Please give me inputs and thoughts as to which kernal and rom combo would get me the biggest improvments I'm really looking to be wowed as much as i was when i upgraded from my G2 to the amazing G2x now i want more. Sorry for all the run on and this not being short.
Please leave personal information/reviews of your suggestions if you can. i know there will be a few different options and I've been loading the roms and setting everything up and backing up and trying new ones that way i can "Hot Swap" Rom if i want to change on the fly.

The first i have ever tried was the CM7 Nightly Build124 and had running with Faux123v0.4.1 Kernel. Great ROM and wicked fast and ok battery life. Then i moved onto Weapon G2X v2.5 but noticed it wasn't quite as fast as CM7 so i decided i wanted to try a different ROM but with a CM7 base. So i tried Eagleblood 1.9. Fast but wasn't stable and battery life sucked. Then i thought i'd give MIUI a try. After first boot up, i really wasn't feeling the whole iPhone feel...but as i got to play around with the different themes ande theme edits, i thought to myself: this is it. It's the perfect blend of iPhone functionality and simplicity along with Android endless customizations and amazing speed. Now my G2X feels like the best phone out there.
But it's really a personal preference. It's your phone and you want it enjoy it the way you want to.
Oh and its always good to have other ROMS and kernels as backup on your SD card.
yea id definately like to stay away from iphone anything, i really like android , bought my first android when the g1 first came to tmob, and been a fan ever since (tried windows mob 6 and despised how laggy it was) , ive played with iphones and do not like the lay out, i love the simplicity and customization of android roms and all, so id like to stick to something similar just looking for different internals to increase performance and battery life, all the features are fine pretty much , i wish it was as easy as computers just upgrading the ram inside the phone but i highly doubt we can upgrade from 512 mb of ram to 1 gb or more but can miui be swapped away from the iphone look/feel? i tried running cm7 with faux kernal but everytime i attempt to load the kernal zip from rebooting into recovery and loading zip from sd card, i get tossed into a boot loop (lg boot image, then switches to lg boot image with a blue and black loading bar, just keeps swapping back and forth between the two) so i end up recoverying to either my gb stable or a cm7 with stock kernal .
Yes ofcourse. With MIUI you can always run a different Launcher...like Go Launcher Pro or ADW. But the MIUI launcher is what sets it apart from all others...its very easy to customize. Here's the MIUI themes thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183979
Oh and to avoid bootloop...whenever you flash a new kernel always wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache. sometimes it helps if you fix permissions as well.

The best performance and battery life combo I've experienced so far is CM7 with faux's kernel.
I've tried various different roms so far and my experience has been that anything based on stock LGE roms (such as EB and Weapon), although a big improvement over stock, is still plagued with incompatibilities and instability.
For example gtalk video doesn't work on anything based on stock, and netflix still doesn't work despite the most recent update providing compatibility with all froyo and gingerbread devices. Also because of LG's buggy bluetooth stack, you cant use wii or sixaxis controllers... pretty sillly on a fast phone capable of emulating N64 and PSX without lag and supports HDMI out.
That said CM7 is the best bet as long as you don't mind not being able to use a2dp... as far as I'm concerned its a small price to pay for all the extra functionality, battery life and speed CM7 brings to my phone.
I've also tried some CM7 based roms, but have never seen a big enough improvement to stray away from official CM7 or a kang such as fitsnugly's.
Right now I am using fitsnugly's kang.
As far as kernels go, I've experienced at least a 30% increase in battery life on faux's CM7 kernel maybe more. He has two versions, I recommend the one with the CM battery driver because the DS driver will make you want to pull your hair out.
Also I would recommend getting the July 15th baseband via the lg updater tool. It improves battery life and makes GPS lock instantly.
based on your last post of you bringing up that lge buggy blue tooth driver, i just purchased a new headset, Jawbone Icon, it syncs and connects with my phone just fine but when i attempt to make calls or answer calls no audio can be heard by bluetooth device, and unknown if my speech is heard on the other end. is this a conflict related to the bluetooth stack provided by lge

