[Q] Hurricane 1.6 FatFree issues - General Questions and Answers

Sory to bloat this thread any more than it already is, and waste the Mods' time...but apparently, I don't have enough "ForumCred" to be allowed to post in the *proper* Forum & Thread (Epic 4G Android Development.)
I'm having a couple of issues with the above-mentioned new ROM.
First, and most important, I have no Internet capability that isn't handled by another App. I can do Youtube, Gmail, banking, etc...But if I try and use the Google Search Widget, or (most of my) Bookmarks, or even the basic Internet app, nothing happens. No FC, no nothing. (Yes, I've DLed/Installed the FlashPlayer.)
Now, a couple of things that the ROM doesn't support (Not their problem, I understand that's part of the ROM's design):
The ROM has no support for Live Wallpapers. ...is there a way to add that functionality; or is it necessary to be embedded in the ROM itself?
Also, I was hoping to get the Sprint Hotspot hack; is that available seperately? (I did get the Android Wireless Tether app, so this may not be as much of an issue now...)
Thanks in advance!

ERA G1 Firmware

Era G1 is polish T-Mobile G1. Is there any newer ROM's version for this phone? I have this one (look at picture).
You can flash any ROM available on this forum. Especially JF's versions!
I am user of G1 in Poland as well...
Regards and good luck!

If you'll be able to flash JF's rom can you post it or let us know any other way here
2 simple questions
Hello,
Hello,
I am thinking about buying myself T-mobile G1. What I need to know before that is:
firstly: is there any way to switch off constant internet connection on G1 as the internet services in my country are quite expensive and I would like to have control over them? I dont really need sync with my google account (I see some other advateges on this phone than "just" that) and would like to use Internet only when i really need it (not when G1 thinks I need
secondly: is there any way to update G1 OS via standard PC? As far as I heard each update weighs some MB, which i prefer to download on my PC and then to G1
I've been looking for answers to my questions over the Internet (xda developers etc) but didn't really find a direct answer.
Would appreciate your time and effort.
Yours Sincerely
Yes. By default only the t-mobile apns are set up. As long as you don't actually try to enable your networks apn, you won't get 3g\edge. You could just go in and delete all the apns just to make sure.
Yes. Google stores the update files on their websites and we usually find them a little after they come out. But you could just do everything over wi-fi including gmail, browsing, etc.

Need native Exchange support help please

So I am brand new to Android and like it so far. I have a Vodafone HTC magic 32b. But really miss Exchange native support.
So my question is can anyone point me to ROMS that have Native Exchange support. I hear Android 2 can do this and like the sound of that. But also I hear that some 1.6 one will do it.
Please remember that I am new to android and I have found the HTC_Sapphire_Hacking site. I have flashed plenty of windows mobile in my time (those days are gladly gone now) but not done android.
Thanks
Just download dwang's rom (check my signature) or Cyanogenmod (any version) and extract the Mail.apk from it, and install on your phone.
You can extract it just by going into the zip file and having a look around, can't remember the exact location but it was easy to find.
To install the apk either use "adb" from the android SDK (adb install mail.apk) or copy it to your sd card and install it using Astro.
Hope this helps.
PS. you are better off posting in sappire general for this as your questions are not related to rom development.
Thanks for that
Great answer and will open up a new thread in the the apropriate thread as I get an error saying
--------------------------------
Application not installed
Work email could not be installed on this phone
---------------------------------
I guess i may need to flash yet
Thanks again
Need FULL Exchange support (Mail, Contacts, and Calendar) ?
If you need REAL Exchange support (not just email), you really need an HTC (not GOOGLE) branded ROM. Nearly every HERO ROM fits this criteria, but the following link provides a non-Hero ROM (EVERYTHING works, and it's FAST because it's meant for the sapphire). I've used it on two 32B Sapphires now for a couple months is it's the best ROM I can find that provides full exchanges support. Aside from not having SenseUI, I can't see any reason to run another ROM yet either. If Eclair/2.0 get perfected, that would be a reason to move because it appears to have native Exchange support built in (whereas the HTC ROMs have the support because HTC added it, not Google). I did a LOT of research to come to this conclusion.

