U.S Galaxy S2 over the iPhone5 and Nexus-Prime ? - General Topics

I think the Samsung Galaxy S2 looks to be an incredible smartphone, when they first released the international version back in April, it was hands down the #1 top dog best device on the market. But now 5 months later the U.S. is finally getting it, but is it too late ? I hate to pick it up, and not even a month later is outdated, significantly by both the iPhone5 and Nexus-Prime. I am on Sprint and looking for a new phone to replace my Nexus-S 4G I am bored with, and has major radio/network issues.
Very soon two Super phones are about to be released, the iPhone5, and Nexus-Prime. I know most here hate the iPhone, but if the i5 comes out with a 4" or larger screen, thinner with better battery life, and the option to have Widgets on the home screen, i will be very tempted to pick one up. And then there is the phone from the 22nd century the Nexus-Prime, supposedly the most feature packed and newest next gen hardware ever seen on a smartphone.
I know you can always play the waiting game, and just wait forever for the next best thing, and then never have anything at all. But both the iPhone5 and Nexus-Prime are due out in October or so. Or will the U.S. Galaxy S2 easily be on par and close to these other two new devices ?
Bottom line question, why get the Galaxy S2 now over the iPhone5 or Nexus-Prime later ?

For me, I can't wait. I need a phone now. I guess it depends on your situation really... if you can wait until it releases (October?) then it seems like a no brainer to wait until then. But, I think I'll pretty happy with the S2 as long as IC Sand gets on the S2 sooner or later through official or non-official channels.

Well if you think like that, would you get iphone 5 when it comes out because there will be a even more super phone, maybe galaxy s3, coming out in a few more months?

Wait for the Nexus

I think the principle of a winning formula is having the tools/equipment that suits you best. That might actually not be the same as having the tool/equipment that is seen as the best by some group of people (e.g. Android powerusers)
Get the phone that suits you best instead of worrying about having "the best" phone by the standard of a group of reviewers.

If you have a decent android phone today, then wait for release of Nexus Prime before making the decision.

If there's a confirmed release date (which I'm not sure about) and it's less than a month, then I see no reason. A couple of months.... really depends on how bad the current phone is. If there's nothing wrong with it, sure I would be content to wait until the far superior phone comes along. I'm certainly not advocating waiting 6 months or longer...

I think the best choice is to get the galaxy S2 and wait a few months until custom ROMs for the nexus prime be available. Also if you wait you probably get a discount for you new phone.

Guys, look and the new SGS...

Here @ Engadget
So many choice phrases to say right now.
****ing mind boggling.
As a Vibrant owner (since I haven't sold mine yet) I'm kind of pissed at this. It's like they're throwing salt in the wound. Samsung throws 2.2 on that phone before the one that's currently out, gives it a FFC which it was supposed to have from the get go (the hole for it is even there on the motherboard), and makes it HSPA+ capable? Will somebody please tell them that nobody's ever going to support them again since their apparent solution to the no update problem is to sell you a slightly updated version of the exact same phone instead of bringing the existing one with the same basic hardware up to the now out of date OS that it should have had 6 months ago.
in this case.. the Nexus S must of been the sequel to the Vibrant 4G *cough* Android 2.3 *cough*
Vibrant (2.1) -> Vibrant 4G (2.2) -> Nexus S (2.3 - forever)
Calm down folks. There's no release date and it likely won't be until at least next month. The i9000 will be almost a one year old phone by then, and the Vibrant was released last August, which makes it a 6 month old phone.
I'm not going to fault T-Mobile for releasing a better phone 6 months later; that's become a long time in terms of hardware development. I've resigned myself to a new phone every 6 months for as long as I feel compelled to have the "latest, greatest" device.
The picture looks like the same form factor as the current Vibrant; so if all the rest of the stuff is the same, that tells us that our NS, or even our Vibrants, are still pretty much top of the line devices.
Since this looks to be the same build as the current Vibrant, I wonder if it will have the same creaks and groans.
Since they've changed the radio chip (to support 21Mbs) I also wonder if it will still have the AT&T 1900Mhz 3G band support like the current Vibrant.

I agree, the Vibrant being replaced in less than 6 months with a better version once most people have already signed 2 year contracts is a tough pill to swallow for Vibrant owners.
It'd be like if Samsung came out with a "Nexus S Plus" in a couple of months that was more future proofed with HSPA+, SD card slot, HDMI output, etc... Nexus S owners would be pretty pissed and wouldn't want to be told to "calm down" either

i dont wanna be a douche-er here, but, why isnt this in the vibrant forum?
Samsung shouldn't be allowed to get away with this ****. It's disgusting how they release new phones before updating previous versions.

