[Q] Need help rooting the Sensation 4G - HTC Sensation

Hey guys this is my first Android device. I've read on a bunch of rooting and the reason I'm looking into it is because I'm sick of HTC Sense. I just have a few question about rooting because all the threads I've read are from before HTC started unlocking the bootloaders. I was just wondering what the safest way to root is, whether or not I should unlock the bootloader (would this help the rooting process), will the bootloader change anything about rooting, how to flash a custom ROM onto the device and what are the chances of me messing something up and ruining my phone? Any help is appreciated but please try to keep it as simple as possible. Thanks!
I'll put all this in, in case you need it:
Android Version: 2.3.4
Sense Version: 3.0
Software Number: 1.45.531.1

Im pretty sure you have to s-off to root the easiest way is to use revolutionary and just flash a rooted Rom which I think all should be rooted its really easy just go to the thread under development it's stickied
If you follow the dirrection like it says you should have no problem just read them beforehand and use then while you do it
Sent from my Sensation using XDA Premium App

if youre sick of sense, just install CM7 or an ASOP/CM7 blend, it has 0 sense on it, and come rooted

I would also reccommend revolutionary because htc's official unlock is a bit dodgy in terms of what it realy unlocks. You wont get the ability to flash custom kernels (correct me if im wrong) meaning no CM (one of the best no sense roms). Theres a thread in sensation development which is really easy to follow and if you have any questions just ask!

its alright, but im a sense man myself
the beauty of this phone is all of the ports that we are going to get, a CM7 MIUI is enroute, and sense 3.5 alpha just dropped thanks RCmix team

I haven't unlocked my bootloader yet because I'm still trying to read everything I can before I get into this

oh, thats good news...PLEASE USE REVO! it wont void your warranty, and its much more reliable in terms of ease of use and functionality

custom rom, root, ... general questions

right now i got a branded sensation. so far im quite satisfied with it. the only thing is, i would be glad to get root f.e. to get to the database file for the sense weather to add new locations.
for me i dont really need any custom rom by now. its my first android device and as said i like sense so far.
as i read through here, i think the problem for now is to get root on the device. if this would be possible, flashing new roms would be possible right?
so my question is:
is it more problematic to get root or to get a new rom? if htc will open the bootloader, will it be possible to get sense with root automaticlly? or is it still needed to find a way to get root in htc roms?
in custiom roms there should be no problem to get root right?
sorry if this all sounds lame or something but as said, this is my first android device. it try to read as much as i can
thx in advance for any answer!

i dont wann know how to do such things as by now it isnt possible. i just want to know if there will be unlocked bootloader, is it automaticly possible to get a root enabled stock rom?

No. Unlocked bootloader will not automatically mean you'll get root. It's only a way for us to get root by another software running in the backround..
HTC already confirmed an unlocked bootloader in the near future..
For an offtopic discussion, custom roms will allways be better as they have no bloatware and includes tweaks to lots of stuff like ram management, oc kernels, gfx patches, deodexed and so on...
I hope this answered your question and please try to be nice on the forums.. people tend to reply nicer that way...

READ MY POST: I KONW IT ISNT POSSIBLE NOW AND I DONT ASK FOR A METHODE TO DO ANYTHING LIKE ROOT OR CUSTOM ROM!
so isnt there a way to modify android and/or sense to get root on the stock fw? thought both are open source.
for sure this still requieres an open bootloader and maybe someone would say even this would be a custom rom

Android really isnt fully Open Source, HTC Sense and their phones aint Open Source.. Even if it is running Android in the bottom, HTC owns Sense UI.
The bootloader is pretty much locking you untill it gets hacked or HTC releases its opened one..
You labeled the topic GENERAL questions, but didn't see fit to place it in the GENERAL or Q&A forum?
This is in no way development related.

[Q] Is it possible to install MIUI on official 2.3.5 (Sense 3.5) update?

