[Q] I seriously screwed up, mainly because I don't know what I'm doing HELP!!!! - General Questions and Answers

Ok Ill try to make this as clear as I can. I don't know what I'm doing and thought I would mess around with my Samsung Mesmerize for USCC.
USCC released the gingerbread update for my phone. So I went on their site and downloaded the installer and installed it on my phone. Before I was on froyo and was rooted with the vodoo lagfix. I did NOT disable or unroot before I did it.
Gingerbread update went fine and phone was working properly. I wanted to use my titanium backup to restore all of my apps but it said I wasnt rooted. I figured all I had to do was use superonelickroot and be back to square one. Problem is it wouldnt work.
This is where I really screwed up. I browsed around and found that I need to root it different because gingerbread is different and wont work with superoneclickroot.
I found a link to upgrade the samsung galaxy 19000 by using odin and replace some files.
This is where I really screwed up. I flashed my rom and installed the .tar file not realizing that it wasnt for my phone........
SIGH>..........
Phone wouldnt go past samsung screen which was all discolored and weird.
After panicing for awhile I figured I need to use odin again and flash an original rom back. So I found an original USCC froyo 2.2 rom and reflashed it to my phone.
Now my phone at least loads but I'm having a slew of problems. My internal memory storage is at 0 so I cant install anything. I also keep getting force close loop from twlauncher. I got that to go away by removing all of the widgets on my phone.
I have NO clue what the hell I'm doing and I'm afraid I screw this phone up.
I've tried hard resetting and when I do it, it says all sorts of failures and crap in red in the boot screen. It will reload eventually and the phone otherwise seems to be fine.
The problem is I can install like 2 apps and that's it before it says there in insufficient memory.
All I want to do is get my phone working like normal again.
What did I do wrong, other then the obvious installing the wrong rom for my phone?
I thought by reflashing with an original rom things would be back to normal, apparently not.
I would appreciate any help or info.
I'm not a complete noob but will need some laymen terms.
Thanks !

Maybe you repartitioned your phone when flashing the i9000 ROM (.PIT file?).
So now the partitions are wrong/too small as you don't have an i9000, which means you will have to repartition it to fit your device.
I don't have any knowledge about your device, so this is just an educated guess.

anyone have any suggestions on what I might have done wrong?
I would really like to be able to install apps back on my phone again
I have no idea why my phone is saying there is no system memory
Any ideas?

Update:
I restarted my phone just to see what happens and it reloaded like normal except it didn't save alot of my setting I changed.
So the phone is truly acting like it has no system memory. My wallpaper was back to the original one that comes with the phone and other settings were turned back to the original settings.
What will happen if I "clear cache partition" from the boot menu?
Will this help my problem at all?
Does anyone have any suggestions, I know someone out there knows whats wrong.
PLEASE HELP !!!

Update:
Ok, It also lost the one app that I was able to install, friendcasterpro.
So my phone is acting like it has no internal memory.
Why is this happening and how do I fix it?
THANKS !!!!

If your phone has it's own subforum, try posting there. You'll be more likely to get responses from people that have your device and know how to troubleshoot it.

Did you wipe data and cache when you reflashed?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

I did do a hard reset after reflashing the rom and the 0 internal memory problem is still there.
I also went into the boot screen and wiped the cache partition and it didn't help either.
I'm not sure if that answers your question, but that's what ive done so far.

As i have already stated in my previous post, it has mostlikely something to do with the partitions/filesystem.
Wiping cache does nothing but delete the contents of the cache folder.
Doing a hardreset does nothing but delete all user apps and preferences.
Both action don't have any effect on file systems or partitions.

Hmm maybe the problem is that you didn't remove the lagfix first, but the phone was working properly after the update and before you flashed the wrong rom right? Maybe you should try uninstalling the lagfix, you'll need to flash CWM first and then flash the uninstall script. Not sure if that's the problem though, but it don't hurt to try. I've read about the no memory problem before, being caused by flashing without removing the lagfix first.

