[Q] Use volume buttons as page up/down in Android - General Questions and Answers

Is it possible to develop an app that will let us use the volume buttons as page up/down in Android? If you're interested in this feature, please post and maybe someone will work on this if we have enough demand.

Something like this....?

If you're just looking to do so in the browser, Dolphin HD has the option. I know certain ereaders do as well.

ButtonRemapper is close to what I'm looking for but it doesn't work for me. I tried it on both the X and Bionic.
I know certain browsers do have this feature but I don't want to be limited to certain apps.

[APP] zMooth gesture app to replace keys

zMooth works on rooted Droid's with rooted android 2.2+.
zMooth lets you use gestures to mimic your device's hardware keys (back, home, menu and power(in Pro)), you will be able to use very intuitive gestures to navigate your device.
zMooth is unobtrusive and uses minimum amount of screen space but very easy and intuitive to use. If you use for couple of days you won't even think about using the buttons.
After you install the app you will see a blue area at the bottom of the screen, swipe left on this area to go back, swipe right for menu, gesture a up-arrow(^) for home and gesture a lightning strike/thunderbolt to power off. Please check the screen shots and video for more info.

Support is built-in to the app, "Preferences->Help" will resolve most issues. If not resolved just contact me through "Preferences->Help->Contact Support" and I will be happy to resolve any issues.
Thanks.

Would appreciate any feedback from DroidX users.
Thanks.

This is a great app! Sometimes it has trouble picking up back and search, but that's only because it will only pick up gestures to a certain degree of crapyness.

Thanks for feedback, updated OP with info.
Still using this and just bought the pro version so I.could.customize more. Now to get my button lights to stay off.
EDIT: Really like the turn screen off with the paid version. Don't have to use any of the hard buttons anymore, I don't use the search except when in stock recovery.

I'm using this app since the first versions and now I can't live without it!
I have just installed in my galaxy tab and it runs like a charm!
Five stars in the market!
Thanks!
For me, a perfect solution (after trying Button Savior and Softkeys). I came from the Incredible, and quickly learned to dislike the hardware buttons of the DroidX.
Zmooth solves the problem and really speeds up operations. Stable and configurable, too.

[Q] Changing the search button behavior

Does anyone know of a way to change the physical search button behavior on the SGS4G? I don't use it and would really like for it to open my dialer or something instead.
that would be awesome if that was possible
u need to be rooted.
then use buttonremapper on the market or launchkey
QuickDesk can be set to launch on a press-and-hold (in any context). Not exactly what you might be looking for, but I find it pretty slick.

Camera button

Are there any apps where I can use one of the volume buttons to act as a camera button and take the picture?

I wish we had a way to route the volume button to take pictures.
I don't think there is any app to do this.

CM7 usually opens up that functionality. Hopefully that comes soon.

Certain roms I believe have this feature. Look in settings then look in system then go to hardware keys and see if your rom has the ability to create a short cut to the camera through custom actions. Or see if you can assign short cuts through settings. Certain roms will allow this. Also , you can look in the play store and see if certain camera applications have the ability to assign short cuts. This is possible. You will have to do some searching but I believe certain play store camera applications will allow this. Also you can try the application "quicker" it allows camera and video short cuts.although I'm not sure which keys. Just take a look. I'm sure there are other apps like quicker available too. It will just take some searching. I Hope this helps you out. Best wishes.

You guys do realize that this thread is over a year old? I think it wouldn't be too hard to modify the camera.apk to take pictures with the volume key. Someone did something similair for the Xperia Play, with the shoulder button instead of the volume button.

[Q] Long press on volume keys to change music track?

As the title suggests, is there a means to assign the volume up/down keys on the transformer to changing music tracks when they are long pressed?
As far as I am aware, none of the current ROM's provide this feature using the stock music app; would it be easy to implement such a modification or is there an app to enable it?
Good question
I also would like to know it. I'm missing it, since I use it on my htc Desire.

You could probably recommission tasker for that problem

Multitasking bar for cm9

Does anyone know if u are able to reprogram the search button as multitasking? If not is anyone here capable and willing to reprogram it for some of us who I'll use it because I rarely touch the search button. Anyone else would like this except for me? Btw I'm running eagesblood, Thanks in advance
I second that request. That'd be way more useful than the search button
Do you mean the recently used/running task list? That's accessed by pressing home one the first home screen.

I would love this. Seem to remember CM7 having custom application launching for touch and hold search button so it might be a feature that just hasn't been implemented yet.
I have seen customizable keyboard modifications for devices with physical keyboards in order to remap some of the less useful keys to something worth while. When I have more time I may try to dig it up and see how complicated it is. Anyone care to tackle this? I probably don't have the knowledge to complete.

I know u can long press home but that is time consuming sort of in a way and I get annoyed by doing it.

You can customize the home key in cm9 like you can customize the search key in cm7. You need to install Apex launcher. It have a lot of features you would like. This launcher do everything like cm7. Try it out.

Can you just remap it with Button remapper or Tasker?

Button remapper won't work because it doesn't remap the long press stuff like multitasking.
