Went to Slatedroid, a good site and like any including thisnone you are always the lookout for traps and malware.
The information there is quite interesting and very useful. As the man says, although a long shot pressing the off button when in the sleep mode can fry your tablet. It is not as often as it is somehow made out to be but it can be a killer for the gtab due to some of the programing which at this point can't be helped some of the new roms can cause SOD failure.
Set my screen in settings to not turn off and spare parts go to off setting and use never. Reboot and it should be fine.
Hope this helps.
I am having trouble with any 1.2 bl based rom other than stockn with SoD issues. So far nothing works. Now that Flashback has dropped 1.1 support, I am back on 1.1bl with gtabcomb 3.3
Sent from my GtabComb using xda premium
The conversation is more detailed over there, but I will just mention here, because I have spent a lot of time experimenting, that the common thing across all the roms that have this problem for me is Pershoot's kernel and the 1.2bl. I have no SOD on any rom with bl 1.1, and I have SOD on every rom with bl 1.2 except roms where say Roebeet uses the stock kernel, or when he used to use Clemsyn on his HC port before switching to Pershoot. I also don't have it if I use an Adam kernel based rom, though I have other issues there.
I don't think it's that there's a problem with Pershoot's kernel per se, I have heard that it does use some very low voltages that on some GTabs, with bl 1.2, cause the SOD issue.
The real problem is that at the moment, pershoot is really the only actively developed gtab kernel so everyone uses it on their rom. I have very high hopes for the .36 kernel development going on.

I am happy to say, I have yet to experience this phenomenon on the G-Tab (many ROMs) or my TouchPad (WebOS ... for now!). I have been on the 1.2 BL since Roebeet (?) rolled it out.
My G-Tab is relegated to my home office now, doing 24x7 TuneIn and news/weather streaming since I got my TouchPad.
Pretty sure I saw somewhere a discussion that overclocking may be the key. ie If you don't OC you don't SOD. Anybody here think that too?
I don't think its an overclock issue. I get it without having installed any overclocking program. Like MicroChip, it is only an issue with 1.2 bl roms.

I am on bl1.2 GtabComb 3.3. I have SOD on all roms except stock. The only cure that I found is Captivate. Download it from market.

I have tried the other Kernels available , Genocide, Twilight etc. The performance gains are real and it is amazing what the developers are doing.
However I have significant instability with these Kernels compared to Stock. I use my phone for business and stability is #1 priority for me. The only fix I really need is the skipped key press bug. I am running stock now but the keyboard is unusable without the fix.
Would one of the developers that knows what they are doing have time to compile a stock kernel with only the skipped keyboard fix implemented?
Thanks!

I'm like you, I want stability above all else and I only wanted the skipped keyboard fix. I don't care about overclock/undervolting and what not. Just want something stable. Although this kernel has some other minor changes, it's pretty much stock.
I just flashed this kernel this morning and haven't had any issues thus far but it's only been a few hours.
I'll report back tomorrow and let you know if I run into any issues.

Just wanted to say thanks again for compiling that kernel. Downloaded voodoo controller from the market as well. Didn't realize what I was missing as far as sound quality!
Not to rudely question your decision, but have you tried any customs that support voltage control? (Currently only genocide, but twilight is promising it soon). I used to have terrible instability, but it was because my phone couldn't handle undervolting... genocide + voltage control removing undervolt fixed that.
On a side note, if you decide to try genocide make sure you go to the end and look for the 1.0.1 test build, it fixed the kswapd0 high cpu usage bug (rare, but definitely made the phone less stable). I've had 18 hours of perfect uptime (not battery of course) since installing the update, and I have large tendancy to max out my phone.

