[Q] New to Nexus S, any ROM recommendations - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got a used Nexus S (i9020t) coming from a Vibrant. The number of AOSP based ROMS over here is very refreshing. Anyone have a recommendation for a 2.3.5 ROM that is stable, easy on battery, and fast? (Hey, I want all three). I've been running cm7 on my Vibrant, so I'm familiar with that. Is the last nightly stable? What about the Kanged versions? Should I be swapping out kernels?
Basically I'm looking for a solid ROM that I won't have to (or want to) mess with for a while. Thanks for any suggestions.

Try my rom. I just updated it 10 minutes ago. Fast and stable. If you're trying to save battery do an undervolt and lock the max speed to 800mhz.
Edit: ROM is called -=Nexus MV=-

Thanks for the reply and thanks for releasing a ROM. Will definitely check it out.

Try a CyanogenMod 7 kang from Simms22 (you can get them on the CM7 Nightly thread): http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/gigg...cm-7.1.0-RC1-NS-KANG-signed.09142011-0558.zip
Flash the Google Apps package: http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110729-signed.zip
Use the Trinity TUV kernel (it's broken at the moment, use this build from the 11th): http://morfic.euroskank.com/NS/TUV-Any-NS+4G-11092011.zip
CM7 is just... amazing. Use this for speed and very good battery.

I would recommend cm7 miui and Peter Alfonso. All very good roms. In my opinion Pete's rom has the best battery life but try them all and see what u like best. What works good for me may not work for u lol. Just try all the roms people on here said and see what works best for u

I Love Peter Alfonso's ROM the GPA17 it's one of the best ROMs it doesn't come with any apps pre-installed which i love

Im using CM7 ...but it is very disspointing me because of the battery..
just last for 10 hours..

I've been running Formels MIUI, it's on the devs forum here on the Nexus S, it seems to be stable compared to the stock MIUI and battery is better.
Still, I'm also looking for a Rom that improves the camera, recording still isn't as good as I wanted and sometimes I get the random freeze&reboot....

[Q] Is it wise to wait for stable cyanogen mod

Hi,
I've searched but I didn't find this.
I've read that some phones never get a full "stable" release of cyanogen. I am currently running masters voodoo rooted rom but I quite fancy CM. Does it look like there will be a stable version, and does anyone have any idea how far in the future that might be.
Or is the current RC solid as a rock right now, or does it have bugs.
Thanks
Nexus S is a CM officially supported phone, it will certainly get CM7 final. I've been running CM7 RC1 since the day after I got my phone a bit more than a week ago, so far it works quite well and stable.

Thanks for your reply. I'll hang on then. I'd prefer to get the stable version. Any idea how long they think it will take. I've been on cm forum googling, but not getting anywhere.

Rule 1 of CM: Don't ask for ETAs.
Build #11 and above of nightlies are based on Android 2.3.3.
#12 probably seems the most stable. I'm using #13 and its fine for me although people have reported problems.
If you want pure stableness, it'd be RC1 but it is on 2.3.2

RC1 is just a nightly that was the line where they thought it was stable enough to promote. I don't think it's any more or less stable than any other nightly.

i know that its a nightly but its also the one that brought new features that the previous nightlies didnt have such as the new lock screen.
RC2 coming tonight.
I had a lot of problems with CM7, but I was running Honity, as well. My experience was one of instability. I switched over to Axura and like it a lot.

I tried Axura last night and didn't like it at all. Also tried cm7 nightly 14 and I wasn't keen on it either. So far I haven't seen anything I like better than masters deodexed 2.3.3, so I'm back on that.

Just out of curiousity, what didn't you like about Axura?
On a more related note, as a flashaholic I've flashed every ROM available for the Nexus S and CM7 is the one I use as my Daily Driver. I'm on RC2 and can't remember the last time I had a random reboot. The other ROMs I have NANDroids of to be able to go between are Stock 2.3.3, Axura, and MIUI (I'm waiting for it to become a little more fleshed out before I really give it a go as a daily driver).

I thought Axura was nice and quick. The thing that made me remove it was the font believe it or not. It looks good in the menus but it was bad for reading emails and other small text.

Did you try flashing a different font or using font changer for root on the market? If that was really your only complaint you can very easily change such things.

I didn't know about either of the options you mentioned and I might just try them. I have no idea where you get fonts to flash, or what format they need to be in, and do you flash them the same way you flash everything else??

Sonny has a few on his theme thread over in that section and yes its just like flashing s theme or a kernel except you do it last. Just give font changer a shot it's free

What would be the best rom?

Which rom should I flash to my nexus? CM7 or is there a better one? I'm all about speed and flexibility.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Honestly there is no "best" rom. Some like cm7 the best, some like stock the best, some like rom xxx or yyy the best.
You will get 100 different answers if you ask 100 people. The best rom is the one that works best for YOU. Honestly what I would do is (assuming you already flashed cwm recovery) back a backup of your current setup, flash a different rom and try it out. Don't like it? Restore your backup. Try different rom/kernel combinations and see what works best for you and your phone. There is no "best" overall, just whats best for you.
Yea its best to experiment with all of the different roms and kernels then find what you like best.

I'm using Miui 1.7.1/netarchy 1.3.4 cfs and its very snappy.
I'm using MIUI 1.7.1 also but I have Netarchy 1.3.6 on mine overclocked to 1.2gh and my phone is very fast with good battery life.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
there is no best rom, its all about preference. with many roms to flash, you could try and see what works for you. to me, i got hooked on miui 1.7.1 and netarchy kernel.
the beauty about NS is you will find many roms for it, have fun with it
A good indicator is to see: "Nexus S Android Development" forum,
there are the officiale rom thread, you can see the most popular rom there (number of posts per thread).
It's not an answer but an indicator of the popularity.
Thanks to all of you for your input. Looks like i'll try Miui with the netrachy kernal. Let y'all know how it goes.

