Adreo 220 vs Mali-400..which one is faster and more powerful ?? - HTC Sensation

guys..which one is faster and more powerful..Mali-400 or Adreno220 ??
my sensation running Android Revolution HD.. CPU overclocked to 1.5GHz and GPU overclocked..
i can't get scores like GS2 (stockROM) or better than him !!

If I'm not mistaken, the Areno 220 can push 1080p stereoscopic 3D.
The question is whether the manufacturers wrote drivers to help with the hardware acceleration, which is what Samsung did with the Exynos-Mali400. =)

So Mali-400 better than Adreno 220 ??
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk

This site is also very informative http://www.droidgamers.com/index.ph...1661-dual-core-beasts-the-decision-to-buy-one

Mali-400 MP4 is better.

i have htc Sensation and i think Mali-400 is more powerful and faster
i installed Fruit Ninja HD Crazy (modded version to get alot from fruit in arcade mod) so in htc Sensation even with overclock i get lag..in SGS2 without custom rom it's so smooth
in quadrant i use advanced edition in 2D always i get like 330 and 3D i get from 600 to 1000 with overclock..in SGS2 without anything in 2D get 800 and 3D 1200 !!!

[Q] Gaming Capabilities?

Hello
Will the sensation be better for playing games than the SGS 2, which needs games to be updated before they can play on the mali400? I hoping apps and games don't have to be recoded/reprogrammed to work on the adreno 220, if they work/play fine on the adreno 205?
Thanks
Ian
Not 100% sure but I think the problem with the SGS2 is that the Mali400 GPU doesn't support any form of texture compression. So any games that use texture compression needs to be recompiled and have the textures modified.
The Sensation should not have the same problem since the adreno 220 is just the next gen of the 205 and should be backward compatible.
benchmark
Any new benchmarks comparing ADRENO 220 with MAli 400
i've seen a benchmark for an overclocked CPU with ADRENO 220 (clocked at 1.5 GHz). This does not give a good comparison as the real life sensation will be clocked at 1.2 GHz
Also any new overall benchmarks for the sensation, the old ones scored horrible 1200 pts. People are saying this is because the preliminary firmware is using only one core, but they did not post any reference proving their claim

What you're saying is not entirely true.
The 1.5 GHz is the chip's default speed (check Qualcomm's website) - the benchmark was of the Qualcomm development unit (MDP). The Sensation uses an underclock probably to reserve battery life.
Keep in mind, and I'm basing it entirely on tidbits I hear here and there on this forum and on tech blogs, that Qualcomm CPUs tend to get higher overclock speeds than the competition (or at least those who do it make more noise ).
As for the early benchmark - I was able to play with a similar device in question, software version 0.50.something, and yes - it was horrid. I ran Neocore just for laughs and it got 5 FPS. Later on I had a few minutes with one running 1.05 (not the final 1.20 that was leaked) and Neocore got 59.9. Wish I could upload a screenshot, but if I did I'd probably get fired (it has the confidential watermark with the serial number on it, which could than trace it directly to me).
Do take the above with a grain of salt - this is the internet and at the moment I have no way to give solid proof that what I said is true - you can just take my word for it (which if you're smart - you won't).
I will say this though - I have already pre-ordered one.
I think the Qualcomm cpus are the most efficent by far. My dhd runs undervolted all the way up to 1.2ghz and overvolts upto 1.6ghz, we have a stable 2ghz kernel atm too, my phone has never felt warm or hot. So it wouldn't surprise me if it was natural running at 1.5ghz.

No it will not heavy emulator rely more on the CPU than the gpu. Look at computer you can have a crappy gpu and an I7 processor would play an xbox Wii emulator just fine. Mytouch 4g plays n64 emulator just fine.

[INFO] Sensation NEW Benchmark Scores

Hey I thought it would be cool to just have a seperate thread for this so people can stop asking so much al throughout the other threads.
I've seen 2342 so far on the released version compared to the model in prerelease which was 1300 score. Thats a very fast speed.
Post yall quadrant scores here.
Remember also that all who view this the sensation has a qhd screen.
Makes a difference.

