You are the one who got me started rooting with my first Android phone, the epic. I am so glad that you are now taking on the EVO 4G. I have contributed to you via paypal in the past and suspect I will be doing so in the near future.

After you are done makin your vids maybe this thread can get stickied to eliminate the repeat questions. Great work.

Ur video is for hboot 2.10 not the newer 2.16. It will only work if u used unrevoked to root and not revolutionary. Yes you can get s-on if u rooted with revolutionary but you have to downgrade your hboot with a hacked version. There is a thread around here where someone did it and it is confirmed to work.
Edit: found it

I rooted with the Rev after running the newest RUU and I tried the S-ON zip file but it doesn't return me to S-ON... plus my hboot is at the 6.17. I'm trying to run the S-ON file and the rerun the RUU since I noticed your note that stated the RUU should be ran after the S-ON file... Do I have to root it one again to be able to return to S-ON? I don't think the root should matter since that's on the software level... I need to return this phone asap as my replacement came in... Any help would be appreciated!

I don't understand what it is you did. But what you need to do is:
First, flash a stock (unrooted) ROM. That'll unroot you.
Second, flash the modified HBOOT (6.17) to S-ON.
Third, flash the stock (unrooted) ROM from step 1 to restore stock 2.16 HBOOT.

Thanks for your response. Yeah, that's what I've been doing. I flashed the RUU then I did the S-ON file which looks like the phone took it as I did not get any error msg and it asked me to reboot. I reboot then I pull battery and reboot back to bootloader to see if the S-ON saved but it didn't. Though the Revolutionary pink comment is no longer there, it's still S-OFF...
I will try again though and hope for the best!

Nope, that didn't work. Still S-OFF with the 6.17 Hboot. I figured I'd try to root it again but as noted, Rev said I was already S-OFF but it couldn't flash the recovery for me and told me to flash my own recovery via fastboot... I haven't done that since the Evo was released...
This is driving me nuts... Even if the phone isn't S-ON, wouldn't the RUU change the Hboot back to the 2.15/2.16? I'm at wits end on what to do...

Hmmm. The RUU will only roll back the HBOOT if you're S-ON - because the signature verification is disabled when NAND is unlocked. It just looks at the version number, otherwise, which is why you're stuck.
Have you tried flashing the unrevoked S-ON zip in recovery (you'd need to flash a custom recovery again) and see if that gets you S-ON? Since you're not rooted w/Revolutionary, it could work. I'm really not sure why the modded HBOOT didn't re-lock your NAND. Maybe you should try a different version (I can link you to the one I initially posted, though that may have been the one you used).
Oh this is interesting... so whenever I run the RUU... it turns the hboot back to 2.16 but as soon as I run the S-ON zip and update, it turns it back to the 6.17 hboot and doesn't turn it back to S-ON... I saw the following for returning the Evo 3D's back to S-ON and was wondering it'll work for the Evo 4G?
Then open Command Prompt/Terminal on your computer and navigate to where fastboot is located (on my Windows 7 computer, it's C:/AndroidSDK/tools/. Now, type in the command:
fastboot oem writesecureflag 3
Once this completes you can go into your bootloader and should no longer see "S-OFF" at the top of the screen. It will read "S-ON."
*edit
tried to do the fastboot thing, didnt' pan out... tried to root and S-OFF my refurb'd unit and back to bone stock and that went fine... think there's just something wrong with my phone... guess I'll just return it and hope for the best...

I thought that only worked if you had an ENG HBOOT, but who knows - try it and see if it works. It would be nice to have an alternate method for people to use. Out of curiousity, what Hardware version EVO do you have?