@ Dark3n - "So now the partitions are wrong/too small as you don't have an i9000, which means you will have to repartition it to fit your device."
How do I re partition it to fit my device if that is the problem?
@ MaBlo - After I installed the gingerbread update (I also did a hard reset) and the phone was working fine. It wasn't rooted any more and all apps were removed like normal. I could install things and I had no problems. The 0 system memory problem happened after I flashed the wrong Rom and install the original rom back on the phone.
The phone wouldn't boot at all when the phone was on the wrong rom. Thats why I used odin and put an original rom back on the phone. This is when I got it to reboot like normal but now it says I have 0 system memory. I can't install almost anything and if I reboot my phone it loses any settings changes or apps that I did manage to get installed?
Someone has to know why this is happening, anyone?

I'm going re-flash an original rom back again but this time I'm going to re-partition and see if that helps.
Ill post back with my results

Ok after reflash with original rom and .pit file and repartition it loads the Samsung screen then goes back to the boot screen with this message after I try to hard reset:
E: Can’t mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(invalid argument)
E: Can’t mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(invalid argument)
E:install_application_for_customer:Can’t mount D
ATA:
Your storage not prepared yet. Please use UI me nu for format and reboot action.
I then click reboot now and it loads up like normal except I still get the dailybriefing force close, twlauncher force close, and my system still has 0 memory ???????
What in gods name did I do to this phone????
SOMEONE has to know how to fix it????
---------- Post added at 10:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:08 PM ----------
Ok I tried using the USCC samsung gingerbread updater to see if maybe that would fix it. After it did its flash the phone was now stuck in a boot loop. It would never go into the phone, it would just keep loading, get stuck then reload and so on and so on.
I finally pulled the battery and went into the boot menu. I now get this error message.
E:failed to mount /data/fota (no such file or directory)
#manual mode#
When I try to wipe the data this is my message I get.
--Wiping data.....
Formatting /data...
E:format_volume: rfs format failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
Formatting /dbdata....
Formatting /cache....
Data wipe complete.
E: failed to mount /preinstall (no such file or directory)
E: install_application_for_customer:Can't mount /preinstall
your storage not prepared yet, please use UI me nu for format and reboot actions.
Now its still stuck in a boot loop and I cannot get my phone to work at all anymore.
Looks like I'm officially screwed unless someone knows what I did wrong and could help me fix it.........
SIGH.......

Maybe this will help you?

I currently have an Evo 4g but have worked on some friends Samsung's so take what I say as just a possibility...
In Odin there is a check box that says re-partition, by default it is not checked. I would recommend finding the original version of the software that came on your phone and use Odin to flash it back on with the box checked. Once that is done start over from scratch.
A trick I have found with TI backup is to restore all apps but not the data. I ran into some issues going from Froyo to GB on mine when I restored data but in general just updating the apps and setting up the accounts again manually seemed to be a much better option for me.

Same thing happened to me. Look up rfs formatter for the fascinate. After flashing it through recovery, flash your rom after while still in recovery. I had the same problem, this seemed to fix it for me on froyo. There may be other ways to fix though. Here's a link for it http://db.tt/JRseDsT. So, I know this post is REALLY old, but would you happen to still have a copy of the 2.2 ROM? I can't find it anywhere.

What Did I Do Wrong?

Ok so I have Vahalla Final flashed through Odin as my first ROM on this phone. Everything has been great for a few days and I flashed the lighting tweak today with no issues. Just a little while ago I made a backup and flashed the Linda voices and the Ki3 modem bc I saw where the KJ6 didn't allow long text messages. When I flashed the modem some blue words popped up really zoomed in on another screen then it was done. The phone was laggy so i tried to delete everything and restore like I had done numerous times on old phone.
I did a factory reset then cache then tried to format system. These are all steps i used to successfully take on other phone. It won't let me format the system though. Says: "format_volume failed to mount "/system" error formatting system!"
Where did I go wrong? Am I supposed to do some more wacky things on this phone for a restore? Everything else on it seems to take 20 more steps

CWM versions prior to those in bhndven's Slightly Modified Stock kernels have a problem with mounting/unmouting the /system partition in GB. I believe you can backup and restore user data, but nothing on the /system partition.
Flashing the KI3 modem shouldn't have had an effect like you're describing, though. I can't say I've had an issue like that at all or heard of people having that issue after flashing the modem.