Galaxy S2 will be revealed in February: Engadget http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/12/samsung-mobile-boss-confirms-galaxy-s-successor-galaxy-tab-road/
Considering these phones will likely get enough developer support to see ports of any and all new iterations of Android released from Google (which usually end up being better and more feature-rich than stock anyway); considering you can replace Touchwiz (quite easily even without rooting); considering bloatware doesn't *really* do any harm; and considering Google only releases two major updates a year to the current Nexus phone, it makes me reconsider my position and the worth of the Nexus line.
Everyone will have different preferences, of course, but a lot of me wishes Google would directly challenge Apple with a "Google Experience" phone that isn't meant only to appease developers. In other words, a phone that does compete hardware wise, that does have a more uniformed OS experience that would cater to average-users, while retaining the customizable options and variety that sets the Android experience apart from iOS. That wouldn't sound bad at all.
Perhaps I just got the wrong phone, or perhaps I'm finding out Android isn't for me. Unfortunately, i don't agree with Apple's "the average user is an idiot" philosophy either. For what it's worth, I'm just thinking out loud.

The Vibrant's official release date was supposed to be July 21, 2010, but looks like it came out a week early though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S#In_the_United_States
Let's see, August, Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan...that's 6 months right there, and by the time this new Vibrant Plus comes out (next month, maybe later) it will be 7-8 months or more. There's no announced release date yet that I've seen.
Also, I know we're talking about the T-Mo Vibrant, but it's only a slight variant of the original i9000. I have owned both, and even disassembled both. They both use the same display, touchscreen, same cpu, same gpu, same just about everything internally except the radio and the capacitive buttons. You can even put the i9000 FFC into a Vibrant by just removing some paint, and I've place the Vibrant's speaker assembly into an i9000.
My point was that the basic technology of the ENTIRE Galaxy S line of phones is almost a year old now. The i9000 was demo'd in April 2010, and available for purchase in June 2010. In the phone world, 9-12 months is a very long time...they need to provide something new and exciting to sell more phones, and a 21Mbs radio probably fits that bill.

But that's the reality of COMPETITION. Samsung Mobile exists to sell phones. They have to constantly come up with something that will tempt new buyers. Welcome to world of technology, and economics 101...there will always, make that ALWAYS be a better gadget out in just a few months.
Apple's in a class by itself...not that it's better than the others, but they have a very loyal and large audience that will only buy iPhones. They can get away with a longer product cycle because of that. I'm not sure how long that will last, though.
And if you hadn't noticed, there are probably a whole lot of angry iPhone 4 users who signed a 2-year contract for an AT&T iPhone 4 last July that are now pissing and moaning that it's not fair that they can get an iPhone 4 on Verizon now. That's just the way it is with cell deals and subsidies...if you don't like it, don't buy a phone under contract. I've paid cash and non-subsidized every phone I've bought in the last 18 months, including my iPhone 4.
Hey guys come on it's a "customer favourite"
If you hate Samsung for making the Vibrant Plus in the first place, you're REALLY going to hate them after reading this: http://androidspin.com/2011/01/12/b...samsung-is-holding-the-android-world-hostage/
Allegedly they have Froyo ready to go for the Vibrant, but won't let T-Mo push it OTA for fear of hurting sales of the Vibrant Plus.
Why didn't the nexus s have the hspa+ and I feel like everyone that got the vibrant just got screwed.

Yeah I agree. It reminds me of when the Nexus One came out and set a standard for smartphones and looked really classy which caused alot of people to become loyal followers.
I wonder how long Apples loyalty will last if they don't set a new standard like they did with the iPhone 4 and you have a bunch of crazy Android phones (Atrix, Bionic, Optimus, etc) breathing down their neck?

[q] to keep or not to keep infuse?

Please excuse my girlie-ness
Ok here is my dilemma. I just got this phone not realizing the galaxy s2 would be coming out soon. Wasn't thinking...silly me.
Now i have until september 14 to exchange it with best buy if the s2 happens to come out in time and the buy back with best buy.
My problem is that I have no idea if the ATT version of the s2 is even going to be worth it. I hear the battery isn't going to be as large and that they're changing some things.
Should I return this infuse completely and just go buy the euro version from ebay? Should I wait even longer for this s2 Plus I've heard of here and there? (does that actually exist?)
Should I just say eff it and wait another 6 months for my next discounted upgrade and go with whatever is newest then before my 300$ buyback expires?
I want the super crazy fast dual core and the gig of ram....and the overall awesomeness of what I've heard with the s2

Well the window of release per documents on the web is between now and october 2nd.
I have had the chance to play with one....it is awesome...and no, they did not change much.
Is it worth using the buyback.. i dont think so...there are better phones that will release in q4
Is it worth returning the infuse...i say yes...as long as you don't mind patin $100-150 more for the SGS2 when it does finally release.
I have had sources tell me this weekend...next weekend.. and Oct 2nd ..the roadmap says q3 so it honestly could be anytime in September

