hi guys, i would to ask your advice..
right now, i'm using stock ROM 2.3.4 in my Nexus i9023 and i want to try to flash the netarchy kernel, most of people said it is the stable one.
my question, is netarchy kernel compatible with the stock ROM? is there any issues about combining stock ROM with netarchy kernel?
thanks

as long as you follow the proper instructions on how to install it, it will work fine
I was running that setup for a while. Really stable plus better battery with undervolting.
Hey guys,
I've also installed NetArchy 1.3.7 CFS with my stock ROM 2.3.4 (i9023 model). I'm using the default settings (i.e. on demand CPU governor, max 1ghz, min 100 mhz). I didn't undervolt yet. So far my experience with it:
- recording video causes stutter and frame / audio drop at points. This is certainly a show stopper for me since the whole point to install netarchy was to be able to use Voodoo and record proper concert audio but now the video itself can get screwed in less than 60 seconds into a recording
- Battery consumption while idle seems pretty good... (sometimes getting 8 mA consumption according to battery monitor)
- Battery consumption when active seems pretty intense.. checking my e-mail with K-9 and firing up Facebook will start eating 300 mA).
So my first gripe is with the video recording. I'm already using the best CPU performance I can and I certainly don't want to overclock when the stock kernel was working fine (except for the sound). I might try other kernels (namely Trinity and Matrix to see what happens) but I like the stability of Netarchy though... in 1 week with it I only had 1 random reboot
Has anyone been experiencing the same ?
Netarchy is the most stable kernel. Mai ly because it takes the least amount of risks.

Is there a way to disable the Noise Cancellation during the recording using TB's camcorder? Stock, the audio is barely audible... Stock and rooted, same result... After installing the bamf 1.63 remix ROM, sound level works the way it should... PLENTY loud! I kept the remix ROM on my phone for about a week prior to removing due to excessive battery drain... I'm no expert by no means, but it seems to me that what ever was included in the 1.63 ROM fixed the camcorder audio issue as long as I used that ROM. Without using a ROM, I'm thinking that maybe the noise cancellation software is enabled when using the camcorder. Is there a way to disable this?
Note: I would still be using the 1.63 remix if it wasn't for the battery drain issue and much thanks to the ppl that spent so much time and knowledge that went into making such a fantastic ROM!
Did you try a different kernel? My battery life wasn't terrible with Adrenalyne's but it became great with Imoseyen's.

My guess is that it would be somewhere in the framework, not sure about that though, or how easy it would be to disable it. But as the person above stated, did you try any other kernels? I am running 1.7 remix right now with imoseyon 2.5.1 kernel, OC to 1.4, InteractiveX gov, and i'm getting a full days worth out of the battery. Wouldn't hurt to make a backup, flash 1.7 with the kernel and see if that works better for you, if not, you can just revert back.
Which kernel
I did a search of the xda forum for imoseyon 2.5.1 kernel. I found the official list of roms and kernels. There were several listings for imoseyon kernels. One had six different kernels... Which kernel are you using? Thanks!

The Special Edition is the one you want. Unless you don't care about in call recording, which is a part of BAMF, then you can just get the lean version.
Be sure to read the rest of the OP about the speedtweak.sh abilities. You basically get to choose how the kernel runs, it's very good.
I use the lean edition with the "extreme" speedtweak.sh "profile". I have it at 245/1222, ondemandx governor.
i'm using battery saver and interactivex on 2.6 and 2.5.1 before that. battery life is good on 3g, i notice slightly less than 10% drain/hour while streaming music, slightly less than 1%/hour standby.
question-which is better for battery life, ondemad or interactivex?
i experienced a long lag once while using 2.5.1, i think because of the undervolting. i wonder if swap would mitigate these cases, but people don't agree about using swap. haven't had a lag yet on 2.6.
As the title states, I'm looking for just a stock kernel with BLN support. My phone seems to dislike the modded kernels like netarchy and matr1x. I've tried the cfs and bfs variants and my battery life plummets. I've tried netarchy kernel without using the bln and still getting the same battery life.
Stock kernel on stock 2.3.4 my phone has 30+ hours of battery life and running a modded kernel battery life drops to 12-15 hours. Still a decent amount of life compared to my old evo. I've played with compiling my own kernel but can't seem to find any threads or how-to's on putting bln support into a kernel.