And as I've been reading on other topics there might be a incompatibility problem due to two cores. It's new chipset and has different architecture etc. Lets give it some time.

People have been saying that the sensation is getting low scores because benchmark programs are not designed to test both cores.
I find that most people are throwing around nothing but assumptions for reasons i really cannot understand. Do you know for a fact whether those benchmark programs are optimized only for one core, or is your enthusiasm for the sensation subconsciously pushing you to say that ?????????????
The author of smartbench has posted a comment on another thread in this forum that one of the main reasons smartbench 2010 was pulled out and smartbench 2011 released was testing dual core phones. he added that he does not know why is the sensation getting such low scores as compared to other dual core phone, but will investigate and come back.
So irrespective of my personal preference to HTC phones, and if smartbench author cannot find a bug in his smartbench 2011 leading to low scores on sensation, i have to say that the sensation CPU does not seem to be at the same performance level as other dual core phones

Sam, I saw your youtube video of browser performance for Sensation. That flash pinch-zoom thing was horrible. Was this consistent across all websites?

I just digged more into the CPU in QSD8x60 It seems to be the same scorpion cpu that ships in the MT4G. According to my data the exynos CPU is 16% faster than the qsd8x60 at the same clock speed ( 2.5 DMIPS vs 2.1 DMIPS ) being architecturally different as exynos is cortex a9 and the other one is Custom Cortex A8 so the lower score. The Sensation Smartbench productivity score is exactly 2.4x that of a stock mt4g. Other things that are affecting smartbench is the Memory Score, I/O of Sensation is around 0.5x that of GS2 and 2d score is around 0.25 x (lower due to more resolution) of that of GS2 maybe due to the fact GSII has hardware acceleration. In real day use Memory, I/O arent going to be affecting stuff much. The CPU on Exynos is faster, GSII has hardware acceleration and I/O and Memory score on the GSII are much higher. When it comes to graphics at the same resolution they are both on the same speed when on the same resolution but difference comes due to sensations qHD display. So for the performance in day to day life the Sensation isn't gonna be much of a difference over Desire HD or the GSII when executing single threaded apps which are 99% apps on Android market and like with most >1ghz CPU you wont experience lag and for the graphics they are gonna be much much faster and better. The Linpack score which tells you the speed of execution of apps written in Java which most Android apps are it is going to be same as GSII, No difference. When executing Native Apps GSII will be faster but when it comes to Native Apps, Most of the Native Apps are games which depend more on the gpu so here too both are same. When it comes to Multimedia Sensation is faster than GSII as it has a 128bit pipeline but both are capable of decoding/encoding 1080p at 30fps and no one is gonna go beyond that. It will only be different when using anything that is on Neon.
To sum it up
Both Phones are extremely powerful and perform better than each other in different scenarios. They are at a point where the difference are minor when coming to performance. To buy a device it entirely depends on your choice as IMO they are both no.1 at the android device table right now. You wont be disappointed by any of those
Do you have the device yet?

About G2X Tegra2 is plain sucky when it comes to dual core and it is slowest of the bunch. The Java Apps dont perform well and that is what android is based on. Native Apps are mostly games and tegra 2 is good but Sensation is better on both

They doesn't quite make sense as the mytouch is a stock 1.4 chip MSM8255 the g2 and mytouch are basically the same processors underclocked to 1ghz. The sensation is a stock 1.5 dual core capable of 2.6 ghz overclock The score the sensation getting is the same the score my mytouch was getting out of the box. That indicates that the other processor isn't quite doing anything. At its not the same as a mytouch. The chip in the sensation is MSM8660 Dual-Core SoC with Adreno 220 GPU. Equivalent to the one with HTC evo 3d. QSD8x60 dual core hasn't even been introduced yet.

Nope I understand I said this early about lower benchmarks. I don't care about them and I do understand the qsd chip isn't similar to the msm Chipset. Similar processors would be g2 and the mytouch 4g as they have the exact same architecture. The mytouch architecture though similar being a a8 should be vastly different

I said "there might be". That doesn't mean there is. Most of us don't have this phone so we're making guesses of course.
Early anandtech benchmarks say (don't want links again just search yourself) this chipset at default 1.5 ghz is better than other dual cores. 0.3 Ghz downclock doesn't effect that much. So we're suspicious that there might be incompability problem. Because chipset is new, phone is new etc. And that author doesn't have Sensation too. Then I said "lets wait". Is that ok for you?

