I was wondering if anyone has a morph or theme to change the "H" symbol back to "3G" in cyanogenmod 5.0.6.
Thanks in advance.
but why? H is faster than 3G. The icon for 3G still exists and will be shown when you are on 3G.
...unless you want H and 3G to BOTH have the same icon...
G < 2G < 3G < H
see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=639115
topic should probably be moved to q&a
I didn't know there was anything faster then regular 3G. No wonder why I'm getting great speed tests. Learn something new everyday. Thanks a lot man I appreciate it. Sorry if I posted in the wrong forum.
HSPA is H, basically 3.5G

I just got 3Mbps. This is beyond nuts.
Does anybody have a 3G icon for a blackbar theme?
H icon to 3G icon
ROMs Compatible With
Any AOSP/Non-Desire 2.1 ROM
What is this?
It changes the H icons to the 3G icons for people that don't care for the H icons.

Link doesn't work.
Go to the sticky for the metamorph, of the theme and apps section, and the link there under the H to 3g icon.

Thank you for pointing it out.

There is the correct link. It's been floating around since 3/29, so it's not really anything new. I still don't understand the reasoning behind it except for people don't like change.
my old phone was Tattoo and it was always staying on HSPA or something like that! now on my nexus I'm always on 3G!
what can you tell me about this, or how can I fix it?
Stock Android does not distinguish between 3G and HSDPA on the status bar. You should still be getting HSDPA speeds though.
that's kinda odd! thanks for the answer...
Most people don't know the difference between Edge, 3G, or any of the HSPA variants (HSPA, HSPA+, HSDPA, HSUPA). Heck they don't even know what 4G is and couldn't tell you what on earth LTE, WiMax, or HSUPA is. Stock Android doesn't differentiate because people know what 3G means and since HSPA is still technically at the most 3.5G it is a little confusing to change the symbol. The mass population dictates the way things work and we here at XDA find ways to make it work the better way. =) Hence the reason why a good number of custom roms allow for the OS to differentiate between each individual type of data network usage.
Im going to get the inspire this week but i live in latinamerica, in here we dont the so called "4g" damn we barely have 3g so i was thinking this is going to have a HUGE impact in the already crappy battery life , is there a way to turn off the 4g and just saty in 3g/2g without having to install cm7?
The 3G and 4g are the same. AT&T calls it's hspa network 4g, although else ware it's referred to as 3G. In fact, even at&t called it 3G until recently.
To answer your question, you just have 2 settings. Hspa and edge. So it's 3G/4g or 2g.

i remember i read somewhere that the evo 4g had an option for switching between 4g and 3g, the 3g from sprint is different? im confused with this stupid marketing move of the so called 4g, and verizon's 4g is just marketing too?
In latin america im gonna get a 4g icon on my phone when im actually just getting 3g? or the 4g sign will appear when it's suppossed to be displaying the ”h” icon , which is the one im getting with my milestone right now
Yep, the evo has two radios. One is cdma and the other is wimax.
The inspire will also display an H. Actually H+.

If you want to just stick to 2G, you can download Extended Controls from the market and put a 2G/3G toggle on your homescreen. Sticking to 2G will increase your battery life, too.

no, i dont wanna stick to just 2g, so the radios for 3g and 3g are different? when i get 3.5 g the notification bar is gonna display a "H" or its gonna appear as a "H+"
On The HTC Inspire the H+ icon well display for both 3G and HSPA+. So you will not no when your on HSPA+ unless you go to Settings and click on About Phone and then click on Network, and under Mobile Network Type it will say either: HSPDA (3.5g) or HSPA+ (I'm assuming).
I desperately need a solution to this as well.
At work the 3G signal is very crappy and the constant searching and switching all but kills my battery in less than 8 hours. I also get missed calls.
The custom ROM I had in my previous phone (Tilt 2) had the 3G Toggle and it worked beautifully... my battery lasted for 2 days.
*#*#4636#*#* doesn't make the GSM selection stick.
I tried several apps from the market and they only take me to settings and there is nothing there to change to force the phone into constant Edge.

