Hi,
I have just recently acquired my first android device - a Sensation.
I have followed the guides on here and have got s-off and have been flashing roms.
Wow! This is all totally up my street and I love it - thanks to all the devs and people here who are making this possible!!
but I do have a quick question....
Im wondering what happens when I flash a new radio and kernal.
I know the radio is the bit that connects to the network etc and that the kernal is the bit that provied the core of the operating system but what happens if I flash new ones on top of an existing rom and then revert back to a nandroid backup or if I perform a full wipe and then flash a new rom? Am I stuck with the new radio and kernal or are they both replaced with the new rom?
thanks!

Some ROMs include a custom kernel. Otherwise they use stock. They don't include radios. If you flash a ROM the kernel gets flashed too. If you want to use a different kernel you flash that after flashing a ROM. If you restore from recovery your ROM and kernel go back to what you backed up.
You flash radios apart from ROMs. Flashing ROMs does not change your radio. Radios also control wifi, bluetooth, GPS.
Ok great thanks for clearing that up!
I'm not 100% clued up on this whole radio thing though.... I have read that they are region specific yet some roms recommend you to update to a specific radio. I am worried that once I start fiddling with these radios I will end up screwing the performance of my phone.
I have also read that there is a higher risk of bricking your phone when flashing a radio which puts me off a bit.
And finally, how can I backup the radio I have now so that I can go back if needed?

You can't back the radio up but there is a Radio thread which has all the radios in it to download

Yes flashing a radio can be risky because a failure there can brick it. As long a you get a radio for the Sensation, do the md5 checksum, and don't pull the battery while flashing, it should not brick it. A bricked phone is almost always accomplished by someone not reading and following directions correctly.
Flashing radios and kernels are for more advanced/power users. Most of the time you are probably fine with your current radio and if you have no issues there is no reason to have to do it.
Flashing ROMs is much safer and is usually all you need to turn your phone into a beast.
Thanks!

So I tried to update to the latest Radio for ATT. I was getting a 2Mb up connection.
I tried getting the RIL for this as well via
http://www.megaupload.com/?f=YCU9JUCT
Once I flashed the RIL I'm lucky to get .55Mb up
Is there a way to remove the RIL? I've looked around and have yet to find a way. I've tried reflashing the radio and downgrading the the stock one...which got me 1Mb-ish. And then putting back on the newest ATT radio.
Help please!

The RIL is flashed separately from the radio. Typically you will get the best connections by having a matched set. If you want the newest radio and RIL for AT&T, click the top link in my sig and go to the second post. It has them in one zip file you can extract.
So run the radio as a PD98IMG through hboot and then flash the RIL? Just wanna make sure I'm doing it correctly.
Edit: So I went to the link and answered my own question. Thanks!
So I had the problem where I was not provided a locked APN. I chose menu and reset to default and it gave me the stock att one. And my speeds are worse then before.
Run a nandroid backup, then flash attn1's pd98img ROM. see if that changes anything.

Yep, easy as pie. I would recommend reading up on radios before you flash them. Sometimes the newest one isn't the best performing.
Yeah I'm back to stock. I couldn't find one that was recommended for cm7. And I get 3down and like 1.5 up or so. Can't complain. Its all a learning experience though.

I've got a perplexing problem. For some reason, after flashing certain ROMS I get stuck at the HTC boot screen (have waited 30mins so definitely stuck). Some ROMS work and others don't. For example, Android Revolution 3.03 and 3.04 worked, but 3.10 does not. All LeeDroid ROMS never work. I have asked in the actual ROM threads but nobody knows. Why would some ROMS work on my device, while others just hang at the boot screen?
Likely to be something low-level related. I'd use the Super Wipe script if you've not already before flashing the new ROM
Thanks for the reply. I have experienced this problem even after a super wipe. What is the simplest way to restore to factory (keeping the s-off of course) so I can start from scratch again?
Follow the guide in the Dev forum. You need to use your RUU to go back to stock
Have you been checking the ms5 checksum before flashing to be certain you don't have a bad download?

i see more and more ppl getting this problem.. well you the second one P. yesterday i have experienced it aswell after using a wipe that i have used many times in the past.. the wipe refused to work so i ended up just flashing the rom instead... was wierd tho,
edit: btw what recovery were u using? I just tried out twerp at the time, altho i did successfully flash a rom with a wipe that same morning

Hello everyone,
I am new to androids and have rooted and s-off'd my phone, new kernel, etc...
My question is, what is the "radio"? I keep getting asked what radio am I running... I just reply "what ever came with it" lol...
Can someone explain to me what the radio is that they are referring to and is there a different one I should/could run?
MTIA!