Unfortunately, the 'Stock' kernel just doesn't support the added hooks which Netarchy and its peers have added into their core.
With regards to your experience - have you been flashing modded roms, or strictly kernels? I agree that I can't claim 30+ hours on any of the mods, but I didn't experience that with the stock either (maybe 20-25 hours of low usage).
Flashing Netarchy 1.3.7 (or higher, CFS), along with undervolting (via Proton), 2G communication only, and maybe using the 'Conservative' governor may help you with batterylife.
Cheers, and Good Luck!
I was flashing kernels on the stock rom. I honestly like the bare google experience, just wish this damn phone had a notification light lol.
Oddly enough i've figured out that chompsms for some reason is a resources hog on modded kernels and roms. I removed chomp and google maps before flashing netarchy and battery life increased to 22-25hours which is livable for better notifications.
What's wrong with the kernels? You can adjust the voltages for optimal conditions in proton and that should be good....
I got Jame Bond last week http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949292 and it runs great. My batteries at 30 percent right now after 25 hours and bln's working fine. Definately recommend it.

honestly its have to adjust anything. i've been through multiple android devices from the g1 to the evo and 4-5 in between and i've loved tweaking every little thing. the nexus runs so well stock that fiddling with every little setting and mod just doesn't seem worth it to me.
I'm not trying to talk up my product, but have you tried the Matr1x kernel?

He won't talk up his product, but I will
I feel exactly the same as you do, sedracer. The phone is very good stock, and I see no reason to use anything other than the stock kernel.
Regardless, I gave matr1x kernel a try and I love it. It is exactly what I was looking for. I can OC if I want to, and it has BLN. No FCs, no random reboots, no freezing. As far as I'm concerned, it's stock with OC and BLN enabled. Battery life is about the same as stock, although I haven't used it for more than a week or so.
Oh cool, you are talking about v5.0, right?

Actually, no. When I first downloaded it, it was version 4.5. Only had it over clocked to 1.2 though, so stability wasn't a problem. I'm going to D/L the newest kernel right now.
Hey fellow XDA's
Having recently rooted my Nexus S (i9023, LCD version running 2.3.4 Gingerbread) I'm looking at the next logical step which is to install a kernel that will improve on my experience so far with the Stock Nexus for the past 4 months or so. I like the Stock experience so I'm not looking into a ROM.
However, regarding the stock Android, I realized that the video recording audio quality truly sucks...
.. and it's obvious the lack of a notification light can be a problem ...
... and the battery life whilst good is not incredible, still need to charge every night.
So what I need is to install Voodoo sound for the sound, BLN for the notification light.. and the battery life "improvement" could come from underclocking the CPU... (I could maybe overclock but really does it change anything in real life other than quadrant scores ?)
I've noticed so far that there's quite a few Kernel builds around, but some of them seem to have more stuff than I need. While this might be a good thing, I also want to keep it simple. I like the Stock 2.3.4 so I don't really need Voodoo colors for example. Also some users seem to report worsening of battery life with some of the custom kernels... (but you can't believe everything you read on the interwebz I suppose..)
It seems that I can either pick NetArchy, Lucid or Matrix kernels. Which one would be the simplest for me ? I don't need to have kernel features that I won't use.. I'm not looking to overclock the phone.. maybe underclock to help battery life when it's just sitting still!
Thanks a lot for any thoughts guys!
Take trinity miui kernel tuv10 1ghz, up to 3700 in quadrant. And it is under volt kernel. The voltage is lower than stock and probably save you battery.
If you wanted to save more juice, take 880mhz or known as teuv. Your quadrant still can reach up to 3300 with a very low voltage and stable kernel.
It comes with latest voodoo. I enjoy the sound very well.

