Automatic light adjustment - HTC Sensation

Dear developers,
The automatic light adjustment drives me crazy. It's too bright if it levels completely down...can anybody tell me in which file I can change the value for this problem? I've read that it should be possible in the arrays.xml, which is placed in the framework-res.apk...but it doesn't exist ....I'm using android revolution hd 3.1.0....please help
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA ApP

I've got the same problem! A way to modify the offset would be nice!
Thx
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App

In order to edit the arrays.xml you have to decompile the apk using apk manager.
If you want, upload your framework-res.apk and ill edit it for you

APK Manager 4.8 error on compiling framework-res.apk
Hello and thanks for your quick reply!
Ive downloaded 4.8 and I put the framework-res.apk in "place-apk-here-for-modding" ...
Then I started Script.bat ... "Java was not found, you will not be able to sign apks or use apktool"...
I set the current project (option 22) where i found my framework-res.apk.
Then I wanted to decompile ... option 9 and 10 failed!
Would you please give me a little tutorial on modding my apk?
Its just because I like doing things my self ...
Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Sure!
Download APK Manager 5.0.1 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227179
Place your framework-res.apk in the "place-apk-here-for-modding" folder
Start Script.bat
Choose option 22 and choose your apk file
Choose option 9 and decompile.
Then in the projects folder, go inside your framework-res/res/values/ folder and you will see the arrays.xml
Open in notepad (or any other text editor) and edit it to fulfill your needs.
Then choose option 11 in the script.bat and wait for it to compile.
Then zipalign the apk.
Then you can adb push this apk to your phone and Enjoy
If you get any errors, please copy the log.txt file and paste/upload it here so i can help you out with it

(I also tried to change the lockring but even the examples didn't work ... is that because of the Android Revolution HD 3.1.0?)
THANKS!!!

1st, thanks to "mohit1234" as he pointed out how to do this. I then found a more detailed thread here.
So, I am now running Android Revolution HD 3.1.1 & made the two attached files with modded auto light setting. The changes I made were reducing the 2 lowest brightness levels (so in the dark the screen is dimmer) and made the buttons light up under lesser light conditions.
The files are flashable through CWM (made using UOT Kitchen), one is modded for the auto light only, the other includes the stock percent battery with green overscroll glow.

I agree that the lowest setting is too bright.
I miss the ability on cm7 to manually adjust the settings. Since i'm not rooting until cm7 comes out, I suggest brightness toggle widget. Its what I currently use, it works well.

fixed
Thanks for all your answers!!!
I just found out why apk-manager didn't work ...
On windows xp - right click my computer - properties - advanced - environmental variables (bottom) - in "system variables" (bottom) scroll till you see "Path" - change path to the "bin" folder of your java...
...on my computer it was: ...\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin
Then close apk manager and restart ... worked on my computer.
Display is much dimmer now! THANKS AGAIN

It would be really nice if u guys can make a new thread about it (prob in the dev section) and put up a small tutorial on how to use it for those who are interested like me

The guide made by sloppy in this thread is as detailed as can be. Even though its for the Desire HD, it works for the Sensation as well.

ryanmo5 opened this thread saying it didn't work and it messed up his home screen.
Thank you ryan for trying this out and letting us know.
i tried this and it says no such file or directory on all files. And then it says it cant find .apks for all files to install. Ok i didnt even look at my home screen all my widgets are gone except the clock. When i try to add the htc widgets im left with only 4 widgets.
Also the Install-Enable-SU.bat did not work for me. Was stating batch was inoperable.
Yeah, the UI tweak totally borked my phone. It locks up at the HTC logo. I went back to ion till tomorrow.
WEE!!!
AWESOME. This is fantastic. Thank you for your hard WORK!! much appreciated! Seems to have worked like a charm for me and i can really notice a huge speed boost especially when going back to the home screen.
I have found my HEROOO!
Oh and btw, when you do the part to optmize for Rosie, the folder that contains the apks should be renamed from Rosie to Files. That will make things work. It did for me.
I miss the Rosie UI lock screen though... its gone?
But wow incredibly speedy and even a lot more stable? Thank you sangeet.003 and all the other FANTASTIC developers on this forum who keep me and my G1 busy with fun goodies.
Here is a oddball question, couldn't someone just create a update.zip with all this done? I'm not familiar with signing pkgs and what not. So I'm not 100%.
i'm a mac user.
but i kind of smart when it comes to these things so i got it to work.
but for other mac users do you think you can just up load the files and post the
adb commands.

