recovery rom problem cyanogenmod7 - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I installed Cyanogenmod 7 and with it i added and Nscollab and I decided to change it.
Now the problem is that everytime i try to get into recovery from phone and from rom manager it displays the startup google logo and it stucks there.
iv'e heard that you can flash rom from computer. if anyone knows about program or any solution Please help me

Try to flash newest recovery form ROM manager. Sometimes it will not stay there after first flash, so try couple of times. If not, there IS the way to flash *img files from fastboot via PC. Google fastboot with other keywords, and there should be plenty of guides to do that ...
But first method should work just fine ...

Fastboot flash recovery
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

yessir, if rom manager doesnt work then go:
fastboot flash recovery iLikePie.img
IN FASTBOOT MODE
and you should be good!

i tried that, i said by phone(via fastboot) and it just leads me nowhere, it comes back to same menu only and reboot and power-off works :\

What exactly did u try? Go here and try to flash it...

i cant get into the recovery. via the fastboot and via rom manager
when i tried to flash with the fastboot, i pressed on the recovery button and it shows the google startup logo, returns to the menu and it leads me nowhere.
when i tried to flash with rom manager, it reboots, and leads me to the startup google logo and stuck there. what im trying to say is that i dont have access to recovery menu (the backup, install from zip file etc).

Try reflashing recovery from rom manager. It takes a few try for it to stick. When rom manager says it flashed. Reboot recovery from within rom manager. And keep trying till it sticks. Shouldn't take more than 3times

So you tried to flash recovery.img from fastboot and everything went smooth? After that you still can't go into recovery? Strange, that should work :S

it worked! the only button i didnt try it was the reboot into recovery,
thank you very much and all of you who helped me

[Q] Cannot boot into recovery. Laggy phone as well.

I was just about to try updating from NScollab 1.0.39 to 1.0.40 and for some reason my nexus s refuses to boot into recovery. It doesn't seem to exist anymore. Im not sure if it is related or not but my phone became very laggy after my first failed attempt to boot into recovery. I tried fixing user permissions and rebooting many many times but it doesn't seem to help.
What does it do when u try to boot into recovery?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
It doesnt do anything. It just reboots into the bootloader.
Thank you for the quick reply
edit:
i tried flashing recovery again through rom manager and now whenever i try to boot into recovery it just hangs at the google logo with the unlocked padlock.
Hmmm
Do me a quick favor.
go here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Ne...de#Installing_the_ClockworkMod_Recovery_Image
and download the 4.0.0.2 recovery image and save it to some directory on ur computer
then follow these steps:
1. Open up command prompt/terminal and plug in phone to computer
2. Type "adb reboot bootloader"
3. It will take you to fastboot mode. Now type "fastboot erase recovery"
4. Then type fastboot "flash recovery ____.img"
( ____ is the name of the recovery img file)
5. Now it will flash and once it says "OKAY" then scroll down using volume down into recovery and see what happens
plz get back to me bout this!

Thank you so much for the quick help! btw i updated recovery from rom manager and i ran into the same problem with it not booting into recovery so i am guessing there is a problem with the latest version of recovery? I'll just reflash through the instructions you gave me.
Yeah prolly a ROM manager issue

[Q] White triangle with exclamation (sigh) instead of recovery mode

Hi,
I rooted my Samsung Infuse and flashed CM7 as explained in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311960
It looks awesome, many thanks to the people who put it together. ( I couldn't reply there since I am a "noob")
My phone boots fine in to CM7 and I can make calls and use other hardware, no problem so far.
I was trying to get Gapps by going to Rom Manger -> Download ROM -> Scroll down to Google Apps. It reboots and ends up at the screen with the white triangle around an exclamation and the android icon. I do not get the ClockworkMod menu. I have to press and hold the power button to reboot normally and get back to CM7.
Am I missing the recovery executable file? I looked in /system/bin and /sbin and it is not there. Should I copy the one I used earlier in to /system.bin ?
Thank you.
I believe cwm can show that when it is working, on some builds you can toggle between it showing the files being copied and that screen with the power button if I remember right.
Thanks for the reply, Dani897.
I am trying to get the Google apps installed which I couldn't since the recovery mode isn't showing up.
Any hint how I can get them on?

Not really sure, I don't run CM7. But if you are using ROM manager it might just start flashing and never enter the menu.
If it is hanging maybe you can find gapps.zip on xda somewhere and put it on the sd card. Then use the reboot into recovery option instead of the flash ROM option in ROM manager.
Why not install the. Apk's instead of flashing the Google aps

Thanks Dani897, didn't realize the reboot has recovery option. Now I have the Gapps installed.
In fact, CWM showed up when I rebooted into recovery mode. Wonder why ROM Manager couldn't do that.

If I remember correct ROM manager has several options, 1 is to download and flash roms, 1 is to flash from sd card 1 is to reboot into recovery. if you use the first two options it goes into recovery but not the menu, it skips strait to flashing so you don't needed to do any more work, it only shows the menu if you reboot into recovery.

Do you happen to know of a reliable source for such apk's?

Good to know that. In fact, I tried the "Download ROM" option which downloaded the Gapps zip and rebooted in to the white triangle screen.
Now moving onto fixing other issues
Thank you.

