[Q] Nexus S 2.3.4 radio issues - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having issues with my radio. It allows me to make calls but I'm not able to connect to the data network. I am able to get Wifi.
I have a baseband version I9020XXKD1 with stock Rom which i've been reading has been giving alot of people issues.
I've read where people flash with Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 which fixes the issues but also alot of people have bricked their phone by doing this?
What is the best method of getting this fixed? I'm not sure how this works but can I use the KB3 on my device? Also read that reverting back to 2.3.3 fixes the issues with the radio but not sure if I want to do that either. What ever i end up doing, i just don't want to brick my device and have the radio working as it should.
Any suggestions?

who is your service provider? im using the kd1 radio without any issues whatsoever. that is a tmobile radio btw. you dont want to flash cyanogenmod 7.0.3 anyways, that is an old version. youd want to flash the latest cyanogenmod nightly.

I'm in the Cayman Islands and the provider is LIME. I believe their 3G band frequency is 1900/2100. Does the Nexus S support that or do I have to do something with the radio/modem on my phone to get it working?

tmobile uses 1700mhz. for 1900 you need an att version. i9020t is tmo i9020a is the att version.

there must be something I can do to get it working with that band. Getting another phone is not really an option.

honestly, i dont think you can do anything. go to the main phone settings, wireless and networks, mobile networks.. enable 2g only(edge), check to see if you get any data. you might get edge.

All right I've went through all the posts regarding this and none of the options seem to work. I have terrible 3G/4G signal where I live. How can I set the network!!??!! Tried the apps tried the *#*# stuff (all I get with that is "RAT selection restricted!" WTF is RAT?) I can't even make a phone call or send a simple text with the one bar of 3G/4G I get. I know most are probably against the merger but I will hopefully benefit from it cuz there is a T-Mo tower down the street from me. Anyhow please help. I'm rooted, stock AT&T, 2.2.1

It's only possible with Rogers-based ROMs (e.g. Infused v2.x)
It's not possible with the stock AT&T ROM or any derivatives, and causes all sorts of problems with CM7.
Hopefully AT&T's Gingerbread update will fix this.

Infused v2 is Rogers-based.
Entropy, I was able to force 2G with Infused 1.5.3 when I had it paired with the Rogers modem. I used the star code *#2263# and that allowed me to select a GSM only band.
Also, on current infused.v2 builds, I cannot force 2G as they're not using Rogers modem and I don't feel like flashing another modem and bricking it on these test builds.

[Q] G2X radio broken

I have CM7 installed on my G2X and the radio turns off on its own -- it reports no signal. In order to get the radio working again, the only thing I can do is reboot my phone.
Also, to even get the radio working, I had to install "APNs Backup" from the market.
I am running android 2.3.4 on CM 7.1.0-RC1-G2x
My baseband version is:
M6600A-SCAUNTZ-2.0.9720T 1 [MAR 07 2011 16:00:00] MP:TRULGE_08.09.02R_MDM
Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone confirm whether I have the p990 baseband instead of the p999 baseband by accident? (as reported here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037098)
Lastly, can anyone help me flash the BIN_LGP999AT-01-V21e-310-260-JUL-15-2011+0 baseband from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037120
Specifically, I am not sure which of the two BIN files to flash, and what the correct nvflash command is (which partition does it go to?)... I can't use smartflash or any windows tools...
I have done a lot of searching and I couldn't find anything to help me out, but a few topics that are relevant are here:

What radio are you talking about?
APN is a known issue for CM7 based roms.
The baseband you have right now is a g2x baseband, though, it was the one when it came out with froyo.
Why you have to partition or repair partition on your phone if it has mo issues with partition?
Sent from my Calculator with Android.
CM7 or any 2.3.4/2.3.5 ROM for the G2x is known to have that issue. They are working on it currently. The APN's Backup App works for me tthough.