Now that sounds like my answer, will do this tonight.
Thanks rainabba
One more question guys?
I am all ready to go but need advice on the "wipe device" option on the recovery rom.
There are half a dozen options. Which should i choose?
Thanks

This was exactly the information I was looking for. Not what I was hoping to hear, but what I was looking for.
I rooted and installed Cyanogen on my previously virgin Rogers Magic 32A, and was a little disappointed to see Exchange Calendar sync gone along with the other HTC trims.
Don't get me wrong - Cyanogen is awesome, but I'm really looking forward to a fully working Eclair ROM now... I think the ROM you link to is 1 step forward, 2 steps back.

Yep, I couldn't give up all the Cyanogen goodness just because of lameExchange.
Best scenario I have come to love:
-Keep Cyanogen w/ Work Email
-Run Google Calendar Synch 2-way on the Corpo Laptop
-Export Outlook Contacts to Gmail (include frequent Co. Directory contacts)
I just keep working right along; emailing, scheduling, contacting without a hiccup (meetings pop-up, no duplicate contact bs, etc).
Exchange support
The options (I've used all three of them)...
1). Buy an app from the market that offers Exchange support (Roadsync is only US$10, works fine... safest option, as it doesn't involve flashing a ROM).
2). Get a custom rom that supports it. The 2 general types that I've used include Hero ROMs and ROMs based upon the Rogers phones. Hero is too slow for me, however, and the Rogers ROMs don't even have Donut yet.
3). Get an Eclair ROM. I'm currently using Eugene's AOSP, and while there are some issues (no camera, sync loop), the Exchange support is pretty nice. It's not completely clear to me, but I think the Exchange calendar suppport comes from a Moto app that was sucked off the Droid. Eclair offers calendar and mail sync with Exchange natively.
You can choose which one works best for you. For the longest time, I was running cyanogen with Roadsync, and had no problems whatsoever.
@hackitall and @jstegeman
Good posts both. Thanks for that.
I think for me I like hackitall's kluge... at least until a more stable Eclair ROM is out. It doesn't have to be cyanogen, but at least stable with all of the "normal" features like camera, etc.
At the breakneck development pace, I'd expect this sooner than later. Happy times.

Not to take anything from the great Cyanogen, but what "goodness" is lost with the Rogers ROM (or do you even know)?
BTW, your solution is beyond a PITA. I know because I tried it and a number of other "solutions" before realizing that it was all a waste of time for someone like myself that needs REAL syncing (not exporting contacts for example). Also, if you're willing to pay for a Google corp account, might as well save the hassle and buy a license for cemaphore. It does all the syncing w/o any of the BS.

Two words: Google Navigation
It's totally awesome and requires 1.6... at least I haven't seen anyone supporting it on 1.5 yet.
Ahh
Ok, i guess if I wasn't already running 2.0 on a droid, didn't have such a need for Exchange support, and/or didn't already have nDrive or my Alpine Navi unit, that would make sense
Well seing as I asked the question I thought I would say thanks for all the great help and advice.
I have ended up with roadsync on the origional rom.
I did try every rom out there 2 buggy, HERO Sssllllllooooowwwwww built in exchange support on 1.6 did not work with exchange at work (not enough security)
Great fun

Q Stock UI with Market & adhoc wifi?

(Note I'm still into my second week of owning any Android device, so I'm a relative noob).
I've modded my G-tab with the TnT 2.2.0 from this thread.
It's my wife's device (she's not too technical) and she's not thrilled with the TnT vanilla-Android UI. I tend to agree with her, the vanilla 2.2 seems more usable for a smartphone. Viewsonic's stock UI seems better for a tablet. Even apps like Gallery crash a lot vs the stock Pictures app.
So in her use case, the only real value in the TnT mod is Market and ad hoc wifi (she uses Joikuspot as an ad hoc hotspot on her cellphone). We can live with performance lags for the minimal use she has.
Is it possible to mod the stock app with just Market and adhoc Wifi? Is a matter of taking the latest stock image from here, adding Market-specific apks from here (which ones are they?), and adding adhoc wifi from here? Or is there more to it?
Anyone know of roadblocks or tips before I attempt this? Ideally, I'd like to create a package of apks that I can run after each Viewsonic ota update.
BTW, there is a better gallery app available that does not crash, but here is what you want.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861993
Thanks - still evaluating my options here:
1) Where is the better gallery?
2) Are there any good training guides on assembling your own builds? The thread you linked is definitely closer to my goal, and I'll probably take that as a first step. But I'd like to eventually learn how to do a quick self-made Market and wifi mod only, so I can minimize the amount that I run the G-tab non-stock.
3) The link refers to the things that seem like admin-type capabilities. Any need in a self-made build to still keep this stuff running? The modded G-tab is my wife's, and it seems safer (eg: less virus prone) to disable admin capabilities that she won't use day-to-day. I don't yet know what each thing does (busybox, root access, adb mounting, xbin folder, etc).

