[Resolved] [Q] Which of these Android phones should I buy? - General Questions and Answers

Hello everyone,
after spending a few years as an iPhone user, I've now decided to switch to android.
Actually I've been pretty interested in this os since the release of the first nexus and I must now decide which phone I should take.
Because I'm italian, I've found a pretty good offer from my career, TIM, and I can choose to take one of this phones for a very low price:
Original Samsung Galaxy S
HTC Desire S
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc
Sony Ericsson Xperia Play
LG Optimus 3d
Google Nexus S
As far as my personal taste is concerned, I'd choose one among the Nexus S, the Optimus 3d or the Desire s.
I know the newest one in terms of hardware is, indeed, the Optimus 3d, which is actually the one I'd go for because of all that dual stuff (I'm not that much interested in the 3d, though it's something more to have). My fear is that it's support will soon be discontinued (maybe because of the 3d) and I'll find my self with a super phone stuck with an old software.
Actually I've also seen Cyanogen is soon going to officially support it, and that'll be a good way to be constantly up to date.
My second choice would be the Desire S, because I've seen there are plenty of roms keeping it up to date, including an unofficial cyanogenmod and one upgrading it to sense 3.0 (actually, what do you think of sense? Is it worth it?)
And my third and last choice would be the Nexus S, which is, indeed, the most customizable one.
So, which one would you go for?
Hope to hear from you soon,
Lorenzo
Edit: today (sept 16th) I bought the Nexus s. Thanks to everyone.

nexus s, I gave up my evo for it. Let me tell you best switch ever 10x smoother, faster browser, no bloatware. Get updates 10x quicker. More development. Just amazing phone all around.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play if gaming is your first priority
Google Nexus S if development is your first priority

Google Nexus S should be the best choice here.

To be honest, I'm nothing like a phone gamer. Actually, I'm neither a developer, but I like spending some time playing with roms and that kind of stuff.
So, for the moment I think you all agree saying the Nexus S is the best option.
Anyone else?

Sorry for the double post, but I actually bought the Nexus S. Thanks to everyone who helped me.

[Q] Help me choose a phone.

Hi guys, can you help?
I need to upgrade my phone, presently a rather slow and left behind Vodafone Magic. Running 2.2.1, just shows up how slow the phone is now. Too much lag.
I'm not adverse to rooting phones etc, but generally can't be bothered. So I want to go along to Vodafone and upgrade to best phone I can without taking out £35/month contracts (at present paying 20-25)
Android seems to be a decent choice, as it's continuing to develop, and I do like having my Google contacts/calendar/email easily linked.
The choices look to be:-
i-phone 3gs (possibly, although this may be at high end of costs)
HTC Desire
HTC Legend
Sony Erricson X10
Google (HTC) Nexus One
I am angling towards the Nexus one, but just wondered if other people could let me know if it really is a good phone, and that it doesn't lag as badly as my present one. I am also guessing as it is already running 2.2, then it will shortly be upgraded to 2.3 once Google start putting it out to older phones.
Would this be a good choice?
Cheers, Steve
I have HTC Desire one year ago and this is the best phone until my next phone HTC Desire HD
It's hard to chose of this phones
I would go with the Legend or the Nexus One.

[Q] HD2 Replacement....which phone to pick?

Hey everyone, I had an HD2, loved that it was hacked to the max with a million roms available, and that it was always updated to the newest android almost immedietly, unfortunately the wifi chip died 2 months later and i had to sell it.
Now im looking for a used phone on ebay basically, budget is max 250-300, the samsung vibrant looked good, but im affraid if i buy it ill be stuck on froyo or gingerbread, and not be able to update to android ice cream end of the year (while im sure the HD2 would be hacked to ice cream immedietly lol)
Seeing as the HD2 left a bad taste in my mouth so to speak, which phone would you recomend that has good dev support and most likely to be able to upgrade down the line? thanks
I have the HTC HD7 and I think you'll like it, the OS is AMAZING!!! And I saw it for 280* around Amazon.com
If you want android, but stick to the hTC family, they you should think about the hTC Desire HD. But if it's too expensive, the X10 from Sony will be also a good choice, and I saw it around 270* on Amazon. But the downside of Android is, that it is not sure when you get updates while WP7 (HTC HD7...) is.
Maybe, you should think about the iPhone, that thing has updates. And WP7 is also easy to update.
Since I don't know where you live and if you are a professional hacker or a noob, I just gave you recommendations that should fir almost anybody.
* New, unused price in EUR. Price may change depending on when you buy.

