voodoo lagfix will convert your file system to ext4 and make your phone faster. It is built into the kernel though, so there is no way to install it without installing the custom kernel that includes it.
Not sure what you mean by thw kernel, but most custom kernels that include voodoo lagfix also include cwm recovery.

Aslong as you are on Gingerbread, you can use Kernel flasher to flash that kernel. That would be the recommend kernel, if not the only one really.

Found this over on the G2x forum and i tried it on my cm9.1 unofficial with LZ kernel and i think there is a difference in performance. Let me know what you think.
Its universal for all androids and doesn't change anything on system so no worries on brick.
