How hard would it be to build this ROM design - Samsung Infuse 4G

This ROM features a spinning radial app wheel, with 7-8 primary user apps
The central (hub) area would be the number one used app (probably the phone or browser).
The user can choose what app to put on the wheel and where.
The notification bar is on the side
Time, date and day is transparent / opacity in the background of the wallpaper.
At least what do you think of the layout?
I transitioned from a blackberry to an Infuse so I had some preferences stick to me I suppose.

Just an idea for the spinning part
Both for fun and how the radial app manager functions, one could theoretically (as it hasn't been made yet ) spin the wheel when bored, and the wheel would spin maybe 3 times in circles depending on the speed of the swiping motion.
I was thinking about how this could possibly function, when scrolling through a list, one can sort of pull on the list as it were a rubber band, the list seems to bounce off of the borders of the phone (if you're looking through Gmail try this).
Could this be a way that the radial app manager would be built? Based on this property/effect from the digitzer?

Shoot a pm to our 2 best dev in this forum gtg and mikymike, if anyone they are the two can help you with your idea. I like your design though.

I don't think either of them have done any launcher app development... And that's what you're probably going to need to do.
You might want to see if any open-source launcher apps exist. Looks like ADW is open source:
http://code.google.com/p/adw-launcher-android/

Well alright, perhaps let me ask this instead.
To graphically and functionally design a 'look' of a phone, what does that fall under?
I mean positioning the notifications bar on the left side (right handed people) and pulling some of the notification icons from the main notification window and placing them elsewhere (in my case under the wheel) what is the level of difficulty to do something like that?
I had this program once to shift around the icons on a black berry (battery icon, signal icon etc...)
Is that theme designing?
The whole wheel idea isn't exactly this.
How the wheel functions:
Has an imaginary axis that this circle of radius r (not sure how big yet) spins on.
The wheel can spin in either direction and the spinning speed varies on the swipe speed of the user's finger.
The user can assign which 7-8 apps are placed on the slots on the wheel (equally divided say 45 degrees apart for 8 apps).
Also to put the clock stuff sort of dissolved in the background of the home screen, how hard is that to do? (Optional but I'd prefer it to be fixed).
I don't know who the top 2 developers are (no offense to those guys) I just see a lot of different developing software out there.
As always thank you guys for your replies.

Didn't someone post something that had been done along these lines a few weeks back?
not sure where I had seen it originally...but here is what I believe I had previously seen..it's the "chariot effect" in GO launcher EX

Could very well be man.
There's 7 billion people so lots of mind.
This is just for myself sure I'd share but I am highly an aesthetics guy (ie going to school for industrial design/engineering).

Seems like an awesome idea to me .. as far as I can tell though it would need some rom development as well as an entire launcher. I dont think you can just move the status bar. I could very well be wrong though. the rest im pretty sure could just be done with a launcher though. I'd help if I could but I wouldnt know where to start :/

well it is possible for apps to hide the stock notification bar and then you could in theory get access to the notification and status interfaces and do that with just a launcher app. but it wouldn't be as efficient as a framework mod but it wouldn't be easy either way.

A food for thought
I'd also like to not have the stupid giant time in the top portion of the screen
I was thinking that a see through calendar appointment / list would be there instead (business)
I also (space optimization) would place the notification as a concentric outer circle on the outside of the app wheel with a small tab with the time on it.
See image:

I bet you would get more responses in the android development section.

Today plugin at BOTTOM of screen?

Is it possible to force a today screen plugin to the bottom of the screen without needing some sort of spacer plugin in between it and other today screen items? I want to have an icon bar across the bottom (easy button access with one hand) but still use things like the calendar that will change size above it on the screen...
Thanks!
No, you can't force a plugin there but you can use an app like VJTrayLaunch to place shortcuts in the tray that is already at the bottom.
Actually you can. There is a free plugin floating around called SPACER. Its actually a today plugin that allows you to put "X" amount of empty space on the today screen. So it may take a few tries to get it perfect, but basically you will just have to configure it one pixel short of it making scrollbars on your today screen to get whatever the desired plugin is to the bottom.
andycormier - I think you missed the point of his question. He specifically asked not for a spacer...
V
Thanks for the thoughts guys. I'm after something as lite as possible and skinning everything with WA2/WAD probably isn't what i'm after. The tray unfortunately is utterly useless for using a thumb (holding it one handed) to press buttons, and you can't force large icons there!
Anyone know how things like the HTC tray and FHMTray (i think it's something like that) use the tray area and if it might be possible to modify the tray area to accommodate large icons (or better yet has anyone actually tried to make the tray area useable for a today plugin so you could put anything there - i think there may be a lot of people who'd love something like that!).
Thanks again for the feedback guys.
mikechannon: I've never used Wisbar, it's just not what I need. It's too much. It's perhaps some of the most advanced coding I've seen, but too much for most purposes.
I actually don't recommend VJTrayLaunch for reasons of resource usage - for a few icons, it's fine. For more then 3 icons, I suggest using PHM Tray Launch.
There are other ways to relocate Today plugins - see SideX.