FatalityBoyZahy -- do you do anything special with it? It allows me to actually get reception (I can't without it) but my radio will still drop and force a restart. Do you have any special settings on it? When the radio drops the tool no longer has the list of APNs and I have to "restore" to get them back.
I was using the experimental (RC1) ROM so I just flashed the 155 nightly. So far a few of my network issues are solved. I'll update if it's completely solved tomorrow.

I could send you a copy of my APN's if you'd like. You'd just need to put them on the SD Card, and restore them through the app. Shoot me a PM.
I have the same issue. My phone randomly looses connection even in good signal areas. Only way to get back on the network is to toggle flight mode or reboot.
This is a known issue on all Android phones that has persisted throughout all Android versions. Google has worked on the problem and it has gotten better, but they haven't been able to exterminate the bug yet. This phenomena occurs when the 3G signal is weak and the phone switches back and forth from 3G and Edge frequently. Eventually the phone just shuts down the radio due to it switching too much. This is the Android OS commanding the radio to shut off. It is not a hardware issue at all. I have had this issue on every Android phone I have owned. Ironically, the only phone I haven't seen the issue with yet is my G2X running stock GB. The best way to alleviate the issue is to install "Network" from the Market and set the phone to 3G only. If your custom rom has a 3G only option just set it there. There is also an app called "3G only" that accomplishes the same thing. Since you are locking in 3G the phone won't switch frequently and the radio will stay on. You can do the same thing by setting it to 2G only, but who would want to do that.
Network: https://market.android.com/details?id=de.mangelow.network&feature=search_result
3G Only: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mobnetic.only3G&feature=search_result
I think my issue is more severe than it is for you guys. Fatality - when my radio goes out, nothing but a reboot turns it back on. Not airplane mode, not toggling data on off, not changing apns. In fact, when the radio turns off any menu pertaining to the radio freezes and asks if I'd like to force quit it.
Also, I doubt that this is the long term Android bug. I've owned probably 10 or 15 android devices and I have seldom had to restart the phone because of this. For my g2x, I have to reboot literally 15 times a day.
I had two more leads I am trying.
One was that I have a 5 year old T-Mobile SIM in my g2x and I read somewhere that an old SIM could be a problem. No such luck, the radio has already turned off with a brand new SIM.
My second lead is my baseband. I have a March 7 baseband, but the two basebands online for g2x are March 17 and a later one. So, perhaps I do have the wrong baseband?
Thanks,
Ben

Oops I forgot to respond about jboxers suggestion to limit to 3g. It didn't work, either.
The network app didn't seem to have a 3g only mode, the 3g only app didn't limit my phone to 3g (it was still 4g) it only turned data on/off and also the radio still turned off, so I tried using the phone's 2g only mode and that immediately killed the radio.

3G and 4G on HSPA are inseperable. '3G only' will give you '4G' also.

As another poster already said on TMO 3G and 4G are the same thing. In fact, TMO doesn't have real 4G. HSDPA+ is fast but it is not true 4G. In some countries it is referred to as 3.5G and here in Thailand they are calling it 3.9G.
The network app does work. You scroll down and selected "WCDMA" only. That is 3G/4G. That will lock the radio into 3G and 4G only. The 3G only app will lock it into 3G and 4G only. There is no way to say 4G only, because it is not real 4G. If TMO had LTE that would be a different story.
Ah, that's good to know that 3g=4g on t-mobile. How come sometimes my phone says 4g and sometimes 3g?
Anyway, I wish that was the issue
Does anyone else have any ideas of what it might be?
What baseband version do you guys have on your G2x? Does anyone else have the same baseband version as I do?

HSDPA=3G, HSDPA+=TMO Pseudo 4G. HSDPA+ is an enchanced version of HSDPA with faster speeds but not true 4G. Most devices display an "H" but TMO had it programmed to "4G" to pretend they offer 4G service. Both are versions of WCDMA, which is what GSM 3G is.
I found this thread that has another kernel that supposedly fixes the APN. I haven't had my kernel drop yet, but it's only been 10 minutes Here's a link to the kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1229932
For install instructions, read the instructions in the linked code.google.com issue tracker:
http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmo...on Model Network Owner Summary Stars Priority
I used:
adb push boot.img /sdcard/ && adb shell dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 && adb reboot
and everything worked fine (don't forget to clear dalvik cache on reboot).
To run the script he linked to, download ScriptManager from the app store.
It fixed my radio! Though it did kill wifi.

