[Q] Help In the Kitchen - Verizon Droid Charge

So I been playing with this and some help as some things I was able to manage to work and some not. Tried coping and pasting some of the files using root explorer as well some worked some didnt. I read that I needed the deodex rom to use kitchen so... I Flashed that with oden as well. Still the same problems occur. I really like to customize my phone but, it seems I can get some things to work right some not. If somone would be so kind to help me out get this straighten out I would HIGHLY appericate it. Im using the EP1W debloated rom with TW4 Launcher. Im missing a few widgets but, the only I really would like to get on there is the Feeds & Updates (preferly not pink header) which seems to be the only one around I can find. In the kitchen I was able to get the battery icon changed and with some copy paste I was able to change the boot animation. The Icons themselfs on the top like time, date etc... didnt take. Thanks in advance if someone can lend me there expertise.

Honestly, UOT I really only find useful for the battery icons. Yeah it can do other things, but its so much easier to just modify the files yourself. I use apk manager and it works great for me. Here is the thread for it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100696 My suggestion, if you want to modify the appearance of your phone is to do it manually via apk manager.

Its actually very easy. I'll help you out. Go on uot and go to the kitchen. Select all the tweaks/themes/icons/boot animations you want. When you are done go to the file upload tab. From here, open up your rom using winrar. Go to framework and drag and drop your framework-res.apk and twframework (something along that line, youll see it.) Then look for systemUI.apk. I think its under the app folder right when you open up your rom with winrar. After you got these files out of the rom then upload them to uot by clicking file upload and then click on system files. When this is done uploading click on summary and if everything is highlighted in green then your good to go, submit the work to the kitchen. It will give you a pickup number, copy that number and click on the pickup tab... From there, just wait for your order to come up. Download the file and flash in recovery. Profit? Yes. I hope this helps.
And if your rom is deodexed, then your good to go. Dont over think things, itll give you a headache.

If you're on the latest version 1.08 of Eaglesblood for 2.3.5, then just push this SystemUI.apk into /system/app , fix the permissions, and reboot, and it should do the trick.
The reason you were having trouble before is because the stock image is a .9.png...I won't go into the details of that, but a little extra work is needed to make those files work.
This file I've included should work for ya.

Ok, so you're on the latest version (1.08) of Eaglesblood for 2.3.5, correct? If you are not 100% sure, you can check in "About Phone" and check on the build.
Using the SystemUI.apk that I uploaded, what is your procedure for getting it into your phone?
Because that file has a transparent status_bar_background.9.png with correct patch handles drawn...not sure why it won't work. I will admit, that I don't have a 2.3.5 nandroid backed up to test. Anyone else?
I think I found the problem. Your rom's SystemUI/res/layout/status_bar_tracking.xml points to shade_bg.png for the background. I made that image transparent for you, and recompiled the apk. I really hope this works for you. I have to admit, I"m feeling rather dumb right now.
Yes I'm on 1.08 and my exact procedure was I downloaded the file on my phone, I went to root explorer to the xda download folder where it was located, I copied it to system/app and overwrote tthe current systemui.apk that was there, at that time, a constant endless force closes occurred so I had to pull my battery and rebooted that way, as it rebooted, the notification bar was gone, I then went to the systemui and changed permissions to where the first column is all checked and the first of the 2nd ccolumn is checked, I then pulled the battery again (cuz of the apn issue without the hard reset) and when it came back, nothing changed, so I fixed permissions via rom manager, to no avail......its frustrating!

holy crap it worked.....a million times THANKS!!! You effin rock dude! thanks for taking the time to help me! So to my understanding, u just edited the shade_bg file???? that was it??
Yeh, essentially, all I would have needed to do was edit that shade_bg.png file. But I didn't know to look there until I was forced to try to save face after giving you bad advice, lol. Now I know that some roms will point to status_bar_background.png, some will point to shade_bg, and some even simply define a hex color code...just have to decompile the SystemUI.apk, and look in res/layout/status_bar_tracking.xml to see where it's looking....and then edit that file.