Hello,
first of all, sorry for being a noob, I hope this question wasn't asked anywhere else (I checked but couldn't find anything about it)
I bought the DS about 4 Months ago and really, I love it. Still, I would like to tweak it a little bit and give MIUI a try! BUT I'm reaaaally afraid of screwing my phone up! (I had a HTC Magic which I rooted and flashed several times but here it seems to be a totally different operation).
Here are my questions:
1) Is MIUI installable on UPDATED (Android 2.3.5 and Sense 3.5) HTC Desire S with OFFICIAL HTC OTA update yet?
2) Is it possible to backup my files and fallback to my old settings easily?
3) Is the battery life convincing on MIUI? (I feel great with 2 days of middle-intensity use.)
4) Could someone guide me through every different steps? There are so much links everywhere I dunno where to look and I'm afraid to miss important things etc. etc. This would really be so much appreciated and after that I could do a toppic (if needed) with every information concentrated for noobs like me ;-)
Thanks in advance!
Thomas
PS: sorry for my english!
1.MIUI is completely different rom and u can install whatever Sense rom u have.
2.yes.Use nandroid backup or Titanium backup for apps
3.battery life is good on miui.
4.for this one u need to use search.i'll just give u this link to start http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146601
Thanks a lot for that fast answer, iI'll take a look at that and come back if there are things I'm hesitating about!
Little question: I know it's a different rom, I meant, is it possible to S-Off and root Updated HTC Desire S and then Flahs MIUI yet? Considering it's been updated the official way ^^
EDIT:
Okay so, if I get it right: I need
1) to S-Off (if my updated device doesn't fit the conditions it should be refused on revolutionary website)
2) to ROOT (Gingerbreak or Superoneclick APKs)
3) Do I need to install a custom recovery? for example ClockWorkMod? (it's written in OUTDATED on the tutorial, is it a problem?)
4) Then I should be able to flash MIUI
Right?
Thanks a lot
Yep, you've got it
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
Thanks a lot!
I'd like to try rooting and flashing today but on Revolutionary page they say we need HTC Drivers for fastboot: they provide a download link which is dead, do you know where I can find them? To be sure not to download the wrong files?
EDIT: Files are back on, sorry!
Updated HTC Desire S is HBOOT 2.00.0002 which isn't supported by revolutionnary :-( can't root for now...
Then you need to downgrade first.
Sent from my Desire S using XDA App
Oh I think i'm starting to get it hehe
Is downgrading a simple operation or is it difficult? Shouldn't I wait for revolutionary to support my HBOOT? Will it take long? Sorry for being a noob but I really wanna do things well.
Thanks a lot for your answers!
its simple but please search and read all instructions.it takes 10 sec
Roger that !
Thanks a lot for your help !
I'm pretty sure that htcdev.com will be able to s-off your device. It's not listed in the official devices, but many people reported its working. It seems much easier, as you won't need to downgrade.

Then, have a quick look at the links at the bottom of this post. You might find what you need right away.
Third. Even if you do get your question answered, please, do come back and read the links in this post to educate yourself. You'll be surprised how much time and frustration it will save you in the future.
ASK ANY QUESTION HERE,adb, drivers, superCID etc...... You will either get an answer or will get pointed in the right direction.

There is no way you can FAQ everything and to keep FAQ up to date is pain in the ass. Treat this thread as a chat.
Why wouldn't you SuperCID?
I put a question in the firmware/partition thread yesterday, still no answer so I'll kick off by asking it again.
I see a lot of people getting trouble with their CID when installing firmware, and the firmware package is constantly updated with new CID's, however it seems prudent to become SuperCID anyway.
Is there a reason for not wanting SuperCID? From my understanding it's just a "label" in the phone, so it doesn't affect signal strength / how good your radio works etc. So it seems weird to want to avoid SuperCID. Am I right?
The only reason I can think of is in case of warranty returns or so. But why are so many (with a working device) trying to install firmware with their original CID then?
I hope someone understands my question.

Thanks for offering to help. I am seeing a trend here that questions are simply ignored. I am a beginner in this 'root' thing. Though I successfully rooted my previous phone HTC Desire.

Yes you are right, If you want to go back to S-on sometime (which you'll only want in case of warranty returns), you'll need official firmware/hboot. However, S-on is a dangerous process, people have bricked their devices doing it.
The official firmware from that thread can be used for other purposes as well (If you're phone works better, you can switch to stock ROM/firmware and leave it S-off), but if you're not having troubles, I see no need to do that.
Also, you can make a NANDroid backup of your phone after you have rooted/S-off/CWM, so switching to Stock ROM won't be a problem.
For now, I wholeheartedly recommend Custom ROMs with the appropriate firmware.

S-on goes wrong if you do it on rooted phone only by the looks of it. Although, any of this nodding businessis potentially dangerous, all you can do is to learn as much as you can to minimise possibility of a brick.

And usually if you use an earlier RUU it will prompt you eventually for an OTA that will get up back to where you belong.