I think i read somewhere that it wouldn't be possible because of how big the update.zip would be which is why when flashing Hero, you need the ext2 to store the apps_2
the great thing is, if you just keep testing, reading and messing around with running everything from roms, scripts, commands and tweaks, you eventually get things to work and and you find a huge satisfaction and semi-understanding of it all and you find yourself appreciating the developers here for their work.
Wow its four in the morning and i think im on a strong sugar high because i never post.
so changing the folder from rosie to files worked for you

well did a refresh of Hero and applied all the tweaks here (after renaming the folder as well) and all is wel. thanks a ton for this!
I was wondering if you could use app2sd after using this mod, or will this disable apps2sd?
Ok i did it and it works but there is a slight problem the messaging widget dosent show up. its completely gone. i read the batch file and its missing from the batch file. If you could re write it with the htc messaging app included then this app would be perfect. Or does anyone know how i could get the htc messagine widget back by myself

I think if you placed the "Files" folder onto c:/android (or wherever you put adb) and then:
adb push files/htcmsgwidgets.apk /data/app
that *might* work, not sure because I haven't tried it myself.

Updated...Easy Font Installer V1.3 w/ 35 fonts.(Download Now)

I am releasing this batch script with 35 fonts that I have. Font Selector V1.3 is my most recent work now with font preview. I feel this is pretty good now and will focus on a interactive GUI.
I am also working on some projects that will not only help with installing fonts, but with everything you need to do from your computer with your phone.
It has been reported that some do not work and some are duplicates. I should have fixed any that were not working, but have not removed duplicates yet.
Thanks to DexSade for installing all of these on his phone and taking screen shots.
This is for Windows only.
This should run from anywhere as long as you make a PATH to the Android SDK tools folder
Here are directions to do this for Windows
Windows XP / Vista
Right click on the My Computer icon and select the properties tab.
Select the Advanced tab and click the Environment Variables button.
In the new dialog box double-click on Path (located under System Variables) and type in the full path location to the tools directory.
This is simple to use....
1. Download the zipped folder and unzip the contents anywhere you want
2. Connect your phone through usb
3. Double Click on Font Selector
4. When you choose a font a preview box will pop up. To continue close the box
5. Answer Y or N and it will push the fonts and reboot the phone
I have not tried all of them so please let me know if they do not work or are too big.
Please let me know if this is a good idea or not, as I can easily add more.
Change Log:
V1.4--Added Ubuntu Beta and changed parts of the script so it should work with all versions of Windows
V1.3--Changed script to open up font preview before installing. Included checks to ensure that you are installing correct font
V1.2--Added Juice to #36 and fixed font locations(they should all work)
V1.1---Removed font number 10 and replaced with MyriadPro-LightSemiCnIt
Added several other fonts
DOWNLOAD V1.4:Font_Selector V1.4
DOWNLOAD V1.3:Font Selector V1.3
DOWNLOAD V1.2:Font Selector V1.2
Ill give it a shot...
im attempting to give a shot now. when i open the batch file, the first line says adb is not a recognized command. am i missing something? and also, is it possible for you to put screen shots of the fonts up? would be easier than picking them at random to find one.

ooohhhh, ok. OP said it was cool to unzip anywhere otherwise i wouldve done that. thanks.
since it seems youve gotten it to work, any suggestions on a good font to pick?
Very nice and simple batch file!
Easy to add additional fonts. ****ty thing is alot of the .ttf(s) that I like aren't compatible with android for some reason. I push it and I just get a boot loop.
I've got at last count about 1400 fonts so I'll go through them and see if there are any more that are compatible that look nice and send them to you.

Re: Easy Font Installer (Download Now)
There's 2 files that could be copied to system32 folder and you can use and anywhere. that's how mine is setup. I'm not at my computer to see which ones, but if you unzipped to android sdk tools it should work. this is work in progress.
Just placed unzipped folder into tools directory. Very simple set up trying font two at the moment.

you can use a font editor. there are some online ones, but I have not tried them yet. I will look into some later. I just wanted to get this out there so people could help with it as this is pretty simple to use.

If I toss in my own fonts into the setup like you have, will it read and load into the installer automatically? Or is it just this set list of fonts? (Sorry if I missed this answer, trying to skim over what I thought I already read)
If you put the directory of your tools into your PATH on your comp, you can unzip this anywhere and run it. Unless he messes with path in the .bat
any screens shots of the fonts
Re: Easy Font Installer (Download Now)
Right now you would have to change the font names and either add a couple lines of script or deal out the fonts from one with what you have. if you look at the script, you should be able to make your changes

What's the ADB command to capture shots? I'll take shots as I go along.

