[Q] Broken GPS and wireless hotspot Evo 4g - General Questions and Answers

Hello XDA! I've been having problems with my GPS and wireless hotspot over the past few months and I've decided it's time to try to get them to work right. Any information helping me fix either of these 2 problems would be greatly apperciated!
Phone: HTC EVO 4G
Rom: CM7
Kernal: [email protected]#1
GPS: Okay, so here's what happened to my GPS. When I first rooted my phone and flashed over CM7 my gps started giving me problems. When I would turn the gps on, the icon would show up in the top right hand corner and the map would follow me as I drove around and gave me turn by turn directions, BUT it would always start me off a couple streets away from where I was when I turned it on. It got pretty annoying so I looked up cases by people who shared the same problem. A good majority said it was a bug with CM and that there's an app in the market that will fix the problem. This app is called GPS Status & Toolbox. After reading fourms and comments made on the app itself, I was convinced this app would solve my gps issues. After installing the app I reset my gps status with the app. Now my GPS does NOT show up at all, my map does NOT follow me around when I drive and it does NOT give me turn by turn directions and It CAN'T locate my correct location.
Hotspot: After rooting my phone I came across an app called Barnacle wifi tether. It's a wireless hotspot app. The app broadcasts your 3g/4g signal wirelessly. When I broadcast my 3g signal, I can connect my laptop to it just fine and I have internet. But when I connect to 4g(and yes I have signal) my laptop is connected to it but with no internet access. It's the same way on my mom's computer. The app itself says it broadcasts 4g signal, so I don't understand why there's no internet.
I can connect my laptop to 4g just fine using easytether and it has internet.
Anyway, those are my 2 biggest problems and I don't know where to even begin to fix these. Any help is greatly apperciated!

Can anyone please help >.<

[Q] Try me ;)

I know we're all excited with getting the whole tethering thing to work, and some are happy they can just use it for their lap tops. I want to push this to the limit. Partly because I'm grandfathered into the lifetime plan on Sirius and would like to listen to my Stiletto 2 at work, heh. So, I would like to be the guinea pig of anyone who can connect a device that doesn't need usb support to us the wifi. Obviously won't work using my Stiletto 2.
I own a MyTouch 3G Slide, and can acheive 3 out of 4 bars where I sit at work, which should be enough to send out some internet. I have used Wunderradio to stream my Sirius, but it cuts out frequently and there's "nothing they can do about it."
Are you trying to do wifi tether? Are you rooted?
If so you should check out an app called "wifi tether"

I am not rooted, I cannot figure that out and am afraid of turning my new-ish phone into a paper weight. I did try wifi tether, but if I remember correctly, it prompted me to connect via usb for the wifi to be used. My stiletto 2 has to connect wirelessly to a wifi source for it to pick up signal, or be in clear view of the sky. Sadly, I do not sit near windows at work.
WiFi Tether uses your data plan for the internet connection, then you connect your computer to your phone through wifi. No USB involved.
I'm sorry, the one I tried was called "easy tether." Where can I find "wifi tether"? I couldn't find that program in the android market place.
I know AT&T censors the market, removing all tether apps they can find (since they charge $20 extra per month for it). Others may do the same.
I get around it by turning on Airplane Mode (which temporarily disables the SIM card), then turning WiFi back on and entering the market. Turning Airplane Mode off restores it to normal.

[Q] Wireless distance issues with Sharp IS03

I originally posted this in the IS03 sub-thread but received no replies.
Not root-related but since a little under a week ago, my IS03 has been having a real hard trouble with wifi when at home. If I move more than 4 meters or so away form the router, I cannot access anything.
When this happens, I'll disable/renable wifi (from 4-5 meters away or further) and one of two things will happen: 1. My network will not even show up or 2. My network will show up (with a 'good' or 'fair' wifi status) but when I try to connect, it will disconnect immediately.
What I noticed through the Wifi Analyzer app was that even when the Android wouldn't show my network on the network list, wifi analyzer still registered it about -70dbm.
I originally thought the router is to blame but both my wife's AU HTC Evo and my Amazon Kindle have no problems using wifi from the same distance.
I also thought that perhaps the cover I have for the phone may be collecting dust so I removed it to no avail.
Any ideas why the wifi in my phone is acting up?
Thanks.
UPDATE since original post: I moved my router (Linksys WRT160N V3) to a more central location and installed DD-WRT (TX Power power set to default 71) and the problem went away for about a week but now it has returned. Both my Kindle and my wife's Evo have no issues with accessing the internet through wifi from the other side of the apartment but the IS03 cannot.
If I try to connect to wifi and I am right next to the router, one of three things will happen: 1. It WILL connect but I cannot access the net. 2. The network will show up on the available network list but it won't automatically connect (will say the network is disabled. If I try to manually connect, it will immediately disconnect. 3. Network won't even show up.