Well since you guys are soo experienced with different kernals let me ask you this question..
I just got my thunderbolt and I wanna root my phone and overclock it safely to 1.6g. So, which kernel would you recommend? BTW I AM A BIT OF A NOOB!! so please try and keep the terms as "noob friendly" as possibly haha. Thanks guys!
leanKernel supports 1.92 and BAMF will do up to 1.4, I believe.
Do you want sense? Run Perfect Storm roms with bamf kernel.
Do you want aosp? Run cyanogen with imoseyon aosp kernel.
Do you want sense removed? Run blackhole with bamf kernel.
OC to 1.92 I don't suggest, my phone locks up at that speed. OC to 1.4 stable.

I'm stock, rooted, running bang 4.4.5 kernel, and get 24+hrs from my extended battery (a must-have) might be weird, but I like Sense...
OK, so here's a (useful?) question/request to all you ROM addicts (I am not one, unfortunately!):
Is there (it would be nice if there was) a comparison of ALL kernels and ROMs to see which gets the best battery life on their Thunderbolt?
This would, obviously, have to be done by one person trying out different combinations of kernels and ROMs, as everyone has different usage patterns (and different batteries!! --each battery, it seems, behaves differently).
But I think it would be very helpful for many of us folks to have a good, consistent, complete, at least somewhat accurate comparison, as the battery issue seems to be probably the single largest issue affecting the most people with the TB.
Anyone?
Why do you need to overlook to 1.6? For being a noob, that's rather aggressive

CM is here. They have some WIFI and 4g problems but other than that the ROM is complete.
With the introduction of BRD's latest 1.7 GHz kernel, I thought maybe a poll is in order to gauge how many Xooms are able to handle the higher speeds.
I'm completly stable @ 1400, and mostly stable @ 1500 and 1600. At 15 and 16 if i'm using the stock browser it resets the device. At 1700 I can't do anything.
1.6ghz cpmpletely stable for me. 1.7 is stable for up to 20 mns. until the CPU gets hot and reboots itself
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
How can I change the speed the CPU is running at? Setcpu won't allow me to go over 1ghz even with 1.4.4 @ 1.7ghz kernel. Newb question I know...
Runs half-stable at 1.7ghz, some graphic artifacts start popping up after 15-20 mins. Riptide kernel @ 1.6ghz ran perfect.

Personally I wish more people would just post in the right threads that already exist... like if someone runs tiamat 1.4.4 and XYZ doesnt work they should post int he damn tiamat 1.4.4 thread about it but instead they run HERE and post why XYZ doesnt work. Guys like me would like to help but since we're running stock and XYZ probably works fine for us... what are we supposed to say besides "go ask in the right place".

Its really simple. If you are developing something besides and app or theme start a tread in development. If you just wanna chat put in general. If you have an app or theme post in themes and apps. If you have a question it goes in q and a. The only exception is if you have a question relating to a thread already in development or apps and themes, post it in the tread that's already there.

perhaps more interesting information to know is which ones are wifi only and which ones are 3G to see if there is any correlation to the speed and model type.

Awesome idea with this poll. I was actually wondering about this myself, and am very interested in the results.
I was initially disappointed that I couldn't run 1.7 smoothly, but it now seems that I'm not that bad off, as I have it rock solid @ 1.6.
I run 1.5ghz comfortably, 1.6 might last 5-10 minutes before I get a reboot (with no temp increase) and if I so even as make eye contact with 1.7 I get rebooted.
1.7GHz was stable for a short while and then it locked up and rebooted.
1.6GHz is stable 100% even on very heavy usage for me.
UK wifi only
I use 1.4. It is pretty stable and only reboots once in a blue moon at 1.5.
Reboots once every few hours at 1.6
1.7 crashes within seconds of booting!!
Tbh I don't notice a huge difference going over 1.4 so I'm not too worried.