Altek A14 Leo section?

Hey
The first (Android) smartphone with camera that can really compete with the digital cameras and no section for it?
Modding it would be great
Altek A14 Leo
Altek Leo Section
regarding the serious problems the Altek Leo has, as no google apps, not even market, no rooting published, no adobe flash, firefox will not install and so on,
a section would be useful for the distessed owners of this camera phone which
is more a fumble phone than a smart phone. Its advantages are a very good lens, an outstanding CCD chip, a xenon flash and professional camera software.
True, is buggy
I bought one actually and despite it being pretty buggy, I just absolutely love the camera.
Definitely needs some software love though:
1) Interface is pretty sluggish and 2.1 isn't helping, the latest android performance improvements would be nice.
2) Touch-screen is strangely inaccurate. Swype was a must for me.
3) Battery life is pretty bad (not certain how much a newer Android would help, but any amount of powersaving fixes would help).
4) Buttons/widgets to lock the screen (e.g. Extended Controls) don't work.
5) The camera button doesn't open the camera when the phone is locked (debatable I guess, but imo, the camera button should just open the camera, period).
6) Default alarm clock doesn't ring randomly.
7) Not to mention apps randomly crashing, strange animation bugs in the Album viewer, no google apps, terrible GPS, etc.
But despite those, I've managed to work my way round them and am in love with it.
Alex
I have one of these and I do like the quirkyness .
I would love to improve the experience by modding.
Quirkyness fits well
To continue the list (more than enough for a forum)
- Backups by Titanium, AVG or Nandroid do not work because i have no idea
how to root the Altek Leo.
- WLAN range is still very short and does not always an automatic reconnect.
- I could not manage to make any browser play flash files, but the moboplayer
plays flv files well.
- Apps like soundhound say the microphone is blocked.
About half of the apps i need are not available because they will not install
or they are exclusively available over google market and getting them from
file hosters seems a bit risky to me. Most of this problems seem to be caused
by the small software space of 120 MB for files and 83 MB for running
applications.
But i will keep the Altek Leo and use it because the camera prooved itself
as outstanding among mobile phones.
- I use the application stores Applanet, Amazone Appstore, Handango,
SlideMe SAM and the tools Memory Booster Lite, Android Tweak.
Does anyone discovered any other useful helpers for this half of an
ANDROID device ?
"We do not need any adobe flash, we have got a real xenon flash."
Where To Buy
Does anyone know where to pick up/order one of these units?
Here To Buy
Search at Ebay, you will need a Paypal account.
I bought mine from Wifigadget.
Eason of Yupitek provides International Customer Service,
have a look at the facebook pinwall.
Thanks for the tips! Really like Memory Booster and Swype.
If you're on a mac, the "missing sync" from markspace is well worth the buy - particularly given that there does not seem to be a way to add a Google account under accounts and sync - it's missing on my altek leo! Anyone elses too?
Also recommend "Lookout" if you're worried about virus from no easy way to get apks other than file sharing sites.
Despite the quirks, very happy with this all-in-one device - music player + phone + camera - 3 down to 1! Fantastic!
Vignette
Sidenote, 'Vignette' is the perfect app for this device.
It doesn't fix any of the quirkiness, but it's a photo manipulation tool which complements the fantastic camera perfectly.
You can take your pics and then touch them up making the phone a studio for all things photography.
You can purchase it from the AndAppStore.
By poor battery life, how many days do you get out of it?
root and market
Has anyone tried the Gingerbreak exploit? I heard it might work on older devices. Also, if you don't trust file sharing sites and want stuff from the market. You could try running an emulator and installing the Market on that, then sideloading the APKs. I haven't tried it myself yet, but it seems there are a lot of people doing this. Here's one HOWTO which is specific to Mac but I think it's prety much the same or at least you should be able to use the same system image. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1387830/how-to-install-android-market-app-on-the-emulator there are lots of other links if you google "android market emulator" I don't have the Leo yet because they're sold out in Taiwan, but I've got mine on order. I'm most interested whether the google apps work at all if they're sideloaded. I've just sort of bricked my older Cyanogen device. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Oh, here's a Windows specific link - http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/10004/accessing-android-market-from-android-sdk/
and be careful with Gingerbreak!
There's also UniversalAndRoot to try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598
and SuperOneClick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Poor battery-life
@rocky7st
It depends on usage. Light usage is ok. Any sort of medium/heavy usage won't get you through the day.
I bought it from an ebay seller which sent me 2 batteries which was helpful:
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230614421067
It's is useful since it allows me to occasionally geek out with the camera, playing with apps or using the GPS (i.e. 2 hours straight) and and it'll completely run out of juice by late afternoon.
I usually wait till I get home to recharge it on those occasions, but it's been very useful to be able to switch to the backup battery if I'm out and about and I really need to use the phone.
@everyone_else
On the topic of side-loading apps, my gf has an Android phone with a market on it, so I use the "Astro" file manager which allows you to "Backup" the apks, and then I transfer them to my phone via email.
I've been unable to get my device to show up with adb, so not far enough to try SuperOneClick.
UniversalAndRoot says something like "unable to root"
Z4Root says "running root exploit" and does not progress..
That's bad news but good to know at the same time. Hopefully there will be a method soon. Still waiting on mine but I unbricked my older one. Seems to be an almost total lack of hands-on reviews (outside of a trade show) so I thought someone might be interested in this one. Also, I emailed the author to see whether and how he installed the Market app.
http://120x160.com/old-entries/216-hardware-review-altek-leo-a14-camera-phone
Cheers for the reply jackflap. Do you guys know anything about the Android 2.2 upgrade, I've heard Altek is meant to be releasing it next month.
Okay, I got SuperOneClick working so I have root. ADB worked in windows after installing the Altek software.
ADB in linux still cannot find the phone..
So I tried installing various vending.apk files but keep getting MISSING SHARED LIBRARY or out of date SDK.
@daktak I've been trying to develop for the Leo but have not been able to get ADB to work in windows. Where did you obtain the Altek software?
Hi All,
I am a complete noob here and non technical.
Recently bought an altek leo with the sole purpose of loading an app called Passport Photo Plus and using the device to create passport photopgraphs and to send by Bluetooth to a compatible printer.
We have been doing this on other android smartphones but wanted to use the altek due to its camera features.
It appears that our desired app is ony avaiable on Market.
Being non -technical we have tried and failed to find a way to install this app on our leo.
I'm sure there may be other apps available but we specifically want this one due to it's features.
Does anybody know if this can be done, and if so how? Can anybody point me in the right direction (in easy to understand non tech terms please!)
Would happily pay a small fee for succesful step by step instructions (not sure if I can post that here, if not please ignore / mods pls delete).
Many thanks in advance.