Ok i have been going over every inch of the forums and all over the internet and i really run out of ideas.
i have a HTC Desire S on 2.3.5 with HBoot 2.00.0002, ive used HTCdev to unlock the bootloader and used superoneclick to root my phone (sort of) but my phone is stuck with S-ON.
i have tried everything i have found but the bootloader is stuck on the stock one, i have Rom Manager on my phone and ive tried the 4EXT but because of the phone being stuck on S-ON when it goes to the recovery part it errors out and i have to jack the battery out to get it to restart.....
HELP please :3
First your rom is rooted but system is not. You can install custom recovery , but use fastboot to flash it and all will works fine. For this problem when you go recovery you don't need to pull battery never pull it for this phone. Press volume up+volume down and then press power button and keep all pressed and phone will reboot normal

@RageReaper
Not really sure whats going on, cause you are confused and should do MORE reading.
Root is not the same as s-off, so look into that.
You unlocked your bootloader using HTCdev, thus you are still s-on and stock hboot but now can root your phone, have a custom recovery and flash roms. - NORMAL!!!!
Try flash the recovery in fastboot.
Just to be sure your hboot does say UNLOCKED at the top right?
yes it says its UNLOCKED but im trying to S-off my phone so i can make a copy of my OS so if something goes wrong i can always go back to it
so whats the best way to S-off my desire s?, Thank you in advance and to the people that will help
@RageReaper
You can do that once you install a custom recovery. Nandroid backup..
Ive managed to root my older android phones but this is really starting to bug me I can't get nandroid to work because after I used superoneclick I installed Rom manager to make a back up and it did the clockwork mod but the recovery part of my hboot errors out this is why I'm asking for help because I think I dropped the ball on this one

As said before in post 2+3, use fastboot to flash recovery.
Install clockworkmod, see here under section 1, step 2.

It doesn't matter if the guides are talking can't s-off phone's and different hboot's, they will work still.
Do the following,
-Turn off fastboot menu/settings/power/
fastboot (on the phone)
-Turn on USB debugging menu/Settings/
Applications/Development/ USB debugging (on
the phone)
Okay, get into fastboot, boot into your hboot (switch phone off and the
press power+vol down)
Plug your phone in,
Now your phone is plugged in and in hboot, press the power button once, it'll say something like fastboot usb.
Follow the link I gave you now.

HELP!!
I am new to rooting, and tried to root my phone using a guide on this forum. I got my head around bits of it but im confused now and seriously need help. I successfully unlocked the bootloader screen and when I hit recover I can access clockworkmod fine. But when I try to flash the firmware by placing the PG58img.zip on the SD card, it tries to run it but says "wrong image", "no image", then stays on parsing for a while. If I restart the device it just stays on the white HTC screen. What have I done.
I am unsure what version kernel I should be trying, (tried a few, they all stay on parsing), and I could use a good ROM too.

Thanks man, I shall follow it exactly and let you know how it goes. Lost without my phone.
problems
Ok so I have tried it to the letter, few issues though..
Since I have no working rom running, I cannot "enable usb debugging" in order to install the 4ext recovery. I got around this but doing this in the bootloader instead - is this ok ?
4ext seemed to work, and i have followed it to the letter, super wipe installed great, then I installed revolution rom which went well, choosing to install a stock kernal. However after reboot - still a white HTC screen
The only thing I can think of is that my firmware is wrong. Since I cannot get into settings (as i have no rom) and can only access bootloader and now 4ext, I cannot see its version - if there is a way can you help please
I need 3.32 but don't know if i have it or not as I have played around with it that much (my own fault i know )
Is there any way to see the version i have and install 3.32 firmware in 4ext or bootloader. Everytime I have tried in the past by copying it to the sd card, it gives me the parsing message and no image wrong image..grrr
Thanks greatly man

4EXT flashed fine ..thats no probs there ..and you did the right thing (adb reboot-bootloader is to get to fastboot ..which you can do it manually too)
did you enabled the smartflash ?? ---> THIS is the main step
did you check the md5 of the ROM ? (you can do it via 4EXT itself - its in install form sdcard-> check md5 i think) and verify it aganist the md5sum given in ARHD thread (in general just below the download link)
also flash the rom again ..no wipe this time ..just flash it
can you post the complete HBOOT details ? seeing that i can give you the proper suggestion (afaik if you are on ICS earlier ..you have correct firmware)
I have performed the md5 check and it was ok. Im thinking that after 4ext rebooted after the superwipe, I didn't re-enable smart flash (forgot it needs to be done again), so I just enabled it and am reinstalling the ROM with no superwipe this time..
My hboot is 1.27 so i must have 3.32..
I really do appreciate this, sorry im a n00b