Yur welcome. As far as the fastest kernel, Trinity15 is quite fast too but i always seemed to prefer Faux for some reasons.
so i wiped the davlic and cache, reinstalled the cm7 rom , it loaded right, restarted a second time and went back into recovery , and attempted to load the faux kernal i have loaded on my sd card, i again cleared dalvick and cache, and ran fix permissions, it appears it was going to do boot loop after i restarted but instead got to the s/w ugrading screen, but it sat there for approximately 5 minutes before i decided to restore back to previous settings
Weren't you already running CM7?
Did you flash a newer nightly or something?
Also, make sure the faux kernel you downloaded was the right one. One is intended for CM7 and one is for stock GB, they have separate threads.
If you are sure you flashed the one intended for CM7 and it was the undervolted one, try the standard voltage.
Also based on your post I'm not sure what order you did things in but after wiping cache and dalvik, flash the kernel then fix permissions.

So on the 10th I bought my first Android phone. I picked up a Nexus S, because I like things pure and untouched as far as the OS goes, I didn't want to be required to use a custom rom in order to remove HTC Sense, Motoblur, TouchWiz or whatever.
I also like the fact that the update process is much quicker on Google Nexus phones then on the other branded phones. I have no issues with the base Android 2.3 and Im really getting use to it. But I am curious about some of the issues I have read about with the Nexus S and custom kernels. I am going to root my phone. I did find the how-to on that.
Now I am curious about the custom kernels. I do have linux experience on the back end with some of my workstations I use. But I was thinking about if I could go the route of doing these things without needing to completely reflash a custom kernel.
I would like to switch my phone completely to EXT4 and yes I even mean the 16GB internal for the speed boost and performance. I would like to install a better kernel that allows for the VooDoo Audio (I have noticed a few of the audio issues with my phone) and also the BrainFuckScheduler option as well. Could someone please help point me in the right direction for these or maybe with some how-tos.
As far as mounting my phone's internal SD for storage. I can use it on my linux box for EXT4 support if i need to copy files over. but I am using wireless sync for my music and movies so that shouldn't be a major issue.
You could flash netarchy's kernel in the dev section. It essentially has all that you're asking for: BFS, voodoo sound, and ext4 hack. It comes clocked at stock speed unless you choose to overclock it.

So what would be the best recommended option, as far as battery and performance goes is the stock ROM great or would a custom ROM really fair me much better performance and battery power.
When I mean stock I mean the stock ROM with the custom kernal with extra additions like ext4.
by the way that ext4 will change all mount points over to ext4 correct? requiring a wipe of the phone and start from stratch

I'd be interested in hearing everyones opinion as well.
So far, I've installed CM7 (now on RC1) and Netarchy's 1.2.3 CFS kernel. I just installed the kernel from Team Whiskey today and can't tell if it's either faster or better with battery. Would be interested in hearing what the community has to say about that. One difference is that the Team Whiskey kernel can OC up to 1.6 if your phone can handle it.
CM7 does seem to do better than the stock kernel, but I dont' think any of the custom launchers beat the stock launchers in terms of buttery smooth app drawer. I think it's because the stock one is hw accelerated but none of the other launchers are.
Installing the ext4 mod will not wipe your phone. There's a forum in the development section with the mods that you need. You will have to root your phone though (there's also a way to do that without wiping your phone, check the forum).
Hope that helps, and I hope other people weigh in on the kernel question.

I installed the Trinity Stock kernel which has Voodoo Audio, BFS, and says EXT4 with no overclocking.
I ran a quadrant and my highest scores after 3 runs in a row where:
Stock Kernel: 1660
Trinity Kernel: 1675
Im not sure if there really is a major performance improvement or not or am I missing something here. The audio does sound better and the analog control of the headphone amp is amazing.