So everything should run fine after trying the actual restore of my backup even though i couldn't format the system? I have a backup but don't want to restore over data that wasn't deleted or whatever. If that's possible.
How the hell do i know which modem to use anyways? There's like 10 to choose from
Uh yeah I forget it tries to format system anyways when restoring... and it couldn't. So what do i do? Re-flash the GB starter pack way through Odin?

As for the modem, I'm using KI3 on mine. You already did a factory reset so you should be able to just re-flash Valhalla.
Trying now. Does Vahalla automatically change all the mounts that the other roms require changing before flashing?

I'm not sure about that one. Definitely go check the original Valhalla post to make sure you don't have to set the mounts.

No worries. Good luck
Hey I still have an issue. I reflashed Vahalla through CWM and it was fine at first all the way through setting everything up like it was before. Ran smooth. I went to the market this morning and checked for updates and Google Search, Maps and Superuser updated. Phone started acting really laggy again. Scrolls really slow, pulls up GO Launcher menu slowly, etc.
It seems to me that the re flash installed over the existing data that was left on the phone since i couldn't format my system.
My new question is, what's the best way to re do everything including formatting the system if I can't format through CWM? If I flash through Odin does that format everything? Or am I better of just going through the whole GB Starter Pack process again?? Or will that even work now since i've already done it?

Restored w titanium..... ugh.. Flashing a new zip doesn't wipe anything right? Just installs over whats already there right?

If you flashed and "it was fine at first all the way through setting everything up"...
try reflashing as you did before. Do fresh installs on as much as you can ONE AT A TIME. And then restore ONE AT A TIME what you can't do fresh installs on. It sounds like one of your backups is not agreeing with the system. Install/Restore ONE AT A TIME and play with phone between each to see if you can determine which backup your system is not agreeing with.
Did that make sense??
EDIT: And make sure to wipe dalvik cache and cache partition before you reflash as is always recommended.

Yeah it makes sense thanks. I will do this despite how impatient I am (see where that got me). I'm just got spoiled on another phone that was way way easier to work with. Weren't as many options to screw up either.
Any suggestions on how I can get my system to format for future reference?
I feel like it's Go Launcher for some reason. In cased you missed it though, I didn't start having lag issues until I flashed the Ki3 modem and linda voices one after another. I have a good backup but I can't format system to restore it.

I have never formatted my system nor read anybody wanting/needing to format their system. A factory reset is what people use to clean the gremlins along with wiping dalvik cache and cache partition. Bhundven has recommended flashing the same rom twice in a row I believe to help make sure all installs correctly (I think he was talking about bootloaders when he recommended that).
But a factory reset is what I think you are trying to accomplish with formatting your system.

I use GoLauncher on Vahalla Black with no problems. I think it has to do with your backup... not the app itself.
I wiped caches, did factory reset, tired to format system again with no luck and accidentally restarted before re-flashing Vahalla. Which, I guess I didn't really need to do anyways if it's an App causing the issue. I guess the factory reset would be enough. Smooth again so i will try some fresh reinstalls now. Thanks for the noob patience

Ok cool. In another phones forum a system wipe is actually suggested a lot. I think... I did it every time on the G2x before installing any new roms or backups. I wasn't doing it at first but started after someone suggested it. But yeah I think the factoy reset is enough. Seems to be enough so far.

[Q] Wiping Data wont wipe data.