[Q] [i9023] Blank/Black screen in recovery

Hey everyone,
Basically I was trying to flash a new ROM onto an old Nexus S of mine and when I tried to boot into recovery there was just a black screen. I pressed the power button and a single line saying "Clockwork mod Recovery" and the version number popped up. I assumed that the recovery must've been corrupted so I erased it and installed the latest version using fastboot which seemed to work fine.
Now whenever I try to boot into recovery I just get a blank screen with nothing else. I've tried using other recovery images such as twrp but the same problem happened, I just get the background wallpaper/image and nothing else.
I searched the forums and apparently people were having this issue earlier on when the i9023 was first released but now most custom recoveries are supposed to work with both i9020 and i9023.
Also the touch buttons light up and vibrate whenever I touch them when I'm in recovery mode.
Any help to this problem would be greatly appreciated as atm I have an old ROM which is buggy as hell and I need to get rid of it.
Cheers!
I had the same Issue. If you can boot into the rom, you can try to download the rommanager-app and install the recovery from there.
Hey I tried that already that and instead of booting into recovery it just went into the bootloader and said "No Recovery or Bootloader found".
Any other ideas?
Did you clicked the first point in rommanager? Install recovery, or you only hit the second button reboot into recovery?

Hey
I have the i9023 and I install rom manager. install CWM and if I reboot into recovery it works and I get in to CWM recovery.. but after reboot into os.. if I go into Rom manager and reboot to recovery it dont work? I just get the android figur and a "!".. then I just can Power + vol up and I'm in bootloader recovery..
Do I have to install CWM every time i want to use it? and can't I access CWM on boot op ?
sorry for my bad English
Normaly you have to flash the recovery only once.
Try to flash the newer clockwork-recovery with fastboot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686
Alfiedk: You need to get rid of this file:
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
As it re-installs the stock recovery every boot.
I think you can download any custom ROM for your phone, and flash it in CWM recovery, this will also solve the problem
Edit: Did you unlock the phone? Have you tried fastboot oem unlock?

Yes I made sure I selected install clockwork mod. Like I said the problem isn't the same when I do this, instead of a blank screen, when I boot into recovery it goes straight to fastboot and tells me that I don't have a recovery image installed at all...

what happens when you try to temporary boot into the recovery?
instead of "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img", try to "fastboot boot recovery.img"
Just look for an recovery.img that works temporary and then try to flash it permanently.
I'll try it and get back to you Xziped. If anyone else can think of any other ideas please just throw'em at me, I'm willing to try anything!
Yeah no help there either. It does the exact same thing temporarily booting into a recovery that it did when I actually had it installed on the phone :\.
I updated ROM manager to the latest and tried installing CWM with that but to no avail. It still says that there is no recovery installed when I do that.

Sorry but if not even the temporary recovery boots up, i dont know what else we can do
did you try some of the older recoverys? is your bootloader unlocked?
I haven't tried an older recovery and my bootloader is unlocked.
could it be a problem with my computer as opposed to the phone itself? As in my computer is messing up when trying to flash the recovery?
I've also noticed now that when I boot into fastboot mode the menu just locks up and doesn't respond to anything. Sometimes I have to pull the battery and other times it'll start responding after randomly pressing the power key a lot of times...
I'll try an older recovery next

Can't get into twrp, phone keeps booting

Hey guys, so I rooted the phone, unlocked bootloader, and try to install the twrp 2.2 on my phone, but i still cant boot into it from the hboot...it just reboots over and over until i turn it off.
I've installed twrp both from the ap and manually by doing fastboot recovery openrecovery-twrp etc etc
Fastboot in the settings is disabled.
I want to ultimately install clearrom4.1 on it and call it a day.
Any ideas? Cheers.

Try installing it from GooManager https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5zMHVwLmdvb21hbmFnZXIiXQ..
Open the app, hit menu and install the open recovery from there. Then boot while holding Power + Vol Down (or adb reboot recovery)
Edit: I'm stupid and can't read. I didn't notice that you already installed using the app...Try it again though and then adb reboot recovery to see if you can get there. Once you install a custom rom there should be an extended power menu where you can boot into recovery directly.
I'm sure you did but just asking, on goo manager, did you install " open recovery script" ?

Fellas try flashing another recovery. Or download again this one that you currently have and flash this again
Which recovery?? Twrp 2.5??

ok im going to try to go back to ruu and flash recovery again. can some1 give me the link to the thread containing all the ruu?
No need to flash the RUU.. Just reflash the recovery using
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
yeah, when i tried that and it says fastboot is not recognized as internal or external command. :\

That means fastboot is not installed... Or is not recognized..
Go to the original android development section, and download fastboot for windows from the twrp recovery thread..
And also download twrp 2.5.0.0 from the same thread(bith links are in the 1st post)..
Extract both zips in a folder, then from cmd prompt, navigate to that folder, and from there, run
Code:
fastboot devices
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
If you have the android sdk installed, run an update, to get the newest version of fastboot(not needed) and then run the "fastboot flash.." command..

Try again if it doesnt work ... Sometimes after a freshly flashing the recovery it gets stuck at teamwin splashscreen.. then just remove battery and by using the power and vol button combo boot into bootloader and then into recovery. If its still getting stuck at teamwin logo.. try redownloading the recovery.img.. this time from the thread..and flash it again.. if it still doesnt work .. then go to the Rooting tutorial by jaggyjags and flash the A310e recovery using the bat file.. That must do the trick.
when i reflashed and tried to go into recovery, first it goes to splashscreen then suddenly goes blank and then comes back to splashscreen and gets stuck there. when i tried the jaggyjags recovery it goes blank. how could have something gone so wrong just coz i switched off my phone for a few days? i was running cm9 build 14 and yannou cwm5. now nothing seems to work. any other suggestions?

Try removing SD card and booting into recovery. If it enters into recovery fully , electrocute your SDcard by putting it back in,while inside recovery ,then do what you have to.
If all doesn't work ,could be a burnt recovery ..You May try this.. not sure about exact code.
Code:
fastboot boot recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
You need twrp 2 5 recovery.img in /SDcard
Complete cute prince recovery procedure and try booting your Rom. You will not be able Flash any other recovery if you've actually burnt it. Only way is by the above code.. If your Rom boots, read twrp thread fully.