EDIT: you got correct firmware no need to flash it again
dude the smart flash is said temporary for a reason ..you need to enable it every time ..when ever you enter the recovery ..until you make the smartflash permanent by following step 5 (which can be done only when you have a bootlable, rooted rom )
Yea im guessing the firmware is ok, the 4ext is great, superwipe works fine, the rom installs complete. When reboot, it just stays ont he white screen
Really annoying now since i have no phone and cannot seem to find anything else on it.

I can really understand your annoyance I have experienced the exact same problem to the letter. After several attempts to reach out No One seemed to help or understand my problem. I then went back to my HD2 and now have the HOX as my main unit.

going to re image the recovery and try it all again.

you keep on doing superwipe ..it wipes everything
just do it once ..only once
then enable smartflash
then flash the rom
if it still stuck
then do the extar 1 step in the guide (you need to get the boot.img of the kernel you have chosen while installing the AHD rom earlier)
thats all follow that once and reply me back if it didnt worked
(no extra steps)
ok done it again, same thing happens.
Now.. you are referring to an extra step regarding the boot image. It isnt clear in the guide. Where do I get the boot image from, and how and when do I apply it.

Usually the fitting boot.img can be found inside the .zip of your desired Rom.
Finding your "boot.img"
Open your rom's zip file
Open the "kernels" folder
Open the folder of the kernel you chose during install of your rom (if there are any choices)
Extract the "boot.img" to C:\Android (or wherever your adb and fastboot are located)

he does say how to find it right?
the zip in your case is ARHD 6.6.7 rom zip file
and you are asking again for how and when ..when he clearly explained the steps on how to do it
and i already told you when to apply it
ohh btw skip the adb steps ..you can go to bootloader manually and do the fastboot commands
ok, so i got somewhere
I found a boot.img in the rom/kernals
then i used fastboot flash boot boot.img
this flashed the img
now when i reboot i get off the htc screen and im stuck on the beats audio screen -- oo while I been typing its come off the beast screen and booted into android yey.. Thank you every so much man. I kinda understand this a little more too thanks to you and the guide.

Hey I tried to do everything my guy here did and still no luck.
the last thing I tried was flashing latest firmware package without the HBOOT, then flashed the newest recovery, then performed a superwipe because latest rom differed from ARHD, then flashed the ROM and then the Boot.img just to be sure (even though this should not be necessary according to the firmware)
How can I figure out whats wrong?
Hi all,
I hope one of you masterminds is able to help me out.
I tried to root my sensation without s-off with hecdev.com (using One_X_All-In-One_Kit_v1.0) and then tried to install cm9 from one the links here via revcovery with CWM 5.8.0.9.
But then I was stuck with the loading animation...
I cannot run Android now, so I cannot flash a stock RUU.
I can enter bootloader, which seems to be unlocked, here's the info:

I was on the latest official ROM (ICS, via OTA) before trying that.
I have not succeeded in flashing a ROM anymore.
Do I need to get S-Off first?
Or is HBOOT to new? Do I have to revert? How?
I tried older HBOOT, but it wouldn'T do anything after PArsing
Please help, any hint is appreciated =/
PS: I would be more than happy to have a stock rom again...as mentioned, cannot use a ruu.exe file, as it seems fastboot usb ist not recognizable by ruu.exe
Edit: After the 4th or 5th try, RUU recognized the phone when in fastboot usb mode, but update fdailed, cwm saif "security fail" ... sigh, seems I really blew it this time

Hi,
Start again using THIS GUIDE
Flash the boot.img from your ROM through fastboot.
Extra step 1 from this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25587345
Be sure to use the boot.img from your ROM.
Then make a clean install of the ROM again.
Also, read that thread for the sake of understanding what you're doing.
There is NO need yet to flash an RUU.
Latest OTA comes with hboot 1.29 which is locked.
You might not be in the latest one, perhaps start with an RUU with.the latest fw (3.33).