Hotspot Hack

For several months, my hotspot hacked worked just fine on T-Mobile, but now it's not working. Usually it was built into the ROMs and there wasn't any issues. Wondering if anyone has a fix. I'm currently running the newest version of CAF Blisspop, stock kernel.
So what model/brand phone do you have? What version of Android are you on? If you can provide that info, you should get some guidance here in the forum or by private message. I'm sure you've searched the forums too. Think of some keywords devs use to describe that specific ROM feature and then search again. Seems to me this info isn't readily available for obvious reasons. But you can find it if you're persistent.
FWIW, I dont believe T-Mobile is changing the way they look for tethering violations, they're still using user agents and overall data usage as far as I know. I've tried various modded apps and various native HotSpot mods, and the only common theme T-Mobile has cited to me is the user agent. I've been warned three times, and thabkfully they still haven't taken away my unlimited data. I personally don't bother anymore, I have unlimited data and just download anything I need to my phone and copy and paste it over to my computer while connected. Unless there is some brilliant tethering mod out there that's undetectable, sooner or later they'll figure you out. I think once you hit 30 GB of data in a month, they watch your account. That's a ton of data to use on a phone alone in a month unless you stream movies/videos constantly. Wish it weren't this way, but you've got to play their game to stay in the game. Just my two cents.