I get 2100+ with CM7 + Netarchy 1.2.3 CFS; also, benchmarking doesn't really mean much. it doesn't record the performance on a daily basis.
I highly recommend trying out CM7; you could perform a nandroid backup; wipe dalvik/cache/factory and then flash CM7 and gapps. Don't like it? (I seriously doubt it; you wont be disappointed) then just nandroid restore and you're back to where you were before
P.S. I'm not responsible if you get addicted to flashing ROMs

How is CM7 so much better than the stock ROM as far as increasing the performance? And is there a good how-to to get it flashed to the most recent build and also to return to stock if I'm not happy
I tried the Netarchy kernel and its benching at 2425 on the stock 2.3.2 ROM, and it boots so much faster and feels overall snappier after a bit of use. LOVE THIS!!!
So I got things figured out still working on customization a bit, figured I would try out some launchers and things, right now Im using LauncherPro.
But my main questions now are how do yall encode video for your phones? I have tried a few settings on HandBrake and they seem to crash doubletwist and not play in the default media player. So if someone could help me with the settings yall use, perfer not to get another application cause I use Handbrake for other encoding needs as well.
Does anyone know of any widgets that will show me the cell strength and my data connection type (wifi, 3g, edge) so that I can move those to my home screen and not be required to have the notification bar.

Video Player: I recommend RockPlayer, you don't have to encode anything. it plays it natively with the exception of 720p (sadly.. 720p, it lags.. but everything else is fine).
After flashing this ROM, my connectivity issues are gone! Very nice ROM!

you would probably get more responses if you go to the actual thread. Im running it, and its ok, just having some problems with wifi not wanting to connect again even though the password is already set up. have to manually connect it.

my tmo G2x is rooted, and rom manager installed, updated, and recovery flashed.
After using Rom manger to boot into recovery mode,
what physical buttons do i press to 'select' the flash update.zip?
I'm able to scroll up and down through the selections, but i cant choose one of the 4 options..
Any help appreciated.

The primary reason for the majority of the improvements in EB is because it's a gingerbread ROM. That's not to say that the devs of EB didn't do a terrific job tweaking things and improving performance (in both versions).
Froyo is not optimized for dual core CPUs (in fact, it doesn't look like it supports them really at all... kind of like say Windows XP had memory/CPU limitations, etc...)
If you're running the Froyo build, try the GB build - you'll notice even more improvements because of the OS bump.

But then again what do you prefer speed vs stability?? Gb is fast but still a bit buggy where as froyo might be a bit slower but very stable (battery, apn, a2dp) not to mention if you flash faux123 kernel on it froyo will break the sound barrier, so until official gb is released for g2x froyo + faux kernel is stable and fast.

Been running Eagles Blood since a couple of days and I have to say it's the best so far I have tried. Battery life is good (not exceptional though), performance is excellent and so far I have had no issues (random freezes/reboots or audio not working etc.)!
In short, I am not switching to any other ROM till we have custom ROMs based on the official release of 2.3!

EB 2.5 issues
I have always had issues with EB for some reason. I have used 2.4 before and now tried 2.5. I get random freezes and reboots. Yday I had the sleep of death and I realized this when my alarm didnt go off in the morning. I have been using Kang_Clam 2.3.7 ROM since then and LOVE it. Recommend it to people who have issues with EB. Appreciate the work of all developers for their time. Thread is here:

That's your problem, never use ROM manager, instead turn your phone off then after it's of f hold volume down key and power at the same time, after you see the blue lg logo let go and you'll be in cwm and wipe then install from sd card

This rom is the one I always go back to. It never gives me any issues and everything just works.