Here relocating the keyboard, but it can relocate today plugins too. Great app!
I know it's not required, but I've also written VJTodaySpacer that does some special voodoo. Unreleased, although one day when VJToggleToday is finished I'll release it.
V
Thanks for the input VJ. I like the concept of sidex - tried it but it's too clunky to use. I'm after something to free us as much usable space as possible with the exception of a nice menu bar. Ideally if i could i'd loose the tray and bottom bar (i know what my softkeys do from the today screen!), and have an iLauncher bar across the very bottom with a set of large icons that would be perfect for thumb presses. Any app that is in use can then have the menu bar back when it's loaded as i won't need the icons there when using something other than the today screen. That way i can have something usable for thumbs and also have a lot of information on the today screen.
I've tried freeing up space with your tool to remove all menu bars too, but it isn't yet a clean interface! Great idea, but i've ended up with things like the top part of the today screen showing while in other programs. If it could be active while on the today screen and nonactive while in programs it'd probably serve the exact function i want - low overhead and clears the useless junk from the today screen.
If i knew how to, i'd attempt it myself but i wouldn't know where to start!
Thanks again.
VJ: I'm just wondering, how difficult is it to get cLaunch to 'move' to the bottom of the screen? cLaunch is a Today plugin and it may not be possible to get a Today plugin to move to the bottom of the screen. While the 'tray' thing is a program itself, hence it is possible for it to move to the bottom of the screen, right? I had the source code downloaded and prepare to be messing with it, once I got the hang of this embedded VC.
Hanmin, moving the plugin is easy enough, but unfortunately the Today screen is compiled from sequentially drawing each Today plugin one after the other. The height of the Today window is calculated from the (reported) height of each Today plugin. So merely moving the Plugin in Win32 won't necessarily allow it to be displayed. It'll just confuse Today.
Using a Today spacer is an easy alternative IMHO.
jdl1306: good idea about only hiding the start bar on the Today screen. It's something that was suggested a long time ago, but I've not worked on the app for quite some time, one or two things to finish first (I've also been unable to program for several months, work)
For the time being, why not hide the tray (dcinobar) and hide just the soft keys using VJToggleToday II? Then, you have a clean interface, just the Start bar showing?

Updated and nicer
I once had an idea for this app, so i started learning Java to make it happen.
I had a need to keep important information from my clipboard at the front of my attention (e.g text message,email etc) so I added some features and the result is NClip

I had the idea of such an app for months!
Thanks for it!
the cat ran across the road?!
wow! m already starting to like this app,

pretty cool,i've been looking for somthing like this.
Suggestions
This is a great great app and a really good idea.. but I wanna give you some suggestions. The GUI is messy and doesn't properly use space.
On the very top is the Clipboard entry area (this should be at the bottom as its not usually used) it occupies immediately 1/2 of the screen with a large area that is totally wasted. Then, if there are contents on the clipboard they are not displayed nicely in the window (really ugly).
Then because of large unused area for the clipboard, now the Custom entry are is hidden when the keyboard is pulled-up (which by the way should pop-up immediately and it doesn't). Then if I want to add an icon, that menu selection is at the very bottom, so I have to close the keyboard to get there and, that menu doesn't have icon previews, just bullets (it needs icon previews as like the PICK ICON menu item). Finally the NOTE CUSTOM MESSAGE is at the very bottom (worse place), needs to be at the top.
All this makes a single entry an endless effort of way too many clicks to get anything done. I'm on a 7" Galaxy Tab. Look at the screenshots and get inspired
Finally, for this app to make ANY SENSE, it needs to be AS EASY TO ACCESS AS THE NOTES IT CREATES!!!!!!!!!! So, make it run as a hidden notification so it can be pulled down from the taskbar and activated (like the app Clipper - Clipboard manager for example.. you can check it out on the market if you are not sure what I mean)
Really nice app though. I want to love it.. you just need to make it right now
I've already added some features to the program, including the short cut you suggested, just my keystore is 100+ miles away on my desktop so I cant yet publish the update (its been sitting around for over a month).
I have also updated the gui, it shows only what is relevant at a given moment and keyboard no longer poses an issue on my nexus s, literally the app has everything you want (its just not published), i'm working on it

havok123, thanks for the feedback, this is great news! I didn't mean at all to be harsh or overly criticizing.. think your app is truly fantastic and therefor I just would like it you to get it perfect! I'm happy you decided to learn Java just to program this... totally worth it!
When you have an update for the or if you want me to help you beta test/trouble shoot an updated version, post the info here on the thread or PM me. Id love to help you if I can.
Keep up the great work and when its perfect make a paid version. It will be worth it and I think many people would buy it. You can definitely count me in and your work should be rewarded!
Just uploaded update finally.
Updated to 3.0