so now that i know it works, i was wondering if i wanted to create one, do i make it 200 x 200 like the current shade_bg file is? i kinda want to make one with a black background with semi transparency! I tried editing the shade_bg file u made, with a program called Gimp, but it didnt work
Can you give me your exact method to doing this? I created an image from gimp, i saved it as shade_bg.png, so basically , i extracted the systemui.apk from root explorer, it put the extracted in my sd card, so i plugged in my phone in my mac, and i took that folder from my sd card, now from here, the extracted file is a zip file, so i double clicked it b/c macs can unzip files easily, so in the folder, i placed my shade_bg file into the appropriate folder.....now this is where i think i mess up, what do u do from here? I "compressed" the systemui folder to make it back into a zip, and then placed it into my sd card, i then "renamed" the file thru my phone from a .zip to a .apk, now in root explorer there is usually an icon that shows up next to the name of the files, now when i changed it, a green android icon showed up, but on the file that you had edited for me, there was a "settings" icon, u know, the standard icon for the settings app in android! i put the apk in the system/app and it didnt work, even after permissions set up! hmmm.....i promise, this will probably be my last post!
please keep in mind, i have a mac, and i do have that 7zip u mentioned in the development thread, but its called EZ7Z.....just in case i need it
If you are doing it the way you described, then you need to find a way to zip with no compression. 7 zip does that with the "store" setting...not sure about the mac version.
You don't wanna know where this was sent from.

[How To] Activate Overscroll in all GB Sense Roms

Hey guys, was reading through the threads today and noticed a few comments where people got confused weather overscroll is in the new GB OTA roms or not.
The answer to that is yes. The overscroll has been in ALL GB roms since the beginning, including GB Sense roms.
We could never see them in the HTC Sense Gingerbread roms though because HTC hid them(not removed them) by changing the color to black and then Indexing them.
So where are they?
They are located in an apk called framework-res.apk. This apk is located in the system/framework folder of your rom. You can get the apk from your rom by doing one of a few things.
1.
Code:
adb remount
adb pull /system/framework/ framework-res.apk
2. Use the Root Explorer app to copy the apk from your system/framework folder and paste it on your SD Card and then just transfer it to your computer.
3. Using 7Zip, extract the apk from your original rom zip while its on your computer, if you originally downloaded it to your computer.
Extract framework-res.apk and navigate to framework-res\res\drawable-hdpi.
Look for these two images: overscroll_edge.png and overscroll_glow.png. Thats the overscroll images. Also look at any of these new OTA GB roms and you'll see what I mean by HTC has blacked them out. Kinda messed up huh?
How to make them colored?
Using a program such as gimp, open the images and change them from 'indexed' mode to 'rgb' mode and then just change the hue to whatever you like.
After that's done just open the original framework-res.apk and drag and drop your new custom overscroll images in to their proper folder. See? very simple.
or...
Grab the framework-res out of a CM GB rom and grab those same images above and toss them into your framework-res.apk
After you've made your changes just do one of these to put the framework-res.apk back into your rom.
1.
Code:
adb remount
adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework/
2. Drop the apk into a pre-made flashable zip that you know installs to system/framework and flash through recovery.
Easy huh?