So I am going to type out my story so that nothing is missed. I really wanna fix my phone.
*I started out a regular user. Saw TWEAKED 3.0BETA and give it a try. When the final release came out I put it on no problem.
*YESTERDAY My phone tried to update facebook, got an error like "wrong file size" or something stupid, it crashed and I could care less.
*THIS MORNING I wake up and I had a text message from my GF with a picture attached, I couldn't see the picture like normal and downloading it downloaded a blank file!
*SO, I decided to BOOT into CWM and erase everything. Wipe Data. Wipe Cache. Wipe Delvik. Then proceeded to put in Tweaked 3.1 which came out not to long ago.
*After doing so, the phone would boot into where it normally would, but then the "first start wizard" would crash and force close, along with every other process on the phone looping their crashes over and over etc.
*SO, this time I tried using ODIN to flash back to 4D. Set it up just like IMNUTS post said to, including the PIT file, did it, and booted up. SAME THING. Every process would crash including the new user wizard.
After letting it crash loop for while it finally got silent enough for me to skip the wizard and see whats on the phone. ALL MY OLD APPS ARE STILL THERE. Pandora, and all my other apps, still installed, and apparently, CRASHING upon its boot use or whatever.
What do I need to do. Ive tried to ODIN flash every stock version of the charge rom and my apps are still there. Still kicking.
Worst part is months ago my mother (who I share the family plan with) had to cancel the warranty because we are all low on cash, and even worse I lost my job 2 weeks ago so I can't get a new phone.
HELP!!!! Thanks in advance!

have you tried mounting /data & /system before you did a full format?
also you should try to re-partition when you ODIN back... that FORCES
a partition format and then re-installs the OS

mounting /data & /system would change it to say "unmount?"
but as far as odin goes, I checked the box that said re-partition. I followed IMNUTS post down to the letter, all my apps are still there.

yes, make sure it says "unmount" after you choose those options...
CWM for the charge sometimes has troubles and need a little help
get going. did you have a *.pit when you selected re-partition? it
wont do anything unless you have a *.pit file...
I know it's not good to hotlink so I will give you the page link as well
as the link itself (as there are TONS of choices)

yes. I know on the EVO you needed to format a couple of times to make sure that CWM actually formatted correctly.
So you might wanna try that. also did you try going to
Privacy -> Factory data restore option?
mind you I think you do need the stock recovery option to do that but I know that works well.
Just ODIN a stock recovery.. it shouldn't touch any custom items you might have.

I can't get into the phone, it wont get past the setup wizard. all the applications force close over and over and over again. i did however use the factory recovery mode to wipe and that did nothing either....
I just set it to "unmount" on both the data and system and now im wiping. I remember when I first started with this after wiping once with CWM the next few times wouldn't take long at all because there was nothing to wipe....
so i did as you said with the data and system, wiped it, and nothing, damn crap still there.
it literally wont erase it

you MUST install an OS after you use this or you will boot loop into recovery.
this purges everything in the phone. (Non-recursively deletes)
I haven't tried this on mine as I am beta testing... but what can it hurt for yours?

Flash that in CWM (I assume it's a CWM zip? Didn't bother to check) and flash Tweaked 3.1 full CWM afterwards. Have both on the card ready to go.
Edit: oops I meant 3.2 not 1
Edit 2: nope, definitely meant 1. What am I doing this morning?
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
have that CWM zip and another installation ready to go on the root of the SDCard.
flash the wiper and then install the OS
doesn't matter what ROM you have...
Did that zip work?

haven't tried yet. i was given samsung pst so im trying that atm. afterwards as a last resort ill use what you mentioned.
okay, so i did it. put on cwm, both tweaked 3.1 rom and that wipe all file on the sd card. booted it up. ran the wipe file. then ran tweaked. booted up, and it stuck at the samsung logo. then i figured it was wiped, so i went and hooked it up for odin and put EP4D on it again so i can get fresh, and as soon as i got in all my apps were there, and everything was crashing one process after another.
i think the phone is borked and non recoverable.
Did you happen to mount the /system and /data first as previously mentioned?
That should have forcefully removed everything. Also on a normal basis (if not using a PIT) it won't erase /data ... it never has for me anyways.
How much time does it give you when you get the FC's until it happens again (the FC) can you try
To manually uninstall? ( Applications -> Manage Applications and then deleting then one by one? Or take titanium backup and run a batch to delete the applications in one go....
I'm sorry, I'm just trying to figure this out and help you the best way possible.

Also have you tried a non rooted ODIN? With a PIT?