I've been wondering about this as well. I have a WiFi version and 1.6 is perfection, but my Xoom was only able to tolerate 1.7 interactive for about half a day, then started acting funky.
Is it possible that due to the power needs of the modem the 3Gs might be more tolerant at the higher frequencies...or not. I think BRD has a 3G version and hiis has been flying 1.7Ghz. It's something to look at maybe.
Thread cleaned up.
I have deleted the off-topic discussion from this thread.
The fact of the matter is that questions are not allowed to be posted in the development forum, as they hamper actual development by diluting the board. If active development is not underway, it belongs in one of the other sub-forums. If it's a question, it goes in Q&A. If it's a statement / observation, it goes in General. If it's a theme and/or app, it goes in themes/apps. While I see a little bit of a redundancy with being able to ask for help in a ROM / kernel thread and asking in a new thread in the Q&A forum, the Q&A forum is geared more at larger questions that would be distracting to ask in the development section's ROM / kernel thread.
Sorry if this is upsetting to some, but it is the best way to preserve the bread and butter of XDA-DEVELOPERS.

I don't know about MIUI, but on CM7 I just tried flashing it on a stable version and got those problem. Later found out that it was for the nightlies. Maybe there is a older version of lordmod that will work for you?
Why not go into the threads of the rom/kernel in question and see if perhaps this problem has already been encountered? It may be faster and provide solutions tailored to your needs.
I doubt you're the first person to have run into issues like this.

Agreed. There's a recent thread here in the general forum, where someone explained that all phones handle things differently so even if someone tells you what they undervolted to on miui,it mite not work for you. I'm really very happy with my Nexus S 4G. It's unlocked and rooted, but otherwise pure stock and I really like it that way.
Coming from the Hero it's a pleasure to have a phone that doesn't require heavy modification to make it perform properly. Still, I miss the thrill of flashing ROM's and kernels.
I would like to try a kernel...mainly to simply o/c a bit, but I don't want it to suffer stable and reliable operation. I recall with the Hero, some of the kernels would adversely affect things like the GPS, making it something I couldn't rely on.
So my question: what kernel can I use that is uncapped, but will otherwise be as close to stock as possible?
Thanks for your thoughts!
Kernels are pretty different over here. I don't even know what's closest to stock. They pretty much all have mods in them. Matr1x kernel is pretty popular. You may have to up the voltage for it if you oc to 14xx. 1200 seemed pretty stable to me with default voltages. Currently franco kernel is pretty popular. You can't oc it, but it seems pretty snappy without oc. GLaDOS is also being used a bit but i've read some mixed reviews and for me at least it did seem a little lagging at times for the short period I ran it. I tried Trinity kernel when I first moved over from the hero and it seemed kind of flaky though it's possible that could have been due to the kang I was running. There are a few others out there. Cm7 kernel has a lot of the same mods cooked in though it's likely not the latest updates. You will see a lot of mention of BLN and Voodoo. There are apps on the market for those features and there's an app nstools that has some kernel config settings you can adjust depending on kernel. Mainly just try to read a lot. Most of the roms and kernels haven't given me any major issues beyond the random reboot, which coming from the hero, just means "normal" lol.

I have tried a few different roms and kernels and for once cm7 runs perfect for me w the supplied kernel. No reboots. Has been stable at 1440 performance for testing but I usually leave it at 1000 on demand.
Yeah they all have this blinking light crap in it now by default which I hate, and the lights turn off and I don't like that either. I want the light on when I'm using the phone and off when I'm not, not the other way around!

I like the bln mod, but I do not like the one that turns off the backlights when using the phone. It's just easier to use the buttons imo and gives a quicker visual reference for everything. Otherwise I mostly am left wondering what is up with all the black space.

I hear you on that, and spent a lot of time reading comments and concerns and problems about the various kernels available. They all seem to pretty much be experimental, with various idiosyncratic problems and lots of bells and whistles such as aforementioned BLN, Voodoo, deep idle, etc.
I thought maybe I was missing something in my search for a kernel that would allow o/c, but not have the stability concerns of a the feature-rich, highly customizable kernels.
I think the Matr1x kernel will be your best option, u can OC it till 1400mhz, what I don't recommend to do, but at 1200/1300mhz its pretty stable.
It also got many options like BLN, BLX, Live OC, touch wake, etc.
But if you don't want them, why you just don't use 'em?
Like just flash the kernel and keep it like it is, and maybe do some overclocking.
