WebOS - HTC ChaCha

Hi, TechMayhem here (LightDroider) - Was wondering if it is possible to port WebOS and where can I find a ROM?? AlexC any ideas about this?

Hmm, sounds interesting but I don't really know if we can manage to get radios and bootloaders for it.. Can't get my hands on a HP tablet to take off the software from it..
I found this thingie: http://forums.precentral.net/canuck-coding/194832-webos-quick-install.html here but I'm not that fond of it though.

One of the flaws with HP and webos was no one actually got on board and made any apps. People who bought the tablets are all over the web trying to put Android on it!
Sent from my HTC ChaCha A810e using Tapatalk

True.. but be that as it may, WebOS was based on linux kernel so porting Android apps to WebOS should be relatively easy (given the proper knowledge).
My only fear is that the OS doesn't look tweaked enough - it looks like Android's younger cousin, that will remain a baby child for the rest of it's life

WebOS on the HTC evo ?

Has someone hacked the evo to run WebOS on it ?

There is nothing that I ever heard of something like this.
I guess if you want the WebOS-experience there is no way around WebOS-Hardware... Which isn't good for now. But soon you will have more to choose from (and I expect also an Evo-like device later this year).
Looks like someone fliped it....

Not to be too bold in my assumptions but once HP get WebOS 3.0 out the door with the Pre3, i would imagine it would just be a case a custom compiled kernel to get WebOS booting on most hardware? of course theres is the issue of button mapping but 3.0 is supposedly scalable to any resolution and that should make the job of porting the OS easy enough, (if not totally illegal, but hey i think we would all look the other way)
Just my thoughts, what do you guys think?

Wont work we were porting webOS to the cdma htc hero because the specs were very much the same but you can not go above the 1.xx webOS version without it being illegal rwhitby from webOS internals shut us down most likly this will be impossible
You're saying it won't work because you where shut down by the dastardly mr Whitby but if say a script could be written to take a firmware image and modify it (Replace the kernel and editing various CSS/XML files for size and so on) like Rod and co did to get WebOS 2.0 on Pre- that would be alright wouldn't it?

Actually it was the moderators of this forum applying the forum rules regarding redistribution of copyright material which shut down that thread.

Yes. If you do things the right way, you can achieve the same result without violating copyright laws. Most people, however, tend to take the illegal easy way.

Cunning and dastardly, indeed.
Its best to just wait till the launch of webOS 3.0 before making any attempt to port. I wouldn't really want to have to re-size every element just to get it to fit on various devices before working on the (no doubt numerous) bugs that will remain.
Much props to WebOs Internals!

WebOS internals have to be the most impartial professional homebrew force on the planet.
Why is it that no devs will even touch this with a 10 ft pole?

That's possible, it would be pretty hard to get on our evos as I believe the latest WebOS only supports 320x480 ATM. Once 3.0 releases I could see this port coming to light.

怎么可能,硬件支持都不同,肯定没戏,别指望了。。。
I would run this mod in a heartbeat.
Now this would be awesome... running webs on evo hardware!
but there is too much webOS police out here.
without apps webOS is dead though, after few days i will be back to android.
WebOS on a Evo seems like a step backwards for numerous reasons. Ignoring the outdated hardware in the Evo, what fun would the OS be without the gesture area? Gestures are a huge part of what makes WebOS so simple and fun to navigate.
So that's what happened!!!!
Please please please someone do this. I loved the simple multitasking on my pre- but HATED the crappy hardware and glitches. My evo is amazing the way it is but with WebOs on it, it would be perfect.

WebOS port to higher end hardware?

As a current Motorola atrix owner as well as a pixi owner, I love the polished UI and multitasking abilities of WebOS much more than Android. That being said, the device I currently use is almost four times more powerful than my pixi and nearly as powerful as the new touchpad. I was thinking that if the homebrew community is able to port WebOS to not only more powerful hardware but more hardware in general it would greatly benefit the survival and well-being of WebOS. So would anybody want to develop a port for the Motorola Atrix? I will offer as much of my help as possible.

I would love to see this project take off! Even if I have no Atrix
In theory this can be done as WebOS built on top of Linux kernel (the same way as Android) and the kernel modifications are available from HP. But the whole OS is not open source so I'm not sure how legal a port would be... It's not a technical problem (even I was able to get to root image) but it can stop a lot of developers... But as I said, I'm fully supporting this project!
Are there anyone who knows how to extract the uImage? Or that if it has a similar initramfs as th Android zImage?
To be honest I have to reasons for choosing the atrix, 1. I have it and I want a port . 2. It should be simpler, if not at least a little more straight forward, to port the HP Touchpad's image to the Attic since they have similar specs and are both based on ARM Cortex A-9 architecture.

Well, the WebOS forums will be much more active after today!
Sweet
So that makes webOS another free mobile phone OS for companies to choose, and puts it in much more direct competition with Android (or might in time). I won't be surprised to see a lot of webOS phones in a few months.
now i want the guys at xda to do some cool **** with webos and i want more activity over here for web os
there will be a lot more activity on the precdntral forums....good news cuz I actually like webos despite the overwhelming-ness of android
Problem is HP aren't manufacturing any more devices. That's the killer...

