Hey Everyone,
Im new to android, and having a small issue, I am attempting to root my wifi xoom, I get up to the part where its time to select android recovery so that I can select the root zip, however when I use the volume down key to scroll the options the only 3 available are NVflash, RSD and Fastboot, theres no android recovery option I have searched the forums and googled it, but I seem to be the only one with this issue, my xoom is running 3.1 and bought in Aus, dont know if this makes a difference? any help would be greatly appreciated, I have got an OTG cable and would like to mount my external HDD so I need to get it rooted. Should probably mention I have unlocked it too.
Cheers
ha i just posted a thread with exactly the same issue. Hopefully one of us will get an answer!

Your post was already answered in the General section. No need to post twice.
The answer did not fix my problem however. Still stuck at the same place as before just like terreboo. Possibly theres an issue with this type of xoom? I bought mine in australia as well. According to my about tablet info it says this:
Firmware Configuration Version: GAS_ASIA_UCAHUBLWFRTIRD_P006 so im assuming this is an asian tab? Just wondering terreboo what does yours say under firmware configuration?
yeah sorry didnt mean to post it in the general section, I alerted it to the mods to delete they just havent got around to it yet, yeah mate I have the same version as you, although I doubt this is the reason, we cant be the only two in Aus trying to root them? I think the problem probably lies else where, it has been suggested I'm getting the timing wrong, so I'll try again and post back my progress or lack of.
---------- Post added at 10:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:45 PM ----------
I have tried it 10+ times now, I'm confident its not the timing of pressing the down key on reboot having varied the length of time everytime I tried, possibly its because of the firmware version? Im at a loss, I have followed the instructions of the root guide to the letter and seem to be one of the only ones with this problem!
this is the guide im using
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078019
Same problem here!
I have the same problem guys.. Any solution?? The developers some help??
Im using the same guide btw....
I've freaked out im trying this for 8 hours now and no results....
im having a similar problem that my factory reset is corrupt or something because it doesnt actually DO anything.
I did the long root method as opposed to the supposedly easier method and thank heavens I got through it unharmed. I was ****ting my pants the whole way through. I wish I were more savvy with this so I can offer help. If I were u guys I would PM the devs from TIAMAT. They are probably the most knowledgeable ppl here to ask.
solution
OK guys i have a solution a guy from #xoom channel told me to write in windows command line
abd recovery reboot
And it worked!
I'm currently posting this from my costum rommed xoom

Would that be adb recovery reboot? Can you give more information?
assuming you have adb setup on your computer already. Plug your xoom into your comp and make sure its in debug mode. Settings-applications-development. Open a command prompt and type in "adb reboot recovery" without quotes. Your device will then reboot into recovery mode.
I will say I'm having the same issue. I flash the new recovery and I don't see it in the menu. I'm running a US wifi xoom.

Yes that's right. I followed the guide and i waited 3 seconds but i never had the option 'android recovery so i turned on the device and this guy told me to run this command from cmd.
So after that xoom rebooted into clockwork recovery state and i flashed thecostum rom.
According to the guide that were using, if you allow the xoom to boot fully into honeycomb it reinstalls the stock recovery, and you need to redo the process all over. Also, you need to be in honeycomb to use the ADB command, if your in fastboot it won't detect the xoom. This did not work for me. Anyone else try it?
no luck for me here either. I can flash recovery successfully (according to the prompt) no problems there. I just have the exact same trouble booting into it as above.
Vol Down key combo doesn't work and if you leave the OS to boot straight after install, CWM is replaced by stock recovery. No fun at all.
Any further news or suggestions on this?

Same as my Xoom, opened a thread just for it, but no one can help
much easier... download rom manager and click boot to recovery haha ...
If not rooted,
adb reboot recovery via a cmdline window works a treat _

Just make sure that Rom Manager doesn't trick you into flashing a non-compatible updated recovery version.
In my experience it doesn't play well with the Xoom.
If all you want is a non manual way to boot into recovery from the OS, download Quick Boot (if rooted) or if you're already on the Tiamat Moray Rom, it's something you can choose when you press the power button on the back.
the problem is that for me and others with this issue, you can't use adb to boot recovery. If you install recovery from fastboot then boot into the regular OS without booting to recovery and rooting, the OS replaces CWM with the stock recovery. This means if you use adb or another app to reboot into recovery, you just get stock recovery which is totally useless. I can't load recovery or root using anay of the universal methods I have come accross. We need a way to boot into recovery without having it replaced with stock or another rooting method or something. Any other ideas?