Well you can extract with 7Zip. And yea just pushing it back in with adb is probably the best way unless your good with flashables.
Edit: You want to know how to get that framework-res.apk? Just pull it out of your rom using Root Explorer or extract it from the actual rom zip that you downloaded in the first place. Its located in system/framework.
ok...i figured that part out...
now when in gimp i cant seem to see any color change...
all i see is the grayscale blocks and a black stripe(edge) or curved part(glow)
i dont see what any of the color change options are doing...
and so you know, i dont know crap about image editing...cant ya tell??
EDIT- thats exactly what i did...dropbox to the computer and now im stuck...lol

Ok do this:
Open the image in gimp. Go to the tool bar at the top and hit image. Do you see 'Mode'? Select that and then change to rgb mode. You'll notice how the image goes from blockish to blurry. Now you can edit your colors
Just play with colorize and brightness until you get what you want.
it doesnt do that... stays blocked when i do that

Ah ok I see what your saying. You can still do any color you want. Just make sure the image is in rgb mode and then pick whatever color you want and choose the largest blurry brush and draw a straight line across the top of the image. Look at my example below. You can even use my example if you want.
Do the same thing for the over glow edge. Just use a normal brush and only color the top of the image. About two pixels should be good. Again look at my example.
And if that isn't working for you, just grab the images out of a CM rom and just change the color on them to whatever you like.
feel a little dumb here but what exactly is over scroll?
is it when you are scrolling and get to the end and you see the color flash over briefly, like you are bumping into a momentary light switch...?

So I just pushed my framework-res.apk right down over the orig and rebooted and that worked.
But I suspect there is a reason why you want to install it via a zip right?
Not trying to be annoying, but more to learn and actually understand this wonderful world of Android.
Otherwise, I really do like the over-scroll.. Especially when I am browsing folders using Root Explorer and NOT viewing by alphabetical but file size for instance.
Thank you for sharing this information wildstang83!

Well just that some people are more comfortable flashing vs actually adb pushing stuff.
And thanks. Always glad to help if I can.
Great info in this thread - thanks wildstang.
Sorry to ask such a entry level question - in regards to:
2. Drop the apk into a pre-made flashable zip that you know installs to system/framework and flash through recovery.
Where would one acquire a pre-made flashable zip ?
EDITED: answered my own question thru trial and error.
Well, its whatever. People on XDA would much rather bash those that need help than to actually help them. I'm still learning but I can't get anywhere with these types of comments. So until then I'll be over at themikmik.com.
Follow me if you truely care. If not, nice knowing ya.

Ninjamorph help

I'm trying to remove the clock on the notification bar and I specifically remember the instructions from somewhere on the Mikmik forums, on how to do so with Ninjamorph. I tried going to; system/framework.apk/res/layout (I think it's in the right order) and I see no "status_bar.xml" to switch it out with. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Oh yeah, I tried a zip to remove it, but it resulted in bootloops and I'm running SSv7.5. Thanks and God bless in advance.
EDIT: I found the post thank you Father . It was in the Evo section of the Mikmik forums. I guess I will post it, in case someone needs the info;
"Anyway, you just need two things. One is the mod you want, so you'll need to download steal25's mod, two is Ninjamorph, its a free app on the market. Oh, you'll also need a file explorer. Root explorer is the best but es will do. Use the file explorer to extract the systemui apk from steal25's zip. Go to the extracted apk, long press and extract all. Make sure the extracted files are in an easy to find area. Exit the file explorer. Launch ninjamorph, authorize superuser, and start checks. Then select new project, go to system, then apps, and select systemui apk. When the select item you'd like to change comes up, select res, then select layout, and find and select the statusbar.xml. Then it will ask you to select the item to replace it with, navigate to where you put the extracted files from the mod, and go select the modded statusbar.xml. You won't need to make any other changes, so hit back after it applies, then hit finish project and select the newly modded systemui.apk. Hit yes to overwrite, yes to zipalign, and no to clean up. Then your phone will start acting crazy, its ok it happens when you change stuff in that apk with this app. Just yank the battery and reboot." - (urrgevo)

[TUT] So you want to start themeing in Windows?