Maybe it's just me but MMS didn't work on any version over 2.3.3 and I had battery life issues.
Most stable is definitely weapon 2.8 with stock kernel.
All is fine for me. Except sometimes trouble with MMS over wifi but other than that...
Trying Ultimate to get the camera back to basics. Loading it now - is there a kernel you suggest for this, or no?
You don't have to use Ultimate to get your cam back to basics. He offers a separate link for anyone who wants it. Though...can't say if it plays nice with the other roms or not. I've still yet to flash any roms.
Weapon 2.8 with faux's oc/uv kernel has been the best, smoothest, least problematic rom/kernel combo I could find.
Everything works, it's super-smooth, super-stable, and it looks great.
No wifi issues, no weirdness, and fantastic battery life, even while [email protected]
The one-and-only down side is that it has a longer than normal boot time, as the kernel rebuilds the dalvik cache on every boot.
Yeah i agree, got my g2x for about nearly half a year now, the best rom ive ever used is weapon 2.8 with sv kernel faux. No bugs, data works fine, no freezes, heat ups, or battery pulls. Battery is great, from morning til comming home at 3am with 33% still.
But if you love personalizing then get miui, although ii never figured what kernel works for miui though

In your opinion, what is the most STABLE Rom, and what would you consider to be the best?
I have been using Weapon G2X and Its my favorite so far, as far as features go, but Its crazy buggy, Random reboots 10 times a day atleast! So I want something a little more stable. (unless someone knows a fix to the random reboots)
Also, Whats the best way to backup your texts, settings, and app data and settings before you flash a new rom? Also keep in mind I just switched from an iphone to the G2X a few weeks ago, so i am pretty new to the android scene in general.
My backup pro is a great program to save bookmarks, text messages, applications etc, so is titanium backup pro. I will say latest cm nightlies with faux. 4.7. Kernel is a very smooth/stable experience, also just flashed eaglesblood 2.5 two days ago and its also an excellent rom especially with fauxs latest kernel.

In my opinion Eaglesblood 2.4 was the most stable rom i have used on my G2X. There were absolutely no issues; everything ran 100%. But because it was updated im going to go ahead and say that you should use Eaglesblood 2.5.

for me is miui with this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1073626 is pretty good no ramdom boot ups
Im using weapon and I also had reboot issues until I went with fauxs UV/OC kernel .0.1.3 and set the minimum frequency to 500 using pimp my cpu.
And for backups I always just make a backup in cwm right before flashing and afterwards do an advanced restore, data only. On top of restoring data it sets your phone back up exactly how you had it. And I've had problems with some backup apps losing my data at random.

Weapon's been great for me so I'm not sure, maybe every phone reacts differently. I did have a bluetooth issue on 2.8 so I downgraded to 2.7 and it's been working.
Definitely Eaglesblood.....Fastest and the best rom I have ever used!!!!!
I'd say the latest Cyanogenmod nightly, with either a Trinity(morfic) or faux123 kernel.
faux123's Debauchedsloths battery driver kernel *amazing battery life, but bad battery percentage readings.
Found morfics kernels to be slightly better, although fauxs work is fantastic!

Ive installed eaglesblood and so far I am liking it.
The only problem I have run into so far, is that everyone I talk to on the phone (daily) has commented how quiet I sound sense flashing. Never had this problem before, any suggestions?
I have NO issues at all with the latest CM Nightly running faux's 0.4.7 sv. Unfortunately my device won't allow the OC/UV kernel as it never boots after flashing it. I would love to run the DS version but I think I'd have a real hard time with the funky battery readings. Does this happen to everyone who uses it or is it just hit and miss? Any way to fix it?

I've been using Weapon for a week and a half now and it runs smoothly, never crashes on me, never have to pull battery, and I did realize that battery was better than the previous roms.
Now I want to know if I should use any other custom kernel(overclocked or not)? The roms runs great, except I noticed that it lags a bit here and there, but not too much. Like when i'm downloading an app, the screen will be still for like 1 milisecond when it's installing. That's probably the trade off for the decent battery life, but I'm not sure.
So what kernel are you guys using with Weapon? Let me know, I've been thinking about using Faux kernel, overclock it to about 1100 with SetCPU. But im worried it'll have a major impact on battery life.