Look, this is how I had to flash CWM image file- through adb,/fastboot just like you. No matter what you say, it comes down to a question of timing.
I'm not sure about everyone else with the no recovery option, but timing just isnt the issue for me. Without a lie i've tried to enter recovery over 50 times at various points, 95% of those attempts were at the 3 second mark that is stated in the xda guide we've been using. I'm aware of one other person here whos tried it MUCH more than me with exactly the same result.
However theres one thing that we could narrow it down with. Thus far the people having this issue are using the asian firmware xoom's. Could everyone else having this problem on this thread say whether or not theyre using the asian firmware too? Maybe the asian firmware can't be rooted this way?

I'm sure theres a few of you out there who've bricked their Xoom in the same way I did:
Locking the boot loader after having custom rom and kernal running on it or something similar and come across an error upon boot that says
Failed image LNX 0x0002
RSD mode 2 initiated
or something to that respect
Then tried to do fastboot oem unlock, only to have the Xoom not be recognised.
The solution for me was to make a Motorola Factory cable as per guide here
For some reason, the Xoom would be instantly recognised by my computer and all fastboot commands would work, as well as RSD Lite (Did not do me any good as there is no Xoom Wifi SBF released)
That should fix the booting problem
If it still does not, follow one of the other guides on how to flash using fastboot, another rom now that you have fastboot working again!
Cheers!

So I went and bought the factory cable from the Black Hat guys, and luckily haven't had the need to use it. Any advice you'd like to give in case I need to at some point?
I guess the only advice I can give is: don't re-lock the boot loader when you have a custom rom loaded
You don't need the cable. I have recovered 4 times myself and walked many others through on irc. We all use the stock cable that came with the device.

It wouldn't recognise any fastboot commands nor the RSD Lite program for me.
But if it does, then thats good.
Merely a heads up for those who were in the same situation I was

you won't care to share how you did it? You have no idea how frustrating it is to see someone say they know how to fix something and leave it it at that.

Over the course of a few hours I was able to fix this, so I am going to write this little walkthrough for you using a rom from bwcorvus's page (CLICK HERE) and then used the guide from dirtymindedx -(CLICK HERE)
The reason it took me this long (as well as doing other things) was because I used the wrong set up to unroot my tablet. I was using the Unofficial images that are on bwcorvus's link. Because I didn't read thoroughly enough in his breakdown, I made myself look like a fool...
What you want is NOT