Of course,
EDIT As the guy abov333 said, The x10 is great too! But its best if you flash the miui rom that just came out for it
it adds multitouch and such stuff.
AND Miui On the desire has OTA updates!! :3
The HD2 is an amazing device,
so many hacks available for it c:
i had one But traded it since the size was a little to big for what i like,
I would for sure check if you can get an new HD2 (i mean used x3)
Or maybe the desire HD
Just as the Desire! I have one its an good size and there are tons of roms
just as CM7 and miui
even a sense 3.0 rom is out!
I would look for those since they will help you to continue with hacking in the future
Moon c:
THanks
thanks guys will check them out
I've had a HD2 for over a year and a half now, and have been using Android on it for nearly half that time. I've also played with WP7 on it, and was utterly disappointed. I loved WM6.5 so I expected a LOT from WP7, but it simply didn't deliver.
The Desire HD is the closest thing to a HD2 out there, but is obviously a native Android device. Android does get updated regularly (especially if you're a regular on this site), as I'm sure you know. Seriously, no disrespect to Tuskuno's opinion - I just disagree with it.
I'm just about to get a Samsung Galaxy S II on contract, but if I were going for an off-the-shelf stock phone, it would probably be the Desire HD.
You can't go wrong with getting a Nexus. A Nexus One is like $260 on ebay and has a great development community along with frequent updates because it's a google experience.
Nexus
That was my first choice, then I read about how its not truely multitouch and is problamatic in multitouch games, so i decided against it.
the desire Z (tmobile g2) looks like a viable option, priced around 200 on ebay
If you want to have the latest version of android in your phone, i suggest you pick one supported by Cyanogen. I dont have enought posts yet to include links, but there's a relevant list over at "cyanogenmod dot com slash devices".
its simple just go for the EU version of the Samsung Galaxy S.
sounds good
would love to but its too out of my budget, cant spend a dime over 300
Dude believe me and just stick with the hd2 a lot of development space towork with plus u get the best of three words wp7, wm, Android. The hd7 is virtually the same thing as the hd2 with there old school screens but the hd7 lacks development at the moment.

Have to second that.
Until something as good as the HD2 comes along, I can't think what I'll go for next.

[Q] Android Phone for Development

Hi Guys,
I've been working on android app development and I'm at the stage of implementing designs. I'm looking for a phone primarily for developing apps, portable media centre (videos: xvid, mp4; music) and tinkering around with ROMs.
I have a work Samsung Galaxy S GTI900, but due it belonging to my work I'm very limited in what I can and can't do with it. It has problems with GPS accuracy and Kies PC software issues, leaving me to want to try something different from Samsung. HTC users seem to be very happy with their products, but there seems to be a lack of available ROMS such as CyanogenMod
Phone should be hardware reliable, software updated regularly and something that will last for a few years for development.
The phones available to me:
HTC:
Wildfire
Wildfire S
Desire
Desire S
Desire Z
Legend
Samsung:
Galaxy Ace
Galaxy Apollo
Galaxy Mini
Sony Ericsson:
Xperia X10
Xperia X10 mini
Xperia X10 mini pro
Or should I keep saving until I can afford more expensive models such as HTC Sensation, Incredible S and Desire HD?
Any input would be appreciated.
Skip those samsung models you listed, they won't make you happy.
The HTC Desire is decent with a huge community but already a bit old.
If you don't want to get another galaxy s you can play around with i would recommend saving for a galaxy 2.
btw: im happily developing on my galaxy s running cm7 atm... soo smooth... no your not allowed to do that on your work device,
For development purposes, your best bet is the Desire. As stated previously it has a massive developer base and plenty of support, plus most of its quirks are well-known. Even better, see if you can find a Google Nexus One
Get a Desire...I know it is old and has many limitation but if you got stuck during development, many experienced devs can help you out.
Desire has the most powerful community and devs, so, you might wanna check Desire out.