Is the Adreno 225 GPU up to the task?

Since we dont have the Tegra 3 Geoforce GPU for the fancy gaming, how is the new Adreno 225 handling high end games? Im interested to see if it plays Modern Combat 3 smoothly since my las phone (HTC Vivid 4.0 ICS) choked making it lag. If anyone has high end / graphically intensive games, please post the name and if it plays smoothly, decent, or lags, so the rest of us has an idea of what to expect. Thanks

Only benches slightly lower then the tegra3, but with the extra power from the cpu I would say it balances out.

The 225 and the 220 are basically the exact same, with DirectX support added to the 225. What makes the 225 in the S4 more powerful than the 220 used in many devices such as the evo 3d and the hp touchpad is the higher clock. Thanks to the 28nm process, the adreno can be clocked at 400mhz rather than 266. Nearly double.

I think THD games are blocked in the market from installing on non Tegra devices.
I have played a few high end games and I have had no issues. I had a lot problems with Grand Theft Auto in the past. Some devices I had in the past played it but the game would be slower than it should be. With the LTE One X it played GTA on the highest settings without any issue. I played Ride Racer I think its called with the Jet skies and that played and looked great. Although my Galaxy Nexus played that game great too. I played Shadow Warrior with no problem either.
I'm not sure if I'm going to keep my One X though. It works great but I hate how locked down it is. I was spoiled by my Galaxy Nexus.

Clocks are only 50% up but memory bandwidth which holding the 220 back is doubled. Meaning in practice the 225 is usually 60% - almost double of the 220 performance. Even my adreno 205 handles all games play with ease. 225 is frankly overkill for existing games at the moment. However the tegra3 and samsungs mali400 are far ahead when comes to decoding flash videos on youtube desktop page. They play 1080p flawlessly while the adreno 225 chokes on 480p.

However the tegra3 and samsungs mali400 are far ahead when comes to decoding flash videos on youtube desktop page. They play 1080p flawlessly while the adreno 225 chokes on 480p.

its not that the 225 cant handle 1080p it sure can its just its just not being utilized properly due to crappy drivers/lack of proper hardware acceleration

It can be due to the reasons you mentioned but it does not really matter. What we want is the end result and its not delivering in terms of flash performance.

Whaat?? not even 720p videos that my 3 year old Symbian can play - if true then brutal!! it cant be hardware. must be drivers but why didn't anyone complain on this issue yet so that qualcomm hurries on fixing it
@Metalhead can u use Chainfire 3D and report on how well it runs on adreno

Adreno 225 at 720p and mali400?

Hey guys was hoping you could help me out since I am a big newbie when it comes to the mobile world
I am looking to buy a new phone, and one of the phones I've choosen to buy has adreno 225, 1.5ghz krait and 720p 4.7" screen (its the pantech (or SKY) a830l ).
Was hoping you guys could help me and let me know which games and/or apps (if any) I wont be able to run because of gpu bottle-neck on this resolution, and how future proof the adreno 225 will prove to be..
additionally, my alternative choice is htc One X
One X is almost twice the price of the pantechm , so I want to know whether its really worth it in terms of cpu and gpu power (ignoring the better screen for a bit).
Also, I've noticed that many 'very' powerful cell phones have mali400 (including galaxy note (1) and SIII). I've heard people say that adreno 225 is better than mali400 AND that SIII outperforms in games cell phones with much more powerful graphics card. So now im really confused. Am I missing something?

mali 400 easily outperforms adreno 225... that's why it is in galaxy s3
and it has capability upto 4 cores so it is better
more comparable to it would be adreno 320!
the "pantech" one is a good choice if pricing suits you! You'll be able to play many games but i assume 1.5 ghz krait is either dual/quad core!! If yes you are good to go!