Try using CM7. It does have the functional use 2G(EDGE) only.
Hi,
I always have long and complicated questions to ask, so I usually don't get much help, probably cause I'm Canadian
I have Bell Sensation 4G. It operates on HSPA+ from what I understand. It's a "sort of" 4G.
Anyways, when I run ICS ARHD, I get H symbol. Yes, I've talked about this topic a lot, but in other aspects. Now I'm just curious about the other phones in US, and if I am actually connected to "4G" networks.
What I want to get to the bottom of is I see mentions a lot of the T-Mobile 4G sensation. Is this specifically because all other Sensations on other US carriers are not 4G capable? Or are every one of them exactly the same, and operate on the same network type (HSPA+)? Essentially making them all the exact same networks and speeds as my Bell unit?
The reason I ask is I'm pissing around with the H, H+, 4G, etc. png icon files in the "systemUI.apk". Just trying to learn what's going on behind the scenes.
I note in there that the files are named as such
"H" icons are named as files like "stat_sys_data_connected_h.png".
"H+" icons are named as files like "stat_sys_data_connected_hplus.png".
Being that on ARHD, "H+" is never used. I am now wondering if I am even connected to HSPA+. I mean, if US carriers other than TMO don't use HSPA+ then that would be reasonable that the standard US based ROM isn't setup to properly connect to the Canadian network? The icon files are there, but they are not being used, so is it because I am not on 4G, because other US phones dont get 4G? Flashing the TMO option gives me the same thing, so maybe because our networks are different?
I understand that there is a mod to switch the TMO version to "4G" icon. But is that simply switching the icon names? Yeah cool I can do that and give myself "H+" icons to make myself happy, but I'd really just like to know if I am even connected to the proper network speeds, and it all has something to do with the radio version and ROM. (afterall, I did fix my 350ms PING to Speedtest.net by flashing stock Bell RUU, so it further makes me think I am not on correct network speeds, rather than just an icon issue)
If you're asking if you're still getting 4g, yes you are.... That is if your phone is capable of 4g... I have tmo sensation 4g and have the H icon... The speed is the same.... No changes at all... I can flash the 4g icon but decided not to... H don't bother me at all since there are no changes in the speed... Sorry if I misunderstand your question in any way, it was just too long to read and I'm getting cross eyed
Some phones in the US don't have 4g capabilities... Usually the older once...

I know it's too long to read but I don't know how else to explain it, and make it shorter. I just am wondering if T-Mobile 4G HSPA+ is exactly the same as Bell 4G HSPA+?
Put it this way...with ARHD 6.5.x ICS, am I getting the same 4G as I would be with the stock Bell Canada RUU? Everything seems centered around T-Mo 4G, nobody ever talks about Bell 4G!
In my opinion, it depends how strong hspa in your area... I don't think Rom or the phone matters, as long as it can accept hspa signals.... It might matter with the radio thoughh... Don't worry about the long explanation, it was just me thats the problem ...

I have seen so many posts and threads here saying H icon is for 4g connection. I am from UK we don't have 4g yet its all 3g still my sensation shows me H icon. On my old Nokia n97 it was showing 3.5g ? It's really confusing.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium
The connection that we call 4g ( atleast with tmo) is actually 3.5g. I'm not sure with the LTE technology though....
There's three different 4g types, fastest is LTE then hspa and last WiMAX.... So when you see H its considered 4g as for hspa
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4g with Beats Audio
T-Mo doesn't even have much of any hspa+ in the first place... if you look in network settings on the phone, it almost always says hsdpa and never hspa+... along with hspa+ not even being close to 4G.
I came across this when trying to make sure I am doing it right. When installing ARHD it asks if I have a tmobile sensation 4g - I have an unlocked Bell/Virgin Mobile one and have been hitting yes. It seems to work okay, but should I be saying yes to that, or no, because it is a Bell/Virgin one with different bands? Is it just to get the graphical band display? Does it have any impact on performance or the radio?
Hey is there a way to switch between using 3G and 4G? I know there is a use only 2G networks option but what about 3G/4G? Thanks
I don't think so...
To my understanding, T-Mobile uses the same network technology for both 3G and 4G (HSPA+) so turning off 4G would also turn off 3G. And if that isn't the case, it still wouldn't make sense to turn it off. It's only affect would be slower internet speeds. I could be wrong here though, lets see what the other posts say.

I think you're right BioRivit. Unlike the switch between 2G and 3G, which involved totally different frequencies and underlying technology, 4G is basically the same technology as 3G, except with a few modifications that allow a faster speed.
XD

Ok thanks guys. I guess my real question was supppsed to be how do you tell if you are on tmobile's 3G or "4G". I feel like I've never seen a 3G icon in the status bar, only 4G. Thoughts?
T-Mobile uses the 3g network to transmit 4g. Unlike Verizon or Sprint which have a structural difference between 3g and 4g, T-Mobile is using the 3g network with data compression. This is how they expanded from 3g to 4g instantly, no change in network structure. You won't see 3g again if you have a 4g phone like the G2x. You can only use Edge (2g) or 4g. Hope that helps.
Alright thanks guys