Updated GUI
Bug fixes
Great update, interface much more workable & cleaner.
One suggestion that immediately comes 2mind is, get rid of the sticky app icon that shows up on taskbar when selecting the enable shortcut option. No ned & cluttery. IfU add a note without chooding custom icon, now there are DOUBLE app icons on the taskbar being displayed one of which is NOT a note.. very confusing and unecessary.
If the enable shortcut opion is chosen, we know its there in the pulldown menu already, thats enough &keeps taskbar cleaner for actual notifications only
going to get on it over christmas break xD

App Drawer Concept - Need Developer

I was thinking about a stand alone organized app drawer ( by stand alone i mean like "all apps organizer, you can find it on market).
This was my concept (very childish paint but you shoud get it)
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The main objective of the app drawer is to have all the apps organized by type in the same "screen" and if they does not fit into one screen you can down scroll to see the remaining apps, just like a normal app drawer. Then to change type (like games,apps,utility,internet etc) just side scrool.
Everything would be organized alphabetically on a screen and there should be the ability to move an app throug the screen to change category. Last "screen" should be uncategorized and over there will be placed all the installed apps to be moved on the right category manually.
i don't know if this has been made but i think it could be a very good app drawer
sorry my english and say what you think about this concept
This post is to find someone that would like to develop this
There is something similar in ADW LauncherEX.
You can create groups of programs and swipe through them on the app drawer. Although it doesn't have any transition between the groups, it just changes, which is a bit dull.
I do love the idea though
i really like the concept!
This is a really great idea!
I think it would be even cooler if the app categorized the apps for you. If it gets a few wrong, you would still be able to move it to a different screen. I would hate going through each app to add it, if you know what I mean.
That's more like the webos style, pages and categories of apps. I like this design a lot.

This is MY IDEA!!
The day I bought my Captivate several months ago, its the first thing I thought of that Android could do with its app drawer that would make it awesome. Have all apps categorized by user created categories and then in alphabetical order with new programs automatically going into these categories or else placed in a temporary folder for the user to categorize them later on.
And then for navigation you could have a side scrolling menu that lists all the categories so that you can immediately jump to that category at the touch of a button. I have it completely mapped out how it would work in my mind, but unfortunately I have zero programming capabilities. Crap.
This is a very neat concept. I think it would be really cool for the app drawer to categorize all of your apps for you by default. Obviously there should be room to reorganize and create your own categories of apps as well.
Very neat!

Categorizing things is annoying just the first time then just install and move the application. With multi select it would be fast to move application.
The only thing we need now is a developer
I agree this is an awesome idea and would be much easier to use than the standard app drawer
By the way, the app AppCat is vaguelly similar to this idea but not very user friendly but i dont know if that helps with anything
RDS
I know this is on webOS phones, but great idea for Android! Sometimes I feel my app drawer is too cluttered, loving the idea.
I'm trying appcat to see what it is.
EDIT:
YEs, it categorizes verything but too many categories and is not ok for daily use as main app drawer. too long to find an app between those categories and interface
take a look at appGrouper aswell it may be closer to what you are looking for
RDS
actually, look at the home replacement tag home. It's app drawer is very close to what you want and is quite a nice launcher alternative

You could have been learning how to code for the entire time this thread was inactive! Then you would be able to bring your own idea to life.

[APP] Rocket Launcher! What do you think?

You can also download it from the market here: <Paid version><Free versions>
Really amazing concept.
What is the difference between the two versions?
I think preference is spelled wrongly as well.
No way to redorder widgets?
Hey! Thanks for the kind words, let me answer your questions:
1. The difference right now is the paid version dosen't have an add in the app drawer, although that add is not producing that much revenue anyway. So the paid version is just basically to support us. So far it's paying the electricity bill but it's only doing that mind you.
2. Where is it spelt wrong?
3. Yeah you can, it should explain that in the video. If it dosen't: you just press the bar next to the widget, and then press the bar of a different widget and they will get swapped.
i like your choice for a name
are you limited to only having 6-7 icons on the screen?
Ads in a launcher are a no-go. Why not just disable an option or add something special to the paid version?
I will never use a launcher that features advertisements - the free version of the W7 launcher is the only other one I can think of, and I used it for all of 2 minutes before the ads drove me insane.
@GoneMADSoftware No you can have as many as you want in that strip in the middle
@Braneless You do have a point since right now we are making nothing off the adds, except people complaining about their existence. I'll think of something that the paid version will feature so the users will use it.
I looks cool

Like the look of the launcher a lot, if we could move widgets themselves it would be nicer, if you only have one widget you can't move it... also not all of my apps show in the list. More home screens and icons would be nice, no landscape mode, it cuts it off and the ability to scroll makes the launcher move around in portrait mode landscape just doesn't look right.
Great concept, keep up the work guys and I agree, great name for a launcher.

