[Q] How can I replace unmovable shortcuts on homescreen *root* - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I am running the stock Rogers rom (2.3.3) and am rooted.
The phone came preloaded with 'phone' 'internet' 'email' and 'applications' shortcuts at the bottom of the screen (like so http://www.androidincanada.ca/web/c...9_with_three_year_contract_54999_outright.jpg). I would like to replace 'email' with the Gmail application and possibly add messages to the list. These items however can not be dragged around like normal home screen shortcuts/widgets.
How can I do this? I am rooted!

I think your best bet is to use a different Launcher that you can customize. I use ADWex it lets you chose from lots of different dock bars and you can use any icon you want or even edit the icon. Just be sure to download Home Switcher so the you can go back if you dont like the launcher and If you like whatever launcher you chose you can delete Twiz launcher all together with Titanium backup since you are already rooted.

Thanks for the reply, I would ideally like to keep the stock launcher. Is there a way using root explorer to change the path of the email icon so it goes to gmail (or even messages)

Couple of questions...

I installed handcent and now when I get a text I get 2 notifications. How do I delete the at&t app? In titanium backup I only see the ability to remove the preferences but not the program itself.
Also I am running launcher pro and I want to use my tw app drawer icon but its not available when I go to change the icon. How do I get it on there? I can use other tw icons for other apps, just not this one.
Thx

Open Messaging, and on the main list of all your threads hit Menu then settings and disable Notification.
I had the same issue. Don't delete the messaging app. (I don't know if you should or shouldn't, so I wouldn't), just disable the notifications.
Edit: Gotten from here: http://www.handcent.com/Faq.php
It's an excellent sms replacement imo.

Change the bottom bar icons?

I was wondering if there was any way of altering what is shown along the bottom bar of my Epic 4G Android 2.2.1 phone. I have a new sms app that I use all the time rather than the stock app and i'd like to change the icon in the bottom row. Is it even possible without having to use a custom rom or rooting or anything?

The bottom bar is the dock from the launcher. I don't know which launcher you are using but on Launcher Pro if you long press on the icon you will be able to change it. I believe Zeam you have to add the icon to your home page then drag it to the dock. ADW is also something similar.
To clarify the above post, installing a new launcher does not require root. However if your carrier filters your market you may need to download the .apk file on a pc and install with a file manager from the sdcard. Remember to check "unknown sources" in the android menu prior to attempting the latter method.

Android theme customization question...

I just want to know how to get example1 instead of examplecurrent (attached).
I am ultra new to this modding stuff and have no idea what to even call this bar. But I am wanting to the the transparent 5 icon thing w/ phone messages ect at the bottom instead of the little standout-ish 3 icon one... help plz =P
All you'll have to do is install LauncherPro from the market. It is a launcher replacement app and is extremely popular. You'll be able to choose what apps/icons to put in the dock(that's what the bar is called ) along with all sorts of other customizations. There are other launcher replacement apps like ADW, GO launcher, Zeam, etc. Each have their own advantages and you'll just have to see what works best for you and your phone.
Then what?!
Ok I have downloaded LauncherPro , I believe cm7 already came with ADW or w/e so how do I change over and try the new one out and mess with settings and all that?
When you go to the homescreen you should get a popup asking you which launcher to use. If not, there's an app called home switcher or something like that. The settings can be found by pressing the menu button then selecting preferences. To change which apps and icons are in the dock, just long press on the one you want to change and you'll get a popup menu.

[LauncherPro] Modifying goSMS and goContacts to look better in the launcher

Hi there,
I'm running CM7 on a HTC Desire, and I kinda miss the more "polished" look of HTC Sense. I have launcher pro, and have removed the stock sms and contacts app from the app list so I can use gosms and gocontacts which have a better interface.
However, I found the naming scheme a bit awkward and the icons didnt quite fit in. So, I found a way to rename gosms to Messaging, gocontacts to Contacts and rename godialer to Phone (like the stock apps are named). I have added in the suavehd app icons here too.
I tried to use apktool, but the resulting apk gave me fc's and this method will keep working after the app is updated (unless they change the activity names, then I'll need to update them in this app).
Heres what you need to do to do the same.
1) In launcherpro, press menu, go to preferences and tap general settings, then select "Hidden apps". Make sure there is a checkbox next to the apps labelled "Messaging", "Contacts" and "Phone" (the stock apps) as well as "GO SMS", "GO Contacts" and "GO Dialer"
2) Install the attached apk.
3) Have a look at the app list, and now you have three icons, Messaging, Phone and Contacts that link to the GO apps!

4 Buttons Customize

Phone, Email, Web and Apps are the 4 buttons at the bottom of the phone of course. I would really like to change email to gmail and web to a different browser maybe although haven't found anything i dont like with teh stock one. I have it rooted and skyrocketeer 1.5 installed.
Sorry if i missed this, i have tried to find it.
Thanks Matt
stock touchwiz
are you talking about on the stock touchwiz launcher? I haven't used it for a long time but i believe you can tap and hold the icon to move it. Also tap and hold from the app drawer to get other applications to your homescreens. I use ADW so I really can't remember.
It's a little different on the touchwiz launcher. You have to go to the application list, then press menu -> edit and from there you can move the shortcuts off and drop in the application you want.