Radio file is essentially your baseband configuration, the heart of all wireless communication on the device.
If something bad happens when flashing the radio, or the radio is not correct for the device, bricking the phone beyond any recovery is the usual end result.
Great information... Thank you, Blue!

Boot into Hboot. It's right there at the Hboot menu, 4th or 5th line down in green at the top.
( Boot to Hboot by turning off fastboot in settings: power: uncheck at the bottom of the menu. Then power off the phone, hold down the volume down key and press power - sometimes have to press power twice while holding the volume down key. - for anyone just tuning in. )
You can also check your RADIO version by going to
settings: about phone: software information: more: and then look under baseband version for it.
People often confuse a ROM and a RADIO, and they aren't the same - though some ROMs will include a new RADIO.
The RADIO and Radio Interface Libraries (RIL) have to match up or your phone will be in a very bad way, so if the RIL is not compatible with the RADIO ugly things will happen.
Generally speaking you should avoid flashing a RADIO if possible, and it should be a last resort to fix communications problems with the phone.
Flashing a ROM which includes a RADIO is okay, but make sure it's a decent ROM and be careful being a tester for a brand new developer with a ROM that includes a RADIO file.
If you flash a new RADIO, or a ROM that includes a RADIO, absolutely make sure you have at the very least 50% battery, but full charge is highly, highly recommended.
Do not interrupt the flashing process while flashing a new RADIO, and good advice would be to just leave the phone alone to do it's thing and just don't touch it while flashing. (you should do that anyway, though)
Wow, Blue, you are loaded with great information!
Thanks for the tips!

The radio and ril don't HAVE to match up although it is recommended. I messed with radios up the yin yang on my hd2 and mt4g. It is recommended.

Thanks for getting back to me bud.
Isn't there really?.... even tho I've backed up that particular version of my phone?
I got it back today and that was the build number.
Can I still restore the backup in that case and go S-ON normally?
If you backed it up before adding root then yes you will be able to restore it, flash the stock recovery and S-ON to go back to stock
The only o2 RUU to leak was the original one that was out when the Sensation was first released. Good to know o2 have updated to 1.50 though

Hey, yep, I got s-off then installed clockwork then backed it up right away. I didn't root, I just flashed your Stock rooted XE ROM and all is good. the 1.73.401.4
So let me get this right.
I fullwipe, restore backup then flash the stock 1.18.000 recovery it had and thats it? I guess I must extract recovery img from the a 1.50xx ruu?
Radio?
@ ajay
I am getting shabby signal on my sensation ( ~45%MAX) on o2 uk.
I have tried a few radios with no luck so im hoping you can tell me, when your sensation came back with the o2 uk stock rom on it, which radio version was loaded onto it?
Was it the version in your signature?
Cheers

Hello mate.
The radio in my signature is what I'm using now, although my phone returned to me with the radio from 1.45.xxx build.
Look in android development section for radios & you should see it. Hope this helps =)

ok thanks for that. I know about the radio thread and have tried 10.14, 10.15 & 11.16 and always have ****ty signal so just thought id see which radio o2 use for their roms.
How do you find the signal with the radio your using?
I never get full signal now in places where my desire would give me full signal.
Im starting to wonder if maybe the back cover with the antenna's in is a bit ****ty cos i get the wifi death grip quite severe.
Thanks again

You can get the HBOOT from any 1.45 RUU, but yes what you said pretty much sums it up. I would:
1. Restore backup
2. Flash stock recovery
3. Hard reset
4. Reset CID (if changed)
5. S-ON
6. Boot phone to make sure it works then hard reset again
Thanks EddyOS =)
Appreciate the advice bud.... Always handy to know how to cover your arse incase of the worst.
@beady_uk. Are you flashing the appropriate 'rils' to match the radios?
Can't really think of anything else bud. My radio & ril match & since I've done it this way I've always had good reception.

