Cwm 5.0.20 - emmc - to format or not to format - T-Mobile LG G2x

I know the drill when installing a new ROM is to wipe wipe wipe but I just updated to CWM 5.0.20 and now there's a "format /emmc" option. Format this dir also? Cache, data, dalvik, system ...and now emmc?

Well I formatted it. It didn't touch anything on my external SD (which was really my own concern). Anyone know where to get a listing of dirs and partitions? I'd like to read up on it.

I believe emmc is the internal
storage (aka internal sd). If you have any pics or music on it or just moved from a stock ROM I would back it up first.

4EXT/Partitioning Help!

Hello there! if I just want 1gb partition for games,apps, and I got a 8gb card, whats the correct way to do this on 4EXT recovery?
Also one of the things says....
Warning sd-ext2 is not formatted!
how do i format sd-ext2???
how do I go about clearing everything and starting again? there is a option in the wipe/format menu, called Wipe all Partitions (DANGEROUS!), does this clear everything? I dont want to do it without checking with experienced forum members first, so if you can help, please leave below....
You've got one solution
Make a backup from your sdcard on your PC, and format partition and increasing the size of three of them ( system, data, cache, sd_ext and ext2) with your recovery on EXT4.
Like this:
- system => Ext4
- data => Ext4
- Cache => Ext4
- SD-ext => Ext4
- SD-ext2 => EXt4 or Ext3
- sdcard => fat32
then, restore your files on your sdcard.

Use the EXT4 recovery as suggested, although are you sure that you'll need this space as the DS had over 1GB of internal user storage available to you by default. Mine has over 700mb free with all my applications installed.
The un formatted message relates simply to the non existence of the partition and isn't anything to worry about.
To wipe everything, the easiest way is to simply perform a factory reset, either from bootloader or from settings
The wipe all isn't what you are after as this is used by ROM cooks and wipes all partitions, which should only be used when installing new roms

format your sdcard, internal and external from within windows or from recovery, but back it up first from within windows
Format /sdcard wipes your external sdcard.
Format /emmc for your internal sd card.
This is for Sky ICS Build F.
Found this out the hard way when I aoft bricked my phone after format /sdcard and when I went to flash a new rom my external was wiped clean.

The rom (any rom) lives in /system partition ...
/data partition holds your apps
/cache holds your apps data and files (cache files)
/sd card (internal or external) is the place for your personal files
So when doing Factory reset , the recovery will wipe /data + /cache , but your rom would stay untouched like just flashed , the same is applied to the /sd card..
Like Vincom said : connect your phone to PC , from my computer , right click the storage of your phone (after you tap on your phone screen connection) and choose format sure after you backup your important files , then it will be formated or just select everything then delete ... After that boot into recovery then do factory reset ... Your current rom will stay as is ..but everything else is gone ...
Hope this helps.

Just FYI- In JB(CM10) the new naming convention is /storage/sdcard0 for internal and sdcard1 for external..

Wondering why my data transferred over when I installed CM10.1.

Before I installed CM10.1 my phone was a stock Verizon Samsung Galaxy SIII with JellyBean 4.1.1 on it. I had all of my apps, pictures, etc. on it. (I also have no External SD card). I ended up rooting the phone and installed ClockWorkMod I pushed wipe/factory reset within the ClockWorkMod menu (up/power/home). I also wiped the caches and Dalvik cache. I then installed CM10.1. Once CM10.1 was installed I went to settings > backup & reset and then did a Factory data rest. This did yet again another factory reset with CM10.1.
I am wondering how in the world I still have all of my 500 images / videos in my Gallery that were on my original stock JellyBean 4.1.1. Could someone please tell me. Also, please tell me what I should have done to get a completely fresh installation without a single thing from the past. The only thing I guess I could have done was a factory reset when I was on JellyBean 4.1.1 to wipe everything, then install CM10.1.
(BY THE WAY I always have Back up my data, backup account, Automatic restore all UNCHECKED)
The factory data reset doesn't wipe the InternalSD, it just removes apps and settings and puts the phone back to how it came out of the box (settings wise). To delete all the data on your internal SD card, go to Mounts and Storage and you'll see an option for "format /data and /data/media (/sdcard)". That will delete everything on your internalSD.
Here's the catch, though. If you don't have an EXTERNAL SD with the rom you want to flash on it, you'll wipe off whatever rom you were going to flash, leaving you with a phone that has nothing to "boot up".
If you want to start clean, wipe /system, /data, /cache, and dalvik cache, flash your rom, then format the internal SD, don't do it the other way around.
I think that'll work....someone else chime in if I'm wrong about wiping sd after rom intall (that'll get rid of the /0 folder...could cause a problem booting up...)
The easiest way is to just buy an external sd card....doesn't have to be big (2 gig), put your flashable zip on it, wipe /system, /data, /cache, internal sd, and dalvik cache, then flash the zip on the external.

I actually have an external SD card where I keep CM10.1 and gapps for JellyBean 2.4.1. So I can just go into mount and storage and click every single format option there except for the external SD one right. Then I can install CM10.1 and gapps. Right?

[Q] Installing Slim Bean - To What Extent do I need to Wipe/Format?

I've been using custom roms for some time now; generally when I install new roms, I do the following:
1. Nandroid backup
2. wipe data/factory reset
3. wipe cache
4. wipe dalvik (although i get an error that the SD ext partition not found)
5. flash rom
The installation instructions for Slim Bean suggests that I do "Full wipe, and manual format /system".
My question is twofold: (1) what is "manual format /system" and (2) is there anything in addition to the above that I should do to fully clean out the phone? I have not formatted the SD card, but I guess I can and just leave the data from there on my PC.
Any help is appreciated - thank you!

Be sure you back up all data from SDcard to PC, and then format sdcard.

1) In CWM, Mount and Storage-> format System, format Cache, format data..:highfive:
2) If you want to fully clean out your phone than do all formats including wipes, format sdcard, do not mess with other things.

Thank you - if I do that first step ("In CWM, Mount and Storage-> format System, format Cache, format data"), do I need to back up my SD card first?

No, in that case you don't need to backup your SD card.:highfive:

Just make sure u back up the SD card on computer so u have it. Plus be careful because there have been issue with phone not communicating with PC after SD card formating since ur also deleting those files too. So only do if really necessary.
But
I would NOT format the SD card unless ur having issues.
Just do factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik more than once. There is also a zip file called "format all" that will do all three at once with a simple click. You can find it on XDA
Good luck

[Q] Format data/media and internal without losing ROM flash.zip

Now that the Note 5 has NO external SDcard support, how are we suppose to do a FULL and complete WIPE inside TWRP ?
I am talking about when I want to wipe data/media ( Format Data ) to install a new custom ROM on a completely wiped clean system.
I know it is not needed allwas but I like to format data sometimes to really remove all of the old system when I install a new ROM.
With the Note 4 you could just put the new ROM onto the SDcard and format the internal memory safely, and just flash the ROM
from the SDcard.
What can we do now ? If I format via TWRP it will wipe the internal SD area and wipe the new ROM also so I cant flash.
Thanks for any ideas.

Easy, do an advanced wipe in twrp and don't check mark internal storage or the OTG, only
check mark system, data, cache and dalvik and nothing except do a factory reset in twrp.
(doing it this way will not delete anything on the internal sdcard.
Good luck!
Have a nice Thanksgiving!
Haven't tried on this phone as I haven't rooted but adb push should solve your question.