LATAM Baseband

I have seen many threads talking about basebands, but I can't find anyone clearly explaining in which country/region a given baseband in supposed to work well, and where it doesn't.
I need a Gingerbread baseband for my Optimus 3D that will fully work in Latin America region, I'm afraid to get in trouble if I flash the european GB baseband I found in this forum, and loose some (or all) frequencies in my country.
Thanks in advance!
Me too. I'm in Canada and when I flashed the euro gb baseband I lost all connectivity.

I know these boards have picked up a bit but it's kind of depressing considering all the action I see when I check up on the Sensation threads for my other phone. You'd think that because this phone is so sweet and comes completely unlocked there would be a lot of development going on.

I have no idea why it's not working. Both AT&T and Bell use the 850 and 1900mhz frequencies for their respective UMTS networks, but up in Canada we can't even get the phone to recognize our network. I'd be happy with 3G speeds for now, but that's not even possible. I wonder if AT&T uses other bands for 3G speeds as well?
My phone is a P920 of European origin and have had to put the 3G baseband of a Thrill. This in Froyo. Also the one I have worked p920h.
Until no one KDZ for America or get a baseband for this continent, you lose the 3g frequencies 850 and 1900.
Keep in mind that the baseband is independent of the rom, which means that after installing the baseband you can put any rom, whether European or American.
The Ginger there so far is European and therefore everything is lost that frequency.
Sorry for my language.
With Google Translator
Good Evening,
I wonder if a baseband from another Gingerbread device could be modified to work with the Optimus 3D. What about one from an Optimus 2X?
Just a thought...I wouldn't know where to begin!
just a quick question, my carrier works under 2100 Mhz I am located in Costa Rica, if I do put the euro version will the network not work....
---------- Post added at 08:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:10 PM ----------
my question is since I do not live in Europe, what exactly euro open means
I'm using euro gb fw, and everything is working fine, although I have an edge icon instead of 3g, think it's cause of the region can't remember if it happened with my old x10.
this can be an issue unless it's showed like that when not having data enabled
edit:
I'm on a 3g network and I have edge enabled :S, we need LAM baseband Q_Q
I happen to be in a 1900 umts AT&T area, but it was too spotty and I went back to Froyo. Though for those of us who have to wait, I have a froyo custom kernel with init.d support below (thrillz) that I've been running on my p925 on the roadrunner rom.

Apparently Rogers is one of the last carriers to get on board with Gingerbread and is holding up LG.

Good Morning,
My device is a Rogers device unlocked and used on the Bell network.
After flashing the V21a Gingerbread KDZ a second time I am having no issues at all!
I wish I could tell you why it worked this time when the original baseband flash method and my first flash of the V21a KDZ both resulted in network issues.
I didn't do anything differently the second time I flashed the KDZ and was immediately registered on the network. I have had no issues since lastnight.
I will let you know if anything changes!

Hi Audi.
Thanks for the info. I guess since you got on the bell network, the rogers network should also work? Maybe not actually because rogers GSM. Is your connection Gsm Too? I am a bit nervous flashing kdz file. Its not standard zip flash through cwm is it?
I also worried about flashing baseband.
Do you know if I have made nandrroid backup of my 2.2 and need to restore, will my backup flash 2.2 baseband back on automatically?
Thanks .
I use the same gsm network as at&t think it's the same as rogers, I randomly get dc from the network but comes back fast.
I think you should be aware that maybe your 3g network won't work using euro open fw
i'm always on edge :S

Good Evening,
The phone is running great. I currently have the Acura ROM installed.
Battery life is an incredible improvement!
The icon I have is "H" (so 3G not HSPA+ yet); and the speeds are as previously mentioned averaging between 2.5 Mbps and 5.5 Mbps depending on the time of day and signal strength.
No random disconnects; voice and data (3G/WIFI) work without issue.
Thanks, Audi.

