So I tried to root my Nexus S 4G from Sprint, For no real reason, and ended up with the bootloader unlocked and no OS on it. So the only thing I can do with it is make an emergency call. I'm at a loss on what to next, I'd still like to get a custom ROM on it and run it rooted. I have another phone that I'm not going to mess with so rooting the Nexus is still on the table.
My question is what are my next steps to get the device reloaded so that is can be a rooted android device? Like I said the bootloaded is unlocked but the Android OS is blown out.
Thanks in advance for your help and I look forward to your assistance. BTW, that NOOB video is hilarious, I watched it 3 times and I think I still goofed up. MAH BAD!

If you have no "OS" as you put it, how can you make an emergency call? There is no way to make a call from Fastboot/Bootloader or Recovery so I don't know how you could make any kind of call????

OK so the phone has an OS on it; how do I continue the ROOT process so I can use it for more than emergency calls? I'm good with technology just not with this modding stuff. So I can safely say your kung-fo is better than mine.

You don't need root to make a phone call. You either don't have a SIM card in it/have the phone activated with a carrier (which I guess would be the case since it is sprint) or it is locked (asking you for a password or unlock pattern) and you don't know how to unlock it.

Link us to the exact root method you used. To me it sounds like you didn't read the directions thoroughly and used a root method that doesn't work with your model.

The phone is activated as I was using it before I blew it up. US Sprint phones do not have a SIM card so that is not an issue either. When I power it on, I bootloader is unlocked, so I know that part worked, and then I get to the screen for emergency calls only. I know I NOOBed it and I'm willing to admit it. Hell I'll even create a tee shirt to wear; I just want to know is there anything I can do at this point to fix it or even roll it back?
If pictures help I'll crank that out tonight.

If you can get into the bootloader and recovery then more than likely yes.

Before you attempt my 2 posts below tell me what rom you flashed. It could be as easy as flashing a correct rom from recovery. Otherwise you will need to follow the directions below.
Follow this unroot guide to a T start where it says How to: Return Nexus s 4G to stock.

After you do all those steps and if the phone is working correctly do as follows.
Update your phone via ota or from files on this guide. Once on stock 2.3.5 GRJ90 follow the rooting guide from the same link.

How do I tell if my phone is 100% stock? I got my Nexus S secondhand, and just wanted to be sure. My phone is on Android 2.3.6.
Thanks! Sorry for the noob question...
Does it boot with an unlocked padlock under google? If so the bootloader is unlocked. Try root checker to check for root. Compare software version with stock roms listed here.

When you power on your phone you see the Google logo. If there is a padlock symbol at the bottom of the screen then it more than likely is not stock of has been rooted in the past.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
check those things already mentioned, but chances are you are stock. 2.3.6 has been out for about a week. The update caused problems with tethering and did not fix a fairly major bug (Search bug). For those who know how to modify the phone, these issues can be overcome. Because of this, I suspect that you got sold the phone because the original owner did not want to deal with the issues
Just to make it clear, a locked bootloader (no lock icon when booting) doesn't mean the phone is stock, it just means you can't apply a new recovery until the bootloader is unlocked (again).

I wouldn't do it if I were you. Not while rooted....Can brick your phone I heard.
Do not update if u are rooted.
Well if you can't update while rooted, what are you supposed to do if it auto updates? I was just sitting in bed and noticed that my notification went off on my phone and not on my tablet (meaning not email). I checked the phone and if I hadn't noticed it would have auto updated and I am rooted on stock. It said the update would start in 3 minutes after I heard the notification. I deferred until tomorrow and have my phone how I want it, so I really don't want to go back to stock. I suppose I could make a nandroid.
It really scares me though that Verizon almost pushed an update that could have potentially bricked my phone. I don't think that is right, quite honestly.

I can confirm 100% you will have no issues with it. I look like a newbish person here as I don't come on xda much. I just thought I'd spread the love over here. I'm usually over @ Rootz.
http://rootzwiki.com/user/19244-goose306/
I don't like to pull this card, but hopefully you see I have enough reps over there to at least know what I'm talking about
That being said all its going to really do is give you a better radio and patch the no sim issue, and install more bloat (Verizon Remote Access) and dumb down your search abilities. So its about 50/50 as far as benefits. But if you don't like it you can ODIN back to previous firmware versions anyways, so it really isn't that big of a deal. The best benefit you could have would be to root it, unlock it, block the OTA, then install the new radio separately. This will get you the benefit of the new radio and patching the no sim error but without the new Verizon bloat and without the neutered search capability. Best of both worlds.
If you plan on flashing ROMs about the only thing you will be keeping from this OTA going forward will be the new radio. So it doesn't really make a lick of difference either way as the radio can be flashed separately as discussed.

no your fine...one thing this might help with is unlocking wcdma 1900 band so you can use this device on domestic gsm networks. our device current state is a insecure aboot, but there a still signature verification checks being performed before the insecure aboot.img loads. meaning our bootloader is unlocked yes, but the device is not fully unlocked..hince why it still shows "secure boot enabled" in odin mode.

Well, like you said yourself above our aboot.img is truly unlocked, but the phone isn't because of secure boot. All the other versions on other carriers are truly unlocked, but ours isn't, which is why we are unable to flash cross-carrier modems like they can on AT&T or t-mo. I just posted on the wcdma 1900 bounty thread that the dev version could be used to unlock that frequency band if the hardware is there. I truly wish we could disable secure boot, then we could basically do anything we want with this phone. We still have a partially disabled, but unlocked phone.

IIRC the warranty is automatically voided on the dev edition once custom software is loaded or 30 days is reached (whichever happens first).

But what if I am ineligible for the Edge and want to return back to root? This is telling me my bootloader will then be locked forever.

You asked how to get to 4.3 as of it were Ota'd by Verizon, that's the 4.3 update.
You can reroot but you can't unlock the bootloader, you should make sure you're eligible first before you flash that.

Ok sounds good, thank you! Another quick question though, is there even a point to re-rooting but having a locked bootloader? Or is rooting again useless after that?