If the Infuse isn't enough for you, trade it back in. I was in the same boat, but I've noticed nothing where the infuse isn't fast enough for me.
The Galaxy S3 is coming out next year anyway, or another 'super phone'. You might as well wait until ICS drops if you are that worried about future-proofing your phone.
I thought about the same thing...return my Infuse for the SGS2 or hang onto it. I decided to hang onto mine because the 4.5" screen has won me over. The power is perfectly sufficient for me and the style and shape are just right. I also am blown away by the extraordinary sound quality of my Infuse. It's at least on par with my Cowon D2 and iPod Nano 3G, both of which use a Wolfson audio chip.
There's so much to like about the Infuse that I just don't care about the SGS2 enough to give it up. My Infuse is satisfying me perfectly as it is...well...with the expectation of the coming Gingerbread update that I hope will fix some serious issues.
Whether you keep your Infuse or not is really a matter of personal taste. I find my Infuse to be so endearing that I can't part with it.
appreciate your answers! Thank you.
I guess I just don't want to go and switch it for the s2 (if it comes out in time for my swap thing to still be good) and then be stuck with it and not like it as much.
I do love the screen. for sure. and the battery life is amazing for something with a screen this big....its not too slow thats for sure...but the sound was way way too low for me so i have galaxy tuner and its a little better but i can't find a good set up for the app so that it sounds good and loud at the same time. it gets real tinny sounding.
I also hate that the media hub can't connect with hdmi....has anyone found a work around for that yet? Google and forum search has failed me so far.
Also my camera seems to be kinda grainy and the videos i upload to my youtube channel are always off synced with sound.

Is it now the good timing to buy Samsung Galaxy Nexus ???

Hi all, previously I was decided to buy Samsung Galaxy Nexus
but due to some stupid reason (too expensive) by my parents which don't let me buy Samsung Galaxy Nexus
which need me get good result in order in order to buy new phone (any price that I want)
if now then the price is totally can't even get Samsung Galaxy S II
so, back to the question which is same as title
and since gonna got MWC event after 2days, and sure got new phone announce
and also for the upcoming Samsung own event on 15th March, which maybe announce Samsung Galaxy S III
at the end, is it worth to wait those phone that announce either in MWC / Samsung Galaxy S III (act it as got this phone)
but if wait also need wait to release, then those Samsung, HTC, LG, and other officially bring in to my country, which not the unit from other country which called as original set
so, let's say if I successfully convince my parents to let me buy Samsung Galaxy Nexus now because I eyeing since last year December
and when gonna buy, know the price and say too expensive, ask me to wait it to drop, lol even now Samsung Galaxy S II at my country also more expensive that the budget they set for me (although is using my own money to buy, but is my parents controlling my price)
if you are facing this situation, you choose to get the Samsung Galaxy Nexus now or wait those phone announce in MWC / Samsung own event which will at least wait few month to reach your country ???
*please vote then leave comment and tell me your reason
Thanks
I would wait to see what is at the MWC. Even if the phones aren't available in your country for a while you don't know if it's worth the wait until you see the phones.
normally will available in my country if those phone really is gsm model
i just ordered the white version of galaxy nexus. I did not wait for MWC 2012 as I think by the time I wait for new device release, there is another one coming up. So then should i wait for that upcoming device again?
also do you want the OS to update faster? Or you are willing to wait for manufacturer to comply their UI with the new OS?
IMO, i would say just go for the phone that you think it fits you mostly. I dont think Quad core CPU will do much much much more significant thing more than dual core CPU. I would focus more on the internal RAM because this is the part which handling the memory location storing the execution of tasks you requested the phone to do.
Just think of you got a quad core 3.2 Ghz CPU and only got 1 GB of RAM for your desktop.....How many programs you can execute and no need to wait.
this is just my opinion.

for OS update faster, no idea since normally using custom ROM

if care more really no need buy already

Try LG nexus 4. It is cheap compare to Galaxy Nexus with lots of hardware improvements..
I think Samsung Galaxy S3 is a awesome mobile phone. It's a costly mobile phone but big screen, nice camera, updated android operating system.
Actually galaxy nexus is good one coz there are more advantages if itz rooted(like flashing custom roms)
In my view Samsung is waste because almost all phones looks alike and user interface is also almost same. Prices may vary but features and interface is same. But nexus his its unique value though

S3 now or waiting for S4?