Yeah you're right.
I work for an engineering firm, if they were less technical I would risk using that for general use.
Thanks for the input. Seems the Desire is the most popular choice from reading other threads around here.
It would let me get started on implementation quickly, but some of the quirks could be a problem i.e. battery life, is there a list of all the quirks?
From reading; the Desire S seems to have most of the quirks sorted, but it doesnt have the same level of modding possible.
How is the HTC PC connection software? Does it perform media conversion for devices such as Samsungs Kies?
If I was to buy a Desire then i could purchase a Samsung Galaxy S GT I9000, Xperia ARC, or even save for a few extra months to purchase a Samsung Galaxy S2, which would be bit excessive...
Right now I'm leaning towards purchasing a HTC Desire, will need to do some more reading of what can and can't be done on it, but I'm now also considering a Samsung Galaxy S...
Cheers guys.
The biggest problem of the HTC Desire is the small internal memory.
The users crying for App2SD are usually the HTC Desire owners .
Yup!
The only problem but also the real major problem of the Desire is the internal memory.
It is simply sh*t small.
That is why we have A2SD, A2SD+, Data++, Data2EXT, etc.

I have a Desire HD and it is a great phone with a crazy amount of support. The sensation isn't rooted yet so skip that until it is. On a side note I love HTC products Ive never had any problems with them. I've had HTC since the Hero. Great phones.
For development i would just look at the NexUS phones. Best bang for buck IMO!
Thanks for the help guys.
Ive settled on getting a HTC Desire for development purposes.
Only questions I have is about battery life with media on custom ROMs, which Ive enquired about in the Desire forum.
Cheers.

Need help selecting QWERTY phone?

Hello everyone!
So I've been a Nokia fan since forever and right now my main phone is a Nokia E71 which has served me well! However I got the upgrade bug and have wanted to upgrade it with a newer one. Thing is, I like QWERTY phones. In fact, I hoped that Nokia would offer an awesome Nokia Mango QWERTY phone... too bad none were presented (at least not yet.)
Anyway, while reading/searching I have a partial list that I would like your input on. They are:
1) htc desire z
2) Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro
3) LG Optimus Quantum C900
4) Dell Venue Pro
5) Samsung Sidekick 4G
As you can see, I don't mind if it's Android or Windows. I have a few nitpicks though. For example, 1) is the most expensive, 2) seems to have an "electrostatic" problem that ruins sound reproduction and videos! , 3) 4) not sure which of the 2 might be better but the Dell looks better ... and for the Sidekick, not sure if performance is on par with 1) and 2)...
So any help you can provide to his newb is welcomed!!
Thanks.!
If you want something powerful, there's Motorola Milestone 3 or Xperia Pro (without Mini).I personally preffer Xperia Pro, not so powerful, but sexy phone.
Thanks for the recommendation.
I guess budget is also an issue... (which is why I didn't list more expensive phones..).
I just don't want to spend too much since I pretty much know that I'll go crawling back to Nokia in a few months! ;-)
I'll take a look at the Xperia Pro though... Sony phones are sexy!! lol
Moved
Ooopsss.. Thanks!
So... yeah... the Xperia Pro (not mini) is kind of expensive as well
Probably will buy unlocked btw (not with any contract!) I guess I should have stated that earlier?
I would love the easiest to write too... I'm thinking of getting the Sidekick even though the camera
is not the best... But again, I'll listen to what you guys have to say!
Thanks!
So... decided on getting both the Sidekick 4G and the LG Optimus Quantum... let's see which one I enjoy the most...
Thanks.

recommendation of HTC one XL

Hi guys,
I am in Aus and have had a Sony xperia phone since day1 going through their range. I am thinking of changing to a HTC one XL.
Is this a wise choice? Any major issues etc? What is dev support like. The sony has great in everything and I currently run CM9 on my sony arc s.
I wasnt impressed with their last release the S and feels backwards. However, the arc s camera is the best in market.. What is support like for the HTC?
Are you happy with your purchases etc? It will be a locked phone from Telstra (in aus). Is it bloated and can you remove the crap? How mature is the root process and how *crap* is sense compared to stock launchers.. really comparing to cm9 and 7.2 here.
Is it easy to remove the telstra crap or does it break the 4g capability.
And lucky last..
is 4g worth it, or is simply the htc one X a better phone with quad cores and more support as it does not have sole distribution in countries?
Bugger, dont need an answer to this thread..
Tried to delete but cant find an actual delete thread, can find the edit.. sorry. However, this thread is a dupe and useless.
