I have them cheap $50 LG Ally from Verizon with unlimited data plan. I have no internet at home and was thinking if there is a way to make my smartphone into a wireless router. Is this possible? Thank you
im not familiar with that phone.
however, there are many tutorials on how to do this all over the internet.
first off you have to have a phone that is rootable.
once the superuser has been enabled you can use android tether found in the market to access wireless internet from your phone.
hope that helps
Since Verizon will start to charge extra for tethering on June 15th, I am looking for a free app to tether via USB.
I tried android-wired-tether since I have root access, but that app does not work.
I am aware of pdanet, easytether and tether for andriod, but all are paid apps.
If there is not a free usb tether app, what is the best free working wifi one for the droid charge?
Thanks!
I would recommend Klink tether they have a free and a paid version. Its way better. Also the developer of the app responds quickly if you have problems. Hope that helps

I really like "Open Garden Wifi" for wifi tethering. many people really seam to like Barnacle Wifi Tether also.
I have been using PDAnet for usb tether and wireless tether (root) for wifi.
Both seem to have been working good on the Charge.
I used them both with the Fascinate for months.
I just bought my charge a few days ago and recently rooted with the new altered beast ODIN ROM. Is there any tether software that doesn't require a client installation on the tethered computer, or maybe just the phone drivers?

WIFI tether options don't require any software on the client, just a working wireless card and OS that supports Wifi (can't think of one that doesn't)...
Wireless tether for root users is what I use
Barnacle is another free option
I am sure there are more....
hi, i haven't used my phone for a wifi hotspot in a very long time on verizon. i saw the thread about using Wifi tether for ROOT users with the s3. I'm currently on the grandfathered unlimited plan. Can anyone that has used Wifi tether for ROOT users on their android verizon phones recently confirm that verizon doesn't know you are using the wifi hotspot without paying and doesn't charge you? I plan to only use it rarely (ie: cable modem service goes out, on vacation with slow hotel wifi service for laptop etc), thanks!

I use FoxFi. I haven't been charged. It is basically the same concept as Wii for root.
I've used wifi for root both on my GS3 and before I upgraded on a DInc. Never been charged. Data is data, they can't tell how you use it.
Neither of these apps have worked for my rooted Verizon S3, niether will broadcast the signal even though it says it is running, however, I have not had a problem with wifi for root on my nexus.

Hey, I just gota Nexus 5 phone yesterday, and I was planning on using wifi tether to connect my old phone and my ps3 to the internet. I'm able to create a mobile hotspot using the Nexus 5 settings, however I get no internet traffic. My PS3 tells me the connection times out. And my phone fails to log in.
Does anyone know if MetroPCS allows wifi tether? And if they don't, is there any way to bypass it. I'm on the $50 plan right now.
So I bought the $5 Mobile Hotspot service. It worked for a bit, But my wifi tether still did not consistently work. I eventually disabled it because of the issues.
Does anyone know what you have to do to get Wifi Tether up and running fully on Nexus 5 with MetroPCS service?
I am using a Galaxy Grand Prime, Rooted on stock rom.
I am able to usb tether without being metered on METROPCS Unlimited data plan.
However I have tried to enable ICS for Xbox 360 and have had no success at all. I have also tried this using NAT32 and can never get it to connect to live.
I am downloading at 3mb/s so its def not my speed. HELP PLZZZZZ