Do you mean can you replace the launcher with something that is different/more compact?
You can always try a different desktop launcher like Go Launcher or ADW but you will lose your ability to use Sense widgets. I don't know of anyone that has modified Sense Launcher to allow folders.
I don't want other launchers - sense stock is good, but I need something other for all programs menu - actually i've found AppFolders.
I just want to remap action on left button to app folder, for example. Is it possible in sense?

It is completely possible as the EVO people have done it as so:

But I don't see that option in the mod forums for us. I would even ask tommytomatoe how to do it for the Sensation.

Cyanogen updates are like Fight Club.
Rule number 1. You don't talk about Cyanogen updates.
Rule number 2. You don't talk about Cyanogen updates.
That aside.....CM9 is being worked on. That's the only update there is. It'll get here when it gets here. (And yeah...I'm drooling with anticipation too and it drives me bonkers that I have no idea when we'll get to see it But that's the way Cyanogen rolls.)

What are the main advantages of rooting my HTC sensation?

BEFORE you do anything make sure you read, read and re-read:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
BE CAREFUL, it's easy to brick the phone if you don't read and understand, especially if you start applying Firmware updates required for ICS. A few folks have managed to get the latest firmware applied and removed S-OFF, this is a problem as the revolutionary.io method to S-OFF won't work with the later Firmware versions.
Make sure you read the guides before you start, I can't stress this enough.
S-OFF switches off the security flag. (REQUIRED IN ORDER TO DO MOST THINGS)
Custom Recovery (e.g. CWM or 4EXT) allows you to install custom ROMs and other components.
The Custom ROMs are generally smaller in size and faster that the stock HTC one. You can also install different kernels allowing you to increase the CPU speed, e.g. 1.2GHz to 1.7GHz in some cases.
Another benefit is that you can use Titanium to backup and recover components of the ROM, data and apps. Another benefit is the ability to use nandroid ackup/recovery. Nandroid is a complete phone backup whereas Titanium is at a more granular level.
Before you do any of the above, do the following:
Go to Settings>About phone>Software information and make a note of the 'Software version' - this is the MOST important thing you need to make a note of.
Once you have that number, post back here so we can advise if an RUU is available to you for warranty purposes
Custom ROMs - better than stock

As abhishek89 has succeeded installing a custom ROM I hope he doesn't mind me asking a few questions in his tread.
I'm a beginner when it comes to custom ROM's and everything that has something to do with it. But I am interested in trying it out, just afraid of bricking my device .
So I hope you don't mind offering me some information EddyOS as i've seen your advice around the forum is always helpful!
I've looked up a few numbers and was wondering if I could proceed doing some things,
Android version: 2.3.4
HTC Sense version: 3.0
Softwarenumber: 1.50.206.1
I hope you don't mind! and if you need any more information regarding my device please ask!
Thanks,
Wapstra

Thank you for writing such a quick reply!
I used an app called Cid Getter and it says that my CID is [CID is: ]: [O2___001]
I bought my phone in The Netherlands tho, so I don't know how the O2 got there, but I guess it's not a big deal ?
I've read trough most of the information about S-Off, Unlocking, Permanent Root, Clockwork etc. And I was just wondering if you could give me a ''go'' on starting all that stuff ? Sorry for asking that so many times!
So looking at my CID and Software information I can start S-Off and continue trough the rest of the tutorial ?
Android version: 2.3.4
HTC Sense version: 3.0
Softwarenumber: 1.50.206.1
CID O2___001

I have rooted two Sensations, the first via Revolutionary.io (only works up to HBOOT 1.18.0000) and the Juopunutbear on a replacement (under warranty, screen just stopped working one day nada to do with S-OFF).
The Juopunutbear method works just a bit frustrating on getting the timing right with the paper clip. Read up on it, it really does work and seems to work well.
I would thoroughly recommend getting S-OFF onto your phone, makes life sooooo much easier.

[Q] Dangers in Rooting with S-OFF

Hey everyone,
Please bear with me since this is my first post.
I want to overclock my HTC Sensation XE with stock ICS(4.0.3), software no 3.33.720.106 (to start with).
I realize that I need root to do this. I found tons of great guides here and what I want to know is: Is it better to get a custom ROM like Cyanogen Mod for this? Or should I just root and keep S-ON and get an overclocking app? I mean I would need to S-OFF to get non ICS (3.33.xxx.xxx) ROMS which renders the phone rather vulnerable. I'm in doubt because I read that Cyanogen is very good at security and offers a great deal of control over the phone.
This is my first root attempt so please excuse anything that I (might) have got wrong. I searched but if this is a repost, please redirect .