T-mobile 4g Radio

OKAY so I decided to update this thread:
There are two versions of the One X. One with aws bands and one without. I have a device without AWS (I am about 80 % sure). There are reports of people getting 4g on AWS with the Rogers Version as of now, and more testers need to check it out as it could still be possible on ATT.
This flash here theoretically could enable the One X radio to lach onto AWS (The radios here are for the One S Ville.)
http://ville.giev.de/?page_id=42
I have flashed all three, and although I did not get 4g, I got faster ping and a near immediate connection onto T-mobile. To all the people saying this will "brick" the phone, it does not and you have nothing to worry. But as always make sure to do a backup. The radio hacks for the Skyrocket/Note were also based on flashing the Galaxy S2 radio directly on top. This should work the same.
I'm interested in this as well. What does is involved and the risk? I don't have warranty on my phone, so I'm a little bit leery in being first.

if your rooted ull should be fine just make a back up of ur current set up. this is just a clockwork flash, it may not even flash, but if it does then there's a high chance of 4g.
i've done radio hacks before for the droid 3/skyrocket/note all from a similar concept. ex. flashing the t-mobile galaxy s2 radio on the note, to enable 4g.
if anyone could provide me with a better solution for an unlock i am sure i can get this to work. seems that the htc unlocker server is down right now
it's the same thing as flashing different radios via clockwork posted in the One X android dev forum
I'll give it a try, hopefully it won't mess anything up. So I just flash the radio in recovery. If no good, I just flash the correct radio again?
There is a one click no HTC Dev bootloader unlock in the Dev forum.

good to hear no negative results got my phone unlocked so i will be testing tonight. also do u guys have the newer sims or older ones?
I have an older sim I believe. It is one that came from an activation kit I bought off ebay. I tried the T-Mobile radio and same results, still on Edge, but still could be my location.
What in gods name are you guys doing! ? Are you trying to brick your phones? It's already been confirmed that the hardware on this phone does not support the proper bands for T-Mobile 3g!

It's not just the SOC that determines hardware compatibility. There are various radio amplifiers and filters which are tuned to the specific frequencies that the phone is likely to encounter. If a phone is going to be sold in multiple markets, sometimes the hardware filters are set up for all frequencies and some are disabled via software, but often times this is not the case.
It's not impossible that a radio reflash can make it work, though highly improbable.

Interested in this. There might be better luck flashing the tmo radio since I don't think any European operators use AWS bands, correct me if I'm wrong.
Can anyone explain why flashing this radio from a different device won't brick our phones?

I have a tmobile one s, but i also have the one from att and i am so interested on using this phone over tmobile 4g let me know if i can of help. I am using my micro sim that came with the one s and i am getting edge (asume its the latest from tmobbile 4g mucro sim. I am on 1.85 rooted but i did not unlock. though i am sure we can flash through CWM. any ways i am sure there is a way out to get 3g or 4g on the one x on tmobile did not find the way yet.
flashed both of the t-mobile modems no luck for me either, although my ping is significantly higher and connects to t-mobile a LOT quicker.
does anyone know how to edit the LTE settings. it is odd but for most ATT LTE phones they have the 1700mhz frequency i think it would be a matter of just defaulting that....
the radios also show up in my baseband so i have successful flashes
EDIT: one more thing, before i was not able to use data at all considering i had the newer t-mobile sims but now data works but on edge speed.