because you will not be able to lock the bootloader (IF you want it to be that way, which I did, and so it gave me a 0x000004 Error, and yes i see that you are having a 0x000002 but somewhere i read this could help that.) I just wanted to get rid of Clockwork Recovery Manager cause it was not working on my 3.2 rooted tablet, and thought that because i messed up teh whole image with playing around and upgrading and seeing how i could break the image without overclocking, i thought i should actually try and make it back to stock too. With this... I needed to do these steps...
1. Upgrade the Motorola drivers while the XOOM was plugged in, so then I would be able to use the Fastboot Correctly.
2. Download the correct roms for my tablet, (Wi-Fi is mine, just grab the one that fits your version and just follow along.)
3. Upgrade my ADB from google because for soem odd reason my fastboot did not like the xoom till i did that...
4. Used the STOCK CABLE. I can Confirm that the STOCK CABLE that allows you to recharge the phones, WILL WORK for this...
5. Once the ADB was set up, I restarted it, aka Hit the red X and then loaded it back up and then closed it again, just to make sure the services were updated somewhat...
6. Opened Command prompt and navigated to the folder that help the zipfile for the fastboot flashing guide (aka dirtymindedx's guide at the top), be using CD (Drive Letter):/location/of/the/folder/that/is/unzipped
7. I then checked over the information in the folder by using dir /a and then proceeded to read through the guide
7-1. A note here... I did the fastboot erase userdata instead, because I wanted to see if it would brick it again... (sorry, I was in a fowl mood with the world last night so I was waiting for it to get bricked so i had a reason to use it as an ice scraper on my car... (not like i would really do it... just wanted a reason for justification haha)
8. ???
9. Profit
This is only to get rid of a "already slightly bricked" device... which I had done after relocking the Rom that was not official to Motorola and now, after a few updates, i now have Android 4.0.3 for the Xoom that was OTA'ed, looking to see how easy it will be to root to reload my rpg game saves that i got caught up in (hence my disappearance from the forums haha...) but I hopefully helped you out in a direction to heads towards... and as long as you don't lock the boot-loader (which someone posted about it before i did...) you should be fine with any changes to the rom after the updates... Also, you can skip steps on this too... you can just flash the image and not the recovery menu and so forth, allowing you to keep other settings that are not part associated to the rom image.
Also sorry for the insanity in my words... I have been up for a good 36 hours with a half hour nap somewhere in there...
I was working fine, enjoying my new HTC One S with CM9 rom installed. Well the battery life wasnt the best on it, and i didnt install the custom kernel. So I looked for the custom kernel download(on my phone, not on my computer) and i found a .zip file. Well I thought that you could just download the kernel straight to my phone and open it up with "Rom Manager" which i did, it than said i needed to reboot the phone in recovery to continue the installation, so I did... it took me to recovery "to continue the installation" well than I looked away, looked backed down and it was black.... and i have tried powering up, booting into boot loader, booting into recover, and nothing... its just BLACK! nothing works, its literally useless ATM. I really messed up, is there anyway to fix this? Thanks in advanced!
----EDIT----
I think I accidentally flashed the kernel like i would normally flash a rom.... cause i downloaded the .zip file(directly to my phone, not using a computer), than i tapped the download and it asked me if i wanted to open it up with rom manager, so i did. and i think rom manager thought i was flashing a rom, when i wasnt, it was a kernel.... am i screwed? or is there anyway out of this?
Do you know the exact kernel you flashed--where did it come from
Some you need to extract and push
Assume you just tried to boot into bootloader thru phone buttons
Does your pc recognize your phone when plugged in, if so can you open a command window and try to access phone as in adb devices then adb reboot bootloader
assuming you are familiar with sdk adb/fastboot comands
otherwise i don't know what else to say--may be bad--sorry
Came from an XDA thread
Here is where it came from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1708676 from "sun90" (half way down the page "CM9 KERNEL remix edition.zip - [Click for QR Code] (5.53 MB, 9 views) ")
i downloaded that straight to my phone and opened it up with Rom Manager, which i think the app took it as a rom, and installed it like a rom even though it was not a rom. I just tried to access it through adb, it comes up with no devices my PC does recognize it when i plug it in though...
Ive tried to get into bootloader tons of times, it just stays black... :'(
Thanks for your answer!
You flashed a galaxy s2 kernel on your one s? why would you ever think that was a smart thing to do?
Looking at the updater script in that zip it seems it wipes some partitions, the partitions on a SGS2 and the ONE S are different, so if that script accidentally wiped say the hboot partition, or some other critical-for-boot partition, you have a fully bricked phone.
For any devs that may know what partitions are what on the One S, the script wiped
mmcblk0p7, and wrote a zimage to mmcblk0p5
---EDIT---
Normally this is a cwm flashable zip on the Samsung Galaxy S II, which is why rom manager flashed it, as it met all the requirements, the only issue is, it was not made for the ONE S and probably overwrote some important things.
I tried for hours and hours to fix the same issue on a friend's One S (same symptoms, not same cause) to no avail. I tried QPST and telnet and a ridiculous amount of things. Had to bring it to the store and get a new one.
Good luck, but I don't believe there's anything you can do to fix it.
Just answered your question in the help thread, Didnt see this thread too !
Im afraid its not looking good, I think your best bet would be to call your provider and blame it on an OTA update.
And hope for the best
Alright, thanks for the help!
Well it looks like i bricked my phone than.... I thought that CM9 was only on the One S, so I just looked for the CM9 kernel, which obviously was for the sg2, i feel like such a dumb ass now! haha well thanks for all the help guys! ill be heading to the t-mobile store today to blame it on a OTA:]
yeah, others wont agree with what your about to do but........
just act like a complete noob, dont mention anything about software / firmware / ROMs / bootloader etc ect
just say your phone made a noise, you selected update and it died lol
good luck--I know it is heartbreaking
not sure of your situation with carrier, but you could go thru Retention if needed
Hi peeps.
i'm very new to all this but sort of know the basics
i'm running on Axiom now but tried to flash cm10 but after install i got a black screen so had to do a restore.
Today i just flashed venom and after the instal process is done, i hear the start up music but nothing on the screen.
I have had 3 other roms on my phone and never had a problem!
these are the steps i do
download rom - place on sd
put phone in recovery
reset factory
reset cache
install from sd
when it finish's reboot
blank screen.
Am i missing something?
Any help would be great and i can't post on the thread because i'm a noob with less than 10 and dont want to spam my way to the 10 :silly:
you are missing a lot, like reading the OP page and following install instructions
you missed separate flash of boot image and wiping system plus data and caches
i wipe system 3x to be safe