[Q] Wi-Fi not working. Am I the only one?

Okay, a little about my setup. I have tested on Slim ICS 2.7, 2.9; Codename Android 1.4, 1.5.5; as well as AOKP (I dont know exact builds, but am on the latest now - build 28). I have a Cradlepoint MBR 1000 which is a b/g/n 4g router (though I only have cable hooked up - was bought originally to allow me to broadcast my Clear 4g service, but Clear doesnt work where I live now).
EVO 3D, iPhone 4s, All my laptops, HeroC, Kyocera Echo, Roku...I mean everything connects to my Wi-Fi EXCEPT my NS4G...WTH?
Does anyone else have this issue?...could it be some settings with the N router?...I cant believe everything but this phone works.
Please help. It is so frustrating to be limited to 3g that works intermittently while I am at home. I have all my apps from the Google Play backed up to my sdcard so I dont have to connect to install them...it is a huge pain. Thanks in advance
Need some more description. What settings do you have on the router, how have you tried to connect, does it connect then drop out, can you see the network at all, etc?
Either your phones wifi hardware is gone or your house.
So here's what you can do to narrow down on the problem.
Tell me if you can connect to any other wifi hotspots outside your house. If it does connect then problem is router if it doesn't than problem is with the phone.
Good luck.

Does it detect any Wi-Fi networks at all?
Does it detect any Wi-Fi networks at all? or just can't make the connection
I have the same problem but only at home .I don't anderstand a lot about this, I change my rom with ice scream sandswich 4.0.4 it was working with 4.0.3. Where is the problem. Thanks for your help.

Not necessarily. Setup of each router can change in numerous ways so as to stop certain devices from working, as can certain phone settings not allow connecting to certain routers. It is not quite so black and white, and we already know the router works.

Sounds like a channel setting problem. Easiest way is to open up your router config and change the channel between 1 and 12 and this shouldn't happen again. Alternatively you could mess around with your build.prop.
Harbb is right, you might want to test several things within your router:
Change channels (use 1, 6 or 11-12)
Set it to only use on b/g connections (don't use n)
Different authentication methods (WPA2 with AES, etc)
And make sure you don't have a limit on your DHCP settings (just to make sure you don't have a ton of devices connected so it's not handing more IPs) or MAC filter.
Okay, sorry for not replying sooner. I posted this, then went to bed.
@Harbb:
It does see the network, lets me connect, put in the password, and says it is connected. It always says the connection is poor when I know it should be a good connection. The phone then shows the wifi icon and up and down arrows inside of the icon...I never see a portion of blue. When I try to download from the market, it will act like it is working, then the icon will disappear/reappear numerous times before it tell me there is not a connection.
As for my router setup. I do not know what information will help in this but here is some info: I do not have MAC filtering on, WISH is active (dont use it), WPA2 Only Personal AES (this is what I use), Channel 6 (I have tried channel 11 because I read somewhere the Wii needed 1 or 11 or one of my devices needed it), Transmission rate is Best, Channel is Auto 20/40 MHz, Mixed b/g/n (to utilize N and G, it has to be on this setting, there isn't an option for Mixed n/g), it is set on 192.168.0.x, NetBIOS mode type is Mixed (Broadcast then Point to Point).
@shockem I have not tested it with any other hotspot to see if it is just a problem with that router and this phone. I will try if I can find an open hotspot and let you know.
@Billchen0014 It does detect the network and connects, but drops it constantly...I cant even download a <1MB file from the market.
@Harbb (2) Going by your advice to daviki...it looks like I need to check another router. I go by a Starbucks, so I will try their hotspot...unless it isn't free, then Ill look around.
Thanks everyone who is helping me with this.
@Oogway, I will try G only and see what happens...if I use Mixed it has to be g/b or b/g/n. As for DHCP there is only 2 maybe 3 devices connected and No MAC filtering
Could it be the Wifi country code issue?
Is that something on the phone? Also, I tested different channels (1, 6, 11) as well as b/g and g only. Still no go.