[Reg Edit] Right click ApkTool

First things first, credit and thanks to Brut.all for his awesome tool.
Now then, i couldn't find anything like this so i've created a very simple little reg edit to enable right click de-compiling on apks and right click builds on folders.
I've been using it for a couple of weeks with no problems and it's great for those quick .9 or xml edits.
DISCLAIMER:
This was made for the Windows XP operating system! .so im not sure if it will work on other Window OS, feel free to try but im not responsible for your computers well being so use at your own risk.
EDIT:After a little research it seems the registry tree is the same for "Vista" and "7" so it should work on them also
To use this you must have apktool working correctly.
Only works if your path variable is set to C:\sdk\tools\
If your Path variable is set differently you have 2 options:
1-let me know where and i'll attatch appropiate reg-edit.
2-Easy option, create a folder on your C:\ named "sdk", inside the sdk folder create another folder named "tools,
now copy the contents from your original tools folder into your newly created tools and add the path in enviromental variables. Simple.
RECOMMENDED:
It is highly recommended to backup your registry prior to installing, just follow the simple instructions included in the download zip.
To install:
Simply extract .reg file from the folder, double click and answer yes. That's it
Now your ready to become a de-compiling/building whirlwind.
Useage
-I simply right click an apk, "empty.apk" for example, choose decompile (you recieve a folder with the apk's name), navigate into the res\drawable* folder and drop in my .9.png's.
-Backout of folder, right click "empty" folder and choose build.
-The built images are in are located in "empty\build\apk\res\drawable*".
-The built apk is located in "empty\dist".
I've included an empty.apk for quick .9.png edits, this saves hunting through endless amounts of images for your newly created .9.
If the tool fails it could be something simple-
Problem: solution:
-Folder already exits -Delete or rename
-.9.png's not properley edited -Fix using draw 9 tool
-Required framework not installed -Open cmd and type "apktool if FILE LOCATION\framework-res.apk"
Remember this is a simple tool, for more advanced useage and logs use apk-manager
Final Note:
If Brut.all has any reason for me to remove this please let me know and it will disappear ASAP.
Thank you.

Modding the sense 3.0 (step by step directions needed)

I love all the beautiful modified skins of Thypancy's intial theme. Is there a post where we could learn to mod these themes. too. I have 4 in mind that I would like to make or have modified, but i would rather learn how to do it myself. Can someone point me in the right direction.
Hi,
I am not a PRO at this... but i would just explain you the procedure:
1) extract/Decompile the .apk file you want to MOD or make changes to. Use m10 editor for this.Select the option "decomplie all"
2) Minimize the m10 editor, and open the folder where you m10 editor is installed. There you would find a folder with the name of the .apk file you just decomplied. Go to folder assests>"base theme name">drawble>shared folder.
3) now select the .png files you want to edit. Install Paint.net, and edit with them, it was easy process for me. Remeber to "flip image vertical" after you are done with editing.
4) now go back to m10 editor, and Save the file.
5) You should have AndroidSDK installed. If not, do it. Then go to the folder where you have installed it. open the "autosign" file. It will open command prompt. There select the option to sign the file manually. Give the path for the file. It will sign it then. Exit from that program.
6) you are done, you can install it now.
Well, this is the basic idea for modding, and it would work if you have a little bit knowledge. I have been taught all this by "laletsehgal21", who has a good thread of his MODS... you can ask him for a detailed help.

cool man.....
Jst one thing attach the base file that one must use to decompile so that he does not have errors while re-compiling
In de-compiled files changes have to b made in three places.
1. Androidmanifest.xml (name of package).
2. Res\values\strings.xml (name of theme).
3. Assets\shared(change this to theme name)
Now compile and then edit

In de-compiled files changes have to b made in three places.
1. Androidmanifest.xml (name of package).
2. Res\values\strings.xml (name of theme).
3. Assets\shared(change this to theme name)
Now compile and then edit

I tried this but instead of pngs, i'm getting dat files in the "\\\drawable\shared" folder? Is anyone else having this problem?

In the m10 editor, on the second tab "m10files", select "decode images". And then start the process.....
I have attached an .apk file. Install it on your sensation, apply the theme to your mobile. Observe the stuff. Then try to decompile the same file, and edit the images to your choice. It will help you to recognize what files you should change to get your desired result.

Thatz a pretty nice one, and i like how u pointed out all the pages with text. thanks again.

