Total Noob Question.. - Samsung Mesmerize

I'm a long time user of HTC phones but recently switched carriers (today) to Ntelos. They are a local job here in Central VA but have a decent network.
I picked up the Galaxy Showcase which seems to be the same as the mesmerize as far as forums would show.
My questions are these:
Are there really no differences from the US Cellular sch-i500 and another i500. My phone is not branded in any way.
Being that I used to use unrEVOked to root what is the best method to root this puppy. I really am missing some MIUI on my phone.

SuperOneClick for root... your phone doesn't have much development though.

Yes there are differences. Don't flash anything not built for your phone unless you know how to fix it if it breaks.

Yeah I have noticed...I'm not too worried about the custom roms as I had miui before I switched to this phone and the two are similar enough. Really I'm just trying to delete some crap I don't want and tether.
Also I haven't figured out how to fix the dang gps lock problem and I thought root might give me more options

Should I?

I am looking for a good android phone on at&t. It seems that the captivate is the only really good choice. is it worth it? also, how easy is it to root? I understand that recent app for rooting does not work on the captivate.
If you can get something else on another carrier, do it. If you can wait for something else. Do it.
If you HAVE to get an Android Phone, RIGHT NOW, on THIS NETWORK, then yes Captivate.
But otherwise, NO ****ING WAY BOOOOO CAPTIVATE.

my parents say it has to be on at&t, I do not have a cellphone at the moment, so I would say yes to the RIGHT NOW and ON THIS NETWORK. is rooting a real pain in the ass with the captivate?
There are one click root programs and one click roms.

No, rooting has been made simple. Do yourself a favor and read, read and read some more before you try anything. It's best to know you can recover when you make an oopsie, we've all made at least one.
added: and welcome to the forums!
I'd say get the HTC Aria - it is on par performance wise with today's phones. It works. It can be rooted and overclocked. You can run Cyanogen Mod on it out of the box.
But... it is not the fastest phone that AT&T has today.
I love my Captivate... when it works.
But with non-working GPS (and flaky when after much tweaking I do get it up and running.)
And now the phone is suffering from shutdowns after I charge the phone all the way up. Will need to warranty it to hopefully get a build # that will "work".
..... Good thing is that XDA has a rocking' community for this phone - and for those it works for - it is a great phone.
So - its ultimately up to you. Good Luck

If you are going for speed then you need either the Cappy or the x10, nothing else AT&T has comes close.
Personally between the 1GHZ, 16gb of storage and the beautiful screen, I wouldn't trade my Cappy for any other phone on the market, even though the GPS is crap.
No issues w/ my Cappy... GPS works accurately everytime (shhh!) there's just minor lag when I reboot the phone until the media stops scanning. one-click root will take you longer to download the app to your PC than it will to root it.

[Q] Bricked?

My wife works for US Cellular and is having a complete fit about me updating my phone and rooting it !!!! She is afraid of it being bricked or having some issue with it down the road that i would have to send it out and it having to be worked on and DATA TECH seeing that it has done.. has there been any issues with the froyo update bricking phones i've looked and looked and not seen that it has.. also rolling it back to stock hasnt had and issues either has it ...
None that I know about. Besides you can always do an odin restore to 2.1 and it will be like it just came out of the box.

I work for US Cellular. This phone is my work phone, and I develop on it. I'm 99.9% positive that you cannot brick these phones by rooting and updating them, or flashing anything to them for that matter. As long as you follow directions you should be fine. When using Odin, don't flash anything to the Phone portion. Only flash to the Pit and PDA portions. Also, never flash anything that isn't for the Mesmerize. I don't care that other people have not had problems with it, It's not worth the risk to the average person. Also, read everything that you can and ask questions.
Come hang out in the irc room with us if you need anything.
Thank you...so far froyo is working well haven't rooted yet.. What are the benifits to rooting?

Rooting allows you the ability to get to the root directory, run apps that you couldn't run before, and other features that you normally would have. It's a hand thing to do.
Rooting shouldn't brick your phone.