There's already some really early talks on the direction to take on PreCentral. This is going to be awesome. If my Nexus S ever runs ICS and webOS, I will flip.

Does webOS offer anything we can't get from ICS? If so, would it make sense to create some sort of hybrid of webOS and Android that has the best of both and is able to run apps for both?

would love some webos on my htc sensation!
Have they pushed the code yet? I want to download it.

[Q] [2 ALL DEVS] Any chance to see WebOS/iOS/WP7 on NS/NS4G?

With the UnBrickable Mod?
I read that webOs was ported to the Evo, and many mobile Os can be flashed on the HD2.
So, is possible to see other mobile Operating systems on our smartphone?

Far from it. The reason we'll probably never see webos or wp7 on the nexus s is that neither of those os's are fully open source like android, in fact wp7 is completely closed source.
webOS was ported to the Evo 3D but virtually nothing worked from what I remember, making it far from useful, useable, or anything past booting really.
Ios - Never been ported to anything non-apple (as far as I know).
Meego - Possible I guess, but I dont know why anyone would bother putting that amount of time into it.
WebOS - Looking possible, its going open source i hear, but the nexus S community is only going to decrease due to the release of the Galaxy Nexus
Windows Mobile - Dead
Windows Phone 7 - This was ported to the HD2 as the HD2 was used as a test phone for the OS and the drivers got leaked! Microsoft used it as it was a high spec Windows Mobile phone. (It got android as it was very similar to other HTC phones that ran Android, such as the N1 and Desire)
Ubuntu - I guess, probably wouldn't be too hard to get going, why anyone would want to I have no idea.
BB OS - hahaha...
so.... no interest.

I realize this isn't what you're looking for, but if you're just interested in emulating the WP7 look, give Launcher7 from the market a try. I'd also recommend using the Ubermusic music player with the optional metro theme.

Webos on Android Devices (Dual Boot)

I am looking for developers to develop a ROM for the HTC Shirft or the Samsung 7in Tablet from Sprint that dual boots Ice Cream Sandwhich and Webos.
Both OSes on the device would be sweat

Personally i like Webos. But about 70% of others don't. most likely because of it's lack of customization and apps. It would be nice to see the dying OS ported to other devices to give it new life, but don't get your hopes up.
The devs simply don't seem to be too interested in porting Webos to other devices.

I know it is sad for lack of support but Webos fans will support this. A person on one of the Webos forums is trying to wire the HTC Shift to work with the touchpad's charging dock, so there is still hope!
WebOS isn't open source yet, that's why nobody is porting it. -_-
It's not open source YET, but in a few month it will be and I'm hopeful that some devs will port it on other devices then.
The are two things I'm a bit worried about is webOS for other phones. Since I read a blog post which was all about the open source plan of HP I afraid that only the Touchpads 3.x webOS will be open sourced.
The other thing is the maybe missing feature of using gestures on phones. I mean webOS is all about gestures and I love to use my Pre3 with these gestures and the special gesture area, cause it's easy to use and superfast. But when ported on a phone, let's say a Galaxy S2, will there be gestures or does the user have to use the stupid buttons?

My vote is to port it to a device with a massive user base, such as my SGS2, or an HD2. I still play with my Pre- and it sits on my coffee table. After reading The Verge post mortem I understand why it died, but it still is the best UX hands down. Imagine it running on blazing fast hardware, but I wonder how much is lost without a keyboard?
It seems that everyone has move on from webOS within the android community (well, almost everyone). I am one of the die hard fans of the OS and continue to use it daily. Of course, my needs for an OS are different from many , and I come from a solid Linux/Unix background. I have used palm products for years and followed webOS from the beginning. There are times when I come off like a fanboi for webOS but it has seemed to be an elegant solution for true multi tasking from the beginning. I hear most folks here talking of the untimely demise of webOS and cannot help but wonder if they have decided not to follow the development of Open WebOS. The community edition of webOS is due out in Sept and there are a number of major improvements coming with it. There is also the Phoenix project which may be building another tablet running the open source WebOS.
For those who have moved on from webOS and are satisfied with android, I bid you fair well. I will continue to work within the webOS community and look forward to future development. For those who are still on the fence, I would suggest a bit of patience as there are good things in the future of webOS and this fall really isn't that far off. Whichever OS you choose, remember that the touch pad that you have is still one of the few dual boot tablets on the market and (for those who were not early adopters) was purchased for a reduced price that would be hard to match by any other tablet manufacturer. The hardware is still pretty good compaired to most all dual core tablets and is still able to run cutting edge android builds. This alone would be a good argument for sticking with the touch pad but I stick with it for the things it continues to do well within webOS.

I remember when I had my pre you could place your phone in dev mode (root) by a simple dialer code reboot and itd be unlocked then you can install preware and from there install anything you want. I remember patches that added lots more functionality to the OS. Much simpler than android

I'll buy the lack of apps argument, but customization? Kiddin' me? Installing Preware couldn't be any easier if they tried. Only Windows Mobile was easier than webOS.

Ideally webOS that could run Android apps would be great. The UX on webOS is second only to Windows Phone IMO, but webOS needs the app power of Android.
I had a Pre+ for a weekend but after the third time swapping it out because of hardware problems, I gave up on it. The hardware was always the problem. They should have had HTC manufacture it like the Treos.