Hi,
I am not a PRO at this... but i would just explain you the procedure:
Happy Modding

I have all the pngs replaced and the its back in a apk, but now I don't see a autosign file in the sdk folder. am I looking in the wrong place?
This is the Android-sdk (along with java jdk) that i downloaded. I can't find a autosign file anywhere.
i found the autosign bat fle. but now im getting errors.
question: how/where do i change these?
In de-compiled files changes have to b made in three places.

2. Res\values\strings.xml (name of theme). how/where do u change this?
3. Assets\shared(change this to theme name) h0w/where do u change this?
---
also when I replaced the background image, and he skin png, they resorted back to the original and didn't keep my background image nor skin pmg.
Sorry to hijack, but how would I change the dock/nav bar?

APK-Fire - tool to add language from 1 rom's apk files to an other

Hi,
After flashing a custom rom I noticed that rom didn't have my language, so I wanted to add it to this custom rom.
After a great and long journey and thx to the info found on this forum I managed to add the language I wanted.
During the journey I started to write a small tool to make the whole process a bit less painful. The tool has been growing from as simple batch decomiple - recompile apk tool to 1 that adds the value folders and do the resources.arsc switch thing.
This is my 1ste release and is still a beta version so still has some errors, stuff to be added and bad code. But still I hope some of you can use it.
If you got any questions just post or pm
Greetings
Installing the tool.
Just extract all files to your root folder and run the ignite script as root. That's it.
There is a help option that guide you step by step.
EDIT: Small adjustment in the language lists and added the Custom_language_list option
EDIT: Like I said tool is still in beta stage, it seems that yesterday in my hurry to get it ready I screwed up big time (like command to make a cp without telling where to copy to) anyway already beta version 1.1 is out now
UPDATE: 1ste real release out now.
Killed some more bugs
Updated the help page
Added some layout editing
Added or updated the log handeling

There is a help function in the tool that guide through most of the steps from the moment you got your hands on tha apk files.
So now the question is how to get those apk files.
Well I like to use Android-Kitchen to unpack rom's, and you'll need that tool anyway to add the new apk files to the rom.
1. Decompile the rom containing the language you want. (Can be stock-rom, your original rom, other custom,...)
2. Copy all the apk files from the systeml/app folder to the stock_APK.
3.Copy the framework-res.apk and com.htc.resources.apk from the system/framework folder to flare/framework and the stock_APK folders
The rest of the how you'll find when you start APK-Fire and use option 'h'
Note: Not all of the apk file will decompile without errors, those that give errors (like market, street, superuser,...) you don't realy need to add language so just delete those apk's from the stock_APK and the decompiled_APK folders.

To add portugees you can choose to add all the languages from the South_West_Europe list.
or
you put pt and pt-rPT (each on a diff line) to the Custom_language_list.
then follow the steps you'll find in help option.

There is a windows version called APK Edit
Only prob here is that you have to open the apk that has the wanted language, copy those folders, open the apk from the rom where you want to add the language to and repeat this process for all the apk files 1 by 1.
If you take this road plz let me know how long it took yah

sure you can.
Step trough:
1 Set-up Android-kitchen
2 Decompile your stock rom
3 copy the content of the system/apk folder to the APK-Fire/stock_APK
4 copy the 2 apk files from system/framework to APK-Fire/stock_APK AND APK-Fire/flare/framework
5 Start APK-Fire and install the frameworks (option 1)
6 Decompile the apk files (option 2)
7 Add the language code to the Custom_language_list each language code get's it's own line. (you find this file in the APK-Fire/lighter folder) for portugees you add something like this:
pt
pt-rPT
8 Get the value folders containing the portugees language (option 4)
9 Now you can choose to back up the stock_apk and the decompiled_apk folders (option 6 / 1) or delete the content of those 2 folders.
10 Got back to the kitchen and decompile the Jaggyrom and repeat the steps 2 till 6 as before.
11 Now copy the value folders you took from the stock rom to the jaggyrom (option 5)
12 Recompile the apk files (option 3)
(check log for errors, warnings you could ignore but errors need attention, be aware that non stock apps mostly will give errors but those also don't need additional language)
13 Do the resources.arsc switch thing to fool the signature security (option 6)
(for more info what this is all about read the switch_resources script)
14 Copy your upgraded apk files from the APK-Fire/firebox/translated_APK folder to the Android-kitchen/WORKING_****/system/app (don't forget to copy the 2 framework apk files to the Android-kitchen/WORKING_****/system/framework folder and not the app folder)
15 Cook your rom
16 Flash the rom
17 Hold your fingers crossed while booting
18 Hopely enjoy the costum rom in your desired language.
Hope this helps you.