thanks for the reply, really appreciate the clarification.
Ive seen a couple of benchmarks but benchmarks are just benchmarks. Based on current games an apps, how many games and apps are there that wont be able to run because of the gpu? and can you give me some examples? hope I'm not asking too much
the pantech 830 is Super IPS LCD 720p (4.8"), krait dual core 1.5ghz and adreno 225
Samsung galaxy Note (N7000) is Super Amoled 720p (5.3"), cortex A-9, mali400, about 25% more expensive than the pantech
HTC One X is about twice the price of the pantech (and I really doubt I need the quad core)

Well the pantech phone will run almost all games.. Games which have state of the art graphics like nova3,wild blood and latest nfs, asphalt releases might be a problem.. But those can also be made working by rooting and enabling hardware acceleration
Note and one x will run all games but i understand they are costly
Then again it comes to u, how much u want to pay!

thanks for the reply..Im willing to spend more but I just dont want spend money on hardware which I wont be utilizing. Id like to game on my mobile, but not dying do and dont mind if a few games dont work. Prefer gaming on my PC in any case.
Just want to confirm that all apps would work and I could run 720p videos on the pantech smoothly.

Overlocking GPU??

recently i came across overlocking GPU.. in sense4a built by derefas made GPU overlocked to 220 n he mensioned that its safe.. is i dont think it wont create any problem.. some problem ll exist.. can anybody know that problem?? and overlocking to 220 means now we have adreno220 ?? is it like dat?? n i google it but i saw that for adreno220 it clock speed would be 1.2Ghz to 1.5GHz(acc. to this site - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imageon). so that rom has gpu overlocked n cpu optional, it means iguess it make some problem.. can anybody explain me pros n cons..:fingers-crossed:

The dev's have had their phone's NAND memory fried due to overclocking the Processor. I don't have info about the GPU.

No, it ain't like that. The chip is embedded, and can't change.
Our Chipset is MSM7225A (according to http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=3073&c=htc_explorer_htc_pico) and the GPU supported is Adreno 200 (enhanced) according to (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapdragon_(system_on_chip)).
The Adreno 200 was said to support the following in the wikipedia site.
Adreno 200 (AMD Z430) inside the QSD8x50 (1 GHz) and MSM7x27 (600 MHz A11+L2 cache). It offers a programmable function pipeline and streaming textures with support for OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenGL ES 1.1, OpenVG 1.1, EGL 1.4, Direct3D Mobile, SVGT 1.2 and DirectDraw. (22M triangles/second, 133M pixels/second, clock speed up to 128 MHz).

Even some googling didn't help in finding the clocking speed of our GPU. According to wikipedia, it supports 128 MHz.
Note that it was for the devices QSD8x50 (1 GHz) and MSM7x27.
But, an enhanced GPU is supported in our Chip. So, I got the following info from the Qualcomm website.
Adrenoâ„¢ 200 is the first OGLES 2.0 GPU with unified shader architecture and makes maximum use of the graphics processing power of the GPU. This GPU is a leap forward in visual graphics quality from OpenGL-Es 1.x, which enables developers to implement effects that were previously a daunting task. APIs supported include OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenGL ES 1.1, OpenVG 1.1, EGL 1.3, Direct3D Mobile, SVGT 1.2 and DirectDraw. The Adreno 200 delivers streaming textures to combine Video, Camera, SVG and other image surfaces with 3D graphics. It also enables concurrent CPU, DSP, Graphics, and MDP and includes a programmable function graphics pipeline.

And, so, I summarized that an enhanced GPU, in our chip, has a normal clocking speed of around 200 MHz, and it can be overclocked. How this is done, and all the other stuff, the developers might help you. And, if its safe... I also read that overclocking a little wouldn't harm. So, I guess it's safe.
Anyways, the Pros are that you would get a little extra fps, so you could "expect" a little improvement in gaming and video playback.
The Cons... Well, anyone using an overclocked GPU for long might know.

yea.. actually.. i dint understand what is mean by GPU OC.. how it ll improves the gaming performance??
Maybe if its highly OC'd, then...

When overclocked the textures are rendered little quicker than normal clocking. It won't double the frame rate as some guy doubted. Look at the details of our CPU and gpu.