[Q] BEST ICS ROM FOR NEXUS S(i9020/i9023)

Hello ,
I have a Nexus S i 9023 and i have installed many different ROMs but I don't know which is the best . Please inform me about your opinion.
I am talking about ICS Roms and you can also post benchmarks to help me deside.
Now istalling GummyNex 0.7.7 I Will tell you what I think of it. Achter installimg of course. But it should have a lot of tweaks hand stuff!!

CyberGRv7 ICS Rom is MINT!!
I'd say CyberGR's v7 as well, have it on my own nexus, works like a charm
15½ hours on battery , still 74% battery left.
I'm agree. I use CyberGR V7. It's a great ROM. I've tested some another, but I have great battery/perf/functions with CyberGR.
I really like CyberGR v7. Has been pretty stable (I have not experienced any reboots or FCs), really fast and good battery life.

Have you upgraded to Apex 1.0.2 yet? I tried, but after flashing my wifi worked great but 3G would not connect.
It's hard to say "this ROM is best!" for anyone, it depends what your looking for in a ROM. If battery life is your main concern, I'd second CyberGR v7.
Performance? Personally I like Codename Android with matr1x kernel (mainly because of 1.46Ghz OC.)
Bugless petes for best of everything!

I'd give my vote to CyanogenMod 9 (v3.4 atm). Get it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399035. I used to use MIUI but switched to CM when ICS came out and have still not found a reason to search any further.
I've gone from CyberGR v7 to Oodie's MIUI and now on nuhetri v2.3.0.
I think MIUI is still a bit laggy, but it's coming through fast.
Nuhetri is working pretty good for me. A would still need to check battery life on it, but it's pretty fast!
Nuhetri or cna v1.4.0 ! I have cna atm with air kernel 3.3 overclocked to 1400mhz. soooo smooth! And batterylife is pretty good

The best rom so far is cybergr with air kernel. Great battery and no lag

Hard to say which ROM is the best because they all have their pluses and minuses. Same can be said for kernels; each kernel will perform differently according to which ROM you choose. I'd suggest reading through the ROM ops and selecting the one you like based on features and theme. Once you've found a ROM you like, flash several different kernels to find one that is most compatible (also doesn't hurt to read kernel ops as well for feature details). This process, although a little more time consuming, will likely give you better results than relying on the objective opinion of others. Also, bedalas compiled some awesome reference guides on on room and kernel performance that's a must read for anyone looking to get the most out of their device.

Oxygen 2.3.2 is the most stable ROM I've ever used. I moved to CM9 kang a lil time ago but even that isn't as stable.

Add another vote for Oxygen. Blandroid and Bugless Beast are also stock with a little more out of the box.
I'm usually partial to Peter Alfonso's ROMs, though I'm trying out CM9 at the moment.
You can dowload the 12-17 GB ROM here. I ran it for a long time and really liked it. Not a lot of bells and whistles, but VERY stable.
EDIT: Since you're on the 4G, and I don't know which would be best to flash, I'd just go to his download site and grab the latest. I'd imagine the 4G version is just as good as the 3G one.
Oxygen 2.3.2!

Well, first of all....YOU! Welcome Back, my friend! I sure do hope that hand has healed up nicely with no future problems for you.
So, what do we want for Christmas, eh? I'm probably an easy one but I'm going to say it anyway. I would LOVE to see you resurrect Wildchild ICE into AOKP Wildchild Ice Cream & Jelly Sandwich with possibly another seldom seen launcher installed like perhaps the one for the LG. I HAVE seen that one and it's VERY nice, IMHO.
Oh yeah, and WELCOME BACK!!!:good:

We-we-we-welcome breaker. I mean... Welcome back!
Any ROM which has awesome battery life and smooth performance is fine by me. Thank you.
I know I'll get flamed for this but the latest Sense that works with JB...
I have been enjoying Virtuous on ICS lately and it's time for a change.

I wouldn't mind a JB Sense rom, but we'd need a kernel just as good as our AOSP one to match
Maybe you could revive your CM/AOKP hybrid, it was one of my favorite ICS roms
I'd love to see a JB version of WiFi calling.
Oh, a Sense4+ JB ROM would be the *&*^! :fingers-crossed:
Maybe I'm the oddball, but I'd like to see an extremely stable AOSP ROM for Gingerbread. Since the source code has been released, I think that would be a relatively easy ROM to make. I'm still seeing some issues with the ICS and JB ROMs I'm running. I have a tendency of running an ICS/JB ROM for a while, then switching back to GB because of it's stability.
I wanna see Paranoid Android 3+ compiled for our device.
Sent from my myTouch_4G_Slide using Tapatalk 2
maybe I'll go for paranoid first because that will be the easiest (not necessarily easy, but easiest lol). Then I'll re-tackle WildJelly that was never released from it not being done. WildJelly is basically a Jellybean version of WildchildIcE :fingers-crossed:

Just curious, why do you want a 3.4 kernel in particular?
I just love the sense based Roms specially because of the amazing camera app, it takes wonderful shots; but I didn't find a stable one with satisfactory battery life time uptill now!
I changed the stock gingerbread rom just because it didn't support Arabic I tried all the patches but they never worked.
Anyway, my dream rom for that phone would be a stable sense based JB or Kitkat rom that don't drain the battery in 3 hours ; )
