bandwidth = 3 Mbs to 9 Mbs
If you experience slow latency (like the market is slow to load) go to this post for a neat fix. Mine loads everything faster now.
-edit-
Takes me about 10 seconds to fully load everything on the Engadget web site with plug ins on and desktop browser mode. This is using Dolphin HD browser. That's fast!
If you use the speedtest.net app click the results tab after the test for the true speeds. The main display seems to lie.

Could be a typo too ... or could just be really crappy network speed if it is indeed 800kbps.
No its really 800k. Today I hit around 1400k down 900 up. I'm happy tho. On Verizon I was getting 600 kbps if I was lucky. And I'd be lucky to top 100kbps these last few months I was on Sprint

I might be getting this phone from my sprint evo 4g phone but it is NOT 4g, it is HSPA+. Why does everyone insist on calling it a 4g phone?

Oh let it go already. Even the bodies that define the term have given into the marketing hype. "4G" is said to use a term everyone knows already. The few of us geeks who know otherwise understand just the same. I'm sure you do too.
Bottom line, it's got speed, that's what everyone wants. None of the carriers reach what the original definition of 4G was to be. The carriers call it 4G, so just use the term for the sake of agreement. What the carriers originally called "3G" was not really 3G, but let's not get caught up in a side bar when everyone knows what is being asked. Either the device reaches speeds the carrier calls their "4G" speeds or it does not.

2g reception
i have tried the quick fix to no avail. i am running on 2g speeds around my house. 1 mile over though i am getting 4g speeds.
question is, is this a tmobile tower related issue or a issue with the radio on the phone.
edit- i was getting at least 3g speeds on my old samsung behold in the same area.
New Orleans, La.
I live in Knoxville, TN. I am lucky to get 600 kbps around here. I have occasionally hit 6-9 Mbps, but only a handful of times, and not for more than a couple minutes. Not sure if it's a tower issue, or a radio issue. T-Mobile is looking into. My speeds were much faster when I had my Evo on Sprint

Don't get me wrong. That is the reason I said I am dumping my HTC Evo. I ran a test on tmo speeds on a g2x and I was blown away. So I figured, why the hell do I need to pay for premium data when 4G is not even available in my area since Sept. 2010.
So I decided that I will be getting this phone tomorrow when it releases at a retailer. But my argument still stands, it is HSPA+.
I got mine from Wal-Mart on the 9th.. unless u meant a tmobile retail store.