i dont know how to do it :/
if i give you my backup can you add pt language for the last jaggyrom ?
cumps
really??
I've already robbed the experience from you of wandering through the jungle of this mystic entity called Android by making the wandering seem nothing more then a walk through the park.
And now you tell me you don't want to know this mystic entity?
Nah I don't buy that, you almost got me there.
I'm willing to guide you through every step but I refuse to carry you.
If you'r on IRC or msn or I can meet you there to start your journey.
Btw at the current rate Jaggyjags is spitting out rom's I can't keep up adding stuff for everyone so I go by the rule:
You translate 1 version of a rom for a man and you made him happy till the release of the next version. You teach a man how to translate a rom and you made him happy for many versions

seriously, I know you like your phone and want get the best out of it but your maximum effort is installing .zip roms or .zip updates?
you've got 2 options.
1. Stick with whatever you have right now: your Portuguese backup or any available custom rom.
2. research, research again, try things out and learn. Try to stop asking people to do things for you. It's difficult, I know, specially when you are used to it, but donĀ“t worry, it always is.
Believe me, it is a really nice feeling when you get things done on your own.
good luck

Well.... all right then
I've explained most of how to add language already, k most of it in close relation with the use of APK-Fire. Anyway I'll try to explain the whole process starting from the base rom till the modified one.
Step 1
Check if your (custom) rom really really doesn't have your language. Try also 'morelocal' app. This simple step can save you lot's of time
Step 2
Now that you't sure that the (custom) rom doesn't have your language or you just want to add more languages to the rom you build your self you have to go and look for roms that do have the language(s) your want to add.
Possible finding places:
- different versions of the leaked stock rom
- Others people custom rom's
- Rom's for other devices. ! Won't work for the 2 framework apk files, but has good chances to work with the other apk files !
Step 3
Question now probably is how can I find out what languages a rom contains (specialy those for other devices). Well easy, you just have to dismantle the rom's and to be sure a few apk files.
The easyest way to dismantle a rom is to use Android-Kitchen. This tool doesn't need alot of installing or modification but I do recommend you read the how to etc.
So now you have easy access to all the content files of the rom.
Take a few apk files from the system/app folder and dismantle them with 'Apk Tool' or if you realy want to go hardcore 'aapt'. And check the 'app-name'/res for 'values-*' folders that you need.
Step 4
Now that you've found the folders containing the translation (those values-* folders) you've got to copy them to to 'app-name'/res of the afk file from the rom you want to add language to.
dismantled app from copy value folders dismantled app from
rom with language -----------------> rom without language
Step 5
recompile the dismantled app where you just added the value folders to
Step 6
You thought you where allmost done didn't you??? Now the real fun part just starts.
In order to bypass the security that check for the integity of the apk file we need to cheat abit.
You need the new apk file and the original apk (the one without the language)
*rename the 'app-name'.apk file (from both version) to 'app-name'.zip
*delete the resources.arsc file from the original 'app-name'.apk (now temporaly 'app-name'.zip)
*take that same file from the new apk file and copy it to the original apk
* rename the original back from 'app-name'.zip to 'app-name'.apk
* Copy that apk file back into the rom (Android-Kitchen remember)
Step7
Now you repeat this proces for ALL apk files you find in the rom.
Yup all +100 apk files from 1 rom + the same +100 apk files from the other rom need to get this treatment.
Step 8
Cook rom
So you see 8 simple step is more or less what it takes.
Same tutorial but better here

It doesn't seem to do the last step for me. The one that is supposed to copy the resources.arsc. It just creates another copy of the stock, without the new resources.arsc.
Any idea of what's going on? Would be a flavor to not have to do this manually!
Hmm I fully tested the latest update with the 2 rframework apk files and everything worked fine.
Are you sure that it's just a copy of the stock apk folder?
The switch_resources script does all the final steps. renaming, delete file from stock, copy from new to stock and rename back.
As I still have to add loggin to this part you should see an output on screen showing what the script is/was doing.
While that part is running you should see a folder called 'temp' (inside firebox or 1 of the subfolders of firebox).
Inside the firebox/recompiled_APK you should find a folder for each app containing the resources.arsc file.
And as last check you can compair the size of the 3 diff apk files. (stock, recompiled and translated). If I'm not mistaken the translated is the smallest (how strange it may sound)
Also make sure the tool is in your root folder.
If possible send me the output you get during this fase.

Never tried it on windows with cygwin, I'm running a debian linux, so that could be the thing that's messing it up.
Still good to know that only that part doesn't work on windows, I'll see if I can modify the script.

I asked because I want to remove unsued language from framework-res.apk to make it slimmer