yeah mate ive matched radio's and ril's for 10.14 & 10.15 but i only get max of 45% reception when checking through the app "opensignal". Right now ive got no signal and on my desire i would normally have full.
Going to try a 2.3.4 rom as i have tried a few 2.3.5 roms with the same result.
hi guys,
my misses sensation is on O2 as well and after flashing ARHD 4.1.13 the reception went down noticeably. right, so ive donwoladed recomemnded radio from ARHD post ( 10.15.9035.02_2 ) I pressume i only have to pack the radio.img in a zip and run the bootmenu ?
do I have to be eng off ??
and finally battery life is barelly 14 h without using it can it be that radio or its becasue i let the phone to restore the apps after flasshing ??
My first question is: is it possible to get the OTA update on a rooted phone?
The 2nd question is there something I can do to get the Software Update check work?
I realise that my first question may answer this one as well, it's only just that all of the other ROM's I've tried did at least seem to contact a checking service and come back with a response that No Updates have been found. This one just keeps waiting for a response and never gets one.
Want to at least try the official OTA ICS update from Vodafone UK if possible, without having to load a stock ROM and locking my phone again.
Thanks

It has always been traditionally said not to apply an OTA on a rooted phone as, historically, it's caused nothing but problems. Whether the same is true now I can't say BUT I would not recommend it personally
do i need to uninstall only SU, or su and clockwork to install ota?
sorry for my bad english
thanks
CWM needs to go as well - you need the stock recovery
Thanks for the advice. I'll have to go stock if CM9 is a long way off. Or try 7.x again, although I'll really miss ICS.

I think as long as you have stock recovery but are S-OFF; it shouldn't be an issue. I looked at some previous posts , albeit from the Evo forum and it seems to be fine. I could be wrong, though.
I keep seeing people post about being rooted and flashing the OTA update. Now someone please, please, please correct me if I am wrong, but when you flash as new ROM, unless you just flash a new system via ADB fastboot commands, you flash a new kernel and all every time you flash a new ROM. So therefor it does not matter if you are rooted cause the rooted kernel will be replaced with a new ROM. For those out there that do not know the kernel is contained in the boot.img of a ROM. Now in a s tock ROM it is. Of always named boot.img but it is still pretty much the same thing with maybe a little more than a custom TOM's would be. So please people stop wording about being rooted, it does not matter. If you are on the correct stock ROM and have the stock recovery you are good to go to flash and run the OTA. It does not matter if you are S-off or S-on either.
It does 100% matter as otherwise the SU app/binary will still be present and potentially cause issue to the 'stock' ROM. Go look at the Desire forums all over the net for examples as to why you shouldn't flash an OTA onto a rooted handset

Ok I well look into this further when I get home from work. I have not looked at the Desire forums yet, bit I will later today. My question is though are the Desire users having to use the stock recovery, or has someone made a flashable .zip file for them of the OTA? If so this could have something to do with the troubles. Like I said I will check into this further this evening. I still say it should not as the kernel is replaced when you flash the OTA update, bit I could very well be wrong.
It's not that you can't do it, you can, it's just not recommended. By all means try it but should it go wrong flashing an RUU is all that would work

I totally understand what you are saying, but flashing stock is not the only way to fix it, it is just the easiest and most user friendly way to fix it. It is pretty much a one click fix, and that is because of the RUU it self. When you flash via a RUU the utility runs a Task 28 on the NAND memory first meaning the NAND is totally wipped, meaning all partitions, before the ROM is flashed. Now you can also use ADB to remove and reflash all partitions,Splash 1(mtdblock0), recovery(mtdblock1), boot(mtdblock2), system(mtdblock3). cache(mtdblock4), userdata(mtdblock5).
Now back to the question about being rooted, I still have not got home yet to get on my computer to look at the desire forums. Now from what I know root is acheived on the kernel level cause that is what root is. It allows for direct communication with the kernel, again correct me if I am wrong. Now I understand that Superuser app binaries would still be present if you flashed just the system. But if you flash a whole new ROM wich is what the OTA update does, then the kernel is replaced with the kerneel in the OTA update, which by is either a completely new kernel or a modified kernel that HTC has made to work with ICS. I have not had time to look into wich one it is, but from my experience of trying to help port the SDK of ICS to the Sensation it is probably a completely new kernel.
Anyway I will have to do some research on the differences between stock recoveries and custom recoveries. Specifically the processes the recoveries run when flashing a ROM from SD card, and just what all is in the OTA update files. Once I get to do this I will be more able to give a hard core answer to this question. Oh and thinks to the EddyOS for helping to get me back into digging around in ROM files and learning more about how Android works.
Edit: I totally forgot to mention JTAG, this is another way that you could fix the problem, all be it sort of a major over kill for the problem, but still a fix.