That lag when installing apps is an Android problem, not ROM. I believe Google fixed that in ICS. If it ain't broke no need to fix it is what I believe, so I say just stick with what kernel you already have.
But if you really wanna try something new then try the Dragon Kernel that was repacked by Mr.Apocalypse. Or you can try Faux's. But make sure you try the one that's for the 2.3.3 GB OTA by Faux, not the CM7 version.
Stay with stock kernel. Since no drivers for the kernel were ever released, technically stock is the best aside from the tweaks, but then it becomes a sort of ported kernel.

Stock kernel is good, I think that's the reason my battery life was great. But I'm gonna stay with Dragon and see how things go.

You will get best battery life/stability on your stock weapon kernel. If you want to oc go with faux but prepare for noticible bad battery life.

Wise choice. Weapon is a great rom. Back it up and try "new clip". Follow the instructions and give it time to settle. There is a new updated weapon rom coming soon. In new clip you will get fast GPS locks. Fast/quick interface. Very nice. The one quibble is clock placement.

I ran weapon r1 and new clip and you are right both are the bees knees. The gps fix in new clip was an unreal change in fix time as well! Good luck with the weapon!

I have always used weapons and Faux is the way to go. I use setcpu and I run my processor at 1.552 when the screens on and. 389 when its off and I get over 15 hours per charge with moderate use. Just customize the profiles in setcpu to your liking.

What exactly is this "New click"? Is it a new weapon mod?
Anyways I have been using weapon r1 3.0 for about a week now, everything is stable and smooth, however gps isnt exactly the fastest, often it doesnt even lock indoor (which, my old phone does). Takes roughly 15s-1m to get a lock outdoor too. I personally think that is slow.
Other than the gps, i am fairly satisfied with the WeaponG2x_30_R1_1022.

Sorry for the typo. It is "New Clip". New Clip is new revision by Kwes1020. He has taken ownership of the rom now that the original dev no longer has a G2x. GPS is much improved and the entire interface has been tweaked for a smoother faster response. It is flashed over Weapon from CWM. It retains all your settings, apps etc. It is a worthy upgrade. Soon there will be an all new version of Weapon, but for now it is the best solution.Try it, you will like it.
Yep... I've tried about 3 or 4 roms before I came up weapon.... This is definitely the most stable by far. Have no issues with it in about 3 weeks now. Also don't suffer from the SoD anymore either.
Tried CM7 Stable looked nice but had SOD issues on lock
then i used root explorer to flush out the bloat ware and ran that for a few hours and backed it up and installed
weapon_r, only problem seemed to be if i rebooted i had to re install from backup need for speed and the nova demo. or they would crash boot on start. but
just flashed new clip and after reboot no lockup on need for speed or nova!
love this rom.....everything works and lots of options. nice and fast (maybe too fast) i was used to a ginger lol optimums t that i gave to my mom after disablement of data(she can use wi fi) i'm not paying for a data line for her.

How do I go back to weapon's kernel without flashing the whole rom again?

Boot into CWM
Flash Weapon
Flash New Clip (optional)
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Reboot
All settings should be retained. I remember reading somewhere that when you change kernels, you should go into application management and clear data and cache from SetCPU or some of the old settings will be used. Not sure if that's true or not. And actually, maybe that was the original problem for you on faux's kernel. *shrug*
I didn't have SetCPU prior to faux kernel... I wanted to try overclocking and my phone would randomly shut off. So I just left the values at default and it still did it.
Bumping since I have another question.
Every now and then on the home screen, when i try to slide to the next screen, the screen will pan out and show all of my home screens instead. I'm not sure how to change it back without rebooting.
Anyone know what I might have did?

If your using go launcher you can set the swipe up and swipe down on your homescreen to do stuff I disable it cause its annoying.
Edit: On your homescreen (assuming you have go launcher) > preferences > gestures > glide up > select the option 'disable'
Make sure you do the same thing with "glide down" option.
Pin it to Win it.