[Resolved] [Q] [Help] No cell service after wipe

Hello,
This is going to be kinda long, I want to give all details I can remember in case it helps.
I decided this morning that I was going to try out the unofficial CM11 rom for Galaxy Nexus GSM. So, first thing I do is a backup from Clockwork Recovery (latest touch recovery flashed).
After that, I flash the rom, and the gapps. I reboot to see if it works, and after 5 minutes of use everything looks pretty sucessful.
So, adb pull my backup and offload it to my computer in the case that something goes really wrong, because I'd like to get a clean start. So, I wipe the device as completely as I can in Clockworkmod Recovery. I then adb push the cm11 rom and the gapps roms referenced above. I use Clockworkmod Recovery to flash those onto the device, reboot and start playing around then realize that I have no cell service. Try manually registering on my T-mobile to no avail.
I think this is a baseband problem, so I fastboot flash radio (stock nexus radio rom from 4.3), reboot into the system and still no service.
Then I begin thinking my phone radio has completely failed, so I take a simcard from my girlfriend's phone pop it into mine, reboot and still no service. Reinstall my original sim card.
Then I am REALLY thinking my radio has failed, so I figure I'll just flash the full 4.3 stock suite in case I'm missing something small because I don't understand how something works. Still no service.
So, as a last resort, I push the Clockworkmod Recovery backup back into the /sdcard/0 directory, restore in Clockworkmod Recovery, reboot and it works(!).
Now I start wondering what I'm failing to understand about this problem, so I go ahead and do a factory reset in Clockworkmod Recovery and back to no service(!).
I really thought I understood how it worked, but I must be missing something here, or maybe Clockworkmod Recovery is wiping something it shouldn't be? The final thing I can add is each time I fail to get service in the installation, the service bars light up for 1/2 second to 2 seconds during boot. Maybe someone could help me spitball what's happening here?
Thank you very much in advance.
I think all yu must do is download the latest stock firmware ment for for your device.. from internet.. and install that properly on yur device.. this will do every thing right.. see I too am not at all good with using programme stuff and so.. therefore I keep the copy of firmware with me always.. that helps when I almost destroy my phone
tc and good luck..

and it might be possible thet the rom which yu are trying is not ment for your device version.. chack that too correctly..
Problem found (not yet solved, but that's another question)
OK, I found the problem. My non volatile memory got corrupted. I pulled an image from the EFS nv memory partition devfs file, mounted it as loop on my localhost and got nothing but a lost+found directory. It's not a terrible thing, but from now on when I wipe this phone, I will need to adb push my /data/radio backup to the EFS nv memory partition. That is, at least until I find out exactly what I need to do to reconstruct the memory partition. Shouldn't be that hard, but I really need a good description of what is in all the EFS memory partition files for the Galaxy Nexus. :good: I'll dig around the forums a bit, maybe ask someone for the directory structure, maybe I'll be able to, at least, partially restructure that memory partition with a good old dd'ing. Maybe I'll root my girlfriend's Galaxy Nexus so I can get the structure proper.
Hope this helps someone else!

[Q] Cannot write/wipe

Hi
The tab P6800 I got here with me had data corruption, boot-loop. I tried to flash CWM/TWRP using odin to backup the data first, but unfortunately whenever flash complete (without error) and the device reboot, it still go back to stock recovery. I think this tab had some kind of protection.
Gaining root in stock recovery, I managed to backup the data using dd. However when I tried to wipe and reboot, nothing changed. It boots back with all previous data intact.
Then I tried to manually zeroed out the partition using dd. No luck there, stills intact.
Tried to mount the data partition, delete and write some stuff into it, it can successfully delete, write and read back. However when rebooted, the data is gone and back to where it was before. Which probably means the data written before probably cached into ram.
Is the memory is in some kind of read-only mode? Is there is any fix for this? Or is it just emmc wear out and need a board replacement?
Sorry to hear your experience, it does seem remarkably similar to mine that I posted here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-7-7/help/wont-install-rom-wont-install-apps-t2908578
I never did find a solution though but if you get some success I should love to hear it.
Likewise I suspect the emmc, I think I have the superbrick bug as I recall running the test app when I first got the device. So I am guessing this has manifested itself. Very frustrating too, my Tab is in tip top condition otherwise.
Sorry to hear you too.
I already tried everything I can think of except NAND erase and Flash lock on ODIN. Don't know what flash lock means though.
Guess replacing emmc/board is the only way to solve it now.
I'm giving up.