it's just a file in your system. it could potentially brick your phone but you can always get into recovery and restore. which is why i stated you should create a back up of your device before trying it out.
however, i was fairly certain it wouldn't do that because the internals of the One S/One X are nearly identical, they both share the same processor and most likely similar (if not same, radios).
either way, the the radios work, getting me higher ping, and working data without having to switch out my sim for an older one, hope there is a way to activate the 1700 band !
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_x_at&t-4614.php
EDIT 2: apparently there are two models of the ATT One X/XL one with the 1700 band and one without
tspx23 said:
flashed both of the t-mobile modems no luck for me either, although my ping is significantly higher and connects to t-mobile a LOT quicker.
does anyone know how to edit the LTE settings. it is odd but for most ATT LTE phones they have the 1700mhz frequency i think it would be a matter of just defaulting that....
the radios also show up in my baseband so i have successful flashes
EDIT: one more thing, before i was not able to use data at all considering i had the newer t-mobile sims but now data works but on edge speed.

Likely the software has been changed to support T-Mobile, but the hardware (filters, amplifiers, etc) are non-existent, so you'll never get actual 1700 MHz AWS support.
Of course, this is just a 50,000 foot view perspective without actually trying it myself.

you might be right about this one but there are certain One X/XL's that do have the 1700 band found out through some searching and trying to figure out the reason behind it.
If that's correct.... the people with the 1700 band would have 4g when they flash this radio! also use *#*#4636#*#* to change network type to lte/gsm
--- for other phones though like the Skyrocket/Note they were directly compatible with T-mobile radios.
Okay, I flashed the Tmo One S radio and did not receive a brick. What I did receive is a not-so-good connection that will switch between HSPA+ and 3G quite often.
I don't have a WIND sim to test with, but I tried running AT commands on my phone and they don't seem to be working. I tried doing a network scan with AT+COPS=? waited forever and had nothing displayed.
Strange...
--edit--
Rebooted and ran the commands again. Still don't see any AWS carriers.

Don't you need a wind sim to connect im pretty sure the Canadian version will work on aws
Confirmed on my end that even with the T-Mobile radio, I'm not getting HSPA+. Even when I drove by the Moscone center where 1900Mhz was refarmed during Apple's WWDC (maybe it was just that day?). I was hoping this would be like the Note and Rocket where I can flash different radios.
Any other new phone capable of this? The S III? If not, I may have to either wait for 1900MHz refarm or switch to Straight Talk.

Picking up an att s3 today to test it out. Most likely there's two versions of one x one with aws and one without. I know mine doesn't though.

I'm not exactly sure of this one.
If someone is willing to let me cut up their WIND sim (or lend me their WIND microsim), I'll re-flash the tmo radio and meet you somewhere to test it (Toronto, please).
~dan
-----edit-----
Just popped in an old WIND sim that I used to test AWS connectivity at first. Saw WIND Away with the standard radio, and after flashing the Tmo radio I see WIND Away and AT&T (AT+COPS=? shows Rogers, ATT, Telus, Bell).
I live by the lake, that would explain why ATT shows up.

[Q] Which Radio for AWS on CM10.1?

Hi
I just bought an unlocked i727 (AT&T Skyrocket). In addition to unlocking it, the previous owner also modded the phone to work on AWS bands (HSDPA 1700/2100). I was all impressed by this feat, but now that I come to XDA, I find all the guy probably really did is flash the radio, which probably both unlocked the phone and enabled AWS (explained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029650). Currently in "About phone", the Build Number is IMM76D.UCLF6 and the Baseband version says unknown.
The phone is running stock Android 4.0.4 (ICS), and I want to put on the latest CM10.1 stable build, but when I go to this page, it says I need a Jelly Bean radio: http://www.teamchopsticks.org/p/cm101-release-notes2.html
So now I'm worried that if I choose the wrong radio, I'll no longer have AWS bands, which I need since those are the only bands my carrier (Mobilicity) uses. Can someone please tell me which of the radios listed on the teamchopsticks blog I should use to keep the AWS bands on CM10? I'm guessing its the T-mobile version (UVMC6)...?
Thanks!
Edit: Alternatively, could I just install CM9 and leave the current radio as is? I don't really care if I have the latest android version, I just want to get rid of the stock AT&T rom and its associated bloatware.

