Ok I've looked for the answer for this question all over xda with no success... I'm trying to flash a rom, but with all these acronyms and this stuff about mounting and unmounting I'm feeling like an idiot. Can anyone help me understand these mounting issues and flashing a rom finally! I need a super noob guide to do so. Thanks!

Just search for bible in the development section. I would post a link, but I'm on the road all day. There are tons of threads all over xda that answer your questions. If no one else links it or you can't find it, I will post once I'm home.

My husband has a Samsung Vibrant 3G, I rooted it and installed MIUI-NB_1.12.2_signed a few days ago and he really likes it. He just bought a used Samsung Vibrant 4G with the FFC on Craigslist today. Our question is if I make a ROM Manager backup of the current ROM on the 3G, can I install it on the 4G or is the hardware so different that it is impossible? Thanks for any feedback !!
Vibrant ain't sgs4g. Vibrant roms (nitpickers) brick sgs4g, ROM manager shouldn't allow flash work on sgs4g... ROM manager issue with sgs4g too.
Treat both phones/roms separately...

Thanks !!
ok, off I go to root and install a fresh copy THANKS !!
Good luck with that no miui here...

You did the right thing by asking first. If you need more help just go ahead and ask in this thread, plenty of people willing to help others who ask the right questions.
OK, we have decided to leave the OS virgin for now, no root and no custom ROM Maybe later we'll root at least. Thanks for the feedback and keep up the GREAT WORK !!

So I know for future reference, what is the easiest and best application to root the 4G? I have quite a few downloaded when I rooted my husband's Vibrant 3G, such as SuperOneClick and Galaxy S One Click Root All Models. Which one do you recommend?
Depends if your on froyo or GB
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
It's Froyo 2.2.1 It's probably a much better thing than being on Gingerbread to root, right? It's a PAIN in the badonkadonk to downgrade via ADB, been there done that twice with the MyTouch 4G's Successfully too, it was a huge learning curve though LOL
Eh it's the same really.just the method differ. For froyo you can find super one click 1.9 and use the PS nueter (sp?) Option just like you did with the vibrant.
are you planning on cwm recovery?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
yes, I know CWM pretty well since I started rooting MyTouch 4G's a couple of months ago, I find it easy to use and never had any problems on those particular phones. But then, the MyTouch 4G's are HTC phones, this is a Samsung and a completely different kind of breed If you have anything better and safer for rooting the Samsung Galaxy S 4G's, I'm all ears
You could hit the GB upgrade, root, and cwm all in one flash with my one click guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422824

Tell him it's ok that his phone isn't as good as yours/ours. Just once for me
If you decide on updating, 2.3.6 version is really smooth. There's a few ROMs around, just read up and follow any/all directions.

Seriously dude you need to chill, or you can politely ask a mod to move it to q&a. This rudeness is not constructive nor is it helpful to anyone.

Google for the keywords (clockwork mod. stock rom. custom rom. cm7 rom. miui rom.)
read all the stickies you can find in captivate forum
read> learn> do
read>learn> do
If you got it rooted your part of the way there...
the best advice given was read> learn> do>
cant stress that enough.
Fortunately the Cappy is hard to totally brick, but...
Read Read. That all I have done. I have learn sooo much!! Soon much more to learn.!!!

You never learn enough to say you know too much.
The man that says, "I have nothing else to learn" has not learned anything.

read the stickies.
if you dont know what stickies are... read the new user guide.

I'd guess that going to cyanogenmod.com could answer the CM9 availability question.
Maybe http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/cm9-progress-update .
Thank you. But didn't answer my question.. I do suppose I could search more deeply and find the answer fairly simple but I'm on a mobile device only and its alot easier to ask on this community forum for me, being that is the purpose of a forum..

Check the development section of the forum and see what roms are there....this is a development forum...not a Rom forum, search and read usually helps. Opening everyday a thread instead doesn't.

Will flashing the unlocked bootloader ruin the phone if I try to Odin back to stock ? Maybe a dumb question but as I don't have ten posts yet I can't ask in the regular thread. Sorry:/

Yes it does belong in Q&A, but I mean themes is better than putting it in development. Don't be an ass/troll to the new guy. If you can't answer his question or at least attempt, you don't have to reply. The mods can handle the misplaced posts (even though they probably tire of it).

That's my bad I did mean to put it in the q and a. Mods can remove. I think you just need to flash the boot.IMG and the normal stock in Odin. Ha

AFAIK using Odin to go back to stock returns everything back to stock including bootloader. Or at least that's what I've read

I thought that the OP was posting in this section because he was unable to access the appropriate section. Thus, my comment.
I apologize if it came off as a **** comment. I was just encouraging productive posting. I really dotn know the answer, either lol.

Yeah i agree. This is the best community ive seen ever since joining xda in the TyTn II days. Lets keep it nice and friendly.
As for the OP im not quite sure about unlocking the bootloader as it is very new. I like to atleast wait a few days after thigs come out to be safe before flashing