If you only have one widget you can move it arou... I don't follow. It's a widget list, like an app list, a lists start at the top therefore the first (and in this case only) widget would be at the top... where else would it be? I mean it's clearly a list of widgets so where else would you have it?
The fact that not all of you apps still baffles me. I just can't seem to find a way that works to get all the apps, properly, on all model phones. The way its done now seems to be the standard one and it works on most phones... what model phone do you have? I'll think of something... I do have 2, 1000-or more page android books lined up to read, if only my E-book reader would arrive this century, but i digress.
More home screens... i'd rather use the one home screen that exists already and expand it sideways with more branches. So you can add more icons and what-not. If i just add more screens it's like every other launcher out there.
I don't want it to have a landscape mode and i will probably remove the dodgy landscape that it has right now since it looks very wired. The launcher moves a bit in portrait mode because on a HVGA or QVGA screen the picture itself is bigger than the screen of the phone therefore a QVGA user won't be able to see all the icons without scrolling. I do admit that the slight movement of scrolling that it dose right not is a tad annoying and i will get around to fixing that; but there are only so many hours in the day and i've been having huge issues with sony xperia phones not displaying the icons of apps since yesterday so... need break!
Cheers for your feedback though!
Suggestion
Cool concept. Being able to select the icons on the home screen would be nice. Like the look of the stock ones from the launcher but prefer to use different SMS and Launcher apps. Having those apps Icon's mixed with the Stock phone etc. is less clean then it could be. Keep up the good work

Idea for futuristic all inclusive android launcher

I was looking through different android launcher apps, and I realised that none of them really were futuristic enough for what I was looking for haha
so I'm posting on here with some very basic designs and explanations in the hopes that someone who is good with app developing will pick up the project.
please note that these are very basic designs so I apologise if I don't explain it well enough, please feel free to ask questions.
I reference Next Launcher 3D in this quite a bit when explaining animations or graphics as that is the launcher that has come close enough to what I'm looking for, but not quite.
Basically this is a simplistic, minimalistic yet futuristic launcher
open onto a screen with 4 Buttons; apps, Phone, SMS and Widgets

this will be very simplistic, but effects preferable as I'm going for the futuristic look
upon double tapping the big empty space on the right of the screen, a smaller screen will slide in from the right:
(drive.google.com/file/d/0B8rTbu0kCCptaTVMVHJiRVc4ckU/edit?usp=sharing)
this contains notification bubbles for social networks, a quick post option (without opening a new window) and quick access to media apps
swipe to the right to get rid of it and return to the first screen.
Upon clicking the apps icon, the other 3 icons shrink to the right (but remain clickable) and the apps 'shoot' out of the apps icon into the app drawer (like the folder shoot effect in next launcher 3d)
(drive.google.com/file/d/0B8rTbu0kCCptX0Q5YVNXUFFRT1E/edit?usp=sharing)
click the apps icon again to close it and the other icons return to normal size
upon clicking the phone icon the other icons disappear, the icon moves to the top of the screen, a back button appears next to the icon and an integrated dialler 'shoots' from the phone icon
(drive.google.com/file/d/0B8rTbu0kCCptUUJ6VDhRdXhzbUE/edit?usp=sharing)
I realise it's very different to have an integrated dialler but I like the idea of it and I'm surprised it hasnt been done much before
upon clicking the back icon, the dialer goes back into the phone icon and the other icons return
upon clicking the sms icon, the other icons disappear, the icon moves to the top of the screen, a back button appears next to the icon and an integrated sms inbox 'unfolds' from the sms icon (think window blinds)

upon clicking the back button it folds up again
upon clicking on a sms thread it opens and allows you to message people
clicking back returns you to the main screen
upon clicking on the widget icon, the screen slides to the left, revealing a standard customisable widget grid (default 4X4) and you click the home button on your device to go back.
I Hope I've explained this well enough and I hope someone picks up the project as I would love to have this launcher
That sounds pretty cool. I'd test it out for sure.
Nice ideas
I hope some developer takes on thins, looks nice.
I think the icons shrinking to the left can be replaced with a slide menu like the one from the play store.
come on people
come on developers please haha this is a good idea, the end product could end up making money on the app store, im not even selling an idea here I just want it done haha anyone?
First of all, you should add ok Google now bar. Your ideas are really cool and something I would try out. Also, for users running cm, you should also make you re launcher compatible with cyanogenmods theme engine. That way people can have a futuristic look their own way . and use moonshine icon pack
Futuristic is kinda modern Space...which I prefer!

The concept looks ideal but it still needs some work. Any developers you have contacted regarding this project @JayBlayk?