Hey guys! Someone recently posted that they wanted to start to making their own themes and I posted a very long reply and figured, might as well post a "somewhat easy to understand" tutorial here for everyone.
So you want to make your own themes?
First off, it is important to know that if you plan on porting any themes over and releasing it to the masses, that you get permission from the theme owner first!!
DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR PHONE EXPLODES OR MELT! lol
NOTE: IF YOU'RE A NOOB (you know if you are) DO NOT MESS WITH ANY IMAGE THAT ENDS IN ".9" UNTIL YOU READ UP ON THEM.......A LOT! IF YOU'RE JUST REPLACING AN IMAGE, THEN READ ON.
A good write up on .9 (9 patch) images can be found here:
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/draw9patch.html
What you will need:
Apkmanager: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701
7zip: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
An empty flashable zip: http://www.multiupload.com/DBEMBUOCND
Lot's of time on your hands!
GETTING STARTED:
Apkmanager is going to be your "all-in-one" tool for making a theme in Windows.
(I'll go into all the options of apkmanager a little later)
The process you need to follow is actually kind of simple. It's just very time consuming.
First you will need to make the images that you want (unless you are porting a theme).
Now what you need to do is one way or another, get the framework-res.apk and the SystemUI.apk from your phone, if you want to theme the launcher then you need to get the TouchWiz30Launcher.apk as well. (If you don't want to mess with using adb, use Root Explorer, just copy the apk then paste on your sdcard, then copy and paste from your sdcard onto your pc.)
Extract apkmanager to somewhere easy like the desktop and you should end up with a folder named "apkmanager" or whatever.
Inside that folder, you should have the following folders:
Other
place-apk-here-for-modding
place-apk-here-for-signing
place-apk-here-to-batch-optimize
place-ogg-here
projects
Then the following files:
log
Script
DO NOT MODIFY THE NAMES OF ANY OF THESE FILES OR FOLDERS OR NOTHING WILL WORK!
Take the 3 files that you got from your phone and place them in the "place apk here for modding" folder.
Double click to open the "Script" file
Press "22" and hit enter to set your current job
Select either 1,2 or 3 for whichever apk you want to start on first
Select "9" to decompile
Once decompile is done, go inside the "projects" folder and now you have a folder inside there with whatever the name is of the apk you just decompiled.
Inside that folder are the images and XML files you need to replace (you might not have to edit any of the XML files, that's a little more advanced unless you already know how to.)
Most of the images you will need to edit will be in the following folders of each apk:
res>drawable
res>drawable-hdpi
You can look around in there and see what all needs to be done. I will get into themeing the contacts and phone and all that a little later.
Once you get everything done and you're ready to test it out, you need to go back to that "Script" file in apkmanager and open it back up. Now you're going to do pretty much the same stuff you did when you were decompiling the apk, in order to compile the apk.
In the Script for apkmanager, you're going to press "22" and hit enter, then select which file you want to compile first by either pressing 1,2 or 3.
Select the file and hit enter, then press "11" and press enter to compile the apk. As long as you didn't mess anything up during the process of changing stuff, you shouldn't receive any errors. If you do, you need to figure out what it was you messed up on and fix it.
Go through and compile the apks that you edited. Once that is done, you will go to your "place apk here for modding" folder again and you will notice that you have 3 new files in there:
unsignedframework-res.apk
unsignedSystemUI.apk
unsignedTouchWiz30Launcher.apk
Remember that empty flashable zip you downloaded earlier? Now you need it.
Right click on the flashable zip and mouse over "7zip" and click on "Open Archive"
Take the unsignedSystemUI.apk and the unsignedTouchWiz30Launcher.apk and place them in the "app" folder. Now rename those to their original names:
SystemUI.apk
TouchWiz30Launcher.apk
Now take that unsignedframework-res.apk and place it in the "framework" folder of the flashable zip. Rename that one to "framework-res.apk."
Now you can close out of the flashable zip file and place it on your sdcard.
Reboot into recovery, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik, now go to "mounts and storage" and mount /system.
Now go back and flash the zip file you just put on your sdcard.
Since you wiped your cache and your dalvik, the reboot will take a little while. You should now be good to go!
NOTE: Since I did not create apkmanager, I will not be able to answer many questions about it but feel free to ask. If I don't have an answer for you, Just go back to the post above where you downloaded it, and post your question there.
As stated earlier in my post, I will get more in depth about all this stuff as soon as I have a little more time to post everything.
Please enjoy and happy themeing!!!!!!
Thank you for this spc.