You can't unlock the operator lock with a radio. You need both a specific radio and a specific firmware.
AWS support is not a special feature that can be enabled, afaik it's a standard function of this phone.
The Radios made specifically for this phone (Rogers & AT&T) should have full AWS support, I don't know about the others.
Also the TeamChopsticks site is mighty dated.
You should check out the official threads in General and Development.
Also these links are always good to have:
http://get.cm/?device=skyrocket
http://10.1.cmxlog.com/?device=skyrocket
http://changelog.bbqdroid.org/#/skyrocket/next
Hmmm... well do you know if its true that CM10 requires a "Jelly Bean Radio"?
Or am I better off just loading CM9? That way I shouldn't have to modify the radio, right?
Thanks!

You could try flashing CM9, then it might even say in what radio you have.
Yes, CM10 requires a Jellybean radio.
If you flash the Rogers radio in my signature or the AT&T radio you'll still have AWS and it won't relock your phone.
There's really no reason not to flash a JB radio and CM10.1.. you're not losing out on anything by doing it.

AWS band in HSDPA (or HSPA+) is not enabled in at&t or Roger's radios, since those 2 networks don't use it for HSDPA.. It's used for LTE (700,1700/2100)
AWS 1700/2100 band in HSDPA can be enabled by flashing T-Mobile blaze JB radio...It should work on cm10.1 since it is a JB radio...
So I spent pretty much all of yesterday reading up on the subject. Since we were under a tornado watch all day anyways, I really had nothing else to do!
After a while, I found the "secret codes" (listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492700), and punched in *#1234#. This told me that my radio was "T769-UVLB7", which I believe is the 4th one from the bottom on this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400, ie the Blaze radio. That would make sense because it gels with my Android version (4.0.4). Anyways, googling that radio eventually led me to this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507825 which had a ton of useful information. So thats the radio mystery solved.
From the same info screen, I could see that my ROM was i727-UCLF6, a somewhat outdated stock ICS rom. So now I know what my phone's current status is in case I need to bring it back because my other combinations don't work for some reason.
So I think I've decided to go with the Pacman JB rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2178402) and if it doesn't work with my current radio, I'll first try the updated Blaze radio, UVMB1, listed third in that same list I linked to above. If that doesn't work, I'll try the others in that list until I get a combination that does (probably starting with UCMC1). I'm also considering the Jedi Mind Trick T989 rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818305). I'll post results when I have them!
Thanks for the help everyone!

So what you're saying is: AWS for LTE is enabled in Rogers and AT&T, but, it's disabled for HSPA by default.
I was under the impression that 2100 is used for 3G/HSPA by default eitherway, but you're saying it's not?

Didn't notice any difference after flashing Blaze LB7 radio. Vodafone has 2100 for 3G/HSPA. Already had full signal with RUXUMA7 and it was still full with LB7 and speed was the same (3.7Mbit down/2.6Mbit up)..

AWS (Advanced Wireless Service) protocol uses the 2100 for downlink
and the 1700 for uplink..
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Wireless_Services
The skyrocket has the 2100 in 3G and LTE
but 1700 is not enabled in 3G
Hence the AWS band (UMTS band 4) is not supported in 3G

Thank you for explaining this, I didn't know all the specifics.
You are correct, the Blaze radio disables LTE and enables AWS.
As you can see here 1700 is not in use in Europe. So the Blaze JB radio is of no use to me.
So in the end, the Pacman JB 4.2.2 ROM worked without a hitch. I did not have to flash the radio at all, it is still working as before.
Baseband still shows up as unknown (the nifty secret codes no longer work), and kernel is now 3.0.72 cyanogenmod.
The phone's working greatI love it when a plan comes together!
What speeds do you get currently on speed test app ?
If your goal is a rom with no bloatware you can debloate a stock tw one...Personally I can never live with cm camera...
At the moment, only about 1.5 MBps, but I am not in a good service area. Even so, everything seems to load quickly.
My only complaints so far would be the ROM itself... already crashed a couple of times, and it has a bizarre way of connecting to the computer (no USB storage mode).