I've got a mac
not sure what fastboot is.
I'll check out the link, and thank you very much for trying to help:good:
sorry i do know what fastboot is, yes can get in to it. but ive gone from CWM to teamwin recovery if i go in to the recovery section but that wont let me do anything because the mount. cant even load the phone up
I don't know Mac commands
My idea is to install htc drivers and set up fastboot/adb on pc--the info can be found in dev section on rooting
then open a command window and and boot into fastboot and flash a new recovery, maybe stock per the link, clear storage and try to get mounted
how did you unlock bootloader--
you will need to do alot of reading on adb/fastboot and flashing roms--first step is to have backups of rom and sdcard
since i don't the Mac commands to do fastboot, someone else will chime in at some point
you can alos go to the noob section in Q&A and resubmit your issue
someone will work you thru this, but in meantime study up on android sdk/fastboot/adb. a necessity to get out of these problems
you are not bricked, just need the info and right steps to get back on track

I am really sorry but i don't understand how to do any of these guides i can't download adb in the first guide because of a DNS failure. I've tried all of them and i just get so lost trying to figure out what i'm doing. I don't know if there's a way you could help me anymore but if you can't then it's okay.
I had this same problem. Am also illiterate when it comes to programming. I tried a factory reset and now it only comes up in CMR. I assumed it had uninstalled the factory and CMR interrupted it when it went to reinstall because it overrides the stock recovery mode. So I thought I was looking at a case of having no operating system on there at all and installing a ROM would help. I put the sdcard in a different phone so I could put the new ROM on there. Still doesn't work. The problem is that it appears all the ROMs need the original ROM on there to install over top of. Even after it says they are installed, it still only boots up in CMR.
Had I known rooting the phone would put CMR on there, I wouldn't have done it. I only rooted so I could do the android tether. Anybody been able to figure out his problem yet?

Looking for one as well. I have not found one.
Recovery is actually preinstalled
I found this just tooling around. Use your favorite file browser, I used
Total commander. /system/vender/itson
The zip file is there. Hope this helps. (Rooted LG ls620)
Could you explain in a little better detail on what you mean Enigmatic177... I'm pulling my hair out Hehe
If anyone makes or finds a working recovery please post it.
Itson is a zip file that was installed after last update it has the basics to unlock the boot loader. I unpacked it used Rom toolbox pro rebooted to RECOVERY did regular reboot system upgraded.
A couple if bit mapp errors 11111. Then I basically flashed CWM.
Before you do this the partitions change from ext2-ext4. I'd advise
Backing them up.

hello I followed the steps in the read me file and i succeeded in installing twrp although im having troubles booting up to my system os. when i power on my device it takes me straight to twrp. i have a feeling i might of missed a step. i tried creating a backup but i cant because i noticed my screen turns off fast. do you think you might know what might be the problem why i cant boot up to my os? thanks!
I think i know what seems to be the problem. I think i might have accidentally replaced the boot img with the twrp recovery img. i did not make a backup before this happened. is there anything i can do to make my phone boot up to its normal image? thanks
Nope. It is officially a paperweight and no one I know of has access to the stock ROM either.

Hey
Has anybody found a custom rom?
Finally. Easy as pie
Ok, I downloaded an image (w5c_twrp_bumped.img)
put that img on the root of my sd card
downloaded Rashr from the google play store
opened rashr and tapped 'recovery from storage', navigated to external sd and tapped the image and tapped
ýes please'
flashed it. after the flash the phone rebooted into the twrp recovery.
then just rebooted back into the system
worked perfectly.
im new here im not allowed to post outside links yet, just google "w5c_twrp_bumped.img" should take you to a link for a download of that recovery
i got twrp now as a custom recovery. on my lg realm.

OK, I grabbed and extracted this. I used Flashify to simply flash the recovery (w5c_twrp_bumped.img) and it works like a dream on my LG Realm.
OTOH, trying the same on an Exceed 2 gets me TWRP, but it cannot mount much of anything and the backup fails. After failing, it tells me "No OS found, continue?" I continue and get the message "Appears your device has no Root, install now?' I am absolutely certain I have root, or wouldn't even be able to run Flashify, so I continue and it simply boots into the OS just fine. Perhaps the readme isn't complete, as I see the following file in the extracted folder (resources.zip) with no explanation of why it's there. It "appears" to be a flash-able zip that installs "itson" (whatever THAT is). Note that the Realm has this in the /system/vendor/itson, yet the Exceed 2 doesn't.
Have you actually used this on an Exceed 2? And if so, what am I missing here?