Yes after rooting you can download from the market adfree that will remove most ads. The what I like to use is titanium backup to remove or freeze the bloatware. By freezing it is removes it from the app drawer. But is still on the phone encase you need it later say for warrenty. But now with the Odin files for our phones you can delete the bloat and do a resort in you must warrenty it.

I work for US Cellular and I use my work phone for rooting, development, and h4xing. I once messed up a flash when it first came out(no odin yet) and sent it into samsung directly and they reflashed it for me.

So I assumed you were typing it different every time. Then I realized you were probably using the xda app since it said "Sent from my .. ..." haha
I started adding the - so people would know it was my sig. Now the new version of it.

Like the sig. I'm gonna do that with mine.
Adfree is awesome,
And another really good way to get rid of bloat is to use the pick'n'pack roms. All the instructions are on the post in the android dev section.
And rooting/ flashing shouldn't be frowned upon by a lot of people at us cell / samsung- a lot of those are people that have a passion for phones and do the same thing

[Q] How to unroot (specifically mt4gs)? Does rooting cause GPS issues (or any at all)

I still want to be able to unroot and receive updates if I wanted to. Plus, I was reading about some users having difficulty with GPS lock.
I am a noob. First android phone.
Sense your are rooted you need to try my GPS and Data fix in the dev section. Should clear up your GPS issue. what country do you live in? I can tailor one for each country.

I am not rooted yet because I want to makes sure there everything will work fine before I root. I also want to be able to unroot though. Is there a how-to (unroot) for the mt4gs?
I am located in Socal, pretty close to Vegas.
Then my GPS fix WILL work for you. The GPS stock on this device is horrible.
Sent from my Undeadk9's Senseless ROM using xda premium
Ok, I had the same question. But it is still unanswered... Can you unroot it? I don't know if I want to keep this phone and I just got it. I may send it back but I wanted to try out the rooted version, or I guess S-off as everyone is calling it, before I return it (if I do..? arg!)
The GPS and the battery life suck on this thing. I had a G1 before this with cyanogen mod and the whole lot but it seems the game has changed a bit since then. Hopefully it can be done!
I know of no way to get s-on once you turn it off. You could still return the phone though no problem. Just flash the stock rom back if you don't like the custom roms and they won't be able to tell anything if you take it back. The two roms that UndeadK9 has done both fix all the problems this phone has stock. It really makes it a much better device. I doubt you will want to return it after you try one of them. I can't speak for the other custom roms because I haven't tried them myself. After you decide to keep the phone go to Amazon and get the Ankler battery and you will have one bad ass mamba jamba. Info on the battery can be found in the accessory section of the forum. Good luck.

Sidekick 4g vs MyTouch 4g Slide(Ordered myTouch)

T mobile is offering me a choice between a Sidekick 4g and a myTouch 4g slide.... I've read the specs and seems the mytouch is higher end but want to know opinions from users who know whats what. like I said I've read the specs already so I am trying to look past the black and white.
_____________
OK now I have the phone on it's way. I know I can't get s-off but would like to know what I can and can't do until that solution has been found. I am also reading up so not looking for the lazy way out.

Pretty sure the Sidekick has reported A LOT of hardware problems.... check there forums here as well, but I do recall it being a high-problem phone.
You can't possibly go wrong with this device.
Developer "Blue61X" has even bought two of these devices because he loves it so much. if that helps

I'm leaning this way.... haven't had much chance to explore this forum yet... Is it possible to get s-off yet?
Yea, it's great. I can't see anything else coming close to it for a while in it's class ( hardware keyboard )
The stock battery is not great - and that's being polite.
You can find links to the battery threads in the contents page of my sticky in dev - basically you have the cheaper Anker or the more expensive Mugen to choose from to replace it with.
If you have/want to spend the money, the Mugen is great - I rock an Anker myself and love it.
Make use of the tv-out through the headphones jack, I play a lot of games output to a tv screen and the device stays alive and active while you are hooked up. I'm sure you can imagine how much more fun racing games and many others will be like this.
You can also find links to the tv threads in the dev reference, which will tell you what cable to get.
I have a Trident case on my primary, and love it. There's a decent thread on cases, but I've been pretty busy around here and haven't had the chance to update it in a while. I'll get back to it sometime.
Once you change a few keymappings, update with my gps fix and start really playing with it you'll love it.
Any specific questions just toss 'em out there - but there is no other device now or that we know of coming that I would trade this for.