So it turns out that it may noit have been the ROM after all, but GO Launcher. Everytime I get a new phone, I get sucked in by GO Launcher's sexy looks, but the result is always the same: lagginess and crashes. After switching to Apex launcher, things seem to have settled down.
In terms of the radio, I did some more traveling around today and I would have to say that reception is not as good as it is on my AWS Nexus S, so I might try some different radios after all. Just want to confirm though that if I use an i727 radio (like UCMC1) instead of a T989 radio (like the Blaze radio), I will no longer have access to AWS. Is that right?
Right now I'm thinking UVMB1 from here might be the first stop: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400
If you ask me , TW stock debloated and tweaked by me is my and always be my rom ...
For the reception, if you have to have the best reception for a network that uses AWS 1700/2100mhz bands for HSDPA/HSPA+ , the skyrocket is not your phone...Or you have to live with issues every now and then...
That's why your nexus s(the T version) has better reception it's a device with native 1700/2100 band support...
Try some other T mobile radios from the blaze,Hercules or galaxy note 1 (remeber you have to use jellybean radios with any jeallybean based rom) and see what gives you best reception, but again don't expect miracles...
Or another note, try a stock jb uvmc6 rom (flash a skyrocket kernel for the roation problem) and uvmc6 radio or another T-Mobile radio as a combo if it is better regarding general network performance...
Edit: answering your question, yes ..skyrocket or Roger's modem will not have 1700/2100 AWS HSPA connectivity...And that "first stop" was my first advice for you...UVMB1 radio...

Hey mahanddeem,
Thanks again for the help. Even after removing Go Launcher, I'm still getting a few random reboots/shutdowns per day - enough to annoy me. I did some searching and found out about the sticky button issue, but I have a feeling thats not my problem. Usually when the phone shuts down on its own, I have to remove the battery before the phone will turn on again. I'm not completely discounting the possibility that I have a sticky button, it just seems odd that the solution involves pulling the battery. That makes it seem more like a software/Rom issue to me, so I'm thinking of going back to a TW-based rom, but I don't want to restore my original stock with all its extra bloat-ware. All that to say that I was hoping you could tell me which de-bloated TW Rom you are using. I've found Embryo, which looks interesting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074328. Is that what you have?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm trying to avoid a full stock ROM, mostly because of the bloatware and branding (I can't stand seeing a corporate logo every time I start my phone!) - this is basically the reason I put a custom ROM on in the first place - plus the extra control of course. If this is the only thing that will stop my phone from randomly rebooting and shutting down though, then I'll have to consider it. Hopefully the stripped down TW version that you recommend will help though.

I take it you don't know how to root a stock Rom and delete the bloatware yourself?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I'm pretty sure I could root it, that much seems within my limited skill set. But first determining HOW to remove the bloatware, and then WHICH things I can safely remove... That I'm not sure of. Besides, if there are already ROM's out there that have done this, why would I duplicate the effort? I'm all in favour of doing things just so I can learn how to do them, but the fact is I have other things I need to do with my time besides fiddling with my phone (family, work, motorbike.... and seemingly endless friggin yardwork!)

It's very simple, there are plenty of ways to remove bloat, plenty of guides to do it, and charts that show what things are and if you should remove them.
Embryo would be a nightmare for you. Read the thread. If you don't have the time to research and learn, you should not be flashing things on your phone.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Do your researches, it's not gonna happen that anyone here would put a long extensive guide for you so you can "take a look" at it during your coffee time...
Everybody here is learning everyday from others' posts, problems and discussions...So either you put some effort into learning or nobody's gonna spoon feed you..
As a clue , look at Mohan deodexed stock UCMC1,flash,root,start freezing apps that you know you'll not use...Then using any root explorer you can permanently uninstall system apps...And by the way you can use a custom boot animation even on stock, search for how to...