I'll do you one better. Just forget about the post you replied to, as it's convoluted as hell. Install TWRP 2.8.6 from here. Ignore the big red warning about the Realm, as he evidently hasn't updated the OP. You can view my notes regarding the Realm in this reply. Tested several times and verified working better than anything else available. Easiest recovery to install I've ever dealt with (all done with an .apk). The option to access via cold boot (battery pull procedure) is something to behold
Be sure to thank the developer, even if you need to create an account to do so. Very VERY nice work!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before you replied I installed the version 2.8.5 from here:
http://androidforums.com/threads/twrp-2-8-5-0-for-realm-ls620-and-exceed-2-vs450pp.908704/
Is 2.8.6 better? Looks like the 2.8.5 can't be booted into via key combo from power off? Are there any other differences? I just used the Rashr flash tool from the market to flash 2.8.5. Worked flawlessly. This is actually my mom's phone and it wanted to do a system upgrade but I wanted to back it up first so that's the reason I wanted a recovery.
Pretty cool though, this recovery installs just via an APK!!!? That's amazing!
I'm tempted to install this on her phone next time she comes over... it should be fine right?
Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!

That one will cold boot with the battery pull procedure too. A little further down that thread you'll see I modded it to work correctly with the Exceed 2 in addition to the Realm. I like the 2.8.6 better if only that the dates of the backup are correct now. The 286.apk will work fine and overwrite your current recovery. If you leave it installed, you can always open it and reboot to recovery from within the app. If I have more time I'll post a screenshot, but running late for work. I think the screen dimming/timeout issue was fixed as well, but I haven't verified that. I normally disable that in TWRP anyway, as I like to monitor what it's doing during a backup/restore in case of errors.

THANKS!!!! I'll make it a point to flash that to my mom's phone next time I get the chance!
Hello, my name is Shagington
I have been slowly unlocking the potential of my tf700t, yet I have come to a point where I am stuck loading the android OS. The problem started when I installed xposed to gain the ability to modify the permission of apps. Now it just sits with the loading circle spinning around and 'round. I tried wiping from the bootloader yet the same thing happens. While looking into the bootloader more, I found twrp installed after what I thought were many failed attempts. I tried a wipe from that as well and the same thing happens. I was thinking about just flashing a stock (rooted) rom with twrp but I am afraid of getting into a worse spot than I already am in, any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Shag
You need to post your bootloader version (read the tiny script when you boot with Power and Volume Down) and your recovery version.
That will determine what you can flash or what type of repair you can try.
Do you have fastboot and adb setup on your PC?
Check if you have a fastboot connection when booted into the bootloader and adb when booted into recovery.
See if you can capture a logcat of the boot process in adb.
Then report back.
Whatever you do, do not use the Wipe Data option from the bootloader!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for the quick reply berndblb, it seems im on build us 10.6.1.14.8-20130514. I just reformatted my pc to windows 10 tech preview so im not quite sure how that will work with adb but I will give it a go tomorrow. Will any custom rom work with the current build i have?
Thanks again, Shagington (Newbington)

Yes, there are. You are one version behind to the latest (and last) bootloader 10.6.1.14.10. Might be a good idea to update to the latest while you're at it...
Which recovery and version thereof did you flash?
Once we are sure that you have compatible software installed you can flash a bootloader/TWRP package to get you up to date, but let's resolve your current pickle first.

Thanks again for responding good sir, I am on twrp 2.8.5.0, which still loads just fine.

When you install xposed it puts an emergency uninstall zip on the internal sdcard partition. Try flashing that from twrp to reverse it out.
Be careful with xposed it can sofbrick easily as you have found out.

I tried the first Win10 preview, and I just had to connect the tablet and run adb.exe - it worked fine with the automatically installed drivers.
Thanks for the replies guys, I couldnt find any zips on my internal, I looked through almost every folder. After looking through the adb tutorials, it is a little to intimidating for me. Kinda sad, I was under the impression that now I have twrp I could just throw some other rom on quickly or even a download a backup from someone else with the same versions to recover and be done with it. I think im just going to leave it soft bricked for a while and use my nexus 7 for now. Appreciate the help guys, it's just a little over my head.