You talk about saving battery life and leave out the most obvious, Trinity kernel, TUV or TEUV.
if you are on stock 2.3.4 i'll suggest Netarchy 1.3.7 stanble, the fastest and smoothest
if you plan to flash CM7 or some of its derivatives then i'll suggest Trinity TUV10
yep stock kernel 2.3.4 for european variant. I don't plan to use CM7 (yet)... but I guess I'll just do a NANDroid backup of my rooted Nexus with stock kernel and then both NetArchy and Trinity... see which one is best for my usage
Trinity is not that great on stock 2.3.4
i tried that already, but it's definitely best to try by yourself and see which one you like better
Just installed NetArchy CFS... so far so good. Downloaded Voodoo Control and BLN and it seems to work well. No issues breaking existing functionality... going to run it for a few days, see how the battery holds! Enjoying the sound and the back light notifications!!

2198 quadrant score... it's an improvement, but then again overclocking the CPU was never part of my plans so I'm happy
I bought a nexus S yesterday (the 9023 version), so I unlocked the BL, applied the CWR and flashed the 4.0.4 stock.
However, I feel the phone has more to give (more speed). Also, I suspect that the wifi signal is weak. Which kernel should I apply? I was wondering if I apply the air kernel, but the overclocking to 1.4 ghz kind of "scares me". But I see that OC is applied in other kernels. So, is it provely safe or something?
Also, if in the future I want to go back to stock kernel, all I need to to is flash an official OTA update again (too lose the root and the custom kernel)?
thanks in advance to all!
The custom kernels really can extract more juice from the NS. Try the ones that fits best for you, IMHO the best ones are Steve Garon's, Air Kernel and Franco's.
You can manage the clocks and voltages with NStools, and you don't need to use a daily 40% overclock. These things you can test, each device responds differently to overclock. I'm have a i9023 and actually using 1.32 GHz, it's pretty good.
Also, the feel of responsiveness comes not only by the clock, but also for SD speed and RAM utilization. Franco kernel comes with stock clocks, but the speed when oppening an app or scrolling the photo gallery is very good.

Many thanks for your reply.
Maybe you can point the key advantages of those kernels in your opinion?
The main advantages for me are:
- More controls for clock scaling, you can define how your device will scale up or down the clocks in response to use
- Franco, Steve Garon and Air kernel have tweaks for SD card performance, the responsiveness when opening apps is better
- Steve Garon applies a 10% overclock in the bus, some applications that are GPU bound become more smooth, like browser (facebook and google reader too!)
- Steve Garon's and Air kernel implements methods for lower battery consumption when idle, even with overclock you can achieve the same battery consumption
Personally, my device is now much better than with stock kernel.

Thanks.
My current favorites are Trinity and Matr1x cfs. Steve Garon's kernels were phenomenal, but he's recently retired from nexus development.

What is the most stable? Franco?
Hi,
Today I installed xenon HD ROM on my Nexus S and later changed the kernel to AIR Kernel. There were 4 Kernels on (Air Kernel Weekly #311 for NS - 4.2.X & 4.1.X JB) for Other ROMs. namely Blue, Blue NHBM, Voodoo, and Voodoo NHBM. I basically did not know what they mean. But when i tried installed all other ROMS gave me problems being very slow and laggy. Some how only Voodoo worked okay. But some how Voodoo gives a yellowish tinge to my screen ( which doesn't appeal much to me). Can anyone help?
When going through some battery related threads on XDA some one mentioned that the combination of XenonHD and Air Kernel weekly is the best for battery management and speed. I did tweak with the processor speed to 1400 as MAX and tried various modes like performance, ondemandx, intellidemand, etcetc...but all are creating problem (laggy and slow processing).
Can any one suggest me alternate Kernels? which is optimal for the Xenon HD ROM?
Make sure to flash a CM-based kernel when using XenonHD.