thanks malybru & kgs1992 - tried that, and the 4ext touch recoery said both superwipe and the rom installed correctly.
but when rebooting the white screen with the green htc logo appears right away and nothing more happens...any idea? I may have messed up the kernel before, but when asked by ext4 recovery whether to flash a kernel, tried both custom and stock, none changed the problem with booting up
@Raven2k: Manually installing boot.img with fastbok seemed to help, at least I come over the white screen, am stuck with the beatsaudio logo right now - thanks so far =)

Hi everyone,
About 2 days ago my phone crashed while I was using it and since then it won't boot up properly, all I see is the HTC logo followed by a black screen and back to the HTC logo, I think it's called a bootloop?
I can access the bootloader menu I think it's called (hold vol down + power button), I've tried recovery and factory reset, neither work, I went to the HTC dev website to unlock my bootloader menu and those options still do nothing
I'd like to add I've NEVER rooted my phone or added any custom firmware or anything like that, so I've no clue why my phone has done this, I've seen several similarly related threads but they've usually done something wrong while rooting their phone, nevertheless I've tried so many different things but nothing seems to work, I've tried to S-OFF using juopunutbear, I've tried flashing boot with various "boot.img", I've tried flashing recovery with "4EXTrecovery..." I've tried to flash with RUU, NOTHING works, I'm at the end of my tether and have pretty much given up, I've spent so many hours trying so many things :crying:
This is what it says on my bootloader screen...
*** UNLOCKED ***
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT- 1.29.0000
RADIO-11.24A.3504.31_M
OpemADSP-v05.6.0.2226.00.0418
eMMC-boot

Any input is appreciated, it'd be nice if I can get my phone fixed and it can help anyone else in my situation
Hi! So what recovery do you have at the moment? You should be able to flash 4ext recovery. When you do that, you will be able to flash a rom. Here is the thread you should follow! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861 Do everything exactly! as it is written there and you should be ok to go.
edit: If you would like to install a completely stock rom, you will find this thread useful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672425 (If you want to install RUU, you must relock your bootloader! You find all the info how to do it in the thread!) Good luck! Your phone will be OK!

Hi matekaneve, thank you for your response
I've come across that thread before, it doesn't work for me unfortunately :/
Despite the 4EXT recovery image successfully writing to my phone, each time I select recovery on the menu, my phone goes into bootloop again and the recovery menu doesn't load so I can't go any further than step 3 on the thread you posted
Has anyone run into this before?
That's weird... Have you tried re-download and reinstall the 4ext? Or have you tried another recovery like CWM for instance?
What about installing the RUU? Relock your your bootloader and install the right ruu?

I relocked my bootloader menu, downloaded the correct RUU, ran the programme, it finished successfully, took around 20 minutes in total, it said my ROM has been updated and my phone was ready for use but it's STILL stuck in bootloop! This is so frustrating

It's okay, I appreciate your efforts anyway!
I give up now, I'm tired of getting my hopes up thinking it can be fixed and then having it fail again
I know I won't be getting a HTC ever again, this isn't the first time this phone has given me trouble, time to jump on the iPhone bandwagon me thinks :good:

Boot into the bootloader with POWER and VOL DOWN. If you're going to give up and get an iPhone, I won't be helping you though, since I don't like people who give up easily. What HBOOT version does it say?

AW: [Q] Another HTC Sensation XE bootloop thread, PLEASE help!! :/
Fastboot is unlock ? I think you have bootloader unlock by htc dev.
And you tried Download a custom Rom or an original ruu with s-on.
? Did you flashed an recovery ?

thnx for your repley.

3 weeks ago when i had the same problem i tried to use ruu, but it fails because it cannot boot.
4ext recovery is installed now, but i can't boot to recovery anymorge, because it hangs on the HTC logo (sort of bios logo)
i hope you have some ideas that i can try.

try to reflash the recovery again
already tried, but after the command fastboot reboot the phone boots with hte htc logo and than its going into the boot loop again...
so i think that the mainboard is exploded or something, but could that be possible by using a custom rom?
thnx