Thanks for the info. Test another hotspot (preferably one with a wpa2 password too if possible) and let us know. I'll reply later with some things to try as I gotta get going.
Okay, I did test one more thing. I sat right next to the router and it had full bars. Stayed full and my speed tests were great. Moved to where I sit on the couch about 30 walking steps away and no connection. I know the signal reaches because it is where I use laptops and other devices. The PS3 and Wii are further away and have no issue. It is not a clear path, but there aren't any doors between the router and the couch.
Just some more info...leading me to believe it is an issue with the phone. I get horrible service with Sprint also, so it may be connected. I don't know.
Any ideas? Is it just because of how far away I am?
Again, thanks everyone for the help. It has been so frustrating ever since I got the phone.

Wifi Analyzer can give you a dB reading on the signal strength if you'd like to try that from a distance too. Wifi at uni likes to show low bars quite often, however alot of the time i have great signal and it shows through wifi analyzer. May not be related since uni is a peap connection, but worth a shot anywho. Might give another hint on whether you should seek out warranty or router settings.

[All] PDA Net won't do downloads, anyone else?

While out and about, I have been bluetooth tethering using the Foxfi/PDA Net combo to stay connected while in 'pay for Wi-Fi' areas and as a passenger on trips. The one downside I can see is it says "No Internet Connection" and anything connected to the downloader program (browser downloads and store) will hold until I have Wi-Fi.
Anyone else try this? Anyone know if there is a fix, or if this is just how it is?
My details: Phone is Galaxy S II rooted with ICS, Tab was stock, now rooted with CWM.

I've been using bluetooth tethering using same scenario (epic 4G though), and when connectivity breaks, I have to check PDA Net and reconnect at times.
Sometimes data will hang and disconnecting and reconnecting will cause data to flow again. Other times my phone has issues and I have to restart FoxFI/bluetooth on it.
I always thought it was my phone though.. phone does reboot at times too. Using wifi instead of bluetooth is more problematic - epic runs only wimax or wifi but not both, so tends to have issues there as a 1st gen phone.

As far as my connection between the tab and phone, it has been solid. I guess that could implicate the phone. I have found that the systems tie themselves together much better if you let each program turn on the BT for the devices.
I'm disappointed that I can't download files from the browser or update programs on the fly.
w/ bluetooth, it is using a proxy service, so only browsers can communicate. app store updates or other app communications won't work in BT mode.
wifi tethering is the non-proxy way to address that..

[Q] Auto Tether with NFC

So here's the deal. I have a rooted GS3 running stock rom, with Wifi Tether- TrevE Mod. I am using it to tether to my Nexus 7 installed as a head unit in my car. I want to use tasker to start the wifi tether automatically. I followed the instructions here (http://tasker.wikidot.com/wifi-tether) using the directions on the second half of the page. I confirmed the files are located where they are supposed to be, but it never starts the hotspot. I have checked to make sure the hotspot isn't on with no notification, my computer and tablet both fail to find the hotspot, so it is truly never starting,
I also know tasker has a "wifi tether on" setting that will enable the default tether program. I'd be perfectly willing to use that, but so far I've been unable to find the "entitlement_check" location using sqlite. I know there was a framework hack for ICS, will that still work on Jellybean?
Any advice people?
Edit:
For further information I decided to test the Wifi tether setting in Tasker just to see if I could use it, and it turned on the verizon hotspot successfully, but i started losing my data connection on the phone almost immediately. It let me go to one website, then the 4g disappeared, and would blink on and off again about once every 30 seconds. Not sure what that means.
Any update on this, trying to do the same thing and cant seem to figure it out

I had the same results as the OP with everything he listed.
Also I'm using my Verizon GS3 tethering to a Nexus 7 head unit. I settled on Bluetooth tethering using Tasker on my phone to enable BT tethering when it connects to the Nexus 7. Then on the Nexus 7 I have the Bluetooth Auto Tether app or whatever it's called to allow the internet connection to be shared with it.
For a long time my biggest struggle with BT tethering was that Pandora won't work with it. I even contacted Pandora support regarding this issue. Then a Google search revealed that you can use Pandora V1.3 with BT tethering! So for the last month or so I haven't really used Wifi tether, and there's enough bandwidth to even play Netflix in HD on the N7.