Depends. For the new update, which you'll have, you got a chance with the HTC unlock tool - if that works you can do most stuff.
We are actively working on a downgrade to S-OFF option - this led to me getting S-OFF to S -ON for us a couple hours ago and I'll be bringing one of my devices up to the S-ON locked state you'll get it in later tonight.
Then I'll be able to actually try stuff instead of us guessing - all the devs working on the fix were S-OFF already so figuring out how to flip it S-ON was a big step in productivity. Once I update in S -ON, I'm stuck until we figure it out - so don't worry man, right there with ya.
HTC should have the issue resolved and restart the OTA in the not too distant future.

DO NOT SIDEKICK 4G i have that phone and its slow as ****, no roms, very hard to put clockwork mod on it,
the olny good thing about it is the keyboard and i personally prefer the mytouch 4g slides keybaord
@ Blue: looking forward to the success of your work and all that I can learn from you and the other devs. I personally use the Samsung galaxy s 4g and am getting this phone to replace my wife's mt3gs and think I'm going to be jealous from the little bit that I've read.
@wiswis: already placed the order for the mytouch. I posted something similar to this in the sidekick forum and plenty of people have viewed but no post. They made the decision very easy.
Thank you everyone for your input.

Just a little word about the GPS. On the 1.28.531.10 stock ROM, your GPS fix was a huge improvement. However, now that I'm on the 1.55.531.3 stock ROM, the GPS is lightening quick and accurate without any adjustments on my part. HTC must have done some serious tweaking to the GPS code in this ROM.

You know, I wasn't thinking when I wrote that - there was a bunch of GPS stuff that was pushed for the new update, a new SUPL cert and gps.conf file. I meant to take a look at it to see what they did and if it still needed help or not, but haven't had a chance to yet.
Hopefully I'll have the presence of mind to pull them from my other phone now that it's up to date stovk

i think you get the idea by now, but i'll just say, the keyboard is the ONLY POSSIBLE reason you might choose the SK. i've had both, and there is no comparison... MT4GS all the way.
LMFAO! Screw the damn keyboard. I can't wait to dig into this phone and see what it can do. Only downside is my wife said I only get one weekend to set it up before she takes it away. NOW that I have the phone on order and I'll only have the weekend to mess with it any suggestions on what I should start with until s-off is achieved?
Depends what hboot u get. If u get the older one, ur in business. Ez to root and s-off.
Use rubix ics 5.2 with my directions on page 148 of its thread on rootzwiki, if u want stability with everything working and super fast. If she wants ics, tbalden's rom probably. But all the 4.0.X roms are still a work in progress.

having one crappy phone from a manufacturer doesn't really affect the quality of other phones at all. the galaxy s II is one of the best phones of the past year. the galaxy nexus is also by samsung, and is also one of the best phones around at the moment. what you should look at is the phone's category, gsII and gnexus are both high end phones, while the sidekick 4g is an entry-level device.
true. galaxy s2 and galaxy nexus were the best. probably still the best right now. but g2x is a good phone. you will have fun with it. once u get it, if it asks for a ota update, dont do it yet. there are no roms for it as of now.

its the update that LG sends out. when you get the phone, you should check your BaseBand. if its March 2012, then stay on the rom ur on. u can flash other roms, but the calling will be f'ed up
The t-mobiel rom is very stable and very good, there is no need to use modded rom, none of the modes hold a candle to this update because of the firmware, driver and baseband upgrades in this rom. I am sure mods off this stock rom will come out soon and CNG will release their updates in the next couple of months however the stock rom is the best fully functional rom thats out right now only because LG fixed fundamental firmware and driver issues this round.