I am up for a new phone with my provider.
So I am wondering should I get the S3 now or should I wait for the next phone from Samsung.
I read abotu rumors that the S4 might be pulled up to go on sale with the iPhone 5.
Though based on track recrod I doubt to see a S3 successor prior to July 2013 (if not later).
Currently I have a Samsung Infuse (AT&T) and I am quite happy with it.
What are your thoughts?
the chance of samsung releasing the S4 anytime before june/july of 2013, is about .00000000000000001%. The S3 is by far the best phone on the market right now, and its worth getting. You also have to release that in the phone world, there's always something rumored to be 'better' right around the corner, so you might as well get it now, because otherwise you'll be waiting forever.

P.S.: Just relaized this was the Verizon version... Posted the same in AT&T as this is the right corner for me...
As a computer enthusiast, I'll tell you that you don't wait for tech unless it's maybe 1 month away at most. Get it now, it is mostly overkill for what 95% of people use it for anyways.
WTF? This phone just came out like 2 weeks ago. It will be a year before the SGSIV comes out.
If you're eligible for an upgrade now, and you like the SGSIII, then get it.
If you don't like the SGSIII, get something else. Don't just sit around and wait for a year for the next version of a phone you don't even like.
I'm really curious to hear from where this rumor came from. A dollar on that it starts with, "my friend told me..." or "my dad works at Nintendo and he said....".

GS3 is already one of the (if not THE) top selling smartphone of all time. Samsung would A) lose a lot in their marketing campaign on it along with all the sales that would have still been pulling from it being a new phone and B) piss off EVERY SINGLE PERSON who bought an S3 because now their phone is moot point (which as part A states, is a sh*t ton of people). Why is there even a poll on this? Should I buy an iphone 5 or an iphone 6? Lol.....
I'm also very curious as to where someone would try and post that the S4 is being released soon.......

I would like to know who on earth would say any thing like that.
Get the S3 or wait for the iphone "5" if that is your cup of tea.

He said the next Samsung phone rumored to be the S4. Im guessing he just added the S4 part himself assuming the next top Samsung phone will be that. The phone that Im guessing he heard about that will be released soon is the Note 2. Unless you want a 5.5in screen get the S3.
op, GET THE GS3!!! Its by far the best device that I have owned by leaps and bounds....main reason, it just plain works! Great signal, battery life, gps, speaker, camera, a plethora of ram, beautiful screen, and smooth as a babies arse!!
Wait for the iPhone 5. If it truly is better than the galaxy s3-which I highly doubt-then get it. If not, get the s3.

oh my....... that means you'll have to wait about a year... since it's only been .. what.? a month since it came out?? but of course.. by then... the new GS5 will come out.. then the S6. I say wait for the Note 2. That's realistic because it's likely to come out within couple months. Even though I have a S3, I think I'm gonna give that to my husband and nab the Note2! ^_____^

I would get the note 2 if verizon releases it...
Get the s3 now, best phone on the market
naw man wait for the S5 since you are going to wait for the S4 anyway
srly just get the S3 unless you want to wait another year (assuming there are no delays...) to get a new phone
You're going to be waiting a long time for an S4...
S4 appear take a very long time, how it functions, to be used only after know,I still very confident of Samsung mobile phones.
Eh, the S7 will be out before you know it, so I'd just wait it out.
I would wait to c what apple n Motorola drop in next month or so,then do a trial run with the top phones n c what fits u the best n go with that.

Well becuase he used the word iphone, I would say he should wait for apple as well. Now Motorola to me is trash, because the OTA 100% stock GB to ICS update killed flash player.( And they would not fix it)
I had more issue's with them/my Razr, but any way's. I think he should get a S3 unless he likes apple/want's smaller screen or what ever.

[Q] AT&T Upgrade: Should I wait, or upgrade now?

Hey, guys. I can finally upgrade my phone and can only do so with AT&T. Should I go with one of the phones they currently have out (Galaxy S III, Optimus G, One X+), or should I wait for another one to come out, seeing as it will be with a 2 year contract? (Possibly M7)
I would say that it largely depends on what you have now. If you can't wait any longer, then just go ahead and upgrade. If you are willing to wait, then do some research about phones that are likely to be released soon. The rumor mill can be wildly inaccurate, though, so do try to manage your expectations.
If I were looking to get an S III at the moment, I would probably hold off since Samsung will most likely be releasing the next iteration in a few short months.
S4 and Note 3 should come out this year (few months) so if u can wait than I'd recommend that. However S3 is very capable and good phone, should be enough for next 2 years
The next best thing is always right around the corner...no point in waiting.

That's also good point. Either it's new TV, new car, new printer - in new technology everything changes very fast. You buy laptop for 1000 euros and next month his younger brother lands on a market and Your device is worth about 800 euros.
I myself have one rule - never settle with something what is low class at the time, try to avoid middle class and if resources let me, buy high-end phone - so it will last a little longer.
But for example now I'm using SGS+ which is enough, even if it's growing old
PS sorry for my bad english