In ApkManager you don't need to decompile the apk's. You just need to extract them because all you're doing is messing with the images.

Just so everyone knows, here soon I'm also going to be posting a tutorial on how to center the clock and move around your icons and stuff in the statusbar!
I had all the knowledge in the OP and decided I was going to start theming. Then I saw the literally hundreds of PNG's i would have to edit and decided it isn't for me lol. I get bored too easily to spend that much time in photoshop/gimp haha.
That said, I really appreciate what themers do.

It's the "updater-script"
To get to the updater script, of the zip file. Open the zip file with 7zip and go to:
META-INF>com>google>android
Open the updater script with Notepad++ or whatever text editor you use. Only the edit the text that says "place your text here" or you can mess up the entire zip file and it won't flash.

How to make a theme?

I'm pretty handy with Photoshop (I do graphic design) and I was wondering how I would go about making a theme. I am on Melvins stock ROM and I don't use a launcher. It was so simple on the iPhone, so is there a method similar to that of the iPhone?
Hey I'm in the same boat as you being design graduate myself. Its pretty easy actually you just need to get to know all the apk files and what goes where. The framework-res.apk, systemUI.apk house the majority of the files overall that you will most likely wanna mod. Then you have app specifics. Anyway here is a little vid to get you started very basic like. Its the dev M&S from the Tmob thread. His themes are super slick
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSB8iQvpU9k
That is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much. It's actually fairly easy, and I'm glad I don't have to use winSCP anymore.
Quick question though, what do I download to get the script and all that? And the SDK part?
I downloaded the APK manager and I have no idea how to get the framework into the script. Any ideas?
well you should watch the video! if you don't wanna watch than.
Copy framwork-res.apk from system>framework folder.
Past it in the apk folder where it says "Put here for Modding" and than you can open up the command prompt and go from there!
Hope this helps!\
Make sure to do nandroid because messing with framwork will give you softbrick and you will be F*****!

lol I was like the vid shows it too! And also you will need to do a search on how to mod .9 png files. They have code in them so if you mod them in photoshop ( I did this at first) they end up all warped and busted. At first I recommend the "extract" for starters in APK manager. Gives you access to all the png files and such. Once you get more familiar then choose "decompile" so you can edit the xml files (change text color etc). Hope that helps
I will be closely following this thread as I am learning to theme as well, let's help each other!
Does anyone know how to do the videos first part in "apk multi tool"?
Actually nvm I figured it out
I did watch the video. There are some steps he skips, however. Like selecting the framework, he never tells you how to get it in the folder. I figured it out, eventually.. but I still don't know how to get it onto my phone using the SDK that he uses. That is my question.
Ive been at this for about an hour lol. I figured out how to push the file but I couldnt do it from /tools/ so I tried pushing the apk from /platform-tools/ and it worked the only problem is that I edited the battery colors just to test and see if it would work. They were supposed to be red but their still the same color.
Btw to the above post, go to cmd and type "cd c:/" and then wherever your sdk is located. Unless thats not what your talking about then idk =/
Update: It worked...but...bootloops so I had to push the original frameworkres and it booted up and when I re-pushed the one I edited it still gives me a bootloop
I've started building themes. Everything has worked fine so far. I themed my gmail apk blue. And have been working on framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk and twframework-res.apk. Far from done but I've made changes to all three and pushed them to my phone no problem. Im using pirateghosts stock Rom space_pirate i believe is the Rom name

I'm using alien 5.5 and I'm still getting bootloops trying to push my modded framework-res apk.
The cake is a lie.
